First Responder

First Responder is a dark romance psychological thriller. Centrally located between Malibu Creek and Topanga state parks is a lonely stretch of road the locals refer to as the ‘Mulholland Dieway’. Here first responders frequently rally to save those unfortunate enough to find themselves stranded and in need of assistance. For years Karen thought that section of road was unusually treacherous-tonight would be no different.

Nearby lies a creature with a heart as black as night. It has reinvented itself and moves through time unnoticed by most. It feeds on those less fortunate and in dire straits. Immersing itself in the misfortune of others, it is a life saver for most, but for some, the last thing they will ever see. This is the first book an unnamed trilogy.

I write the kind of horror that stands right beside you—quiet, ordinary, and already happening. Not the creatures that crawl from graves, but the ones that smile at you in line at the grocery store. The horror that lives behind closed doors, in unfinished thoughts, in the moment a good person does the wrong thing for the right reason. It was here yesterday. It is here now. And if you’re lucky, you won’t notice it tomorrow.

My work pulls back the curtain on what your neighbors, your friends, your family, and complete strangers do when no one is watching. These are stories that make you look away, then look back because you have to know. The part of you that wants answers—and the part that prays you never get them—meet in the same dark place.

If you’re drawn to tales of broken self-esteem, cause-and-effect spirals, first responders under pressure, vengeful spirits, psychological predators, moral ambiguity, vampires, serial killers, vacations gone wrong, or everyday life tilting just a little too far into ruin—my books are built for you.

James H. Summers was born in suburban Chicago in the 1960s and raised in Kentuckiana, where he still lives. A lifelong fan of horror (especially B-movies), he draws inspiration from Edgar Allan Poe, Clive Barker, Stephen King, Anne Rice, J. R. R. Tolkien, J. K. Rowling, and R. A. Salvatore. His cinematic tastes run wide, influenced by the work of Guillermo del Toro, Peter Jackson, Quentin Tarantino, Zack Snyder, and Chad Stahelski—filmmakers he hopes one day will bring his worlds to the big screen.

I loved this book! Being honest I usually don't include this kind of fiction books in my book hauls. But definitely I was quite surprised by this book that I couldn't stop reading. It was really entertaining and actually very easy to read. Karen's journey is filled with suspense that immediately captivated me and pulled me in with the first pages.

First Responder becomes a page-turner novel that looks into the world of vampires and wolves. This work transverses the ordinary and cliche vampire story. This one highlights the lives of the first responder. With an exciting and full of twists plot, it is fascinating to read such real-life man-to-man combat. Each chapter has its own story, as is evident by the different killing-spree scenarios pushing characters to their limits.

Overall, it is a book to be read with an open mind due to its trigger warnings and taking time to absorb the action in each chapter. I also loved how the author did not shy away from controversial themes such as the confrontation of Dr. Stevens and Father Wayne for the fact that Dr. Stevens’ victims are either dying or sickly, while Father Wayne’s victims are innocent children and James Summers’ writing is one of the most impactful stories I have read in a while.

First Responder is a novel wrought with bloodshed and pain but is also satisfyingly filled with action and the belief in the existence of vampires and wolves. Kudos and massive respect to the author.

2 EMTs or vampire hunters, a doctor, the presence of the kids, intriguing minor characters, and a good entertaining vampire novel, First Responder delivered beyond what I could have imagined.

In an intense clash between vampires, EMTs, and wolves, there’s no place for the weak. The city is invaded by vampires, and its empire is expanding. Mostly they appear in mist, fly or appear in dreams and become your worst nightmares. The murder of anyone who gets in their way means nothing to them, mere collateral damage of their nefarious plan.

Every chapter is an experience itself, and it goes from erotic to dark in seconds that you don’t quite expect but should see coming. And it’s compounded with a sense of dark and brutal murders that gets worse as the story progresses. The only qualm I have for this book is that everything came at you fast and hard, not giving you a chance to sit with it in the end. There was only so much you could do with the major stakes of the book, only so much that you could take in at a time. As such, it didn’t quite stick the landing, despite a spectacular attempt to do so.

A book with just the right amount of horror, drama, romance, action, and shocking moments that kept me captivated and entertained without being overbearing. I’ve got to admit, I was utterly impressed.

Karen’s character is an inspiration. She doesn’t back out from a fight, and even though it would cost her her life, she keeps on fighting and sticking with her objectives. With all the turmoil and horrific acts happening in the city brought about by these perverted and blood-sucking monsters, everyone is not safe. Although Karen’s mission is a suicide mission, the plot gives us an exciting twist of events. Moreover, I never expected the appearance of the werewolves. As a result, I was heavily surprised and I liked it. The challenging story of the lives of these protagonists would have you at the edge of your seat wanting to learn more about what’s going to happen next. It’s crazy to think how the vampires in this novel appear to be normal, think normal, and act normal only to find out later that another murder has been committed.

Extremely frightening and fun to read, First Responder is a must-have for horror and romance enthusiasts.

I was intrigued by the author’s talent for storytelling in this book. To me, it’s tricky to open a story from the parts of the middle only to pull you back and start from the beginning. I find that many authors end up pulling too far back or starting too far in the middle of the story, and this mistake usually defeats the purpose of this technique which is to give the readers ample suspense and curiosity to get through the beginning section of the story. But this didn’t seem to be a problem for James Summers. His opening scene was perfectly dramatic and action filled with stunning details that pulled me right into the scene and into the plot. When the innocent woman met Dr. Stevens and finally confessed about what happened to her, she was then strangled to death, and bitten alive. When the things in the opening finally happened, the momentum was still in full force, and, to me, that’s how stunning this book is.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and I look forward to more of this author’s works.

James Summers writes in a mesmerizing style that keeps the readers’ eyes glued to the pages, and their souls bonded with the characters. Perhaps the fact that this book is written with passion and skills is one of the highlights of the book. The realistic approach of the author in delivering the plot gives us a glimpse of what could be inside the mind of the serial killers known as the vampires. However, there are still heroes like Karen who are willing to sacrifice themselves to do what she is tasked to do.

Though written in fiction, the scenes appeared real like that vampire apocalypse in movies and interestingly, this book portrays how an infection could spread like a virus in the whole city. Police can’t do anything about it. Gruesome murders had the police chasing dust in the beginning. The most exciting part for me was the fight between Karen and her partner Lisa. James did not disappoint me and even exceeded my expectations with this heart-stopping, erotic, and scary novel that filled me with excitement and thrill. I can’t recommend this book enough!

A fascinating story with interesting characters set in a unique world. Something dark is going on, accidents that turned into murders, and ultimately death of innocent people. Serial Killers have been reported to be blood-sucking and with fangs. However, there’s no indication whether they are vampires or not, for one, they are not afraid of the cross, holy water, and the like. They are ruthless, brutal, and dangerous. Karen’s task is to find these vampires and eliminate them while saving innocent people as much as she can. However, the beautiful twist brought two EMTs Karen and Lisa became partners to enemies.

While I enjoy the action and horror, my attention was also fascinated by the way innocent victims are killed. They are either tortured or raped before being fed. With great plot twists and well-drawn characters, this one is hard to put down. Readers will find it easy to follow the storyline.

Highly recommended!

While reading this heart-stopping, erotic, scary, and fascinating novel, I was blown away by the book’s characters and plot. I wanted to leap into the pages and help Karen and the rest of the EMTs to hunt the vampires. First Responder is a sort of combination of the famous series Twilight and Resident Evil. It beautifully engages readers with amazing revelation and deep action with stunning accuracy, this novel is simply hard to top.

This is a novel that portrays all aspects of the thrill and excitement, both good and bad, leaving nothing out of the shadows that lurk in each reader’s murky heart and mind. The role of the minor characters was beautifully woven into the plot to continue a magnificent story that not only tells a theme but also teaches readers important values. What a remarkable book.

Rated these one five stars. James Summers once again proved to me that his books are worth the read.

The best thing about books, especially novels, is that they bring the readers to a completely different place and time without having to leave the comfort of their reading area. James Summers’ First Responder is no exception. I truly enjoyed every part of it. James successfully captivates his readers with his knowledge of vampires and wolves. The part where there are gruesome murders and wild nightmares is eye-catching and drawing.

James is very rich in his language in every conversation, and the description of the scenes is intricately detailed. It’s very arousing, both mind and muscle! His words could simply be called artistic and sensual in a way that just pulls you right in. Right from the start, I was on board. The climactic moments and scenes of the story are further emphasized and dramatized with the magical way James chooses and weaves his words. There’s always something to be thrilled about in every situation in the story.

Captivating, suspenseful, and surprising: with eloquent prose that brings to life realistic and believable events.

Karen knew exactly what she was going to do, however, her little mistakes ultimately led her to almost being killed. One of which was her innocent knowledge about Lisa’s involvement in the vampire community, and the other one was her fight scene at the end. Luckily, she was saved by another responder. The plot’s twist made this book more remarkable. The fate of some minor characters was unexpected and of course, Dr. Stevens’ cunning personality was highly engaging.

Karen has her fate to be killed yet she made a fascinating comeback just in the nick of time. There was always a satisfying touch of thrill and excitement. Each chapter brings a whole new experience. It is an easy read for a horror and suspense fix while trying to relax while still being suspenseful and exciting.

I saw this book on a shelf, I’d be compelled to pick it up and look inside. First Responder is a book about the existence of vampires and how they could live among us normally and discreetly. First impressions matter and this is my honest review.

First Responder by James Summers has an intriguing title. If I saw this book on a shelf, I’d be compelled to pick it up and look inside. The plot was well-structured with just the right balance of drama, suspense, and action. It featured the different lives of the main characters and the antagonists. Every twist of the story has its huge surprises and aha moments.

Nonetheless, this is a novel and there are a lot of trigger warnings that may not be suitable for minors. Albeit, James Summers captivates his readers by expertly weaving a web of excitement and thrill, a dash of the heart of thumps, and a couple of well-placed suspense and action, and based on the cliffhanger at the end, it was simply hard to top.

An exciting and heart-thumping novel with many intriguing characters and a thought-provoking plot.

Join the adventure of this first responder as they learn and eliminate their blood-sucking enemies. And although Dr. Stevens’ intention was pure, it was still unrighteous to kill innocent victims. The unique description of the vampires in this book is unique and not the typical ones that you read mostly in other novels, or movies seen. Vampires appear as mist, fly, or even transform immediately. These are just a few of what vampires can do in this novel aside from their strength and unique personality.

Overall, the author expertly entwines intense conversations and narrations, chooses the most exciting parts of his protagonist’s life, and skillfully magnetizes the readers’ eyes into the pages. First Responder took up quite a huge part of my leisure time. Honestly, I’d say it was time well spent.

First Responder by James Summers is not for the faint of heart. It was such great fun reading this book. The way he describes the appearance of a setting in such a detailed way creates an incredibly clear image that it feels like I’m watching a movie as I read. The dialogues and body languages of the characters depict each character’s personality very well with no hint of discrepancy.

The story begins with a gruesome murder and while the conflict wraps up at the end of this book, the cliffhanger at the end lets readers know more is to come.

TW may contain profanity, gory murders, and deeply erotic scenes. If these things don’t bother you at all, then this one's for you. It’s something that you would want to take your time reading and savor all the engrossing conversations and plot twists.

I thoroughly enjoyed the characters in the novel, even though it was not my usual read. Despite their differences and fears about their objectives as protagonists, the characters' personalities were woven into the plot’s flow, creating a sense of harmony. I was on board from the first page.

The beginning scene was drawing, it right away surprises readers with gory murders and killings. I was deeply scared yet very much intrigued about what was going to happen next. I wanted to assist Karen in her job as an EMT as I was taken on a roller coaster ride of emotion page after page. The action in the novel is steady and exciting as well, with almost frantic moments regularly kicking the pace up to a notch. A major plot twist made me exclaim aloud; I was that surprised. With its entertaining premise and non-stop excitement and action, I strongly recommend First Responder.

Even though it isn’t the type of book I often read, I am in love with it. The characters in this novel had me rooting for them to succeed or fail, which I view as an indication that James Summers crafted well-drawn characters. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.

The existence of Dr. Stevens in the story is very important, as he holds the key to the success or failure of the whole vampire community. Though not explicit in the book, I can sense that Dr. Stevens is different from others and while a vampire in nature, I believe that he has a good heart deep inside.

First Responder becomes a very exciting and intriguing page-turner that captivates its readers. It has this perfect mix of well-written prose. There’s never a dull moment in the author’s storytelling and every narrated scene seems to come to life with its vivid description.

Karen is caught up between her job as a first responder and a vampire hunter. And when the conflict finally happens, Karen becomes the target. It almost took her life, but her combat skills became handy and she managed to survive many attacks.

The story flowed easily as expected, and the characters were all well-developed. I even liked the killing parts, they were satisfyingly exaggerated and the exchange of blows was great and narrated perfectly.

However, I was disappointed by the numerous and unnecessary conversations in most parts of the plot between the main characters and the confusing roles of the characters. I understand that James tried to give us a new and unique version of vampires, but the characters and dialogues took away much of the reading experience. As a result, I had to skip pages. Rated three stars for that.

The beauty of First Responder by James Summers lies in its perfect blend of action, thrill, drama, and realizations. I enjoyed the author’s deep perspective and ideas about the first responder mission which make this book unique and more lifelike. His characters come to life through explicit descriptions as well as their interactions with each other. The tone in which the whole story was being narrated was dire and action-packed with just the perfect number of brooding undertones accentuated by the meticulous choice of vocabulary that made the readers aware of the seriousness of the situation.

I like the ending, and though there were murders and confessions, the ending is timeless. And I believe that it’s going to leave a long-lasting impression on both minds and hearts of the readers. A great and suspenseful book to read!

An action-filled novel that is sure to have you at the edge of your seat the whole time. Because of its compelling scenes and well-drawn characters, I finished this book in just one sitting.

First Responder is a story of Karen, a vampire hunter, and Dr. Stevens who is a vampire but has issues within himself. His victims are mostly hopeless people and from this perspective, he thought of himself as righteous and not evil. Dr. Stevens’ encounter with Karen is one of the highlights of the story as the two are the main characters with different objectives. The emergence of wolves at the end quite surprised me and I got to admit I love it. I highly recommend this book with each of the five stars!

I was intrigued by the author’s talent for storytelling in this book. You can tell that the author is a passionate and talented writer. His attention to the tiniest details of the imagery makes the whole novel easy to picture in the mind’s eye that reading feels like watching a film. James did his homework on the history of his subject and it’s great to see that this book opens our eyes to a different version of vampires.

The book will take you to a great action adventure of these EMTs, and a doctor who sought out and minded their own business until such time that one of them must be stopped. I was heavily impressed at how well this book was written. Indeed, James Summers once again proved his ingenuity with this insane masterpiece.

A page-turner with both mind and muscle. Its thrills and intrigue are offered up with an equal dose of religion and scientific heft. It carries you along as it makes you reconsider the well-worn facts about vampires and wolves you thought you understood.

A dedicated EMT, a doctor, and some other characters I had a blast reading as they fight and battle against each other for survival.

Read with care. This book contains trigger warnings that may be disturbing to some. Despite its tenterhook experience, First Responder is an inspiration because it portrays bravery. I strongly recommend this one. The ending was surprising. There were a lot of murders and it was sure a lot of fun to find out the murderer. Highly recommended!

James Summers transports you to a world of his invention where monsters, dark magic, and the struggle to survive in an apocalyptic era become the highlight of this book. Through the thrilling existence of Dr. Stevens, Anthony, Karen, Lisa, and the rest of the characters and the timely appearance of the wolves, bloodshed is everywhere.

The action transformed First Responder into a breathtakingly appealing world of speculative fiction.

James has once again stunned us with his newly created plot and characters with a sense of survival that propels the flow of the story. With its meticulously designed intelligible dialogues, the plot is so easy to imagine that reading is like watching a film.

It was such a heart-thumping experience for me reading this series and I had to wonder just how much blood to be spilled before revenge is fully realized.

This book teaches us that beyond the real world, the undead is living among us, and causes tribulation and trouble in our land. Yet, we don’t lose hope because we also have heroes such as Karen who are willing to sacrifice their lives to save humanity from peril.

First Responder offers a perspective into the minds of these vampires to control power by force, and delves deep into the human psyche, pushing the characters to their fates either by accident or murder, unearthing that sometimes, what drives humanity is our very own darkness. I highly recommend this book with each of the five stars!

James Summers takes us on a whirlwind of survival, action, and drama through the lives of these villains and protagonists.

Father Wayne’s minor role in the story intrigues the readers' minds, especially their confrontation with Dr. Stevens. It’s a novel that is less than 300 pages and you’ll be sad to see it come to an end. With its length, this one is perfect for regular readers. He was able to bring life to every character, and even from the first page, I was amazed at how he placed each character, setting, and event while also placing a bit of humor throughout the pages. The book details a lot of things that would leave you feeling satiated. This is, without a doubt, a must-read that will appeal to a wide range of people.

Readers will find it easy to sympathize with Karen as she takes her job seriously. Skilled and passionate, Karen became the ultimate main character of this book as she saves people, hunts vampires, and also struggles with herself.

I love every narrated action scene, such as the murders, the weather, the confrontations, and the conversations. It gives readers a sense of connection with the characters, making it easy to bond and feel a kinship towards the main characters.

One thing I would say to the author, James Summers knows how to leave readers utterly speechless with his jaw-dropping scenes. I was floored by the truth that was teased but never fully explored until the end leaving the readers with beautiful cliffhangers that foretold more to come.

An enthralling and exciting novel from a talented author. To anyone who enjoys vampire novels with exhilarating characters, I challenge you to read chapter one and not be enthralled by the writing. Isn’t it impossible not to be enthralled by it? We don’t frequently come across a book with a story that can both move you to your core and stun you with amazing writing. A novel like

First Responder can’t be loved or hated because of its beautiful prose. I’ll just say, James Summers, you did a fantastic job because just when you think you’ve got the end in your mind, the author throws in unexpected twists and turns like crazy. Definitely a great read that comes highly recommended by me.

First Responder’s plot and characters are outstanding. They were so well-thought-out and well-developed. The story is at once dramatic, action-filled, and sublime.

Locals in the city were terrified by the horrific acts brought by these monsters. And it’s up to Karen and the rest of the EMTs to expand their territory and protect people from becoming food to the vampires.

Overall, the story is twisted beautifully in unexpected ways. The action is non-stop with a bit of drama and romance. There’s nothing I dislike about the novel, and I could tell this book is written with passion and skill. I’m glad to rate this book 5/5 stars. Highly recommended!
