Poetry Layered in Old World Charm

Having embedded myself deeply within the poetic layers of ‘Sediments,’ the collection bequeaths a signature impression of Old World Charm through the grain of its lyrics and the setting for many of its lengthy poems, epic in nature. One senses Lord Byron planted in the poet’s soul as she passionately raises the issue of oppression—be it class warfare and societal hypocrisy, human rights, or the individual’s struggle to overcome adversity. Probing further into the sedimentation, Shanti rails against greed, arrogance, callousness, and any form of discrimination.

To The Slave

Angels, peasants, kings and queens!
Ironic slaves, aren't you all?
(Inside palaces and outside gutters)

While much of the poet’s social consciousness emanates from her poetry, her vulnerabilities also emerge. She bares her soul in “All This Longing” from whence I surmise she pivots from to pen the others.

…and all this longing and all
these dreams. quench me! bathe me! please give me hope!
just saturate me in warmth,
and i'll fly to it like sunlight through the
clouds!

I highly recommend ‘Sediments’ for its unconventional collection of poetry whose passionate pleas are layered in Old World Charm and beseech us to “Realize the immoral methods of social morality.” (Faith)

A definite must for lovers of contemporary poetry.

Shanti’s poetry is rich and sensory, full of imagery that draws the reader into the emotion and wellsprings of the poet’s mind.

Drawing on mythological themes and elements of Biblical allegory, although it is by no means religious poetry, Shanti explores her place in time, relationships, and the universe through themes of belonging, human vulnerability, equality, and home. She is a master of contrast and balance, weighing sensitivity against images of those things that overwhelm, and confidence in belonging despite her humility, framed within a very real sense of awareness of the immeasurable breadth and depth of the universe.

Among the many brilliant poems in this collection, my favourites are 'Key of E' and 'Testament'.

An exhibition of the extent and versatility of the talent of this wonderful poet and author, 'Sediments' is a definite must for lovers of contemporary poetry.

A wonderful collection of poetry. I love the authors style of writing and the mythological themes used. She can range from an epic story that is passionate and intense to romantic and soft in the next poem. Shanti's poems are thought provoking and they speak about social morality, injustice and love. I especially enjoyed her beautiful love poetry which I hope to read more of ! My favorites being Key of E, Equal, and Where The Wild Roses Grow.
