Calder made mistakes he would pay for, though he didn't think it would be with his life. He quickly learned that everything he believed about dying wasn't true, after all. Somewhere between love and death, there is another place...
Michael Bussa grew up in Schiller Park, IL, a small suburb of Chicago. Having an inordinate love of aviation, as a child, he always believed he would grow up to become a pilot. "I was always fascinated with the idea that something that large could leave the ground so gracefully, and stay in the air," he says. "I mean, if I jumped off a cliff with my arms spread like a bird, I'd plummet to my death!"
His earliest work was a short story, written in the third grade, entitled, "Cars Can go One Hundred and Twenty." It was a hit with teachers and students, alike, and Michael was hooked on penning for entertainment. As an adult, he has found his niche writing short stories -- he writes them in a twisted way that would make even Hitchcock take notice!
Story set up, characters introduced, reader hooked in, tension created through strong narrative and dialogue, breathtakingly strong images portrayed, story builds, twist landed and boom. A masterclass in how to present a 20 minute story, by Michael Bussa.
This short story is focused around five characters, their somewhat dysfunctional relationships and, well, grisly death at sea and afterlife. The most disturbing dialogue, for me, being between mother and son in the preface, as if any mother behaves and talks to her child in such a nasty way, never mind topping herself in front of him, that child is sure to grow up with some psychological problems. No more detail about the story is needed as that will spoil it. It's good and it's scary.
With such a great premise, in honesty, I'd have preferred more story build up. Still a short story so it kept it's punch but perhaps 45/50 minutes to allow characters to develop a little. But that's me being picky and I really like the author's style so want more!
The narrator of the audiobook is brilliant mostly, making characters distinct, helping capture and portray the mood/tone. At times he oddly sounds quite stilted in his reading, over pronouncing words like he's reading to a child, which was off putting. Then moving back into being brilliant again. Anyway a really good, solid 4 on story and narration and a recommendation from me.
I received a review copy of this story from the author via audiobook.boom. I do not personally know the author and have provided an honest review.
What a fun, quick listen! The author gave me the audible of this 20 min short story and I liked it from beginning to end. It totally reminded me of the 80s movie Creepshow!!
I received this for free in return for an honest review.
For such a short story this is an intense and wonderful story. Remy has lost Calder. Now she is confused and dreading the memory of him, or is it just a memory? This story has a great twisted ending that delves into the supernatural and looks at what could only be called Karma, when Gates, a man who isn't the nicest of people gets paid back for his shifty dealings. I think the author did a terrific job with this story. Short stories are hard to write and make the few pages feel like a long story, the author has done that and more.

Interesting ghost story but I felt it was a bit too short. There is no back story on the characters, so you really don't get to know them well enough to care about the characters. Interesting twist at the end!
I really enjoyed this supernatural tale of love and death.Narration by Jim Graves was good.I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.
