Texas has been good to Kate Stevens. The Lone Star state has become her new home, complete with a prosperous career as a crochet author and designer. Surrounded by dear friends and with her daughter, Vanessa, a stone’s throw away at Regency College, Kate’s life couldn’t be better.
That is until a single word on a crackling cellphone call turns Kate’s world upside down.
Vanessa, away on a college-sponsored archeological dig in the sweltering summer heat, goes missing along with three other students. Kate holds on to a single thread of hope, even as more and more evidence at the dig site indicates foul play.

Kate and Peter are joined by Vivi Lawrence, Kate’s best friend, and Texas Ranger Sam Tennyson. They first must overcome a bumbling, if not complicit, local police chief whose main objective seems to be putting up more barriers in the investigation.
Kate finds danger and mayhem at every turn. Will she be able to solve the mystery and bring Vanessa home? Or will this parent’s worst nightmare end as Vanessa and her friends are finished off?

Finished Off by Jan Fields is a delightful cozy filled with twists and turns, just like in crocheting. Kate Stevens is our amateur detective. She designs new patterns in crochet and creates clothing and accessories. She moved from Maine to Sage Hills, Texas, to be near her college-aged daughter Vanessa. Life is good until Vanessa goes missing.
Fields creates strong-willed female characters who don’t shy away from danger. Even when their boyfriends tell them to stay back. Kate is dating police detective Peter Matthews, and her best friend Vivi Lawrence is dating Texas Ranger Sam Tennyson.
Things become complicated once Kate and Peter rent a cabin for the weekend near Elijahville, Texas, by the archeological dig site where Vanessa and a small crew of fellow college students were last seen working. In this close-knit small town, gossip abounds. Kate and Peter must sift through both fact and fiction to discover what has happened to Vanessa and the college students.
If you enjoy a good “whodunit” with a dash of romance, then you’ll love Finished Off by Jan Fields.
