After rescuing Ziva from Somalia, Tony comes online as a powerful guide. The Center says he has a perfect match, the ideal sentinel, waiting for him. But his sentinel isn’t interested. As Tony finds his way into a new future, he finds that something imperfect can be what he actually needs.
11/2023: For a good portion of this "~47K" reread, which, tbh, was nearly like a first time because I didn't remember much of how the story progressed, I expected to be rounding my 3.x★ down, but once things started looking up for Tony, my rating went up, too. The story's, and Tony's, focus shifted from (~semi-spoiler~) Gibbs's too-long-unaddressed damage and how Abby isn't the only one to claim to care like family while not truly considering Tony's needs, to building something better with a friend-becoming-more who genuinely cares and respects him. There's humor along the way in the recounting of one of the crazy situations Tony seems to find himself in regularly, with a real *character* of an offscreen senior-citizen OC. Then the tale ends with Tony repeatedly demonstrating his intuitive skill as an investigator, his ability to learn even more, and his newer BAMF abilities as an extraordinary Guide, plus of course reaffirming his loving bond with his Sentinel after the case crisis is over. Very satisfying!
