GURPS Fourth Edition

GURPS Mars Attacks

Rate this book
Earth Is Under Attack!

The Martians descended upon Earth without warning. Saucers filled the skies. Blaster-wielding soldiers, giant insects, and unstoppable robots slaughtered the human defenders on the ground. It could have been the end of humanity – if not for the brave scientists of the Novas Vira, the only ones who saw the invasion coming! Now the fate of Earth hangs in the balance as both sides turn to science, desperately inventing new weapons and defenses in the hope of finding the one that wins the war.

GURPS Mars Attacks contains everything you need to join the fight and make a difference:

Choose your side. Are you among the conquerors here to grant Earth the honor of being added to the Martian Empire? Or are you fighting to save your planet – either on your own or as part of the Novas Vira, Tiger Corps, or United Earth Alliance?
Set the scope. Play unprepared civilians stepping up to face Martian raiders, bold saucer pilots defending troops from waves of human jets, high-level officers making decisions that impact the entire war, or anyone else you can imagine!
Lock and load. It'll take spirit to win this war, sure, but also technology. Learn about the weapons, defenses, vehicles, and strange inventions of both sides – and take advantage of streamlined rules to make new ones.
GURPS Mars Attacks requires the GURPS Basic Set, Fourth Edition. The detailed setting and descriptions of Martian society and technology can be used with any game system.

Its probably because one of my first interactions with Steve Jackson Games was Toon, but I've always felt GURPS lent itself more towards silly and comedic gaming than anything else, despite the fact that its supposed to be a generic and universal system for any kind of setting. That holds true here, where GURPS works well for this pulp mashup of brain-melting heat rays, aliens who want to steal our women, and brave '50s soldiers battling against shrink beams and giant insects.

This rendition of Mars Attacks is very much in the vein of the card set from the '60s, and NOT the awful Pierce Brosnan movie. The only nod to that particular piece of unbelievably awful cinema is a side bar about possible secret weaknesses that might defeat the alien menace, with a snarky line about "the most ludicrous possible option might be Martians taking 1d damage per minute exposed to country music."

Movie issues aside, this is a really fun (although short) manual that lets you play either as humans defending the Earth from invasion, or as back-stabbing Martians looking to rise in the ranks of the hierarchy while blasting gross Earthlings to slag.

Between all the campaign options, character profiles, and absolutely gorgeous art, there's a lot to like here whether you want to run something in the '50s like the source material or instead do a modern day campaign. My only complaints are the brevity (it seems odd to do a hardcover of less than 100 pages) and the overabundance of page number references. It's not hard to flip through 96 pages to find any given section, so having 15 or more parenthetical page references per two page spread is overkill.

A great GURPS setting for lots of exciting and silly fun games. The full color art work from the Mars Attacks cards just make this book visual treat. The author helps the game master to create a logical and fun background for their Mars Attacks campaign. Helping the GM with suggestions and advice to keep the action moving and not to let players get board.
