If anything, this installation of the Phase trilogy was better than the first. Hearing Naomi's perspective, who had seemed so mean and unjustified in the first book, helped me see the validity of her experiences and love her. Naomi's fire and fierceness charmed me, and watching her change (not necessarily for the better) under the care of the genuinely terrifying Morrells was incredibly written. Newman has crafted an absorbing, engaging, suspenseful continuation of the Phase story, one that should definitely be read. The focus on new characters was exciting and gratifying, and returning to old characters really did feel like going home. I'll be waiting for the third in the series; I'm excited to hopefully return to Jules and Sophie, and see how Naomi's growth affects the pack.

This book was amazing and very well written. The author really expanded on the world by bringing another pack into the mix. I'm not sure how likable a character Naomi was, but she was really fun to read, and it was interesting to see her growth throughout the book. I felt the tension between her and the secrets of the new pack throughout the book and couldn't wait to finish it to see how it turned out. In all, this was a great sequal to Phase, and the author set it up well for the next book. I can't wait to read the third book in the trilogy and see how it all turns out.

EC Newman's "Shift" follows its excellent predecessor while simultaneously managing to stand on its own, elevate the quality of the original and expand on the shifter world. It's everything you want from a sequel, and when it's done, it leaves you gasping for more. Though to be clear, "Shift" at times has more in common with a "spin-off" than a sequel, following a major character from the first book - Naomi - as she adjusts to life in a new pack with very different rules - and dangerous consequences for breaking those rules. As one of the less sympathetic characters in "Phase", Newman certainly has her work cut out for her, but in general, Newman excels developing Naomi's character while still keeping her consistent. An override sense of tension and dread adds to this, as the reader gets the sense Naomi is in over her head from the first chapter.
If there is one issue with the book, it's that there is such a significant gap of time between the release of the first book and second that it's tough to remember all the characters and events, leading to something of a "learning curve". As such, I definitely recommend reading these books back-to-back to keep the characters fresh. The other issue is that many of ths fun and likable characters of the first book don't have as big of role in the sequel outside of primarily flashbacks.
Still, "Shift" is a powerful step up for Newman, who already excelled at "Phase". This book is definitely recommended for fans of paranormal and young adult.

I loved the way very real teen issues (sex, abuse) were dealt with in ways that were not overt or preachy, but still treated the problems as legitimate situations to be addressed even in the fantasy world.
