Good, but not great

I so enjoy Shelly Smith’s books, despite their age. Mixed feelings about this one. Didn’t like the first couple of chapters and almost gave up. The main character seemed to suddenly morph into someone else. Anyway, it got better, but all in all, the characters weren’t believable and I can’t see how a fling would lead to the events that unfurled. I don’t believe anyone would risk everything for someone they have so little feeling for. They didn’t even have a great sexual connection. So why bother?

I do like the writing style, funny in parts!

Gosh, all her books could do with a good proofread! They’re littered with errors, £ signs and all sorts. There’s also an extremely offensive and racist description of the colour black in this one, which should be taken out. Yes, the books are dated, but whoever is publishing them and earning money from them should deal with those things.

I know that Smith wrote a series of books with a detective and then switched to more psychological “mysteries.” This wasn’t much of a mystery to me. So, am hoping to be able to catch a novel by this author that is one with the detective. Full disclosure- I’m really not into watching people and their neurosis’s and doldrums.

Some really beautiful and insightful writing at times, despite the main character's vast weaknesses and the obviously predictable ending.

The Woman In The Sea by Shelley Smith.
This was a good read. Little slow but I read it. Predictable. 4*.

The ending predictable, but perhaps that's what made you read the entire book.
