Shel Pink believes that to lead both a pleasurable and purposeful life, one must slow down enough to be observant, mindful and actionable. The culmination of this philosophy and Shel’s decades long holistic lifestyle, led her in 2004 to found SpaRitual – a pioneering, sustainable beauty brand based on the rituals of selfcare.

As a child, many years before holistic lifestyles became mainstream, an organic diet, the importance of regular massage, alternative healing methods and the minimization of toxin exposure within our environment, were instilled by Shel’s mother. It had always been a way of life, so embracing yoga, meditation and Ayurveda during her college years, was a natural extension of the principles which grounded and shaped Shel’s thinking.

SpaRitual’s guiding ethos is Slow Beauty - turn away from the frenzy of a fast-paced lifestyle to embrace meaningful care for ourselves and others, with the mantra – “Slow Beauty for a Fast World.” Shel’s insight and forward-thinking approach identified the greatest commodity for women in today’s world – time – and the company has built a legacy based on this concept. SpaRitual has incorporated Slow Beauty Rituals – as ways to reclaim and rejuvenate mind body and spirit - into women’s daily beauty practices (#ritualnotroutine).

While SpaRitual is committed to developing multi-purpose, eco-friendly products, using vegan, certified organic and fair trade ingredients from around the world, Shel wants to advance the “green movement” further, where clean formulas are a given, and women can focus on beauty as a holistic connection to oneself and the environment.

As an industry expert and innovator, Shel’s advice and insight are sought as a keynote speaker with past contributions to Go Green Expo, Pharmaca, HBA Panel on Future Trends in Beauty, Organic Spa Wellness Around the Globe Travel and Beauty Symposium and Serious Business, among others. Shel has also been featured as a green beauty authority in many media outlets, including The Los Angeles Times and The Huffington Post.

She launched the blog slowbeauty.com in 2012 as a digital platform to champion the slow beauty movement, and provide the tools and guidance to live a balanced and renewed existence. Shel currently resides in Los Angeles with her husband Ran and their two children, Alexander and Olivia and their Weimaraner, Baron.

* This was a pretty interesting book, but I feel like it had way too many information to properly process and that brought a sense of heaviness to the book. It needed to be much lighter, especially with such books to attract more readers you have to find a way to not make your audiance feel bored . Yet it is a very beneficial and educational book, I felt like I'm reading the author too, she definitely put at least to my assumption a huge effort.
*So here's the thing it isn't a book to read in 3 days or a week "slow beauty" through my experience needs to be read slowly. And that's where I went wrong. Will I re-read it again? It's not my cup of tea. I highlighted what I thought was beneficial and interesting and found that I don't really need a second read.
* I should add though, this book might be a great deal of a help for some people. Give it ago, and judge for yourself.

I'll be honest, I mostly skimmed this. But I plan to come back to it when I'm ready to actually begin these rituals myself. I am trying to find a self-care practice that helps me tame the anxiety beast. Some of the suggestions in this book were promising. Others I didn't much relate to. I will say though that the attitude toward beauty and the bits of ourselves that need fixing was refreshingly not focused on perfecting my body.

I thought some of it was a little over the top and a bit wordy in some areas, but I have adopted many of the rituals and recipes described in the book such as the oil massages, teas, smoothies, yoga, and first light, among other things and this book helped me to really shape my day and set goals for myself in the new year with a big focus on self care. I would say it is definitely worth the read, but not necessarily word for word.

We could all use a beauty book that talks about actual beauty. What do I mean? I mean inner beauty through:
1. A personal philosophy
2. Rituals
3. Recipes
4. Mapping your journey

I picked up a few fun tips like the health benefits of parsley and the best way to scrub when exfoliating.

Not a bad book, just stuff I had already seen other places. Would be a great book for someone just getting into rituals!

Did not finish this. It isn't for me. Too much of a mishmash of spiritual and cultural things that don't click for me. Some of the messages for self care are ok.

Mostly, a mish-mash of mumbo-jumbo.

The first two sections were solid and inspiring. The last sections were overwhelming and way too crammed with information and muddled her message. All in all, it was a beautifully photographed book. The recipes were simple and healthy. The rituals she describes and the volunteering/art she encouraged for consumption are inexpensive and would help with slowing down and being healthier.
