Amanda Pillar is addicted to writing. Not in the fun kind of way, more in the has-to-get-her-fix kind of way. But that's a good thing, right? It means she's busy working on her next book and has plans for many more to come, all with lots of snark. Because snark.

Amanda has had almost a dozen books published, alongside a variety of short stories, as well as solo and co-editing over half a dozen anthologies. People say it's because she's an 'over-achiever' but, in reality, Amanda doesn't understand the concept of 'relaxation'. (Please feel free to explain it to her. Use small words.) Compounding this issue, Amanda has commenced work on a PhD. Because she's crazy.

Oh, and in her day job, she's an archaeologist. (And no, she doesn't get chased around site by rogue boulders, thank the flying spaghetti monster. She doesn't even want to imagine the OH&S paperwork THAT would cause).

Betrayed is a very well written novella by Amanda Pilla. The plot is well developed and the author actually covers a lot for a shorter novella. I really like her two main characters and of course you can never turn away a strong female lead! There is a nice twist hidden within. All in all I really enjoyed this shorter story and I am glad that the author took the time to write it down. I think she should actually write more about the bigger picture story that is still hidden behind all of this!

I had not (YET) read the other books in the series - this very short novelette moves very fast- I’m interested in seeing more of this world! Cade & Ruby - interesting couple- tiger & Bear! Lol. But now I need to know what happened to Ruby’s brother- & sister- & the wold that Cade is looking for!
I received this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

2.5 stars. Rounded down mainly because it was so short. There was nothing offensive or annoying but it was so short we don’t spend enough time with Ruby & Cade to get a sense of who they are or to really care about their relationship.

Spoilers are marked.

I got this novella when I signed up for the author’s newsletter. Unfortunately I have no previous experience with her works, and silly me didn’t realize this was a romance. (lol @me) Thus, if you like short romances and actually read the back cover, you’re probably fine.

I was pretty excited when I started this. First off, I love the idea of werebears and second, I adore stories about siblings who have to rescue each other.

To be clear, this story is not about Ruby escaping her captors, rescuing her brother, and generally kicking butt and being an awesome werebear. This is not about Cade teaming up with Ruby to rescue a werewolf—a wolf that we end up knowing NOTHING about except he’s apparently missing.

This is about Ruby being kidnapped and held hostage until Cade comes along, searching for his wolf pal (are they pals? I don’t know. Maybe Cade is a bounty hunter or a PI or a professional stalker. Don’t ask me.), and finds a pretty werebear chained in a cage.

“Ted was lying, that was certain. And then there was that smell of the were who wasn’t there...it was absolutely delicious.”

I would like to explain that while I usually avoid pure romances, I do enjoy some of them. But I need chemistry! I need to see these characters get along and fall in love, not just lust after each other’s scent and walk around naked.

“Underneath the strong scent, she caught the taste of warm fur and mint; it made her mouth water.”

The point of view switches between Ruby and Cade. I didn’t particularly mind either of them, but the romance felt so forced. Ruby’s been kidnapped for a month while her brother was sold as a slave, but when Cade rescues her, she stops thinking about how to rescue her brother and starts thinking about how good the strange weretiger smells—even though she points out she was worried her captors would rape her the entire month!

“‘Maybe we should keep her for ourselves. Have some fun.’
‘Fun?’ Jeb’s voice was skeptical.
‘Do I need to tell you about the birds and the bees, brother?’
Red hazed her vision.”

I understand she’s a super strong werebear, but she’s been starved and restrained in a small cage for four weeks. She’s not in good shape. Yet there is no thought about this guy trying anything. He just smells good.

“And he smelled a-f***ing-mazing.”

The thing is, Cade thinks she probably was raped and tiptoes around stripping to shift shape. Ruby never worries about it again in her POV.

“‘You’re naked.’
‘So?’ Weres didn’t normally mind a bit of nudity.
She turned to face the bare wall. She’s been held prisoner, fool. You don’t know what was done to her.”

As for the rest of the plot, I assume it gets resolved in another story because (SPOILERS) neither Ruby’s brother or Cade’s wolf pal are found. (END SPOILERS) This story is about the romance and nothing else.

“Unlike their vampire cousins, weres had a psychic sense of smell that clued them in on the identity of their ideal partner. And she smelled a-f***ing-mazing.”

I really wish I had liked this more. The idea is cool, but it’s just not my kind of story. If you like quick, clean paranormal romances, you’ll probably like it just fine.
