In his critical study Lives of the Poets, Michael Schmidt defines Baxter's 'Jacobean consonantal rhetoric'.Schmidt has claimed that Baxter was 'one of the most precocious poets of the century' whose neglect outside of New Zealand is baffling. His writing was affected by his alcoholism. His work drew upon Dylan Thomas and Yeats; then on MacNeice and Lowell. Michael Schmidt identifies 'an amalgam of Hopkins, Thomas and native atavisms' in Baxter's 'Prelude N.Z.

"I think the Lord on his axe-chopped cross
Is laughing as usual at my poems"
This was my first encounter with James K. Baxter. It is a collection of three series of poems and two pieces of prose. After reading it, some sentences echoed in my head for a while.
However, it was difficult for me to read. I don't speak Maori, so I checked the translation of the words, then reread the whole poems to get the meaning.
It is difficult to talk about poetry, it evokes feelings that are hard to describe.
