Only Human #3

Of Humans and Monsters

Rate this book
Book three of the Only Human urban fantasy series...

When Aaron finally locates the human who wields light-weapons similar to Kirsten's, her quiet family life is once again disrupted as she's dragged into another fearsome clash of vampires, shapeshifters, and not-so-mythological gods.

Aaron leaves for his honeymoon and she finds herself working side-by-side with the Amakhosi, so it's a good thing the two have figured out how to get along -- though controlling her libido around him was easier when he was an asshole cat.

Several new species show up -- some friendly and others most certainly a fierce enemy -- along with a human assassin who scares the bejeebers out of her despite the fact he's supposed to be on her side.

Kirsten's old enemy Aquila's back, as well as Xaephan and Mordecai. Add in another skirmish with Randall, more gods-of-old, and a fantastic night with a sexy biker, and you'll want to make sure you have plenty of popcorn and batteries for the third installment of the Only Human series!

NOTE: Of Humans and Monsters is book three of the Only Human urban fantasy series and is not a stand-alone. The first book is Only Human, the second is An Unhuman Journey.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Candace Blevins writes urban fantasy, paranormal romance, epic fantasy contemporary BDSM romance, and two kick-ass motorcycle club series. She’s published more than fifty books. Candace lives with her husband of twenty-four years and their two teenaged daughters. The family’s beloved, goofy, retired racing greyhounds are usually at her side as she writes, quietly keeping her company. Or sometimes not so quietly.

Her urban fantasy series, Only Human, gives us a world where weredragons, werewolves, werelions, three different species of vampires, and a variety of other mythological beings exist.

Candace's various paranormal romance series are all sister series to the Only Human series, and give some secondary characters their happily ever after.

Her Dark(ish) Faerie Tale series gives us a close-up and personal look at Queen Mab, and her Dark Underbelly series is, as you’d expect, dark and (if you’re a little twisted) oh-so-yummy.

Her contemporary Safeword series gives us characters who happen to have some extreme kinks. Relationships can be difficult enough without throwing power exchange into the mix, and her books show characters who care enough about each other to fight to make the relationship work. Each couple in the Safeword series gives the reader a different take on the lifestyle.

Are we not all monsters underneath the human skin? The third book in this fantastic series picks up not too long after the second book ended. This book is just as fast paced and filled with more world building, erotic sex and complications. For those who loved how Anita Blake started in LKH's books, this is the series to read. Because Kirsten is so much more. Plus, the erotic sex in this book is so very hawt. This book should not be read as a standalone. Read the series in order for the best experience.

Kirsten is pulling back from the supernatural world because she is a mom and wants to have a normal life. However, whilst she is human, her powers make her "other". No matter how much she wants a "normal" human life, it isn't going to happen because she has caught too many supernatural's attentions. What would be interesting is if a few more strong female supernaturals became interested in Kirsten. Still, it is great to see Kirsten's friends include power female shifters.

I really enjoyed this story more than I thought I would. I have already read the story five times since this review. And then I went back and re-read the first two books again. This series is entertaining, erotic and complex. The world building is fantastic. There are multiple layers and there is a mix of different mythos that keep me thinking and fascinated. The little pieces of information on how powers work in this world are well thought out and make sense to me. For example, in the previous books, chakras are introduced in how Kirsten does what she does. Now, we learn how brains can function faster based on some hand coordination skills learned. It has made me want to pick up juggling. What is intriguing is how the story includes different cultures, religions and people of different ethnic descent.

I love the characters too. Specifically, I admire Kirsten and how she handles alpha males. She can also be blunt when she needs to be. Kirsten feels more real because the inner dialogue that occurs sometimes shows how Kirsten would really like to respond, she acknowledges her feelings and then modifies her response because she is a mature adult. When she's exhausted and tired, it is nice to see her breakdown and not be so perfect. There are many changes for Kirsten to go through and it is surprising that she is still standing at the end. The changes to Kirsten's powers are increasing quickly yet they make sense because it is all an extension of her existing. It is as if her brain power is allowing her to jump to next levels like quantum physics.

The secondary characters in this full cast mean more when one reads the other series that tie in. Nathan, Aaron, Randall, Dawg and a few others mean more to me because I knew them from other stories. It is nice to see how they are portrayed consistently yet a bit differently depending on the different characters' perspective. Randall behaved as expected and in one scene I wanted to slap him hard upside the head. I felt the same as Kirsten. Nathan is really starting to grow on me. I keep hoping for a BDSM scene with him yet I am a bit intimidated because he definitely is a sadist. Dawg featured more than expected in this book and it is so bloody hawt. Two words: Playful Dom. Be still my rapidly beating heart. The erotica in this book is right up my alley and blazing hot. I enjoyed every single lick be it from a tongue or an implement. Finally Kirsten's "special" cherry is POPPED! And boy is this an intense and delicious panty wetting scene. Ms. Blevins is one of the best kinky author and she succeeds in creating an erotic urban fantasy. Who knew urban fantasy could get so kinky?

Whilst reading this book, with so much going on and several subplots occurring at the same time, I started to fret. The book is a nice lengthy one and I am enjoying every minute, but will everything be resolved in this book? I couldn't see it happening as new subplots came to light. At the 50% mark, I was astounded with how much had happened and there was still half the book left. What would happen? Turns out, a lot happens and then it is over. It is an odd feeling when reading a book thinking that it is so long and then when it is over, thinking, how did it finish so fast? This book ends with me wondering what will happen next. Fortunately, I learned this is a series with many books planned to come. I eagerly look forward to every single one. This is my favourite series from Ms. Blevins as I have read each of the three books many times. This urban fantasy is highly recommended to readers who enjoy suspense, good versus evil and evocative erotica.

Just when a reader of this series thinks they have met every kind of supernatural being, wielding every kind of power that fantasy can conjure, a new beastie or three pops up and complicates the ever-tightening ring of suspense that is the power struggle between worlds. Every step, forward or back, is down another rabbit hole that makes a reader rethink where its all leading. And its freaking awesome.

Usually, I become frustrated with the suspense-shuffle in books or series because it reads like filler, but this series and its companion series are uniquely tied to this looming Armageddon, which, by definition I suppose, is monumental in scope. I enjoy guessing where things are going, and I am thrilled when I'm invariably proven wrong because the alternatives presented are just so much more than I could have imagined.

The gang's all here in this book, in a big way, but there new wrenches in the form of amazing characters thrown in the mix. These are combined with well-placed hints of the future if you pick up on them, though from experience I feel compelled to say, don't count on your conclusions! Even Kirsten O'Shea doesn't count on them. And speaking of Kirsten O'Shea, apart from her strength as a character, can I just say?: I'd about sell my soul for this girl's...erm...social life...

...and the next book in the series. I don't sit around waiting for "next books" in many series, but his one? I'm dying to see just how wrong my conclusions were, because its a good bet, I'm not even close!

Candace brings it all to you in her very own style. You get to see bits of her in her writing and she is true to her theme. Her talent is highlighted as she brings the characters and story to life for us.

You will need to read the books before Only Human and An Unhuman Journey, Of Humans and Monsters book 3 of and exciting series.

Kristen has fought some biggies in her life and the fight to keep from losing who she is as well as keep her family as normal as possible Gods, demons and others just wanna a little taste (smile). But she has some heavy hitters on her side that does what they can to help keep her safe.

Kristen gets to learn new stuff and everyone isn’t all that happy about it, Mordecai is adamant about not having Kristen tell her secrets. You know she even bumps head with a powerhouse and things get a bit tense.

We get to meet new people as well as some old revisited which is always fun. Some hot scenes and a lot of detail within the story. Once again Candace shows why she is one of my favorite go to authors. I read and reviewed this book Voluntarily. Enjoy!

Kirsten is a single-mom, psychologist by day and light-weapon wielding bad-ass by night. This series goes beyond genre-mashup to include MC, PNR, and BDSM with a bit more S&M than I find comfortable. That said, the 3rd in the series is as good or better than the first two with a tight, action packed plot, villains in need of destroying, a enough magic to take the action to exciting levels. Kirsten is becoming more interesting with each volume, as are the cast of characters around her.

4.5 stars round to five because -- single mom.

Have you read Only Human and An Unhuman Journey? NO? STOP! Go read them and then come back and read this entry into the series. Kirsten makes new friends and new enemies in this entry in the series. We also catch up with some old friends and old enemies. We learn more about Kirsten and as she becomes stronger we have to question is she human or one of the monsters? Of course there are human monsters out there too. This is a non-stop express high energy addition to the series and I can’t wait to see where Kirsten’s journey takes us next.

I love it when I get the answers to big questions in an ongoing series. The only problem is sometimes those answers bring on more questions. The clues are starting to add up and the more we learn, the more fascinating this series is getting. Even with the new information, the jury is still out on whether Kirsten is actually human.

If you are looking for a sweet romance with an HEA, this is not the book or series for you. Kirsten’s series is firmly in the Urban Fantasy genre and not romance, but that doesn’t mean it’s not hot as hell at times (literally and figuratively!). There are some extremely erotic scenes included that are sometimes heavy on the BDSM.

Old and new enemies reared their heads in this installment. Aquilas is still around (would someone please permanently remove that asshat’s heart please!). The plot is getting thicker and thicker and Kirsten is facing more than she can handle every time she turns her head.

Of Humans and Monsters was full of action, mystery, suspense, and several seriously sexy scenes with some very hot alpha men. Kirsten is a kickass heroine who gets better with each book. She navigates a supernatural world full of politics, crazy rules and did I mention the alpha men? Knowing the bad guys are gearing up for war, she’s doing everything possible to gain strength and skills. Her intelligence, loyalty, and willingness to give her all at the same time trying to be a good mother to her adopted daughter are just a few of the things I love about her.

We seem to get quality time with lots of different characters from Ms. Blevins other series, especially ones from the Chattanooga Supernaturals. One who shows up often is Nathan. I’m hoping against hope that someday he will get his woman, despite a situation that dictates he never will.

A bonus was time spent with Dawg from the Rolling Thunder MC series. He is one sexy puppy and it made me a happy, happy girl that he was able to relieve so much of Kirsten’s tension. The chemistry between them was combustible and the fact he was a playful Dom was just… yummy.

A couple of new players are introduced that I am dying to get to know better. Ryan, OMG! Dark, mysterious, alpha to his core and from the looks of things, very broken. Everything about him was catnip to me. We were also introduced to Adonis whose story broke my heart. Plus, he’s actually THE Adonis, a walking, talking dream come true, irresistible to all women out there.

My one little issue is that Ms. Blevins has a tendency to delve deep into details, especially when it comes to metaphysical subjects. I felt these discussions were more prevalent in this story, maybe a bit too prevalent.

Loved the time spent reading Of Humans and Monsters, it was action packed and suspenseful, but also sexy and steamy despite the lack of true romance. I hope Kirsten finds her one someday but until then I’ll enjoy all the friends with benefits she has.

I want moreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee !!!! GIMME !!!!!

OMG !! this book is soooo good, sooo tension building, so sizzling hot, I'm having mood swings and hot flashes every couple of pages!!! I had to re-read the previous two books (spoiler: its not a standalone !!!) cause I wanted the story to flow and not recalling stuff, and I discovered that I love and go crazy over the story and its complexity ... to describe it using the authors tools - Candace is rubbing our G spot with all three books, but we are still not allowed to come ... the finish line is still ahead!!! Now I'm contemplating coming for a visit and demanding the rest !!!
This is such complex story and the foundation for it .... well done, Candace !!!! the book and its info will have you powering up google and reading on tons of stuff and you will go from "OMG!!!" to "NO WAY!!!" to "WHAAAAAT?" in couple of pages, and it glues you to the story, that you just have to read it !!!!
Our favorite redhead Kristen is at it again, and she is pushing buttons, calling names and keeping score with all the big shots and still comes out on top (her top *wink* ). All the boys and couple of girls are there and we get to go back into the time of other books from Candace and it makes me want to re-read them again (again!!!)
The fantasy stuff is sooo on point, I'm telling you, this would be a kick ass movie if the do it the way Candace wrote it !!! at some points in the book, I was of the idea Candace should have been consulted on some blockbuster movies about gods and legends cause she knows her stuff.
I'm not going to get into details what happens, cause you need to read it to get the whole picture and to get the full blown effect.
Candace, this is just another masterpiece and I demand you give me rest woman !!!!! don't be cruel !!!!

This has been an amazing series, please know that it must be read in order. Also if you have read the Chattanooga Supernaturals series and the Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Club series you will recognize some of the other characters in the story, it is not necessary to have read them but it will enhance your appreciation of the story.

I have to say that this series gets better and better with each story, Kirsten is one badass human with super natural powers but she is trying to keep her extra curricular activities to a minimum in order to have a normal life to raise her daughter. This unassuming sex therapist can go against some of the biggest threats out there no matter if its a God or a Demon...or anything in between. If you ask me there aren't enough stories written with a strong female character so I applaud Candace Blevins for not only giving us one of the strongest female characters I have read but to have an entire series revolve around her is spectacular. I cannot wait to see where Kirsten is led next but I have to say that I hope she gets to find the man meant for her soon, I LOVE all of the sexy times she has had with various partners but I can't wait to see her find someone that cherishes every part of her, from badass fighter against evil to the sexual submissive, Kirsten deserves that.

Of Human And Monsters, book 3 of the Only Human series, starts off a little slower than the first two of the series, that is just my opinion which has been fiercely disagreed with. However, Of Humans And Monsters is a wild ride that doesn't stop once it gets going. There's are more gods to drool over, MC werewolves you will beg Candace for one of your own, a discovery of a family member, and a creature worse than any nightmare you could conceive of as a child or an adult. This book is an exciting, roller-coaster of action, adventure, emotions, and heart-stopping excitement! Once again Candace Blevins has made reading more than a pleasure, more than an escape from reality, and more than a book! She has created a world unto itself. And I can never thank her enough for allowing me to be a part of her world!

This episode in Kristen's life sees her trying to step back from fighting, to be more 'normal' and be a mom and a therapist, and of course, that all fall apart because, duh, some super-super naturals know about her. All sorts of things happen here, with the Celaru coming back, a 'something different about him'guy brought in for her protection, Ryan, another big player noticing and wanting to know about her, Xaephan has a cameo, and causes issues of course. We see more into Nathan and Kirsten's dynamics in their friendship, Randall is a bit of dick, and Kristen has some fun with a member of the RTMC. Sprinkle some Abbott and Bran around, and some further deepening of Kristen's abilities, oh, and another bad guy taken out that may cause some problems down the road, makes for an action-packed, mentally stimulating, and can't put down read!

Ms. Blevins created a wonderful world, full of interesting characters. The plot is intriguing, erotic and filled with suspense. I loved the characters and the part they are playing. Some things about Kirsten are revealed and make more sense. Shi is one strong female with special powers and furthermore she is sexual submissive which makes her even more interesting for other parties.

I loved the development and am interested where it will lead from now on. I was a bit disappointed about Abbott, I think she was a bit harsh with her decision but on the other hand I understand her need for independence and trust. I think their further scenes could be mind-blowing :)

Make sure that you have read the first two books in this series to be able to fully appreciate this one. I am a voracious reader of many types of books but urban fantasy is a new world for me and I am loving it.
For Candace Blevins to be able to take her astonishing imagination and put it into words is truly amazing. The beings she has created enthrall me.
I am entranced by Kirsten and her developing abilities as she makes her way through every new situation she finds herself in all while doing her best to keep her home life intact.
While not exactly a cliff-hanger you are left knowing there is much more to come since she has already committed herself to help others in the future and fortunately for me the next book is not too far away.

I love this series. Yeah, the world-building continues to get more and more complex and new entities are added. The action is good but is not omnipresent.

One aspect which is unique in this series is that the main character enjoys sex, really enjoys pain and submission (she is a masochist), but is not getting into romance. She is not looking for a "magic penis" to settle down with. That doesn't stop her from loving her friends. She is not emotionally stunted at all, but this is not a paranormal romance. And I find that delightful.

Oh man!

The things that Kirsten has learned about herself is just crazy!! But she's Only Human. LOL I'm intrigued by all the new characters we meet, most of them are good guys, some are from the past & one is family.

I can't stop reading this Series. I'm reading in Candace's suggested order, mixing all 3 Series together. I have the advantage of having them all available too, well as of now.

Enjoy!! I'm off to read Riding the Storm.

I didn't find this story as fast-paced as books one and two, but good plot progression, overall, and I still love the characters and their quirks. Twists, turns, and plots-within-plots make the storyline fascinating, and great writing keeps readers riveted. Can't express how much I love the series-- off to book 4.

We get to see more of Kirsten's life, and some of the characters of other books. Kirsten wants to take time away from the supernatural but things just keep happening drawing her back in. While all along working to better herself at her craft. This story moves along at a great pace.

The third installment of the Only Human series builds on the human/supernatural world created by Candace Blevins from the previous two books. I like how the main character in this book Kirsten, really just wants to go home and spend time with her daughter and at work help her normal patients but as her powers keep growing and the risk increases it makes it more difficult to do so. I also love how this story brings in old friends from the other books and series she has written. This story is not one which would be easy to understand if the first two in the series had not been read and is written from Kirsten's point of view.

This is a transition book, as therefore to me it is obvious there is more to this series to come and I am definitely keen to know what comes next. Many questions are answered before the end of this story but also leaves enough questions that I am intrigued to want to read the next book and see what happens next. Who knew Chattanooga was such a hotbed of paranormal activity.

This book is for the reader who likes to think outside that square and wants to find character's they cant help but cheer for even if you knew they are not totally good, but have some interesting badness to them.

I have been given this eARC by the author for an honest and frank review.

Shapeshifters, vampires & fantastical creatures make this action packed storyline in book 3 a great read. Kirsten, hunted by Aquila, has some wicked power revelations after being hurt and healed. Drake Security rescues a surprising light weapon wielder from the Celrau. Characters from the MC are interwoven through the story to include erotica that Ms. Blevins does so well. New paranormals introduced and nice storyline tidbits to look forward to in following books. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

I have discovered that I really like Urban Fantasy....especially Kirsten's universe! while I normally hate first person writing, it works so well in this genre and I was so wrapped up in the story I barely even noticed. We met new creatures/characters and they melded in the world like they were always there. The action was intense and the story flowed seamlessly. Great series!!

I just finished this book and my head is still reeling from all the twist and turns this one took.
At first it felt like a family reunion. Getting back to Kirsten's nucleus family, her extended family among the supernaturals, the RTMC and Drake Security. Enter an old acquaintance in a new and deliciously kinky role, a surprising shift in the family constellation, new "friends", or maybe not?
And that's just in this world. Ms Blevins takes us on a furious ride through different realms, parallel and in-between worlds, a hint to time travel, a sideswipe into gods and demigods territory, lots of gorey fights, and a new travel concept.
Have I forgotten something? Yessss! Lots of kinky supernatural (and shifter) steaminess!
It always fascinates me how Ms Blevins mixes provable facts and fiction so seamlessly that you take almost every new concept she introduces at face value. Even scaly un-killable monsters!
The story ended way too soon. Although with a whisper of things to come.
And now begins the wait for the continuation of Kristens story. Quousque?
I volontarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

“Of Humans and Monsters” is book 3 in Candace Blevins Only Human series and oh boy was it exciting. I admit to missing out on a bit of work because the starts and stops to the story I was doing during work breaks just wasn’t cutting it. This. Story. Was. Fabulous. There’s so much going on and the entertainment was fast-paced, wild, sexy, hot, amazing, and swoons…sooo good.

If you’ve been reading the Only Human series or considering it, the books keep getting better and better. There’s so much going on and the way she draws in the other characters are just superb. You won’t be disappointed.

*Raises hand, I solemnly swear that I am up to no go–…uh, I received an ARC because really, who wants to wait.

This is Kirsten’s third book (after Only Human and An Unhuman Journey: you should read them in that order!), and each has become progressively more complex not only in story line but also in regard to the world she is exposed to beyond the “normal” human world. Because things have become so complicated, Candace has presented us with a glossary of unfamiliar terms, which is very useful (Thank you, Candace!), particularly for those of us who read #1 two years ago when it first came out, and #2 eight months ago. It isn’t quite as scary as Unhuman Journey, which is OK by me, since I am a wuss! The sex scenes are great (actually fun as well as sexy), but really beside the point of the story. I guess they are part of the good, “normal,” part of her life. “Normal,” given that she is a submissive masochist, anyway! Those uncomfortable with BDSM, be warned, but I think you could skim or skip a couple of pages and be fine.
Several new characters are introduced, and (hoping this isn’t a spoiler) you eventually find yourself feeling sorry for a god who you would expect to be envious of! In some ways, this book feels like an “old home week” of vampires and other supernaturals from the “Chattanooga Supernaturals” series, with a few characters from the “RTMC” series thrown in. Given she consults with a shape-shifter’s security firms and used to date a vampire, that’s hardly a surprise. But in many cases I thought those characters had already been fully fleshed out in the previous books (Candace’s specialty) of any of these three series, but additional details keep getting layered on top. Nothing EVER gets stale in her books!
One of the other reasons that her books are always fresh is the tantalizing number of what are probably teasers for additional books. If I am right about all the things I guess might be teasers, we have several more books to look forward to!
Beyond Kirsten’s metaphysical powers and her fights against various evil foes, she has a strong need to be at home with her daughter, the young woman living with her (who might as well be a daughter), and last but not least, her dog. All of the three books end with her returning safely, and with relief, to her home and loved ones. I guess you have to end the books somewhere, but I always find this a little bit of a let-down. Not that I can suggest an alternative, of course. Maybe I just don’t want the books to end. And certainly these endings are better than books that end with true cliff-hangers (so annoying!) so I guess I can’t complain too much! I was gifted with an ARC of this book. It is always a privilege to read and review one of her books!

Give me more please!
I love Kirsten! Her world just gets more and more interesting with each book. The supernatural just has to suck her in deeper and deeper each time. Love the storyline in this series. All of the characters are awesome, they give you something to think about and you get the chance to like them or not based on what they show you. I cannot wait for the next book. Epic battle?! Bring it on!
