凱特、麥可、艾瑪做夢也沒想到，皮姆博士將他們送回環境惡劣的孤兒院「愛倫坡之家」。他們原本以為能夠平安無事地生活，但好景不常，尖叫鬼又找上門。為了保護其他院童不受傷害，凱特使用《時空之書》將尖叫鬼帶走，自己卻回到1899年的紐約，魔法世界將與正常世界分離的前夕。
麥可與艾瑪則在千鈞一髮之際，被皮姆博士救出，來到魔法師雨果的地盤。雨果告訴他們在一封古老的信件上，寫著幾千年前，有一支守衛團從埃及帶走另外一本創始之書——《生命之書》——並將它藏在祕密地點，等待守護者出現。
根據雨果的線索，皮姆博士帶著麥可、艾瑪找到畫有守衛團符號的墓室。墓室裡沒有文字或地圖，只有一副骷髏和裝有不知成分飲料的陶罐、玻璃瓶、金屬瓶。
這三瓶飲料跟《生命之書》有什麼關連？是誰派尖叫鬼來抓三姊弟？向來形影不離的三姊弟還有機會團聚嗎？
