It is said that when war threatens the world, one individual will be selected by prophecy to lead the Shadow Warriors out of the Land of Mist and reclaim the freedom which has been stolen.
Shanti has grown up under the constant threat of war. Since she helped her people defeat a raiding party by using a special power, she’s been a hunted woman. Carrying rare abilities and an uncanny fighting aptitude, Shanti is the only hope of salvation for her people. The problem is, she doesn’t believe in her own divinity, and when she flounders, she nearly fails in the duty hanging so heavy on her shoulders.
It seems like any other day when Sanders and his band of misfit boys find a foreign woman clinging to life in the wastelands. Oblivious to the weapon they now have in their possession, they are content to harbor the mysterious woman until she is well enough to continue her journey.
But when the war spreads its arms and lands on her borrowed doorstep, Shanti has no choice but to reveal her secrets, plunging her saviors into danger. If they band with her, they will face certain death. But to trade her to Xandre, the warlord desperate to add her to his war machine, would be to give up their entire way of life.
With a new Chosen coming forward, Shanti has lost sight of her duty. With her plans unraveling, she does the only thing she can think of– frees her brother and a mysterious stranger from a Graygual camp before heading back to beg for Cayan’s aid.
Unfortunately, that stranger was precious to the enemy, guarded by one of the elite. A Superior Officer known as the Hunter, this man always catches his prey, and his focus is now on the elusive, violet-eyed girl and the man she ripped from the his hands.
With danger mounting, and one of the best constantly on her heels, Shanti will learn that running will never be enough.
In order to finally claim her title of Chosen and lead the Shadow People out of the Land of Mist, Shanti must make it through a century’s old system to test her battle awareness, her fighting skill, and her ability to stay alive. She’s about to enter The Trials, and she must do it alone.
Separated from Shanti on a dangerous island, Cayan must learn to use his mental skill while keeping his men safe from the people set out to kill them. But as more Inkna and Graygual flood the island, Cayan hears of a sinister force deep in the woods, rigging The Trials and killing any who venture too close.
It is now a race against time. The battle to become the Chosen has begun, and the victor is anything but decided.

Loved the supporting characters just as much as the main
This trilogy has the making of any epic fantasy, but with awesome characterisations and a dose of sexuality, KF Breene has created a world and people as addictive as chocolate. I look forward to delving further into the adventures of our Warriors.
as expected another winner and a wonderful paranormal romance that is so deliciously sinful. K.F. does PNR like no other and I have high expectations that she continually exceeds. I have not read one story that she has written that I have not loved and has not wowed me. I love seeing new worlds coming to life and meeting new characters and with K.F.’s wordsmithing she lets you see every single nook and cranny and vivid life of both. She always writes a story that is so unique and enthralling and so original that you can’t put them down, you have to know what is happening right away. This story is a complete delight in oh so many ways. K.F. builds so much emotions in the story and you always find yourself laughing out loud with the crazy goings on and banter between the characters. But don’t be fooled there is equal amounts of times that you will also need a tissue. Well done girl you always set the bar exceedingly high!
Since I’ve already reviewed the first book in the Warrior Chronicles, “Chosen” if you really want to know my opinions just go to that book on Goodreards. To save you a little time my synopsis is I totally loved that book. I loved the characters and the world K.F. Breene created for them to operate in. I thought the story had a great combination of adventure, and romance with an unusual amount of depth to it. While the world itself sort of had a midievil to 18th century feel to it with houses that had windows and comfortable modern style furnishings while there was no electricity or powered vehicles the language with its expressions was modern. Watching Shanti pick up on the nuances of the language and how and when to use some colorful expressions was a hoot. We learn about Shanti, her past, her mission, watch her form reluctant bonds with the people who rescue her from near death and of course watch the budding relationship between her and The Captain. The Hunted is like many second books in a series in that in many ways it felt like a placeholder or filler between the first book and the third. It’s not a bad story by any means. We’re introduced to a new diabolical killer in the Hunter who is an ambitious upper echelon member of the evil Xandre’s army. We meet a new mysterious character Branson with important powers and we meet Rohann, Shanti’s adoptive brother and her Chance whom she thought was dead. I was a little surprised at how quickly in this story Shanti finds her way back to Cayan and his people. But much of the better part of this story involves her efforts to earn back the trust of those in this kingdom that she left in the middle of the night including Cayan himself. You can feel her pain as she is forced to humble herself to ask forgiveness. I’m no military strategist and I know it was a necessary contrivance to move the series along, but somehow the decision for Shanti and her band of heroes to leave the sheltered walls of the kingdom and run towards the Hunter and his crew to avoid capture just didn’t make strategic sense to me. I also never understood why with Shanti and Cayan's power combined and access to his much larger fighting force than the Hunter had with him, why instead of running from him they didn't just confront and eliminate his threat? The third book in the series The Shadowlands was a great story with IMHO one large disappointment. Throughout the first two books in the series we’re told that Shanti’s sole reason for surviving the attack on her people, her mission, the purpose of her heroic journey was to convince the Shadow people, a mysterious group of people distantly related to Shanti’s to join with her to help her overthrow Xandre’s rule and free the few remaining of her people she saved. The Shadow people are rumored to be a fearful and mystical race of beings. But when we finally meet them we discover that physically they look a lot like Shanti and Rohann given their common genetic roots and that most of them have some level of “The Gift” but none as powerful as Shanti or Cayan. They are sort of a cross between Cayan’s people with their fighting ability with the Inkna’s level of ability to fight with mental warfare. A powerful force but not powerful enough in ability or numbers to destroy Xandre's army. They are also somewhat arrogant and stuck in ancient traditions in regard to identifying The Chosen, while being so convinced of their own military superiority it leads them to nearly having their island over run by the Graygaul. Where I thought we were going to meet a super scary super race of people to ally with Shanti to overthrow Xander's army, we end up with a nation of people who are without Shanti and Cayan’s help even capable of defeating the amassed Grayggaul army on their own doorstep. And whatever happened to the Inkna version of the Chosen who was supposed to be Shanti’s equal in raw mental power if not fighting ability? Maybe he was killed in the final battle and I missed it? Beyond that I found it a highly entertaining story as the group led by Shanti and Cayan must evade the Hunter (again I'm never really certain why they run from him rather than just battle and destroy him), and find safe passage to the island of the Shadow people. Then while Shanit attempts to complete the trials (with Cayan’s help) to become The Chosen so that the Shadow people will assist her we have Sanders and the rest of our intrepid heroes battling the Graygaul and Inka forces outside the walls of the Shadow people’s city. We also see some internal Shadow politics as some of them are drawn to Shanti’s and Cayan’s side doing what they can to assist them in the trials and to also take an active role in battling the Graygaul forces outside the city while others in power insist on following the old ways forcing Shanti and Cayan to spend precious time and risk their lives completing the trials to become The Chosen while trying to remain neutral to the battles erupting outside (and inside) their city between Sanders and his small force of fighters and Xandre’s army. Oh and after two books of being teased about will they or won’t they while Shanti ponders a couple of meaningless physical hookups to scratch an itch, while trying to deny her growing desire for and attraction to Cayan, Shanti and Cayan finally do. Although even after their earth shattering both physical and emotional joining, Shanti still tries to resist her deeper feelings for Cayan for fear of falling in love and losing someone else that she loves. In a bit of role reversal in this story the author allows the man to be the one more in touch with the nuances and feelings in the relationship as he attempts just the right balance of pursuing Shanti’s heart while not being so aggressive as to chase her away. The final battle between the forces of good and evil ends up not really being the final decisive battle which allows this series to continue for three more books. I'm going to read the fourth book The Invasion with the hopes that it doesn't feel like it and the final two weren't just written because the first 3 were so successful the author and her publisher didn't want to end the series and leave money on the table. But a good part of me is skeptical as now that The Chosen's true power has been revealed and used to defeat Xandre's forces, caused him to turn tail and run, (with a ridiculously convenient escape), how does the author realisiticaly put our heroes in a position where they don't have the upper hand and become the pursuers rather than the pursued. For the balance of the series to be successful somehow she has to return Xandre to a position of power and a threat to the world which considering the way his army was left humiliated, broken and scattered in the final battle in this story seems like a rather tall order.

Chosen (The Warrior Chronicles #1) This was a fantastic start of a series. I have read this book twice. I don’t even know where to start with praise. K.F. Breene’s writing is beautiful, funny, descriptive and has a nice flow. She has the ability to transfer the emotions from her characters into the reader. I had moments where I cried and I had moments of uncontrollable laughter. The story starts when a group of soldiers finds Shanti in the wastelands nearly dead from dehydration and starvation. And they bring her to their home place. Then the fun starts. It is absolutely hilarious how K.F. Breene exploits the cultural differences. Some of the dialogues had me in fits of laughter. But this is just part of the appeal. The world itself is slowly becoming more visible and clearer. It is unknown to Shanti, so it is unknown to us. We get more and more information as she is either getting to know the new places or recounts her knowledge of places to the others. And Shanti, she is exactly as she is supposed to be, like all the female characters I like to read, she is strong and kind, but unlike the other female characters, ruthless when necessary. She is very much different than the world she landed in and the people have problems figuring her out because she does not fit within their social norms. This causes all kinds of funny situations. However, the topic is very serious, as there is a war brewing, invaders coming and all the violence that comes as a result. Shanti is a seasoned warrior and the author is not shy in describing the battles in detail. I also have to mention some of the other characters, firstly Captain Cayan who is perfect in every way. I can’t say more without giving spoilers. Then we have Captain Sanders and his band of Cadets. Sanders is a grumpy but loyal and a very interesting character. Cadets, well, you have to get to know them yourself, all I can say is that they are delightful. There are more interesting characters certainly, but pay attention to the few appearances of the town’s doctor. His banter with Shanti is too funny. All in all, a great book worth reading. Hunted (The Warrior Chronicles, #2) Hunted is the second installment in the series and it is as good as the first one. I could not stop and I even read the next one right away. Here we see Shanti experiencing some insecurities and showing her more vulnerable side. She is not proud pf some of her actions and she is correcting her mistakes. Her life is getting more complicated and the relationships in her life more complex. We meet her adopted brother Rohnan who is a very interesting person and adds to the dynamics of the story. We meet some new characters, but the Honour Guard and Sanders are back and we get to know them better. There is a lot of fighting, a lot of running and little less funny banters, but the story is great and non-stop action. I like the character development, development of the world and the more serious tone the story is adopting. Buy the next book right away because these two read like one book. I love the series. I have enjoyed this book immensely, I read the third one and the prequel immediately within 24 hours. Shadow Lands (The Warrior Chronicles #3) This is the third book in the series and it is immediate sequel to the events of the second book. These two actually read like one book. Shanti is regaining her confidence and her purpose. She is amazing, and Captain Cayan is amazing, and Rohan is amazing, and Sanders is amazing. Her honour Guard is very present with an addition of a very interesting young female character Ruisa. This book is about the trials of the Chosen and the upcoming battle with the Xander’s army. We actually briefly meet Xander, the Supreme Being, in this book. We get a closer look at Shanti and Captain Cayan, Sanders, Marc and some of the other characters. In a way this book follows two parallel stories, one inside the trials and the one outside. Although is it constant fighting and struggle, it seems more steady and less crazy than the second book. I have no idea what is going to happen next and I cannot wait to find out. In the meantime I decided to read the sequel before continuing with the story. Warning, it makes no sense without books Invasion (The Warrior Chronicles #4), Siege (The Warrior Chronicles, #5), and Overtaken (The Warrior Chronicles, #6). Novella Forged in Blood (The Warrior Chronicles, #0.5) is optional, as is a bonus Epilogue to Overtaken, but they definitely contribute to the story. It is one of the best series ever and I highly recommend it!
‘Chosen’ book one. Shanti is the last chance for her people, she must travel to her lost relations and get help. With the Shadow People she should be able to get revenge against the Being Supreme. But first she must survive the barren lands, find shelter and food.
Another great book by Ms Breene, very engaging, action packed, and fast paced. Once again this author shows that you can have a strong, independent, kicka** heroine without a love interest to have a successful story.
I was unsure of what to expect going into this series, all I knew was it had a bada** heroine, a determined hero, and fighting against odds storyline. But just knowing that I was intrigued and excited to read it. And I’ll tell you this... I am hooked and I loved each and every moment.
‘Hunted’ book two. With rumours of a man with similar features to Shanti known as “The Ghost”, she follows the leads to a camp where she hopes her lost “chance” and adopted brother Rohnan might be. Rohnan is not the only prisoner she rescues, now a superior officer know as “The Hunter” is after them. They are going to need help to escape him and only one man comes to mind, but will he forgive Shanti for leaving him in the middle of the night.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. So far this series has been fantastic. Fast paced, action-packed, full of mystery, angst and humour. I love how Ms Breene is able to bring such vivid worlds to life with engaging characters. I also enjoyed that even though the characters were in dire situations there was still witty banter between them.
Shanti has been a character full of mystery ever since she was discovered and rescued by Sanders and her Honor Guard. She has been a little shut off and isolated, though she has helped out and opened up a little to the Westland people she still kept very much to herself. But after seeing they way she acts around Rohnan you get to see a very different side to her. She is still the strong, fearless “chosen” warrior but there is a more likeable and softer side.
Getting to see more of Cayan and Sanders was excellent, these men are still just as mysterious and intriguing to get to know. They both put on such strong fronts but they are both big Teddys.
I am loving this series and can not wait to see how things turn out for these characters.
“Shadow Lands” book three With the “Chosen” trials looming ahead, Shanti must make it through the trials in order to come out with the Shadow People’s help in defeating the Supreme Being, Graygual and Inkan.
OMG!!! I have no idea where to start or what to say for this review. If you though the first two books bl*w you mind you are in for one heck of a read with this one. So strap in and get ready for one seriously addictive, fast paced, action packed, heart racing, nail biting ride of your life.
New faces, new troubles, new relationships, new dangers, but same old enemies.
Things are seriously heating up between Shanti and Cayan and the War.
I honestly don’t know what to write in this, there are so many moments that I feel deserve mentioning but i would be doing you some injustice. So all I can do is recommend that if you haven’t already is that you read this series, like right NOW! I promise you will not be disappointed, especially if you like reading about independent, strong willed, witty bada** females and sexy, kicka** alpha males.
I cannot believe such a wonderful author as KF Breene has never been introduced to me before! What a delight! I am 70 years old and have read all genres of books all of my long life. Without a shadow of a doubt, Ms. Breene is one of the finest writers I have ever been blessed to read. I have now read every book she has written. I went on a K.F. Breene reading marathon and sadly the end has come. The hours of reading all her books have been some of the best of my life. Her writing takes me away from real life, and no matter the subject, it engulfs me in worlds I never knew existed. Thank you! Should you ever want to read the very best books written, I promise if you read ANY of K.F. Breene books, you will end up on the same marathon as I did! Happy reading!
I was first introduced to K.F. Breene with an intro to this series inside a boxed set, and I sought this series out from there. To this day, this is still my favorite series of Breene's. She is realistic in a magical world, and writes amazing heroines with epic supporting male characters. The absolute level of sass in Shanti with her young Guards is highly entertaining. There is a great amount of suspense as the team works through improbable odds to overcome a horrible dictator. I really do wish the series never ended. This is a great deal for three books, and I highly recommend this series even if the final ending in book 6 wasn't the ending I would have enjoyed for such a great series.
I have just completed the boxed set of the first 3 books in this series. It's a very slow burn in the romance with the 2 main characters. The group of misfit teenagers that became Shanti's honor guard are funny, human and endearing. Cayan is the male main character. All I can say is I love dimples. There are nonstop events that pull on your heartstrings, make your pulse quicken or make you laugh. I highly recommend this for readers from teen onwards. While at the end of book three there's some love making, it never goes into more than anyone needed to know.
A girl chosen due to her lineage to lead her people to freedom....
K. F. Breene continues to pull into her multiple series and let me rest a while in her tales of magic, ever-changing fights between good and evil, and triumph after sacrifice. Her characters Shanti, Cayan, the lost people, the soldiers, and the resistance fighters continually evolve, making them more interesting, and the stories more alive. When I read a book, I look for one that can stimulate all of my senses with pictures the author has painted. She has created many worlds for me to travel, and I'm happy to oblige her.
I thought Midlife Madness books were a fluke find, then I find Queen Breene has a few series..... Good series with her (and only her) hilarious, mismatched, totally dysfunctional characters, character dynamics and a great storyline written in such a captivating style to keep you hungry for more. Bravo! When I finish a series, I can't wait to dig into another series while I impatiently wait for the next book of the previous. When a story/book makes me laugh out loud while alone in a restaurant, that's a good book!
These books made me cry a lot, but it was a good and cleansing cry. I could relate purely on an emotional level with what Shanti and Cayan went through, trying to have a relationship during a war. The pain of loss and degradation of being tormented in so many ways. I'm an adult survivor of a lot of things; such stressors that... I could relate to these books on a gut level. I haven't been to war, but some things just hit home so very hard. Thank you.

K.F. Beene just got added to my list of authors that do not disappoint. Well written, interesting, and full of action.
Well written series, action packed, and always interesting. Definitely on my following list of top notch authors that do not disappoint. Plots are well thought out and intelligent. Doesn't waste my time over telling a story and adding content that doesn't support her tale. Enough for now I'm off to read the next adventure.
This is an amazing box set to a totally additive series.
I highly recommend this series. It has action, romance, humour, and a great cast of characters you will love. Shanti and Cayan are the two lead hero's and you are rooting for them to succeed against the evil forces trying to conquer their world. So going over to buy the last three books in this series to find out what more dangers they will have to face before they can finally defeat their enemy's.
My word! These books on their WOW, together they are incredibly!! How in the world can one person know to give so much detail unless their being there? I can't give other readers more info without frustrating myself into my normal 'you gotta read this.' Trust me when I say you'll be so much more happier if you did.
I love it even more in a box set since it saves me time. Shanti is strong and fragile, defeated in spirit but hopeful at the same time. I love the characters so much and just getting lost in this world is a treat after a tough week at work. It’s satisfying to see things build and grow, never want it to end!
When a patrol finds a young woman unconscious on their way back from training, they get more than they bargain. Come join Shanti, Cayan and the rest of her new friends on an adventure to save the land from a tyrant; enjoy the humor and action along with learning about themselves and their own destinies.
This is not a series to miss. This three book set would not let me put it down, it is that good. The characters are so alive that they seem to be a friend I’ve known my whole life. K.F. Breene does an awesome job of drawing you in and weaving a tale that you can’t wait to read. Outstanding writing you don’t want to pass up. Happy reading.
The Warrior Chronicles are absolutely my favorite K.F. Breene Series and characters. Shanti and Cayan are amazing by their own rights but in love the supportive roles like the Honor Guard and Sanders. I have read every single thing this author has written and these are my fave, hands down.
Outstanding... Moving and had a difficult time putting it down. I love the detail to the fighting moves. It took me a while to understand why she resisted Cayman for so long. I absolutely love her character and how she cared for others. She never wanted the mantle but she never stopped fighting for her cause.
Fine swashbuckling, great characters, and an inviting storyline. Nicely done nonjudgmental treatment of a wide range of characters, warts and all. Maybe a shave more of “chiseled musculature” than I needed, but if that’s of interest to you, it’s in good supply. Enjoy.
There are few authors that can pull a wide range of emotions from their readers and fewer still that make the reader grow an attachment to not just the main characters but all of them. Just be warned that when you do pick up one of Ms. Breene's books you will be on a wild ride that you won't want end.
I so enjoyed these books, and had a hard time putting them down when i got started. The story line line was good and thankfully great writing. On to the next one happy reading!
Enjoyed the plot and actions. Captivating characters. Good writing. A good blend of humor and actions. Not five stars since the romance was almost none existant until at book 3. Can't wait to read book four. Totally recommend.
I liked the ensemble of characters and the different cultures in the book. It is not out and out hilarious or gripping but a very pleasant swords and mind/sorcery type book.
Very well done. Has left me completely battle weary and yet determined to push on with the next stage in the journey. Ms. Greene has done a fantastic job of drawing the reader into the heart of the story. A series well worth the time!
Amazing read! Lot’s of action were everyone gets a piece of the pie. Epic journeys where you never know what or who is going to pop up to start another battle. On to the next book!
One of the best fantasy series I’ve read in a long time. Excellent characters that stay true to themselves. Almost to the level of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. Look forward to reading rest of series.
I have read other books by KF Breene, and loved them, I didn't know about this series though. It is fantastic!! Reminiscent of Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series. This is a must read!!
