Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration. He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended. His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts. In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.
Vegeta: "Kakarrot... you really are amazing. I didn't stand a chance against Majin Boo. The only one who could fight him was you. I think I know why now... I know why I can't even come close to you... I thought it was because you had things you wanted to protect... I thought that strong will of yours to protect brought you mysterious powers... but, I have that same desire now, and yet... I fight for my own reasons... for my own pleasure, to kill my opponents, and for my pride... But he's different... He doesn't fight to win... He fights so that he can better himself each time, and to overcome his limits... That's why he never took the lives of his opponents... He even spared my life... It's almost like he knew that I would eventually care for others... It pisses me off...! To think that a gentle Saiyan would still love to fight... Hang in there, Kakarrot... You are number one!!"
I joke about Vegeta admitting his inferiority to GODku, and verbally KNEELing to the strongest warrior in Universe 7, but in all seriousness the above quote is a great summation of Goku's character, at least as far as concerns the so-called "Z" content of the manga/anime, and extending backward to the fight against Piccolo Junior. I'd have to re-read the manga (which I plan on doing anyway), but I think Goku's initial interest in martial arts wasn't purely wakuwaku, and that really only started with Tenshinhan, and most definitely from Ma Junior and onward. Goku tried to kill Taopaipai and Piccolo Daimaou to avenge his friends. Same with Raditz, who was killed so hard he disappeared from everyone's memory, never to be revived, even with Vegeta having been a greater murderer in his first appearance on Earth (didn't Raditz only kill Farmer With a Shotgun?). Oolong, Yamcha, Kuririn, Tenshinhan, Chaozu, Piccolo Jr., Vegeta, No. 18, and Fat Boo all befriend Goku after spending some time as antagonists. Goku spared Piccolo Jr., Vegeta, and Fat Boo so he could fight them again. Goku gave ki to Freeza to allow him to redeem himself (he didn't), and a Senzu to Cell to power him back up enough to face Gohan on more even ground. He also gave a Senzu to Piccolo Jr. in the course of sparing him earlier. Rather than hate Pure Boo, Goku is proud to have fought such a strong enemy, and wishes for his reincarnation as a good person (Oob, who unfortunately never gets to do anything too cool).
Anyway, this volume covers the battle between Vegetto and Super Boo, followed by the rise and eventual defeat of Pure ("Kid") Boo, and concluding with an epilogue tournament ten years later. The Potara fusion of Son Goku and Vegeta is a good climax to the rivalry that began so long ago, even if the consequence is trivializing prior rivalries with Kuririn, Tenshinhan, and Piccolo. The Pure Boo battle is more like a "capstone" on top of the Vegetto fight, with the most "important" part being Vegeta's above-quoted monologue in praise of Goku, which occurs while SS3 Goku and Pure Boo exchange blows, ki blasts, and bites; the actual fight feels less important than Vegeta's words, and since this is generally not so verbose a manga you can better feel the significance of the soliloquy. Pure Boo ejects Fat Boo from his body, and the two clash for enough time that Goku and Vegeta are allowed to bond as brothers in arms a bit more. Then Vegeta wraps up his character development to become something like a "Saiyan raised on Earth," by coming up with the plan for a Super Genki-Dama using all of Earth's energy. And I guess Mr. Satan helps out so he might better justify his inclusion of the endgame cast, what with being Gohan's future father-in-law (effectively making him far more significant than Gyuu-Maou, Goku's own father-in-law, or Dr. Briefs, Vegeta's). The use of a Genki-Dama that actually does its job is a good way to close the Z part of the series, as previously the smaller GDs against Vegeta and Freeza didn't pan out. We get cameos of Suno, Hacchan, Bora, and Upa to tie further back into the chapters from before Goku turned out to be an alien, which is nice, too.
As I did for the last Full Color Cell Arc volume, I want to take a moment to appraise the Boo Arc. An issue with the Full Color compilations is that they group the entire manga into six arcs: Boyhood, Piccolo, Saiyan, Freeza, Artificial Humans, and Boo. This biggest issue occurs with the "Boyhood Arc," as it does not separate the Red Ribbon Army content, which is maybe excusable because Goku wasn't yet physically mature during that arc, but... the Piccolo Arc includes the Daimaou stuff, during which Goku was two days older than in the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai that closes the "Boyhood" volumes. My point is that something of a "precedent" was set, as the so-called "Boo Arc" spends the entire first volume not dealing with Boo or Babidi in any way. Spopovich and Yamu are introduced in the second part. I put "precedent" in quotes because technically the Full Color Boo Arc was released before the Boyhood and Piccolo Arcs, but it still works to say someone at Shueisha decided to lump things together in an overly simplistic way, which is true for the Great Saiyaman stuff being part of the Boo Arc, and later for everything before Piccolo Daimaou being grouped as a singular "Boyhood Arc." Thus, I would personally feel it best to divide Dragon Ball into: Journey to the West Arc, 21st Budokai, Red Ribbon, 22nd Budokai, Piccolo Daimaou, 23rd Budokai, Saiyan, Namek/Freeza, Jinzouningen/Cell, Saiyaman/25th Budokai, and Boo Arcs. So the "Boo Arc" I'm reviewing is distinct from what I view as the Saiyaman Arc, but... I'll have to lump them together myself because that's how the Full Color version goes, so my whole spiel is kinda pointless.... Even including the pre-Boo/non-Boo stuff, this is a good arc, in my opinion. As with Cell, I'm heavily biased with Nostalgia, so take it with a grain of salt. I guess the only "issue" is that Boo doesn't necessarily seem like too big a threat compared to Cell or Freeza. Freeza was probably the most threatening, because his goal was immortality, which would allow him to conquer the rest of the universe, having already gotten most of it, but eventually moving closer to Earth. The battle against Freeza led to the destruction of Planet Namek, which shows Freeza's strength. Cell said he could destroy the solar system with his full-powered Kamehame-Ha, but we never saw it happen. He killed tens of thousands of people, but... I don't know, between Piccolo Daimaou and Nappa I don't think we were ever enticed to care about random civilians. Here, Boo is a threat to the universe, but we never really see it. We do see him kill every human on Earth except Satan, and he destroys the planet as well, which is more than can be said of any previous villain, so there is at least some quantifiable degree of escalation, even if it's of a much smaller scale than what is theorized by the characters. After Freeza, or more specifically after Goku becomes the Super Saiyan, it feels like Toriyama has already decided Goku is the strongest being in the universe, so the next villains are meant to be "evil Gokus." Cell has some DNA from Goku, and can do a Kamehame-Ha. Boo can copy the Kamehame-Ha perfectly after seeing it once, which Goku did way back when, after first meeting Muten Roshi. Cell and Boo both ultimately want to fight just because it's fun, they're strong, and they want to show how strong they are. This is pretty much Goku's sole motivation by this point in the story, so it's fitting he'll fight both dudes, and perhaps even more fitting he'll take care of Boo more directly than he did Cell (when he tagged his son in). Stopping Pilaf from wishing for world conquest, stopping Commander Red from getting taller, killing Piccolo Sr., turning Piccolo Jr. good, helping kill Raditz, beating Nappa to the point of having Vegeta kill him, turning Vegeta good, beating Freeza to the point of having Trunks kill him, and training Gohan to kill Cell, Goku has helped the people of Earth many times in his life. It follows that the earthlings should back him up by giving him the energy for a Super Genki-Dama to defeat the world's greatest threat.
As with the previous arc, this one introduces a number of new forms. Way more than the Cell Arc, actually. Goku and Vegeta both get SS2. Vegeta has his "Majin" form, which is basically just SS2, but we'll count it as its own thing. Goku gets SS3. Goten and Trunks use Fusion. Gotenks gets SS3. Goku and Vegeta use Potara earrings. Gohan has his innermost potential unlocked by the Old Kai. There's also Fat Boo, Evil Boo, Super Boo, Bootenks, Boocolo, Boohan, Buff Boo, and Pure Boo, as well as Innocent/Mister Boo (which is just non-evil Fat Boo) and Oob, giving Boo more forms than either Freeza or Cell, and arguably as many as both combined (Freeza has four forms, plus his 100% Power mode, plus his Cyborg body, totaling six; Cell has three forms, plus his Full Power mode, totaling four; Boo has ten, if we count bad Fat Boo and good Fat Boo as distinct). No pre-existing character really does any new (named) attacks, unless we count the Super Genki-Dama as distinct from the previous uses. Gotenks has a shitload of new, wacky techniques, many of which are very different from how we've previously seen ki applied (but most are just him giving corny names to punches and kicks). So for those readers who want crazy action stuff from Dragon Ball, the Boo Arc certainly delivers.
Character development is good as well. Gohan becomes a goofball for some reason, but later builds up to a legitimate Saiyan, and takes on his father's wakuwaku spirit. Vegeta abuses his evil past to gain new strength, then decides he loves his wife, son, and new home. Goku is wakuwaku and heroic, but is open to allow for new heroes to take the stage.
There is some controversy regarding whether Pure Boo is stronger than Boohan, an issue I attribute to Funimation's fanfiction dub. Kibitoshin mentions the absorption of the other Kaioshins gave Boo a heart, which weakened him. Boo himself runs on nonsensical Looney Tunes physics, so it's not unbelievable. Super Boo grew attached to the self-awareness he'd gained in his past few days of life, and feared a return to his basest self. To reach too far out of original canon, in Super Goku gets "Ultra Instinct," which basically turns his mind off to dodge and attack by pure instinct; this isn't too different from how Pure Boo seems to operate. If Goku's newest ability is now his strongest, why would it not be true for a similar effect in Boo to also be his strongest state? In the English dub of the anime, we're bogged down by questionable lore that "Kid Buu" is not stronger than Super Boo, but is just completely unhinged and unpredictable, which makes him more dangerous. From Toriyama's own words through Kibitoshin, and from what we see him add to his newer stories, it seems more accurate to say Pure Boo is indeed stronger than his previous form. He's gotten shorter, which makes Vegeta act more cocksure at the chance of victory, but Freeza's fourth form is shorter than his previous two, and Perfect Cell is at least shorter than his first form (I can't remember exactly whether Semi-Perfect was taller). There's no reason to believe a shorter Boo is a weaker Boo. Really, I don't even know if it's still a topic of discussion whether Pure Boo is stronger or weaker, but I wanted to put in my $0.02.
****
*Boo: "Oh my... I'M SO SCARED!!" *Old Kai: "And it doesn't hurt that they live to outdo each other." *Vegetto's Spirit Sword *Vegetto: "Well? Not so talkative now, are you? This is getting boring... I wish you'd get more serious... Or is this the best you can do? Then I'm sorry. I didn't mean to be rude." *Vegetto beating Boo's ass in the steam, cutting off his antenna *Vegetto: "That's what I'm going to do to you later. You can't regenerate if you're disintegrated!" *Vegetto: "Don't worry. I'm surprised too!! That is, surprised by how pathetic you are." *Boohan's Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack!!!! **Vegetto: "Did you really think that would work? Kids thought up that attack. It seems like you're getting desperate." *Boo: "This isn't fair!! You fused!! **Vegetto: "So what? You're the one who keeps absorbing people! Look, I could beat you only using my legs!! *Vegetto, as a coffee candy: "Whoops, sorry 'bout that! Looks like I'm just as strong as I was before! What're gonna do? Your foe's the strongest candy in the world! Is this annoying for you? Now that I'm smaller, I'm harder to hit!!" *Candy!Vegetto shooting through Boo's mouth and cutting his antenna again **Vegetto (internally): "He finally figured it out. That's the reason why I cut that part of your head!!" Baiting Boo into absorbing Vegetto so the latter can kick the former's ass from within. *Boo losing his nose when Goku and Vegeta free the cocooned people in his mind **Boocolo doesn't have five separate fingers, though I'm pretty sure he did formerly *Vegeta: "I saw it in the afterlife. There's no way in hell that I would do such ridiculous poses!! And I already said I wouldn't fuse with you again!!" But Fusion Reborn came out around the same time.... *Boo: "Don't do it!! I won't be me anymore!!" Boo fearing the loss of ego that will come from reverting to his "Pure" form. *Super Boo to Swole Boo to Pure (aka Kid) Boo **the Buff and Fat forms of Boo came from Pure Boo eating two different Kaioshin. There are said to be five total, four each representing a cardinal direction, and a Dai Kaioshin governing them all. In Super, each universe's Hakaishin is attached to a single Kaioshin, making it seem like someone forgot there are meant to be more Kaioshins within each universe, or otherwise Shin himself got promoted and I forgot about it.... *Kibitoshin: "He gained a heart due to the absorptions, which reduced his power... This Boo is a pure incarnation of the idea of evil..." *Old Kai: "Why are there Dragon Balls on Earth?! Only Namekians are allowed to have them!! This is like breaking the rules!!" This would be a theme that crops up somewhat frequently in Super: both the invention of time machines and Gero turning the twins into Artificial Humans No. 17 and 18 are seen as major violations of the gods' rules for mortals. *"Pichi-Pichi Gals," which pops up in Super as 90% of Roshi's dialogue *Vegeta: "I was right!! How dare you do that to her!! If you want saucy pictures, get some of your own wife!!" **Goku: But she's flat-chested and would kill me!!" Looking at more pics, I guess Chi-chi really was always "smaller" than Bulma. Makes her name pretty ironic.... *Goku, dismissing the second set of Potara: "No thanks. We don't need them. That's not how we do things. Thanks for the offer, though. It'll be tough, but I want to fight with my own power... Sorry to do this at such a bad time." Even though he uses everyone on Earth's power in the end.... **Vegeta: "That's just how we Saiyans are." *Old Kai: "Those idiots!! They're fighting him one-on-one!! They're not gonna team up!!" This will also be an important theme for Super. *Goku: "You know, when I fought the fat Majin Boo, I could've beaten him with Super Saiyan 3... but I wanted to give the kids something to do." SOCIOPATHku putting the world in danger to pass his wakuwaku genes to his son. *Pure Boo's gorilla-like chest-drumming *Boo breaking his fall by turning into a flying squirrel *Boo kicking Goku through the ground, which is really fun to do in FighterZ *Goku: "You idiot!! This is a real Kamehame-Ha!!" *when biding time for Goku to recharge, Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta dunks a big ki ball at Boo that seems similar to his son's Finish Buster, but I can't see anything online naming this particular move *Satan's presence on the Kaioshinkai forcing Pure Boo to eject Fat Boo so he won't be weakened by the latter's innocence (this doesn't change Pure Boo's physical appearance) **Pure Boo versus Fat Boo while the Saiyans regain their strength *Old Kai: "Still, I wouldn't care if Mr. Satan gets the crap beaten out of him..." *Pure Boo flying through Fat Boo's face and destroying his head (Fat Boo gets better) *Goku: "I guess Super Saiyan 3 really drains the ki out of a living body..." *Vegeta, to Goku: "Sometimes... you should let the people of Earth take responsibility for themselves." *Old Kai: "Geez, what a bunch of assholes!! Hw dare you ignore the rules!!" *Porunga doing the "okay" hand sign when confirming his ability to grant a wish *Boo ripping off an arm, balling it up, and throwing it all around Fat Boo *Goku, to Vegeta (when the latter's halo disappears): "I guess you're not as evil as some people thought you were!" *Vegeta: "It's time to use the Genki-Dama!!" **Kaio-sama: "That's Vegeta for you!! Choosing my Genki-Dama as the coup de grace!!" *adult Upa, middle-aged Bora, Artificial Human No. 8, Suno, and No. 17 appearing and giving Goku their energy. I'm actually brainfarting as to how 17 would know Goku's voice, unless he heard it while within Cell; I had the same question when the same idea popped up in a Super episode I watched recently as well **Satan assisting with the Super Genki-Dama by speaking through Kaio-sama and appealing to all the normies who don't know Goku. By the way, I guess billions of people with weak ki can add up beyond the ki of the other Dragon Team members who initially gave energy to Goku? **Dende and Porunga assisting by restoring Goku's energy while he holds the SGD, allowing him to push the attack at Boo as a Super Saiyan **Goku: "You were amazing. You've really done your best... all by yourself... I hope that next time you'll be reborn as a good guy... I wanna fight a one-on-one match with you... I'll be waitin' for ya... and I'll get super strong for you... See ya soon!!" *Goku's thumbs-up at the end of Chapter 516 *Videl: "Not again, Dad..." *Goku: "It's only fair, Vegeta. This Boo and Mr. Satan tried to help us. Without their help, we'd all be dead. Right?" *Chapter 518 cover: GILF Chi-chi; Goku in blue gi (which looks green in the Full Color manga); "Son Goten (grew his hair out to look different than Goku)"; "Muten Roshi (got new shades)" *Goku, about Pan: She's got the most willpower out of all of us!" *Gohan, on the benches near the arena: "I'd rather be competing..." *the same announcer is still working, even while clearly old *meme'd PSYCHOku face in Chapter 519 *Goku, trying to taunt Oob into unleashing angry power: "Your dad... also shits his pants!!" *the image of kid Goku beside Oob on the Kinto'un made me tear up a bit....
