The Cahills are the most powerful family the world has ever known—a family so influential, they've shaped the course of human history. The source of their power has been hidden around the world in the form of 39 Clues. But the Cahills have shadow enemies, the Vespers, and they’re closer than the Cahills know. Will the power of the 39 Clues be used for good…or for the darkest evil?
Seven stories reveal their never-before-told secrets of the Cahill family. Follow the Cahills from the chilling attack that caused Grace Cahill to launch an all-out hunt for the 39 Clues, to the rise of Vesper One and the first step in his terrifying plan for world domination. The Cahills are counting on you to keep their secrets. Remember: Trust no one.
These were cute little supplements to the original series. Some were better than others, but overall, I still love all of the characters and their very different personalities.
As I’ve explained in my earlier post, this book is a collection of short stories set before or during the first series, published online in 2011 but was first published in physical form in 2013 after the first book in the second series. And since I follow publication order, it’s okay for me to delve back to some previous stories before continuing their second adventures. It gave me more context as well for their current threat and some background stories on other characters which I’m a sucker for.
I’m kinda torn by the first story titled Legacy. Maybe because it somehow showed what other prequels do, telling a story amping up the would-be threat but never mentioning it again during the run of the original. Although some tidbits were interesting and definitely gave me smile on mentioning some future plot points.
For the second story, I thought I would be bored by a retelling of the inciting incident of the first series. But it turned out to be connecting points from both series. It’s like I’m watching flashback episodes of LOST again, revealing some clues for more mysteries to come… and I kinda like it.
The third story, or I guess a montage of side quests showed that the second series would focused on the next generation of Cahills, our teen spies doing their clue hunt not knowing they are also being spied and hunted. It was mid but still add something more during the original clue hunt.
The fourth one titled “Crushed” was a total crushing moments for some of our characters. Well, not really. It could be considered filler by some but it kinda connects more to the first few scenes of the second series. I liked that even though it is short, characters made some impactful decisions that could haunt them in the future.
I kinda liked the fifth one as well. It’s titled “Turbulence”. It spent some time for bonding of the young Cahill cousins. However, the seriousness of the foreboding destiny caught up to them, or at least to Amy. I really wanted them to just have fun quests wherein they’re not enemies but working with each other. And this was just a tease.
The sixth one titled “Invasion” was sort-of a Home Alone with Dan and his new friend, Atticus. I admit, this somehow fleshed out the new interesting characters from the first book in the second series, but also somehow dispelled some of my ideas about them.
And lastly, “Fireworks” was a short fun wrap-up for the Cahill team before their much deadlier next adventures. It gave me a nice goodbye to the first series. They will never get back to that. But saying hi to the new threats. The ending made me want to fight the Vespers as well.
A compilation of seven short stories, this book keeps switching between the characters and their personal struggles and action packed chases.
Spanning from the start of the Clue Hunt to before the Vesper Attacks, it provides some insight into the activities of the Vespers observed, planned, and executed various moves against the Cahills and it all ends on a nice little note.
While it does fill in a few gaps here and there, it takes some liberty on the storyline by making some essential and borderline major changes here and there which mess with the consistency of the same.
As far as the short stories, they're written relatively well for their length and would be better to considered as one contiguous collection instead. It was better than the bigger names that wrote Vespers Rising anyway.
However, they promised one explosive secret which they never revealed. Everything written here has already been established beforehand in previous titles.
Meh. The skydiving thing really irked me, and I really don't think Ian was that wishy washy. Also, mention of the watcher, then nothing? It was just disconjointed all over. Looking forward to getting back to the original writers, not this new one. Skipping Cahill Files cuz I just didn't enjoy this.
This was a combo of all 7 ebooks from Rapid Fire spin off. My favorite are the ones that center around Grace followed by Amy and Dan. I think Legacy was my absolute favorite and I would give that one 5 stars for sure.
