“Beautiful stone,” her enemy said. “Where did you get it?”

Alice Morgan is back in Melbourne, mourning the loss of her cousin Toby. The Doom Stone has mysteriously returned to her, but the Gates to Middengard are closed. And when she befriends Josh Winter, a boy too smart for his own good, a hidden enemy stirs.

Desperate to return to Middengard, Alice takes an unproven and dangerous route. As a puzzled Josh stumbles his own way through, he becomes an unwitting pawn in a fight he doesn’t understand.

But Middengard is under threat and time is running out. Alice must find the Second Stone – a Stone with equal if not more powers than her own. As she finds herself in a deadly race against new and fearsome enemies, who amongst her friends has turned against her?

The second book of the thrilling Middengard Sagas, Stone Quest is an epic fantasy suitable for readers of all ages.

Characters

Alice and Toby (thankfully) are back for book 2. There are other minor characters but two new main show runners that jump in: Josh and Orla. There is also the mysterious Isolde, who is likely more complicated then she appears, but a great addition to the book. I still struggled with Alice at times, but Toby is such a welcome sight! Josh was an interesting character, because of how unlikely he was to be a hero or to be on such an adventure. He is not who most people would think of in a fantasy novel, which is why he added an interesting layer to the story. I liked Orla from the get go, and I wish she had more time. I won't give too much away but Alice's parents also get a little more attention and get a few parts from their POV. Stanor had almost no role in this second book, which was a big departure from book 1.

Plot

After the craziness from book 1, Alice is stuck in our world. Desperation leads to bringing her back and getting sent on a quest to get the second Doom Stone. Overall the quest felt strange, almost like it wasn't really happening and the impact of events didn't seem to really matter. It was a bit of a downer, but the events happening back in the city (Josh, Orla, and Toby) were more then enough to make up for it. The darkness is not over and whatever evil should have ended in book 1, isn't satisfied. Furthermore, the plot was predictable on what would happen, just not how which kept the book flowing in curiosity on how the author would play it out.

Overall

The writing was similar with a juvenile feel that sometimes clashed with the plot and character's ages. There is course language in this one in at least one stop that felt unnecessary and bold for a middle school book. The settings were descriptive and at times it was like watching a movie play out, while other times I'd just want the point to be made and the next scene to come. This does end on quite a cliffhanger that I imagine leads right into book 3 without the length of time that lapsed between book 1 and book 2. Despite some of its draw backs, it was much easier to get going and held a steady pace nearly all the way through with a sudden climax, leaving much unresolved. This being a series, it was to be expected. The Norse Mythology was still there but mostly in the background.

This novel was more fleshed out and showed significant progress from the first book. A quest for a stone pales in comparison to the events in the city, but overall had me turning pages to see what came next. A middle school fantasy novel that others may enjoy as well.

I love The Stone Quest even more than The Stone Keeper ! Action packed and full of twists and turns! This book has kept me guessing from beginning to end.

The Stone Keeper (Book 1) was a riveting and enjoyable read but Book 2 has left me wanting even more. I need to know what happens next!

In Book 2, Alice is back in Melbourne, mourning the loss of her cousin, Toby, and wondering if her friend, Jess, is okay. Somehow, her stone was returned to her after she had thrown it away but she is unable to return to Middengard.

While out on a walk during an unexpected weekend away to Portsea with her relatives, Alice finds herself transported back to Middengard. War is coming and it is imperative that Alice finds the other Doom Stone so that good can conquer evil. Only the Stone Keeper can sense the stone, which has been hidden by the Aetheling (Gods).

Who can she trust? People aren’t as they appear. Events begin to unfold and there are some interesting character developments, but we will have to wait for Book 3 to unveil the rest of the mysteries.

This book ends on a HUGE cliff hanger! It’s a very exciting read and I can’t wait to find out what happens in Book 3. June, please put me out of my misery soon! I am loving your series!

I read book II in the Middengard Saga during a recent fantasy reading binge that included Robin Hobbs' high fantasy world and Ben Aaronovitch's magical London. So, it was nice to finish off the session with something that's a bit England, a bit Australia and a bit high fantasy.

This is the second book in the series and it introduces a new and compelling character, Josh, along with his father, Adrian. I really enjoyed the story thread that these two brought to the narrative.

Plenty of action and magic and some familiar images from Melbourne and Portsea.

I'm looking forward to book III.

I enjoyed the first book in this series and so went on to read the second outing. I don't read a lot of fantasy, but given the action moves between the real world and the fantasy world I can go along with it. In Stone Quest, new characters are introduced and I felt this added interest and momentum. The action is largely fast paced and as with Stone Keeper, the ending is something of a cliff hanger.

The characters are well drawn and the references to Norse mythology continue to intrigue. Whilst clearly aimed at younger readers (and I'm more at the other end of the scale) I'd say these books can be enjoyed by everyone.

I may have predicted who is the bad guy in book 2, but I had no idea how it will be revealed. So much happened - new characters, new lessons, death, war, search for the second stone, and betrayal. This book had me on edge for most of the adventure. I didn't know if someone would die at any moment or someone would betray or worse forget the adventure all together. I can't wait to read book 3. It's next on my list. This is a great fantasy adventure. ^_^

I’d say this series will be good for 15+. Book 2 could be for a little older like 17+ mainly because there are some important concepts to grasp that a younger person may miss and not enjoy the story as much.
