This was a sweet, sexy, and often comical story about a pretty, 35 year-old New York City romance author who engages in a steamy hot affair with a couple of young (20 somethings) studly, Texas bull riders while attending a romance writers convention (sounded like one of the RT conventions) in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Jenna has been told by her agent that her romances have become boring, and she needs to spice up her sex scenes. The agent wants her to write a "cowboy romance" because that is the current hot trend. Jenna figures since she's already heading to Tulsa (that's cowboy country, right?) for the romance writers convention she can do a little research while in town and study the cowboys at a professional bull riding event. There she meets horn dog best friends Mustang (the blond charmer) and Slade (the dark, intense one), who never met a woman they couldn't conquer--usually together. Jenna starts out seeking their assistance about incorporating some bull riding background into her story, but when the guys read a rough draft of her story and critique her sex scenes, things get a little more personal. Jenna at first has no intentions of getting physically involved with the persistent Romeos, but it is her birthday, she's feeling kind of depressed over her stalled career...and maybe these two young studs can spice up her life and her writing skills? But what will happen if the physical connection turns emotional? Are Jenna and her sexy men prepared for what happens next?

Somehow this book manages to be cute, comical, and steamy hot. Even though there was some ménage scenes, they never came off as sleazy either, probably because they weren't written as explicitly as they could have been. But that was okay, because CJ certainly got the point across. I liked the heroine, Jenna. Even though we don't get a whole lot of background about her, I found her extremely likable and relatable. The men were pretty sweet too. I found Mustang to be pretty perceptive for such a sweet talking, studly character, and a good friend to the quieter, more intense Slade. I do wish that Slade would've fought harder for Jenna though, and that we learned a little more backstory about the two best friends. Slade was darn lucky to have a friend who cared about him as much as Mustang did.

If you're looking for a light, uncomplicated, sexy read, that's hot in a not so over-the-top way, then you should enjoy this one. It's fast paced, has plenty of comical moments, and enough steam to keep you turning the pages. Can't wait to read the follow-up, Bucked. 4 stars

Unridden is one of those books that really makes me wish for a half star because it was better than three stars, but it never quite captures a fourth star.

Jenna Block is a romance novelist from NYC(how masturbatory, a romance novel about a romance author, but I digress) researching cowboys for her next novel. While in Tulsa at a romance authors' convention, she meets Mustang Jackson (so nicknamed for his oversized wang of mighty lovin') and Slade Bower, two pro bull riders in town for a championship. They meet for drinks to discuss bull riding and flirt a bit before Jenna goes home for the evening, promising to attend the event the next evening.

I liked that Johnson had the heroine go back to her room. I find a lot of menage stories have a woman falling quickly into bed with two strangers, a decision so reckless I can hardly respect the heroine afterwards. Instead, Johnson takes two nights for Mustang to charm and Slade to intrigue her before Jenna basically says "Fuck it, why not?" That it happens on her 35th birthday, Jenna deciding she's not getting any younger, also lent more realism to the situation for me.

The sex scenes are rather sweet, considering the content. Johnson mercifully avoids the play by play style sex scene so common to the genre and focuses on their thoughts, feelings and reactions throughout. We see Mustang having a fun time, Slade fighting jealousy and Jenna trying to process it all.

However, this is about where the book started to lose its focus. A romance forming out of a menage is conflict enough. There was no need for a large age gap (Mustang's 25, Slade 27) or another man's interest to be thrown into the mix. I guess she intended Chase's attentions to show Slade's attachment and jealousy, but it would have been far less messy to do so with Mustang.

As a result, I felt the romantic relationship between Jenna and Slade ended up underdeveloped. I was surprised to find this would not end in a permanent menage. The connection between Slade and Jenna seemed no stronger than between her and Mustang. The tenuous connection between these two meant the ending was more of a HFN than HEA. These two may call it love, but they know so little of each other that they are more accurately infatuated and only beginning their courtship. I wouldn't call the ending unsatisfying, as I'd prefer this to a hasty marriage, but it is far less tied up and neat than your average romance.

Overall, I enjoy Johnson's voice and style and found she creates real, multi-faceted characters. Despite this book's flaws, it was still a joy to read and a good story. I'll definitely pick up future books of hers.

Woah Momma!! Not just one sexy cowboy... BUT TWO!!!!!!

The quiet and sexy Slade and the silver tongued, well endowed Mustang. Yup, you got my attention!

She needs them for her new book and they wanted her for some extra curricular activities... It didn't take long for her to throw caution to the wind and let her hair down. You go girl!!!!

Don't forget, this isn't just smut... there is a romance novel in there too.

Slade is falling for Jenna but he doesn't realize it. What he does know, he doesn't want Mustang anywhere near her!

Wow, be careful where you read UnRidden! Book may result in stupid big grin and flushed cheeks...

Whoa Boy! I'm seriously blushing writing this, talk about hot ménage à trois! I have never felt drawn to read a romance or erotic romance with more than two participants in the bedroom ( in the story mind you! ) but somehow as I wanted to read a modern western I saw this book pop-up on Goodreads. Got my hands on it and was bit surprised as the two bull riders catch a girl off the audience and um... go at it. That's not the story however ( just Chapter 1 ) but it just shocked me a little... now to the story!

Slade Bower and Mustang Jackson are pro bull riders, best friends since the beginning, life is pretty good, new town, new girls, every night, and the girls don't mind taking two cowboys to bed at the same time. Though Slade is starting to get jaded and doesn't see the fun where there used to be a lot.

Queue in Jenna a romance novel writer getting her wrist slapped for not coming up with a book trendy enough, and as she refused to write about space vampire pirates she goes for the easier choice cowboys, of which she knows nothing about. Luckily it just happens that her author's conference in Tulsa also hosts A Bull Riding Championship and its pretty much Kismet!

Jenna finds Slade and Mustang after 'the show' and persuades them to help her with her facts and learning what being a cowboy is like - little does she know Slade and Mustang have others things in mind for the night, mainly bedding Jenna. But Jenna's not a groupie and the cowboys need to change tactics to get her in the game.

This story could have easily been an exploitation of the female character but it sure steered well away from that, so well that I would actually call this a sweet story! whjat?! Yeah you heard me, a sweet threesome story. You can tell Slade starting to fall for her right away, and Mustang is just so damn charming there is no way any girl can resist that guy, and the two have the most entertaining bantering dialog. Jenna is fun, and not at all naive, like you might expect for a girl who gives into two guys.

Now let's get to the sex - Whoa! Now I've never read threesome scenes before but, damn! I've been missing out! Slade, Jenna and Mustang make quite the team! It's page sizzling hot, slow, steady, rough kinda ride. And it doesn't help that theres ma'ams and darlin's thrown in the mix to cause heart palpitations on unsuspecting readers...

I especially loved the end - this story needed a happy ending and it got one.

And - Yes, incase you are wondering I have Bucked and Ride waiting to be read as well now! It doesn't get much better than this!

This was a really good book. This is the first book in a new series for me and this is my first time reading this author. Slade Bower and Mustang Jackson are living the high life on the professional bull-riding circuit. The prize money is big, the bulls are rank and the women are willing. Jenna is a romance writer who has just been told by her agent that her newest book doesn't have what the publishers are looking for. Cowboy romances are what's in right now. She's got six weeks to write a new novel about a Cowboy and being a girl from New York with no experience about cowboys. To top that, she got a review for her last book that said her sex scenes are boring. Boring! All of that and she's about to turn 35. She's going to Tula, OK for a writers' convention, so she's hoping to get some inspiration for her book there. Enter Slade and Mustang, two of the hottest bull-riders on the circuit, both in the competitive standings and in burning up the sheets with a different girl each night. These two like to share, but Slade is becoming disinterested in having a faceless girl at every turn. So, when Mustang spots the sexy Jenna standing out in the crowd, in her turtleneck no less, they knew she was different. As the three embark on a tryst while they are in Tulsa, Jenna gets more than just the idea for her book. Her heart may be on the line. I liked all of these characters. Jenna was smart and sexy, and I liked how she took charge of her sexuality and went after what she wanted. Mustang was sweet he sees the relationship spark between Jenna and Slade, and he tries to be a good friend and steer Slade in the right direction. This book had hot love scenes. I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series.

This was a really hot story right from the beginning. It kept me on the seat of my pants. After I started the book I had to know how it ended. Definitely a hot,hot book!! Love the characters, Slade the dark and mysterious and Mustang the tall, handsome, smooth talking cowboy and Jenna the writer who's quite the fire cracker but is about to have an experience that will break the shell she's been in. A really good book.

This was a fun first-in-series book. Slade was an odd character. He and Mustang were used to just banging chicks and running away, but something about Jenna called to Slade. And he had no idea how to handle it. It's a good thing Mustang was there to keep prodding Slade in the right direction. But I can't believe Slade didn't call Jenna after Tulsa!! He's lucky she'd even talk to him or Mustang after that. Chase also helped quite a bit in this one, although I don't think he did it on purpose. First, his flirtation with Jenna sort of pushed Slade's intentions to the forefront. Then Chase tells Jenna that Mustang and Slade don't have cell phones. I think he's going to be a sweet one. And I think it's going to be great to see Mustang fall because you KNOW he's gonna fall hard. He may like sex with many different women, but he also has a heart of gold that will be great for some special woman someday.

I look forward to reading the next one!

Unridden

I don’t normally read cowboy books so wasn’t sure what to expect, that said I struggled with a number of things about this story.

The sex was so-so, probably because I didn't really care about the characters. I found it hard to believe that a guy in his 20’s had to show a 35 year old female, where her g-spot was, and by the way she didn’t even realise she had one.

Then I had to deal with the lame names (Slade, Mustang, Brani, Candy) and as if they weren’t enough the author had to top it off by revealing Mustangs real name was Michael Jackson! Was this an attempt at humor, maybe??

The back story about being a writer didn’t hold my interest, and the ending was just plain off IMO.

This book wasn’t all bad, I just think maybe Western are not my thing.

I really enjoyed this book. UnRiddens main character Jenna was a writer who after having her manuscript turned down was told that a "cowboy" novel would be her best chance at selling. Ironically she was scheduled to go to a romance convention in Tulsa where it just so happened that a Bull riding competition was being held. She ended up scrapping her original plan and basing her novel on her interactions with the Bull riders she met.

Slade was a stubborn(no surprise there) bull rider who was getting bored with his current situation of sharing any willing female every weekend with his best friend Mustang(not named so because of the car!). Both men were extremely entertaining and the banter exchanged between the two was so much fun. Mustang sees the connection between Slade and Jenna long before either of them recognize it. The question is whether or not the menage-a-trios will work or whether a choice has to be made and everyone is willing to make it.

The heroine was pretty much slutty. I didnt like her. Slade was a pansy ass. Even after Slade made it known it would bother him if she slept with another she wants to do it anyway. Thats not love, thats lust. This author ends all her books so sudden. Like she is too lazy to give a couple more pages once they get together. I have read alot of her books and this one just disgusted me. I did'nt feel any kind of chemistry between Slade and Jenna. It seemed to me she was hot for Mustang, cause why would she let him fuck her up the ass with a big huge dick. Maybe cause I just dont care for this type of book. I dont care for whores in my books. It's not that I'm a prude or anything cause the anal doesn't bother me. The way she was acting if Chase brought her home that night she would of screwed him also in my opinion. Now if Slade and Mustang got together that would of been HOT..

A fun book that has a clueless New York romance novelist discovering the culture, fun, dust, excitement and men of the rodeo circuit. Needing to write a new kind of romance novel, Jenna Block travels to Oklahoma to interview, meet, and perhaps get friendly with some who are a part of this lifestyle and who are competitors in the circuit. She gets that and more. These's lots of fun in this book and it is an interesting journey of discovery for Jenna. Not a heavy book, by any means, but I enjoyed it immensely.

Boy do I love me these bull ridin' cowboys! Slade and Mustang are the perfect duo! Although I am happier with the way the book ended with Slade getting the girl! I mean if Slade and Mustang both ended up with Jenna we would have been cut short of Mustang's story in the next Studs and Spurs installment which is perfectly titled ... 'Bucked' and will soon be devoured because I just can't get enough of these delectable cowboys!

I liked this story (rated 3.5 stars-upgraded to 4) but I didn't love it. It had the potential for a really good story but I felt it jumped to the ending too quickly. Writer who isn't writing bestsellers goes to a conference and decides to attend a bull riding competition to see if she can write a different genre that people would like to read. Enter 2 hot cowboys. The sex scenes in the book are good.

Um...It wasn't a bad story. But it wasn't really good either. The purpose of the story is an author, writing a romance novel, talks to two bull riders to make it more realistic and she falls in love with one. Where did Slade and Jenna fall in love? While they were busy having sex? Or when she watched them ride? Or how about when they had drinks and talked about her book? Dropped the ball on that... And the whole thing moved so slow for me.

Well Hello Sexy Cowboys, I am still sitting here fantasizing about these hot cowboys who know what to do and what to say. What is it about a hot man who tips his hat and says "hello Ma'am" or "Hello Darlin"? All I can say about UnRidden is holy hotness!!! This book had it all for me, great story, well balanced characters, smut, and sexy chap wearing cowboys ready for a good time.

I do have to mention that I have read other books by Johnson but for me personally this one seemed to fall short of what I would expect to read by this author... Does that mean I hated it, not really...

Expectant storyline with a few surprising elements... Overall it was an ok story with great heated steamy scenes... I will continue on to see what happens in the next book.

My first cat johnson. I'm going back for another round. Can't wait to read the story for chase.
The sex scenes were hot as lit dynamite. The characters were funny and believable.

If you haven't read cat Johnson, take her for a ride.

After buying and starting four books this weekend, I finally found my page turner. It wasn't a page turner because of some twist, for me it was because of the writing, I had to know how it ended. There is no angst, no mind fucking just a sweet and sexy story about two people falling in love and 3 people getting it on. :)

What a great, fun and erotic read. My husband is an ex bull rider and I found the two bull riders, Mustang and Slade to be hot sexy cowboy's. I love the fact that Jenna was in her mid thirties, researching a book that she is writing on bull rider's and went out on a limb becoming involved with these two cowboy's. Great story and very smokin' hot!

Romance author from New York seeking some book details ends up in a menage w/ a couple of hot and younger bull riders. Surprisingly good, fresh, and touching, considering the plot has been trotted around before.

This MFM/MF mixes romance with bull riding competitions, often scoring a guilty pleasure or two with plenty of ménage scenes to please erotica fans. But the combination of shallow sex, cheesy dialogue, no conflict, and absence of anything insightful is a bit too lowbrow for my tastes.

Loved It

Jenna was a romance writer who needed a new story line to sell books. Slade and Mustang were bull riders. They enjoyed their buckle bunnies but Slade was getting bored until he me Jenna. She was in Tulsa for a romance writers convention, they were their for a competition. They and talk the first night. Slade is hooked, but won't admit it. But the rest of the time the three hookup both for fun and her book. But she's fallen for Slade. They don't see other again until the guys come to NY City. Then Slade and Jenna see where things go.

Not my cup of tea. Contains several pet hates - a woman in her 30s moaning about being fat and past it, #NoHomo in a threesome, - and a couple of irritants (if your agent wants you to write 60k words in 6 weeks in a new genre I think it's time for a new agent; a single 35 year old being able to support herself on a not-particularly-good novel a year in New York without a day job; a best friend who seems really unpleasant). I liked Mustang though.

UNRIDDEN is a steamy, sexy and fun read that made me want to look into going to some bull-riding competitions. It was a great read-comical, sexy and just plain fun. It's the first book in the Studs and Spurs series, and whew, what at great start! This book got me drawn into the world that Cat Johnson created, so that there is no chance that I could even imagine not continuing with the series.

Jenna is a romance writer who has just been told by her agent that her newest book doesn't have what the publishers are looking for. Cowboy romances are what's in right now. She's got six weeks to write a new novel about a Cowboy and being a suburban girl from New York has given her no experience in that area. To top that, she got a review for her last book that said her sex scenes are boring. Boring! All that AND she's about to turn 35. Luckily, she's going to Tula, OK for a writers' convention, so she's hoping to get some inspiration for her book there.

The character of Jenna was smart and sexy, and I liked how she took charge of her sexuality and went after what she wanted. No excuses, she wanted the men, so that's what she did. Mustang was such a sweetheart in this. He sees the relationship spark between Jenna and Slade, and he tries to be a good friend and steer Slade in the right direction--even when it feels like he's dragging him there. Slade is wonderfully sexy and brooding. He's not happy about having the feelings that he has for Jenna and makes some mistakes because of that.

The love scenes are erotic but not overly graphic. I think that the author left some things up to the imagination of the reader, and I actually liked that better for this book. It wasn't very long (only about 100 pages), so I'm glad that the majority of the pages weren't taken up in the extremely graphic details of menage sex.

The world-building was great. I learned a lot about bull-riding. Under the guise of Jenna learning for her book, the author really educated the readers as well as drew them into this world of bucking bulls and tough cowboys. We also got a look into the world of romance writing. From the convention to the interactions with Jenna's agent, those glimpses into Jenna's life added to the realism of the book.

Then there were just scenes that were funny: Jenna's reaction to a review that she was reading while in the airport, her original description of how she was going to write a cowboy book (she'll have him just ride a horse a lot, HA!), and Jenna going out with a group of her writer friends to the bar in Tulsa. Those were just a few of the moments in the book that had me chuckling to myself.

My only complaint about the book is that I wanted a bit more development in Jenna and Slade's relationship. I know that there was an instant attraction, but things seemed a little rushed at the end when they decide to be together. I just wanted to see more of them being together outside of bed before they thought that it was love. However, I do believe that the way that Mustang "bowed out" of the menage was done very well. I usually don't like books where all three people don't end up going on to happily ever after, especially when they came together from the beginning as a threesome. But the way the author wrote the scenario, the reader gets the sense that this is the way that it should be. I really enjoyed going on this journey with Jenna, Slade and Mustang. I look forward to continuing the series.
