Justin Caine was a chill kind of guy. A healer. A peacekeeper.
Was.
Until Kendall Sorbis cooked up a massacre on the winter solstice and woke the demon sleeping in Justin's blood. Maybe when Sorbis is dead, Justin can get his soul and his girl back. Maybe, if Magdalena ever pulls her head out of her ass.
Maggie has her own issues. Such as stumbling over dead demons, and not wanting to see Justin mated to some other woman. She just needs a little peace to sort things out.
But the demon pulling Sorbis's strings has other plans. It's past time for him to return to the human Plane. He has an ancient score to settle...one that reaches back in time to Spain, and Maggie's ancestors...
This is a very interesting book, it has a few twists and is a little dark in places with a touch of gore, but it also has a softer side with a love story that runs throughout. the characters are interesting and the plot keeps you turning the pages. if you enjoy a paranormal romance with a twist of the dark side, then I believe that you will enjoy this book.
I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review.
Demon Rage begins in the kitchen of the Caine homestead, several weeks after the Winter Solstice. The healers in the room are sitting on bad news and Magdalena can't help freaking out about the possibility he's dying. Justin, on the other hand, is holding back the gravest sin in the doctor/patient relationship...not telling his healers the truth. When Kendall Sorbis blasted him with angry energy and left him for dead, the rage settled deep inside Justin's soul. It doesn't like happiness...seeing it, feeling it, being around it...causes him to lash out with violence. Considering he's part-demon and that demon is only now waking up, getting the rage out of him should be priority number one for the Caine's odd clan of tri-breds, faeries, and witches. It's not, though. Kendall Sorbis is still out there, and it turns out, he's just a puppet for a much bigger bad.
Justin and Magdalena's adversarial romance has always been my favorite part of the Caine Brothers stories. Justin's mellow shell paired wonderfully with Maggie's sharp wit. In Demon Rage, the pair are broken and faced with the consequences of their genetics colliding with their insecurities. Inside Maggie's skin, she is struggling to be the woman Justin loves while fearing his soulmate will appear at any moment. Justin, sans soul for most of the book, has already fought and won what's his. They could be together if she'd stop sabotaging their relationship. Their dance has changed quite a bit from their Benedict and Beatrice routine, but they still dance.
In addition to Gabriel and Gregor, Ms. Ashworth gives us a lovely appearance from the Caine family patriarch, Gideon, who appears for a few delightful moments to give his troubled middle son wisdom regarding demons and barn cats.
I've been waiting four years, on pins and needles, for Demon Rage, and it was so worth the wait. I would recommend it to fans of the Caine Brothers series and fans of the TV show Lucifer.
Until I met this author, I was never interested in books featuring demons, or, in this case, tri-breds - a combination of demon, fae and human blood. But just like the Wizard of Oz introduced me to the concept of beautiful, GOOD witches, so the Caine brothers series introduced me to the concept of smokin' hot, GOOD guys of demon heritage.
Justin Caine is no exception, and he and powerful witch Maggie are poised to be a power couple, kicking ass and taking bad demon names. Except... maybe they're not meant to be a couple, after all. And the demons and their henchmen, of course, have other plans.
Loved the story, the couple, and the family background of other Caine brothers and their partners, featured in other books of this series. Fighting demons is a team sport, after all. But this book works fine as a stand-alone, as well.
Wow!! This series is so intense, an emotional rollercoaster, and down right frightening. You will be biting your fingernails and setting on the edge of your seat. Highly recommend.
