Malik al Bahjat, the heir to the throne of Alazar rarely gets any time to just be a young man and not a royal heir so when he escapes his restrictive grandfather for a night at a party in Rome, his instant attraction to a beautiful young American woman named Gracie leads to a passionate encounter between them. But in the light of day, the weight of his duty to his country leads him to send her away, knowing they can have no future together.
Ten years later, Malik learns that he is unable to bear children. With his brother presumed dead, it’s his responsibility to carry on the royal line. To his shock, he learns from his grandfather that Gracie ended up pregnant from their one night stand, and has a boy, Sam, who is his son. Traveling to America, he shows up on Gracie’s doorstep with an offer – let him be a father to Sam and vacation with him to Alazar. Gracie hasn’t forgotten the young man who swept her off her feet then broke her heart, and her son Sam is a daily reminder of that night. Wary but determined to do what is right for her son, Gracie agrees to travel with Malik back to Alazar. Being with him rekindles the passion they once shared, but will it be enough to make up for the past and create a brand new future as a family?
This story started out strongly for me. I really liked how the characters met (I love a good vacation romance!) , and the charming scene in Rome where Malik and Gracie start to fall for each other. They are both virgins, Malik having lived a very sheltered life in Alazar. Their first sexual experience together is sweet and sensual (not overly explicit) but like a bucket of cold water, the appearance of Malik’s grandfather ruins the afterglow. Being only 22, and the heir to the throne, Malik has no choice but to do his duty for his country, and it doesn’t include having a fling with an American. I felt for both characters as their happiness is brought to an abrupt end.
When we fast forward to the present and the reality of Malik needing an heir and discovering that Gracie had his baby, I found him to be a little too cold and manipulative. He has plans to bring Gracie and Sam to Alazar and basically force them to stay there, which didn’t sit right with me. (It reminded me of those made for TV movies where the woman gets trapped in an Arabic country against her will). Gracie makes the decision to travel to Alazar not knowing Malik’s true intentions. Fortunately Malik turns out to be not as cold as he initially seems, and while in Alazar they rekindle what brought them together in the first place. I did like that Malik was taking steps to improve the status of women in his traditionally male dominated country, and that Gracie could see a legitimate role for herself as Malik’s partner. Malik does redeem himself in the end, though it’s a long time coming. The story takes some very unexpected twists and turns and the ending is somewhat abrupt – I can’t really call it a happy ever after as things are left somewhat up in the air, so it’s more of a happy for now ending. While this isn’t one of my favorites by this author, fans of second chance romances with desert settings may enjoy this one.

Another one!!!
I decided to read two Harlequin novels, both about babies that are heirs to the throne, back to back! No regrets here. I had a great time and got exactly what I needed. Harlequin books are great for breaking my little reading slumps.
Gracie Jones had a romantic night with Malik years ago, and when he finds out the truth years later, he goes to see out Gracie and the son he never knew he had.
Honestly, this one was quite cute. I enjoyed my time with it! There's definitely some tropes in it, but I wasn't reading it to analyze the heck out of it. I wanted a story that would whisk me away and give me some drama and romance. And I got just that! But now I need the sequel and want more books about these characters because I liked them!
Four out of five stars.

I bought the wrong box of HP Books. The H in this one thought being in love made a man weak and he had sex with the h 10 years ago and kicked her out of bed. They were both virgins. She of course gets pregnant and the evil Grandfather buys her off.
Ten years later the H finds out he's sterile and the grandfather says oh wait you have a heir. The H goes to get him and the h and make him his heir.
I just didn't love it. While he was not a man ho during the last ten years he did have sex with a handful of women while she of course did not. That didn't bug me as much as it normally does and maybe it's because I have read two sucky Harlequin's in a row now and my HP-itude is just not feeling it.
There is more drama and then he sends them away after telling the boy he is his Father and basically saying 'smell' you later and the poor kid is like why? Hated that part. The H does have an epiphany and HEA later the book is done. Just didn't move me though. No epilogue though just lets be a family and the end. I say pass.

not worth it!!stupid stubborn hero and doormat heroine!I hated it!!where was the love in this book?all the hero spoke about till the end was his duty to the country and how love made him weak.I couldn't believe his admission of love.

Malik and Gracies story is one of reunited love and it's filled with rich descriptions of beautiful desert lands and palaces and the heartfelt emotion shines thru every page.
Ten years ago Malik and Gracie meet in Rome and share a memorable night. Destined not to be together Malik doesn't discover the consequences until recently after receiving terrible news. The Sultan-to-be needs Gracie and Sam to save his kingdom and he goes about convincing them to stay.
Three lives and hearts are on the line, battle for peace in Malik's world and the life changing moments for him create a story that is spellbinding and had me glued in one sitting. A man of integrity and a man determined to do the right thing by his family makes Malik a wonderful and throughly interesting Hero. Loved Gracie and her happy nature despite what life had thrown her way. I was racing thru the wonderfully woven tale because I couldn't contain my curiosity to how everything would be resolved and I was throughly entertained with the conclusion.
I am excited for book 2, I think it will be as incredibly detailed and perhaps even more emotive than The Secret Heir of Alazar.

2.5 Stars cause I liked the kid.
This book started on such a lovely note. I was soooo hopeful, and then it stalled and never went back to what it was.
The H is the heir to the sultanate of Alazar. His elder brother was kidnapped and assumed dead. His mother died and his father fell apart leaving his son to be raised by a cold hearted grandfather. I hated the grandfather.
The books starts with the H meeting the h at a party in Rome. His first party ever. She’s a nobody from Illinois and just wanted to travel and see the world. The share a few hours of fun, goes back to the H’s room and loses their mutual virginities. Then grandfather butthead busts through the door and calls the h a whore, causes the H to shut down and send the h away in shame.
Ten years later the H learns that he is infertile. He shares this news with his grandfather and learns that he has a son. The h got pregnant after the night they shared and gave birth to a son. Apparently she tried to contact the H, but grandpa asswipe threatened her and bought her off.
Then the story just got awful. I hate the H’s bipolar personality. He ran hot and cold more than my faucet. The h trusted him, although she should have known better, because she wanted him to have a relationship with his son. But he was so under his grandfather’s thumb that he allowed the old man to color any relationship he could have with his child and the h.
I had a hard time finishing this book. I didn’t like the H and I hated the grandfather. Then the long lost brother shows up and automatically regains a the sultanate of a country that he knows nothing about and has training to deal with?!
Nah! I just couldn’t buy this one.

A captivating tale of innocence lost when duty precedes desire! The first half of Kate Hewitt's Alazar duet grabbed out attention and got us invested in the story .. only to be rocked by a surprise that lead us to yearn for the continuation! Looking forward to the follow up to learn what will come!
When happenstance brought them together in their youth in Rome, Grace Jones and Malike al Bahjat shared their innocence with one another in one night of passion before reality burst through the door the following morning! She had no clue he was heir to the throne of Alazar .. nor that his family would abhor the site of her so.
When the knowledge that their dalliance produced a son reaches Malik a decade later, he travels to the US to claim his heir! His electrifying kisses and a reminder of the passion they shared woos Gracie into returning with him to his home country for a short visit for him to get to know his son. Once there, he springs the plans on her of how he must legitimize their son .. by claiming her as his bride!

Gave up on page 11. Felt no connection to the storytelling. The heroine, well, she appeared so flighty in her conversation with the hero it didn't make me want to read more.

The Secret Heir Of Alazar by Kate Hewitt.
Gracie meets Malik while on vacation in France, didn't realize that he was a sheilk until after they had made love, He sends her home and she finds out that she is pregnant and tries to tell him but his grandfather kept the information from him until it was discovered that he was now infertile. and he needs his son so he has a heir once he is sheilk over his country. I really enjoyed the battles that they had over their son. Sam. I liked the way they fell in love. I really enjoyed the book and would recommend to anyone looking for a good book.

I'm really surprised how much I enjoyed and really liked this book especially since this wasn't particularly an intense and angst read that I enjoy from my romances, but it worked in this situation. The big thing for me wasn't necessarily the storyline but the couple. I really liked them together and enjoyed seeing them interact in the book almost from moment one. They had this pull and connection that I really liked seeing play out in the pages. They just worked. They were the pull of this book more than anything.
I know I have said this in other book reviews, I am really not a fan of one night stand tropes and prefer to stay away from these types of stories, though I have become more accepting of them than I was in the past, it's all about the execution and believability. With this book in particular what stood out for me was the fact that they were two virgins that had this instant connection. That just blew my mind and just added a different flair to the story. It's so rare that romances have innocent heroes, and though I understand why that doesn't occur a lot in stories it was a nice refreshing change and totally believable. I think the fact that they were both virgins in the story and they in fact engaged in their first real, intense attraction for one another that lead to the one night together made it feel special because they hadn't given into anyone else. Yes, they were strangers, but they had that connection and it wasn't just about the lust between them. They were just given in to their passions, which felt natural. It was just how the scene was written that I wasn't bothered by the one stand aspect. Again a big part of them was the fact that they were each other's first. That just took the cake.
I will say that I was kind of torn though too because the love scene wasn't really shown and it was more a fade to black scene. On the one hand, and while I was reading it at the time, I was okay with it and understood why it wasn't shown and was another reason that the one night scene didn't bother me. I knew that there would be a bigger payoff in the end, and I was looking forward to that. On the other hand, once it was confirmed that it was his first time too than my perspective kind of changed because I wanted to see their first time scene in both of their eyes and not just the aftermath. It so rare to have a virgin hero that it would have been nice to see his reaction to his first time and live that experience through his eyes or even hers. They had such a great connection early on that I wanted to see that through the experience of their first time together. I was kind of back and forth in my feelings on that.
Though the other two love scenes came way later than I expected, they were satisfying. It was nice to see that renewal of their physical connection after ten years being apart. It was still as sensual, hot and sexy as it had been in the past. But there was more than the physical just like their first time. And those two scenes were at the point where they were finally at the meeting of minds and ready to renew their connection. It just showed them come together and get closer.
As for the emotional components of the story, I thought was good, but I felt it could have been pushed a little further to create more tension between the pair. Though it didn't bother me as much in this story like I would have expected, but I think if it went that step further I think it would have put it over the top for me. Don't get me wrong there were some moments that were filled with longing and hurt, but it didn't last quite as long as I would have liked. Things just seemed to be gotten over too quickly.
An example of that was the end scene, which felt a tad abrupt and ended the story was too quickly. It was almost a "that's it" type of feeling. There needed to be more there than there actually was. Like I thought she forgave him way too easily without him having to grovel. He needed to grovel especially in the way he rejected her. He really needed to make up for actions just a little bit more. He needed to work for it and make a grand gesture but he just didn't.
Overall I really enjoyed this story. It was the palatable connection that really got to me and made me be absorbed in their story. Just the they had something special from the moment they met, and it was a real nice moment. I really liked them together. I don't know what it was but I just got them as a couple. They worked for me. Plus the fact that they were each other's first put an extra special spin on the story. I loved that because it made it unique and fresh from other romances. I liked their innocence that the shared and that the experience that together. I just liked them together and just see it all play out in their story. Could it have been more intense and angst especially with the premise of him trying to get her to marry him so they could legitimize their son so he could later rule? Yes. Things were kind of just brushed the surface and didn't dig deeper, which would have put the story over the top for me, but that didn't mean I didn't enjoy this story. Heroine was a doormat. Hero was an asshat. What could have been a great story of secdon chnaces instead is a story of selfishness and blame. I found myself not caring about the outcome.

After Malik's brother was kidnapped, he was raised by his harsh grandfather to become Sultan of Alazar and to root out any softness- including emotions such as love and kindness. At the age of 22 he rebelled for one glorious night with innocent Gracie. With the morning came reality & he rejected her. Ten years later, Malik must reconnect with her for the sake of his country.
The angst was huge here! I loved that you got both Malik's *and* Gracie's point of view, but even so I wasn't sure there was going to be a HEA for this one.

Ok story! The story begins when after 10 years Malik discovers that he is a father. He had a son with Grace who he met on a trip to Italy. Throw in a nasty grandfather and finding out your infertile the only solution is get your son and his mother to come to Alazar where you will marry. However, not all is smooth when another wrench is thrown the brother that disappeared years earlier returns and will become the rightful Sultan!

An o.k. story - I'm not sure what was 'off' about the story but it just didn't engage me. I generally love sheikh stories but this one was just off-kilter a bit.
I'm looking forward to the 2nd book in this duet, though, maybe it will smooth out my feelings for this first one. Sometimes the full-story aspect can makes things better.

Like me, Hewitt treats themes involving children with great sensitivity and emotional depth — a quality I truly admire and strive to emulate in my own writing. I have been a fan of her work for many years. Well done, Kate — beautiful storytelling.

The hero is cold for his own reasons which I won't spoil and is all about doing his duty for his country and I understand that its important and there is unrest that must be settled but what troubled me was he ended up playing with the emotions of a young child, his son. He as an adult and a father had a responsibility to look after, protect and even bear the brunt of things for his child but instead he treats the heroine like he does at the end(which is bad enough) but also his son who is a young and impressionable young man.
I felt that both the heroine and her son maybe would have been better off without him if he is so selfish to put himself before the child.

This book was good. A quick read for me but it made me cry in some spots. A little bit emotional for the story line of Prince Malik al Bahjat and how he finds out about his son..10 years later. Malik is a bit of a cold fish, having been raised by his grandfather to be sultan after his death and had no kindness from him. Gracie Jones is out for adventure before she goes to college, meets up with Malik and have 1 night before Malik's grandfather finds them and makes her leave. Now 10 years later Malik finds out from his grandfather that he is a dad. Great story line and good ending although not quite the way I thought it would end. Highly recommend.

It's a Harlequin romance, so I did not have high hopes for this book. I was right. The male character is horrible to the female character- bordering on abusive.
Would not even recommend this book as a beach read.
