"1, Asvina, Sanivara, Shalivahana Shake 604
23rd September 682 CE

The vultures. Always the vultures. "Messengers of the Gods," the Persians of the old religion called them, purifiers of the soul. But here they were, doing what they had done since before the age of man- feasting on the carrion of the dead. The glare of the noon sun reflected off the dry earth.
The hard ground was cracked and wrinkled. A fog of rotting smells choked the air. The broad plain lay covered in corpses. Soldiers, camp followers, generals, and pack animals lay prostrate
on the ground. Bodies lay in mangled heaps, mutilated beyond recognition. Stuck into those heaps were the battle standards of the fallen army."

September 682 CE:  The army of Islam stands ready to sweep the Hindu Kingdom of Kapisa into oblivion. Only two warriors stand in its way—Indrajit, the dashing warrior from India and Rustom the Persian.

When the two warriors capture a secret Arab message, little do they know of the wild ride ahead! They must race against time and evil forces to deliver the message to Kapisa.

Will they get the message through in time? Will the evil forces overcome them? A swashbuckling tale of sword and sorcery with demonic beasts, the undead and evil unlimited.

I received this book as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaway.

Indrajit: Siege of Kamboja is the story of how Indrajit and Rustom find a message on a fallen Arab on a battlefield in Afghanistan and embark on a journey to the east to deliver the message to the king of Kapisa. Along the way they are harassed by supernatural forces trying to stop them.

To be honest, I was bored. I just never got a reason to care about anyone in this book. The forces of evil were basically just names on a page. There was no description, no insight into their plan. Near as I can figure, they just wanted to kill Indrajit and Rustom.

The antagonists all sounded interestin:, the jinn who shape shifts into a vulture and shadows the heroes; Jarotaka, the once-human demon imprisoned in his fortress and determined to escape and Zahhak, a seemingly immortal sorcerer who

But then they have almost no impact on the plot. They're little more than speed bumps for Indrajit and Rustom on their journey.

Then the plot is essentially a sequence of events with little connecting them. The main characters meet a naga and a guru, doesn't have anything to do with anything though. Any fight consists of a few sword strokes before the protagonists win. There's just no tension.

I got to page 90 or so when I realized that I didn't care about any of these characters or what was happening.

It is very hard to review a book like this, which I received as a giveaway all the way from India. At its best, it reminded me of the Iliad, but perhaps not always in a good way. Lots of heroic mythical deeds, magical weapons, divine intervention, battles and travels, and an aura of historic epic. However, it also felt very strongly of a translation - and not an expert one - that was just the bare bones of a story with words that didn't quite fit together. If this was a true translation of an ancient text, it would feel authentic. But as modern fiction, it felt awkward and difficult to read. It wasn't engaging or exciting or drawing me in. It felt like I was reading for a class and would need help to figure out what had happened. I liked the essence of the story, but the actual text and writing made it impossible to enjoy.
