Hell Squad soldier Gabe Jackson has lost everything that mattered, including his twin brother. Now he just wants to kill the invading aliens anyway he knows how…and he knows a lot of ways. Previously part of a secret Army super-soldier project, he’s faster, stronger, deadlier…but on the inside, he’s a mass of rage, and pain, and grief—all waiting for a chance to drag him under. Until he finds her.
Dr. Emerson Green had her life planned: thrive in the high-stress environment of the ER, build her career, have a great life. Then the raptor alien invasion happened. Now she’s the head of the medical team for the secret base sheltering human survivors outside of Sydney. She’s also in charge of patching up the soldiers who get too close to raptor claws. She’d never planned for this…and she’d never planned for sexy, brooding Gabe Jackson.
As Emerson uncovers clues to the aliens’ secret plans for the human race, she and Gabe collide in a storm of volatile passion. But the brooding soldier is as stubborn as he is silent, and Emerson knows she must convince him to reach out to her…because Gabe is a ticking time bomb about to go off.
Note to readers: This sci fi romance contains a lot of action (think invading aliens, explosions and gunfights), tough warriors (the sexy, battle-hardened soldiers of Hell Squad) and a steamy romance (lots of sexy times between a warrior woman and a sexy soldier). So if you like it fast, and gritty, and sexy, this is for you!

Hell squad's super soldier and the Doc,spoilers ahead.
Gabe is the mixed race broody, big, badass mostly silent alpha male of the group, since the death of his twin he's been even broodier and taking more risks in the field trying to avenge his twin and also Emerson. He made some errors in judgement because of this. This started off with Emerson and Gabe already hooking up, some steamy scenes included lol he comes to her room they do the do and he leaves. He pushes away quite a bit especially for such a short book but thankfully Emerson had a backbone and gave him what amounted to an ultimatum, he eventually pulled his head out of his ass but ended up pushing away again before he settled his butt down. I liked both characters(I loved that she called him big guy), Emerson wasn't a soldier but she did her best and I was delighted that she had a hand in one eye's demise. Aliens are experimenting on survivors, more rescues, we meet the Berserkers (I'd love to read about them) and see old faces. Surprising news for Cruz and Santha that I absolutely loved. All in all, even with all the pushing away by Gabe and the fact that this was a pretty short read I really enjoyed this one, seems I've got a weakness for the big broody H's. Another win!
It was ok, but not great. Way too much pushing away from Gabe. I failed to feel any real connection between them. You could tell he cared, but he denied it forever and essentially used her. I was most disappointed that she allowed it. Emerson was strong and smart. But she let him treat her like crap.
This may or may not be the third Hell Squad book I've read in the past two days, I'm devouring these like nothing else, neglecting every job I have to do irl.
These books are so weirdly addicting, the best kind of guilty pleasure reads that you can't help but fly through. This book follows Gabe Jackson, the US solider who had been enhanced by the government before the alien invasion changed the world, and he's used to people shying away from his frightening exterior and personality.
But not Doctor Emerson Green, she sees right through him and likes what she sees.
This wasn't my favourite in the series, but it was still extremely entertaining and full of badass men and women. I am freaking in love with this series and I'm not even ashamed, I have five more in the series waiting on my kindle so I'm off to devour those too.
I'm really getting into this series and more than happy that the author is starting to provide more information about the Gazzida (can't help it. everytime I read Gazzida I think Godzilla) and what their end game is.
I really enjoyed this installment for a few reasons. First is that it featured Gabe. Second that it featured Gabe and Emerson. Third, that the author is keeping the characters from past installments in the picture but not overshadowing the featured couple in the existing installments.
The author has also upped the adult content in the romance department. Yummy.
Now if only the good guys can kick some dinosaur ass to turn the tide.....
An excellent read! I was really looking forward to read Gabe's story, and as much as I liked it, I didn't love it as much as the others. And I was Team Gabe right from the beginning! Those strong, silent types? SWOON! I guess I wasn't as into this one. Still good though, love the action -romance!
Every since Gabe lost his twin brother Zeke, he's been emotionally withdrawing from his team and simply focused on revenge. He doesn't know how to handle his attraction to Dr. Emerson Green.
So good...great romance, very steamy, lots of action with a touch of bad ass alpha male thrown in for kicks.
Gabe’s quiet/broody on his best day, but has been worse since his twin Zeke was killed in Book 1. He was genetically altered by a military branch and has special qualities. (faster, stronger, better senses) We’ve had hints that he and Doc Emerson had something going on, and we learn that they’ve been getting in on the DL.
Most of the book focuses on the team working to figure out why the aliens are doing experiments on humans. And Gabe getting over his hang ups to let Emerson in.
Bottom Line- These are pretty short with several action missions, team time, and steam.
J’s Notes- Picked up free within the Hell Squad 1-3 box set. Hell Squad Marcus Steele- Scarred leader, ex-military w/ Elle H.S’s comm’s. Poor Gabe. POOR GABE. Losing his twin did a number on him and he's gone into survival mode where he's determined to take out as many aliens as he can in as short a time as possible. Which is not a great combo, really. Because a vengeful Gabe is reckless and his recklessness puts the team in danger.
And then there's Emerson. He needs her, but he doesn't want to need her. Or maybe he just thinks she deserves better than a genetically modified soldier with a chip on his shoulder.
Not that Emerson is fazed by the genetically modified part. To her, Gabe's just a sexy, intense man who makes her heart beat faster. Unfortunately, he's not much for talking about his feelings, so she has to claw what he's feeling out of him. Even then, he remains frustratingly tight lipped until he realizes exactly what he has to lose by not taking a leap of faith and trusting Emerson by opening up.
A little more of the alien agenda is uncovered, along with a whole lot more questions. Good thing Hell Squad is ready and willing to fight until they can't anymore to try to figure out what the aliens want and how to stop them.
Gabe is the strong, silent one on the Hell Squad who lost his twin brother in the first book. Emerson is the young ER doctor thrust into being the Base's Head Doctor in the fight against the aliens. It's another strong pairing, although I did think Emerson wasn't as fleshed out as Gabe in this book.
It's good to also see the gradual unveiling of the aliens' plans for humans, even if it's all a bit scary.
Not exactly, but close enough. In this third entry in Hackett’s awesome post-apocalyptic SFR Hell Squad series, the invading Gizzida reveal that at least part of their purpose in conquering Earth was to “assimilate” the human race by transforming them into the reptilian Gizzida, and Hell Squad has found the transformation tanks to prove it.
Anyone who doesn’t hear echoes of Star Trek when the transformation system is named “Genesys” isn’t paying enough attention. Not that the Trek homage matters to the plot, but I love it when my new SFR loves reference my old SFR loves.
Your warp speed may vary.
The romance in this entry, after series opener Marcus and Cruz was hinted at during the previous book. Gabe lost his twin brother Zeke in the first book. But he went batshit crazy in the second book when base medico Emerson Green was temporarily captured in their hunt for human prisoners/experimentees/torture victims.
It was pretty obvious at that point that something was going on between the genetically modified warrior and the doc. Even if whatever it was was only in Gabe’s dreams, or Emerson’s nightmares. Or both.
One of the things that has changed since the end of the world as we know it arrived is that casual sex has become the go-to stress reliever for a significant chunk of the population of the secret Blue Mountain base.
One of “Doc” Emerson’s worries is what will happen when everyone’s birth control implants get way past their expiration dates. Whether the last outpost at the end of the human race in the middle of a guerrilla war is or is not the best place to start having a population explosion, Emerson knows its going to happen soon.
Sooner than she thinks, as Cruz’s lover, Santha, becomes the first woman to find herself unexpectedly , but happily, pregnant.
It’s also a personal question for Emerson, as she and Gabe are secretly providing each other with a bulwark against the all-too-frequent nightmares. Just like in the first book, Gabe doesn’t think he’s good enough for Emerson, and doesn’t think a genetically modified warrior like himself is a safe lover for anyone, let alone the well-educated doctor.
A lot of this story is the push-pull between Gabe and Emerson, as they try to work out whether either of them can manage a real relationship. She buries her stress in overwork, and he kills his, over and over, by slaughtering Gizzida. Neither of them is good at talking about their feelings, or sometimes even admitting they have feelings. Or that they can’t stop feeling things about each other, whether it’s a good idea or not.
But while Gabe and Emerson are sorting out their feelings for each other, the Gizzida are laying a trap for both the doctor and the Hell Squad. Their leader thinks that Emerson and the Squad would be perfect additions to their race.
Escape Rating A-: I love this series. It is the perfect blend of romance, action adventure and science fiction worldbuilding. It’s also a great post-apocalyptic series for people who don’t generally like post-apocalyptic stories.
But then I expect no less from this author. Which is why her books are my go-tos when my schedule goes FUBAR as it did this week. It’s not that I didn’t want to read the book I originally scheduled, it’s that I knew I couldn’t tackle 672 pages in one night.
Gabe, on the other hand, was an absolute treat. We get to see more of the workings of Blue Mountain base, and we learn chillingly more about the Gizzida’s motives. Which make complete sense from their perspective, while still giving us humans the shivers.
I like it when my villains make sense. Bwahaha is funny but does not a superior foe make.
I also enjoy the way that the romances are not the driving force of the story, but they are a driving force for the characters. Gabe is going berserker because he isn’t dealing with the loss of his twin, and can’t deal with his feelings for Emerson.
Speaking of not dealing with stress, in one of these books I want to see the base commander finally find someone of his own. He needs to have someone he can rely on, and someone who can relieve his mountain of stress!
Emerson is suffering from PTSD after her capture by the Gizzida, and is unwilling to take the time to deal with it. (Doctors make the WORST patients). Gabe and Emerson help each other forget what’s hurting them, and in the process, help each other remember how good it is to be alive and what they have that is worth fighting for.
• Nice addition to the series. • Stands alone. No need to really read the other books in the series to know what’s going on. • Disappointed about how the villain was handled. I would have preferred it handled in a different way. • Nice surprise about the main characters in book 2. [I didn’t read/listen to their story] A possible occurrence that was first brought up in book 1. • Glad to see alfa male Gabe grow after loosing Zeke. • Gabe = closeted romantic. • Interested in learning what the aliens are trying to gain with their experiments. Why? Hope the author doesn’t drop that part of the series plot in future installments simply because the MC’s probably won’t be doctors. A bit of foreshadowing made me think of something and I want to know if I’m right. • Looking forward to finding out more about the invasion. Maybe some info will come from Reed’s woman in the next book, REED. • Emerson = gutsy doctor/strong woman. • Good narrators. Great pace by each though not an over abundance of acting. Loved that the male narrator used accents.
The third book of the series, Gabe continues more or less where the other two left off.
Gabe is alone, after his brother's death and he is taking more risks than usual. He is the best fighter from the Hell Squad because he has enhanced physical abilities. He feels attracted to dr Emerson but because he never had a loving model in his life and doesn't want to give in his attraction and feelings. Dr Emerson is attracted to Gabe and every time he comes to her room she wishes for more. Eventually when the aliens kidnap Dr Emerson Gabe must face his feelings and save her.
The story was nice, I like to plot that allowed these books to be build around. The survivors discover some of the reasons the aliens have to invade and retaliate. There is enough action and suspense to warrant 3 stars, the romance is sweet and built fast but:
- there's just not a lot new information here - Gabe and Emerson follow exactly the same script; attraction-love-little angst-HEA - there is not much background build around the story. - there is no mention about Gabe's abilities or what was done to him. Just said. - even the sexy scenes feel like the follow the scrip of the previous two books
For me is difficult to rate more than three stars to the story because I feel that the author has enough skills and ideas to make the book better. While others are happy to read a short story I want more specially when I like the plot. I will pick up all the other books because I want to know where this is going.
GABE, BOOK 3 in Anna Hackett’s dystopian Hell Squad series. Although I have read other Hackett novels, this is my first time reading this series.
MY RATING GUIDE: 3.5 I ENJOYED THIS. 1= dnf/What was that?; 2= Nope, not for me; 3= This was okay/cute; 3.5= I enjoyed it; 4= I liked it a lot; 5= I Loved it, it was great! (I seldom give 5 Stars).
GABE~ Blue Mt location GABE picks up a week or so after the previous book (1yr+ after the raptor Aliens invaded earth). MMC Gabe Jackson is a former Coalition Marine, a soldier from their Super-Soldier program. Following the alien’s invasion of earth, Gabe joined the Sydney resistance movement as a member of Squad 6, known as Hell Squad. Hell Squad is one of the combined-military squads planning and undertaking missions to eliminate aliens in the Sydney area. (Gabe’s twin brother Zeke, also a former Coalition Marine and a member Hell Squad was killed in a alien attack in bk #1). FMC Dr Emerson Green, once one of Sydney hospital’s head ER doctors before the attacks, has since been dedicating her skills, energy and brains toward the treatment of civilian survivors (who continue to dribble into Blue Mountains secret military base from “the ruins”), injured military men and women actively fighting the aliens, and any human survivors rescued from newly discovered horrible experimental labs.
Comments ~ 1) Standalone? The HELL SQUAD series has an overall story arc that stretches across the 20 titles. Any book can be read as a standalone title (with a conflict, resolution and a HEA) but the connections between the characters and the sub plots to the final ending would be missed. 2) I have generally enjoyed Anna Hackett’s Action Adventure stories. They are fast moving with crazy monsters/antagonists, unique settings/plots and kick-butt main characters. The tone generally remains positive and hopeful - although the challenges and obstacles in this Dystopian world appear nearly limitless, making the tone quite a bit darker than her other series. 3) I am just now beginning to recognize a similarity of character types and obstacles from series to series, and a similarity of story arcs as well in Anna’s novels. But overall, I still enjoy slipping into her world of fiction where the Good Guys always kick serious butt and the Bad Guys EVENTUALLY lose (each individual title ending with a HEA even as the overall story arc remains unresolved or not entirely victorious, especially in these dystopian books). 4) I purchased and listened to the audio version read by Samantha Cook and Jeffrey Kafer. They both did a nice job. 5) I purchased this entire series on a recent sale and look forward to working my way through them although the intimacy scenes (with an early onset in GABE) are a bit over the top for me.
READER CAUTION ~ PROFANITY - Yes. Strong language is used rather frequently. SEXUAL SITUATIONS - Yes. Detailed intimacy occurs rather quickly in the book. VIOLENCE - Yes. This is a dystopian novel dealing with survivors battling numerous Alien invaders who are focused on capturing, torturing, devouring and killing humans.
The HELL SQUAD SERIES is an amazing sci-fi romance. Earth has been invaded by horrible ALIEN creatures called the Gizzida intent on making a “destroyed” Earth theirs. There are pockets of resistance across the planet, humans willing to fight to the death to save mankind, to save Earth. Hell Squad takes place in Australia, starting in Sydney. Luckily this hidden base has a group of survivors from many walks of life and a lot of these wonderful characters will have their own story in this 20-book series. I AM RE-READING THE ENTIRE SERIES and it’s even better the second time around. BK 3 GABE—He’s a giant of a warrior who is also more than normal. He was “enhanced” in a military lab before the invasion, thank God, because he can kick some serious alien butt without breaking a sweat. Gabe is in love with super-smart Doctor Emerson Green. The aliens are increasing their evil takeover. They are keeping humans alive now to “change” them. The war is escalating. The Blue Mountain hidden base is putting everything they have into fighting the aliens and keeping humans, human. In all the chaos Gabe and Emerson fall in love. Wonderful story of hope and compassion. I love this series. Great cast of characters. Linda
Love this series facing adversity in times of hardship, humanity saving our existence against alien invaders. Each of Hell Squad ream member us strong in their action to fight, push on to find a way back to eat they had.
Gabe a super enhanced soldier who lost his twin brother Zeke ,he struggling emotionally with his loss but doesn't want to talk with his colleagues about feelings Dr Emerson Jackson, the sole Dr at base has seen his pain, but he secretly goes to her room at night to ease his pain through her body. Not ideal way to cope with grief, but they both accept it.
Gabe misses his brother dearly as he grew up without love from his parents, zeke being his twin, his sole reliant companion, and a reliable friend. They find survivers and work out what aliens are doing, changing humans into Gizzida. Humanity will prevail with Hell Squad in charge!
Gabe Jackson had been different since whatever changes army doctors did, but since his twin was killed by raptors, he’s had an even harder time socializing with his fellow base-mates. Gabe connected with Dr. Emerson Green but she didn’t know because their relationship was physical and he wouldn’t talk to her either.
That changed and became evident to everyone when Gabe refused orders and it took the entire squad to calm him down so they could rescue her when Emerson was taken by raptors. It became base knowledge when Doc’s attacked by a human they’d rescued from the lab. Gabe killed him with his bare hands and insisted on tending her.
Meanwhile, Gabe is still wild but tamer as his grief eases. A human was lost but the attack answered questions and left Doc with clues to why there were raptor labs and a better way to search for them. Following the clues, a lab is found but it’s a trap and the raptors target Emerson and she hears shocking truths. Rating: 4.25stars
Gabe is a fascinating character. Not sure if I liked him but he was perfect for His Doc. This book was definitely more dark then the others. The main characters had many issues to deal with to progress in their relationship.
One thing I that is jarring in the story, and left out (in my opinion should have left the stadium scene out and added more info.) was the other survivors of the experiments. She went from warning the base brass about the irregular readings to not mentioning them. Just the professor/doctor behavior alone would have warranted mandatory checks.
Hell Squad book 3. A great read. It would be better if you read the first two books so you can better understand these characters and situations, but you don't have too. This book is written well. Gabe a super soldier and Dr. Emerson. They even each other out. In a world with no guarantees of tomorrow, they fall for each other. He makes her feel safe and loved. She makes him feel peace, loved and helps him heal from the loss of his brother. They battle the alien factors and crazy emotions. This book is an emotional roller coaster with extra drama, angst, suspense and smexiness.
Gabe Jackson still hasn't quite recovered from the loss of his twin brother and with his enhanced abilities Hell Squad counts on him to be focused on the mission. Now the aliens are taking people and experimenting on them trying to merge their DNA with theirs. With the location of their labs can the squad rescue them or will it be too late?
Dr. Emerson Green knows what it's like to be taken by the alien raptors and she's determined to help any of the people from the lab if she can. But when things get hot Gabe starts taking risks so Emerson steps in and lets him know that if they are to survive they must work together. But what is the end goal of the aliens who now has terrorized Sydney for 3 years? Can the teams stop them?
I barely got started on this book before I DNFed it. It would be fair to say that I didn’t give this book and these MCs a chance to win me over and I’m sad since I liked the glimpses I saw of them in book 2 but I hate starting a book when the MCs have already had sex with each other. It feels like I’m jumping in somewhere in the middle of a romance book and missed out. I didn’t like the first on-page sex scene (occurred within the first 25mins of the audiobook) and feel no drive to listen any further.
In the 3rd book of the Hell Squad series, the main characters are squad member Gabe and the base doctor Emerson. They are both reeling from past events, Gabe lost his twin brother and Emerson was a prisoner of the raptors for a short while. Their relationship builds as the work to discover what it is the aliens are doing with the captured humans. Once they discover that humans are being converted to raptors they now have to figure out what they can do to stop it.

I am so obsessed with this author. She’s amazing. The storylines just keep getting more exciting. It’s like a never ending line of excitement. She’s so incredibly descriptive that you can picture the characters and aliens in perfect detail. Emerson is my favorite lady to date. And I LOVE GABE! I have been so on edge for his story and it did not disappoint. I hated to lose Zeke but I love Reed and I’m going to jump head first in his story.
I loved this one in the series. The first installment and this one are my favorite! Something about Gabe and him finding a woman is everything. He lost his twin brother and is basically just going thru life. The more danger the better. Him and Emerson start off on an intimate start. But she wants more, but he doesn't feel like he deserves her. I loved she made him work for it. Loved the action and suspense. Can't wait for Reeds book!
This was my favorite book in the series so far. I think that is largely due to the character development that has occurred since book 1. Which, isn't really fair to book 1 or 2, but oh well, someone has to go first. Also, I like the strong silent type every now and then and Gabe delivered on that in a big way. Emerson and Gabe were good together, this book had some sexy moments. I just wish they were a smidge longer so the couple that is the focus of each book has a chance to develop more.
I started this right after Cruz, it was teased so well and broody Gabe was adorable in a scary way, it was nice to see him get his happy ending with Emerson (ha! I remembered her name). I really liked how this book developed the world and some extremely eerie threats are revealed, and the seeds for future books are planted perfectly. Seriously though... Book SEVEN for Claudia and Shaw? Seriously?!
