Whew boy! LJ’s wildly sexy Rough Riders series, with its hunky, dominating, pant-inducing, studlicious cowboys, makes me smile, laugh, cry, and fan myself in utter erotic glee every single time. Kane McKay is another yummy, to die (and drop panties) for hero, and he and strong, independent lawyer Ginger are pure fire together. Raising Kane is another smokin’ hot, hawt, HOT read and one of my favorites of the series.
I just loved Kane’s sweet and soft side and the way he was so nurturing, caring, and protective of Ginger and her son Hayden, but then all alpha, dominating, and demanding in the bedroom...YOWZA! Kane joins his twin Kade from Tied Up, Tied Down for my favorite McKay man.
It’s an entertaining, wickedly erotic read that’s emotional, funny, touching, yet deliciously raunchy with a hero who’s equally tender and dominating, a heroine who’s stubborn, strong, and genuine, and an adorable kid who adds to the story, rather than detracts. There’s plenty of nekkid fun, naughty rope play, and scorching hot sex, but there’s also lots of heart, which is what makes this series so fantastic. Big 5 sweet, studtastic stars!

Can there be too much sex in an erotic romance? Uh...sorry to say, but yes, when it keeps the story from developing. Now don't get me wrong, no one can write an erotic scene quite like Lorelei James (her descriptions, the dirty dialogue...), but in Raising Kane, I thought it was a tad too much of a good thing. It got to the point that I (horrors) thought about skimming the umpteenth scene of Kane and his lady lawyer lover Ginger goin' at it. Yes, I thought that LJ got the point across quite well that Kane and Ginger were one smokin' hot, dirty, can't-keep-their-hands-off-each-other couple, but whew, I sure was glad when they came up for air and the story started to develop. Maybe it was the placement of the scenes--fairly early in the book--or maybe it was something else (I didn't really connect with Ginger) but I just didn't totally feel the romance in this one. I think my problem was with Ginger--I think she took the rehabilitated Kane (wasn't he a man-whore loser in the previous books?) a little too much for granted.
Kane--just add a goatee to him...
The plot--37-year-old single mom, tall, curvy redhead Ginger Paulson moves back home to Wyoming to help take care of her handicapped retired judge father and to take over his law practice. She feels her 8 year-old son could use a male influence in his life so she signs him up for the Little Buddies mentoring program. He's paired up with 37-year-old former bad boy-looking-to-turn-his-life-around Kane (aka "Buck") McKay, a hot-looking, studly cowboy if ever there was one. Kane is attracted to Ginger, but it's hands-off his Little Buddy's mama. But when Ginger injures herself in a fall, who's going to look after her and her father and young son? It's Kane to the rescue. Will Kane and the gun-shy Ginger be able to control the attraction that's been brewing between them for 2 years? Can Ginger give up some control and follow Kane's commands in the bedroom? Can Ginger and Kane have a future beyond their obvious chemistry in the bedroom?
Ginger...
Sex, sex, and more sex--that's Ginger and Kane. These two were insatiable, and did practically everything possible sexually (except a ménage). Kane awakened the sleeping sexual giant within Ginger! Yes, these scenes were predictably hot, but after a while I craved some story. When LJ finally got around to it, it became a much better, more well-rounded read. They faced a few problems (his reputation and feelings of not being good enough for Ginger; her jealousy, her refusal to ask for help when she needed it, and her taking Kane for granted just a bit), their backgrounds were explored a bit more, and the story ventured out of the bedroom a little. Yes, there was a predictible plot point that I saw coming a mile away (antibiotics + the Pill + lots of sex = uh-oh), but LJ had to do something to make Ginger realize the intensity of her feelings for Kane.
Kane was a real sweetheart--I can't believe Ginger didn't hog-tie this thoughtful, sexy stud and never let him get away! LJ gave Kane a complete character makeover. The man whore from Cowgirl Up and Ride was replaced with a more mature, (but still sexy) husband worthy (and great dad material) man who not only loved her, but her son and father. Now where was she going to find a better man than him?
So even though Ginger wasn't my favorite heroine, and the plot wasn't all that complicated, Raising Kane still has enough going for it to recommend. There's some typically great storytelling and raunchy dialogue, some smokin' hot sex scenes, there's some catching up with the McKay clan...and oh yes, there's Kane...and more Kane. That was enough for me, and I'm sure it will be for fans of the Rough Riders series. 4 stars

3 1/2 stars (Technically, this is the same rating I gave (to?) Shoulda Been A Cowboy, but I liked this book better so I'm rounding my rating up to 4 stars.)

This ladies is my Kane McKay *sigh*

Did I read this book right? Because to me not only was it my second fav in the series but there wasn't the tell tale major bust up that traditionally happens about 3/4 ways through the book before the love declarations.
Kade and Kane were by far my favs. Their stories were unique to the other McKay books. No niggling families or grumpy dads, just hot rockin' sex that made me tremble in my cowgirl boots (and yes I do own a pair - in fact, I wore them today)
Ginger - what a trooper. Single mum, carer to her father and a full time lawyer. Yet somehow managed to sneak a full blown love affair in on the side that will rival the ages.
What I really like in particular about these books in the age of the characters (but to be honest I mostly forget their just characters). Kane and Ginger were 37. Alot of books have a tendency to make their characters in their 20's. There is also always a real story line behind all that raunchy sex.
There are so many more cousins in the wonderful family that I am dying to read about! The series is truly unique and in a league of its own.
Once again a big 5 +++ stars.

There's not much to review, so this will be short.
Kane "Buck" McKay has been trying for years to drop his bad boy reputation. He's cut down on the boozing, stopped skirt-chasing and even signed up to be a mentor to a Little Buddy named Hayden. Unfortunately for him, Hayden's mom, Ginger Paulson, attracts him like flame to a moth, and that's against the program's rules. When she's laid up after a ice-fueled slip down a set of stairs, Kane agrees to help take care of her, her elderly father and Hayden while she heals up.
And, well, that's it. That's what happens. From the get-go they admit their mutual attraction. They have lots of sex starting early in the book and continuing throughout. Neither is pushing the other away or avoiding commitment. They don't use condoms so it must be True Love.
In short - the book completely lacked conflict. There's nothing these two overcome that has them grow as characters. I mean, I guess Ginger learns to rely on someone other than herself, but that is not much of a character arc to speak of. The writing's technically sound, the dialog natural, but the book lacks purpose. The protagonists begin and end the book as the same people, only married and knocked up.
I liked it, I read it in one sitting, but the lack of urgency or growth really made the sex boring. I don't want to just be a voyeur. I need a good reason to watch people bone. /meh

i cannot recommend these rough rider books highly enough. you've got sweet, sexy, dominant cowboys with hot little sassy women that keep them in line, what's not to love.
this is # 9, there are also 3 other books that are connected and i don't have a bad thing to say about any of them. or the other 2 books that i've read by lorelei james for that matter.
i loved kane and ginger, was so happy to see kane get his! and sweet little hayden.
the only question i had was, why did lorelei clarify at the beginning of the book that this takes place between books 7 and 8. it didn't seem to make a difference in the overall timeline of the book. i don't think it made reference to anything that would have even drawn that to my attention or made me think it was out of place.
and wow, cannot wait for jessie and brandt's story next. loved the set up for that. i think it comes out in november. then after that, i think we get chase, then tell. keep them coming.

Woohoo, giddy-up! And it's another winner. It's hard to not love these dark haired, blue-eyed, silver tongued cowboys, with their bad boy charms both in and out of bed. Kane you sexy devil! Love it!

Kane McKay is tired of living in the shadow of his former hell-raising lifestyle. He wants to move on with his life, grow up and settle down. He even knows who he wants to settle down with - sexy single mom Ginger Paulson. The problem is Ginger's eight year old son Hayden is Kane's Little Buddy and he is not supposed to have a relationship with a mom in the program that connects father-less young boys with an adult male mentor.
Ginger slips and falls down a flight of stairs, causing a hurt shoulder and ankle. Kane volunteers to help her with Hayden and her wheelchair bound father while she recovers, despite her reluctance to rely on anyone else. Once Ginger has sexy cowboy Kane within arms reach, she finally gets the courage to let him know she wants him and has for some time. Kane can't resist finally getting to have Ginger where he wants her - in bed nekkid with him in control. They have to take things easy at first because of her injuries but once she heals, Kane takes command with no holds barred. Let's just say Kane has rope and knows how to use it.
Kane and Ginger's sexual chemistry is combustible but he wants more than just sex. He suggests they keep their relationship quiet at first because of Hayden and the Little Buddy program. However, Kane embarks on a campaign to win Ginger for his own with all of his sexy cowboy charm and his skillful silver tongue.
Kane and Ginger's story was hot, sexy and sweet! Kane was such a wonderful man, he helped Ginger with her son and father and basically just tried to take care of her since she was always taking care of everyone but herself. Plus he was dominant and very sexy during their love scenes. Kane admired Ginger's strength instead of being threatened by it, he appreciated the way she cared for her son and father. He was a little self-conscious of his lack of education compared to Ginger's job as a lawyer but she convinces him that she thinks the world of the caring man he is and stuff like that doesn't matter. Ginger was an admirable person, she worked hard to be a good mom and daughter. She admires Kane and appreciates him for the caring man he is today and doesn't judge him based on his past the way some do.
As you can tell, I loved the story and though Kane was an amazing hero. He and Ginger make a great couple, I really enjoyed seeing them find love together since they were both lonely. Kane was also wonderful with her son and father, he will be a great Dad. Raising Kane was a sexy, sweet, hot and emotional entry into this great series.
There is no M/M or ménage in this book. It does contain hot nekkid mattress dancing, oral scenes in the shower and various other places, a little bondage and anal plus some light spanking just to liven things up.

Well, I really enjoyed this one. It just had a sweetness throughout that was exactly what I wanted to read right now.
Kane McKay has been Hayden Paulson's 'big buddy' for two years. Ginger, Hayden's mom, is a gorgeous, amazonian red-head that Kane's had the hots for since day 1. She's felt the same but they've hidden it really well.
The story starts with her falling down the steps of her office and injuring herself badly enough that she can't take care of her son and invalid father. So, Kane steps in to sleep on the bottom bunk in the kid's room and help out.
Inevitably, sex ensues.
I really like this series for several reasons. I love the McKays and how James presents them. They're not whitewashed. They've got plenty of flaws, but they're totally lovable. None of them are perfection and I like that.
I also like the 'slice of life' aspect. We catch up with the whole clan and get an idea of what's going on, but it's all about the lead couple. And what goes on with them is often just falling in love while dealing with daily life.
Admittedly, I get a bit squeamish about some of the sex. I'm not a fan of anilingus or domineering BJs, but I can roll my eyes and skim those parts and still get a really nice romance.
Maybe Ridley's review lowered my expectations, but I really loved this one. It was funny and very touching and a pleasurable few hours of reading.
PS: I suspect this book was written before All Jacked Up -- or at least mostly written -- because I see how it fits before AJU timeline-wise. For instance, Keeley doesn't seem to be married, India's only just pregnant with her second and all the others are just barely pregnant as well. The question is, why was AJU released prior? Maybe the answer will be in the next book?

So if anyone were to ask me if I could choose any of LL McKay men which one would it be? My reply would be seriously how can you ask me that, that would be like asking which one of my kids I love more!
Raising Kane is a great addition to the RR series, if I had any complaints at all it would be that it wasn't long enough, but truth be told I feel that way after all of her books. I just never want them to end it's like a soap. I can seriously reread them and never tire of any of them.

Oh My, where to start. I do not know how Lorelei does it. The story in this book is not what amazes me, it was the love and emotion in this book I thought was totally amazing. How she can take a simple story and make me feel it so amazing, well that is amazing in itself.
I loved everything about this book. Kane was sooo dam sexy, hot, and caring. I love that he had eye's only for Ginger. The sex/ love scenes again were of the charts HOT!
Lorelei has became one of my top favorite authors and I can hardly wait for the next book to come out.

Ever since Kane began cleaning up his act and becoming responsible in Tied Up, Tied Down, I've wondered what was going to happen to him, how he was going to get his happily ever after. Same goes for Ginger, especially after Branded As Trouble when Indy was jealous of the hot lawyer talking to Colt. So this book was the perfect remedy to my curiosity.
I wouldn't say that this was the best book of the series but it was definitely a good installment. It was great to see how Kane interacted with Ginger, with Hayden, with Dash, with his cousins, especially Colt, and with his brother. There were all kinds of interesting dynamics with those different groupings and they all made for an interesting story. But it was also Ginger's interactions with the people around her (Hayden, Dash, Kane, the McKay wives) that made the book interesting. Especially because she was so stubborn and strong-willed and it was good to see her forced to ask people for help.
Like I said, this was a good book and I'm glad I read it. There were some predictable things (hello, pregnancy!) but they didn't really detract from the story, I think.
I liked the little side parts with Brandt and Jessie and it gave a good intro to the relationship that they are going to build on in Cowgirls Don't Cry, Rough Riders book 10. Although, Jessie frustrated me in this one and I felt bad for poor Brandt when she rejected him.
Anyway, yeah, great book and I can't wait to read the next one.

another 5 star book from Ms James! I've wanted to see Kane get his HEA since he is introduced in his twin brothers book and I wasn't disappointed! Ginger is the perfect wman for him!

I'm always a bit disappointed with Lorelei James. She has a large following but her writing style just doesn't hit the spot for me no matter how good her premises and characters are.
This is one of those example. I loved the characters. I loved the premise, conflicts and details of the plot. I especially like the inclusion of the "little buddies" program. There was so much good here. So so so much good. And yet, it just didn't hit the spot. I didn't eat it up, and I couldn't get sucked into the story. I just can't get into Lorelei James, and it's not for lack of trying.
Obviously, I have a bias rating based on the fact that I can't get into this book. But understand that this is nothing new, it always seems to be the case with this series. But what doesn't work for me might work for you so if the blurb sounds good to you give the book a try. It's a really dense plot involving a lot of different issues. You might find a love for the book and Lorelei James that is so far out of reach for me.
That all being said ... I started book 10 last night. How does that sort of thing happen? Well, in this case it was that we see Brandt and Jessie in this book and I was curious to see how they would end up together. I'll probably also read book 11 because "♥ Sam ♥ ~S2~They call me, Slam Bam" recommended it, and I don't take such a recommendation lightly.
So at the end of the day, I'm not hugely satisfied by the books I read in this series ... but that doesn't seem to stop me from coming back to try again.

OMG I loved this one!!
Kane and Red(Ginger) were freaking AMAZING together!!
I loved all the new and old characters returning, meeting some of the other McCays was so good!!
The only thing that annoyed me was that it was the 9th book, but it was before Keely and Jack... But that's all right..
Cant wait for the next book.... i only hope November come fast!!!

I wasn’t sure I would like Raising Kane at all, and I actually read it after finishing the rest of the series. I didn’t like Kane’s twin brother’s story, and Kane himself is a bit of an abrasive lout the first four or five books of the series. But, I should have trusted James more—she redeems Kane quiet nicely, and I truly believed that he had repented for his earlier mistakes. In fact, he’s been doing a bit of penance for the last several years—living isolated in his trailer, doing the crap jobs around the ranch, and participating in the Little Buddies program to mentor boys. This is how he meets Ginger, a statuesque lawyer and her son. He’s attracted to her, but feels out of her league and also wants to stay within the ethical boundaries of the program. This all changes when he puts on his white knight suit after Ginger injures herself. I always love curvy heroines, and I really appreciate when authors craft heroines who reflect the diversity female body types. Ginger is tall and stacked, and Kane loves that about her—I liked that he was openly lusting after her rather than suddenly coming to appreciate her charms. Because Ginger is a bit of a control freak in her everyday life, Kane quickly figures out that she needs an avenue where she can surrender control—to him. And lots of five alarm fire love scenes follow, but this is also a really sweet story about a cowboy who finds a family of his own and realizes what he’s been missing. Headed straight for my keeper shelf! [This story is intended for mature readers and includes all sorts of graphic love scenes—wear your heat proof gloves while reading!]

The rough riders series is set around the McKay family and their ranches. The McKay family is made up of lots and lots of Alpha Cowboys with some VERY raunchy habits. They all have similar names (Incredibly confusing...I can never remember who is married to who!) and all are high-handed and hardheaded. Raising Kane is book 9. These books can be read as stand-alone, but I recommended that you don’t. Kane, for example, was introduced in one of the very early books and I think you need to read the background to truly appreciate the change in this Cowboy.
Kane used to be a party boy. All he cared about was ranching, boozing and sleeping with lots of women. This all changed when all his cousins and brother started to settle down and Kane didn’t have anyone to play with. To pass the time Kane gets involved with the Little Buddies programme; a group of men who provide moral guidance to little boys with no male role model (already I was half in lust with this man :D) Ginger Paulson is the mother of one of Kane’s little buddies Hayden. Sparks have always flown between these two but he doesn’t want her to think he is a complete man-whore who values chasing women over helping her son. When Ginger takes a tumble down a flight of stairs in icy conditions and ends up laid up, Kane stays at her house to take care of her, Hayden and her disabled father Dash. Pretty soon, the sparks turn into a raging inferno and these two end up getting it on anywhere and anytime.
Shockingly I loved this book. I am a humungous fan of Lorelei James so am very much biased here! The love story was already there from page one; there was no chance meeting and longing looks because these two already knew each other and fancied the pants off each other. Both were just idiots. Ginger didn’t want to jeopardise the relationship between her son and the man he idolised because every relationship she had ever known had turned to shit. Kane didn’t want to jeopardise his relationship with Hayden because he didn’t consider himself good enough for Ginger. When they actually had a conversation (shocking for characters in a love story I know) they realised that the attraction was mutual and if it didn’t all work out, it wouldn’t be the end of the world. So they decided to enjoy themselves and have some very hot sex. Which they did. Continually! In every book I have read in this book there have been suggestions of BDSM. The males are always in charge, generally there will be restraints and there will be complete submission from the women folk. Now don’t get me wrong, one of the many reasons I love this series is this continual theme but, in this book, I felt that Kane was a little ashamed of his sexual preferences and I felt a little sorry for him which made me enjoy the scenes a little less. Ginger is more than happy with the way things are but he seemed to think that it was just another reason he wasn’t good enough for her. The sex scenes where he isn't being "rough" are smoking hot and allow you to see the chemistry between the two leads.
I liked Ginger. She was a strong character who knew what she wanted and, once she made up her mind, went for Kane whole-heartedly. Kane’s character was the one that needed work. My heart bled for the kind-hearted cowboy who had no one because they all refused to see how much he had changed. Ginger even had to defend him to his own mother, which just made me like her even more! He didn’t think he was good enough for Ginger in any aspect of his life. His work was hard, time consuming and didn’t require much brains, he barely made it through college, he lives in a trailer and, finally, he likes to tie women up and spank them, which makes him an animal. He loves Ginger and also he adores Hayden but to him, being part of their family is something he can only dream about. There were points in this book where I wanted to slap him silly because, as soon as he took one-step forward in the relationship, he managed to leap two back. When Colt finally stages his “intervention” and makes him see that he is actively ruining his chances of happiness I could have kissed him and he is the character I like the least in the whole series. One of the best parts of the whole book is Kane’s relationship with Hayden. This is a little boy who has never known his daddy (who, by the way, is a total douche) and only ever had a role model in the form of his disabled Grandfather. Kane starts the story as only his big buddy; a man who takes him out a couple of times a month to give him some idea of what being a man is all about. As Kane involves himself further into their lives he becomes more than just a moral compass and has to deal with the added responsibilities of being a father. When he states he wants to adopt him and Hayden starts to call him dad I cried.
This didn’t run as a typical love story to me. There was no real external conflict, they were all internal ones that the characters had to solve themselves. Both characters had HEAPS of baggage and that was the cause of most of their issues. I thought it was a lovely, realistic story of how two mid-thirties characters might finally find their way to settling down.

One of my favorites of the series, which is saying alot because I LOVE all of them. Being a single mom I can relate to Ginger the most of all the McKay women, she's strong and somewhat a control freak. I actually learned alot about myself reading this story.
NOTE: This book actually takes place between Book # 7 Shoulda Been A Cowboy and Book # 8 All Jacked Up. I would read Raising Kane before All Jacked Up, ater All Jacked Up, read Slow Ride (Free short story about Keely's wedding reception) then Cowgirls Dont' Cry. It really doesn't mess up the stories, but I am just anal about reading in chronological order =)

Estupenda entrega de esta serie de vaqueros en el Wyoming actual que me tiene enganchada. El McKay de turno es Kane, que tuvo una juventud bastante desenfrenada, pero que ahora mira con envidia la estabilidad familiar de su hermano y sus primos. Su interés romántico, la abogada Ginger, madre soltera y con padre dependiente, no tiene tiempo ni para relaciones ni para rollos. Se gustan, se ayudan, y tienen escenas muy hot, claro, antes de acabar confesándose lo mucho que se quieren. Novela con niño, lo cual resta algo de interés para mí.

This is one of my High 5, Low 5 reviews. The High Five are five things that have impressed me or that I really enjoyed, and the Low Five are five things that had me shaking my head or raise my brows in a less admiring way.
Raising Kane is the ninth book of Lorelei James’ Rough Riders series and features another one of the hot McKay brothers and cousins: Kane. He’s the twin brother of Kade, who starred in book #4 Tied Up, Tied Down and who is one of my all time favorite book boyfriends. Kane always was sort of Kade’s evil twin, giving the McKay men their bad boy image. But the death of one of their cousins has changed him and now he’s let his wild hair down.
Kane’s love interest, Ginger, also has quite some history, although this is the first time in the series we learn about that. So when she and Kane get together they both have some issues to overcome. But how perfect can two people be for each other? Really, it's hard not to love this independent woman and her sexy cowboy!
High 5
• Very erotic read!
If you’ve never read one of Lorelei James’ books before you’re definitely missing out on some of the very best smutty love scenes in the genre of erotic romance! As many books as Ms James has written yet, the sex scenes never become repetitive and are always scorching hot. Plus she knows perfectly how to convince me of the beauty of a dominant male in the bedroom (not that I need much convincing *ahum*). Her McKay men all have a sexual controlling nature, Kane is no exception, and that makes for super hot scenes that scorch your panties in a blink of an eye! But the appeal of it all is, that these erotic scenes all have a natural feel to them. They fit in the story smoothly without the book becoming an accumulation of one hot scene after the other for the sake of being erotic. No, the love scenes do each play a role in the relationship development. So, we get the best of two worlds.
• Strong, amiable main characters
Both Ginger and Kane are characters you can’t help but love. Ginger is a strong, independent woman who takes care of her invalid father and young son without ever being selfish. She does have some difficulties to trust a man and surrender to her feelings for Kane, but never to a point that her doubts become annoying. Kane is almost too good to be true. He’s hot for Ginger but acts completely selfless to win her trust and out of respect for her and her son and father. And Ginger does notice this:
To be honest, at this point I couldn’t help but think that his behavior was a little bit too perfect! Good thing he became more demanding and less selfless in the bedroom shortly after that ;). Also, he showed some insecurities, although not too openly, about being less smart and sophisticated than Ginger, he being a cowboy, she an attorney. These tiny things saved him from becoming boringly perfect or perfectly boring ;).
A strong characteristic of Ginger’s and Kane’s relationship was imo the fact that they were friends before lovers (thanks to the Little Buddy program that brought Kane and Gingers son Hayden together). Plus, both protags are in their thirties and leading a ‘mature’ life, and they have to deal with daily little burdens. Somehow this makes their love story very natural and their relationship to develop like a real one would.
• Great writing
Ms James’ writing is flowing and her words are easily evoking the images she wants us to see. I often felt as if the characters were there in the room with me and I could feel what they felt and join in the action any minute, *grin*, like in the next scene:
Another strong characteristic are the dialogues, which are a pleasure to read. Not only because they are quick and funny but vibrant as well. This made the interaction between the H/h very appealing.
• Subtle humor
I enjoy Lorelei James’ sense of humor which is already present in the naughty and double-meaning titles of the Rough Riders books. The title ‘Raising Kane’ makes you think of ‘raising hell’ but also of the biblical brothers Abel and Cain, which adds a slightly more serious note to it.
While telling her stories, sometimes the way Ms James phrases things makes me chuckle, sometimes other parts make me laugh out loud, like this one (which refers to Kane changing his name to Buck in book #4):
The laughs and chuckles always come unexpectedly; it never feels like the author tries to be funny to all cost, which brings the best smiles.
• Rich, real secondary cast
One of the strong features of this whole series, even when you read one of the books as a standalone, is the extensive cast of secondary characters. None of the couples are isolated from their surroundings, but always have strong supporting characters in their lives. In Raising Kane there’s not only the McKay family which we can follow throughout the series, but also new characters, like Ginger’s dad and son, Hayden, and they all feel like real people. Although the presence of the kid sometimes causes some interruptions of the sexy scenes - which is never something I’m too thrilled about - I must admit that his and Kane’s relationship was very endearing and sweet.
Low 5
I’m going to keep these short, because they really were only tiny niggles.
• Lack of angst
I like my romances a wee bit more intense. This ninth installment of the series was nearly angst free, which made it a much lighter read than the other books. It could’ve used some sort of misunderstanding or emotional drama perhaps.
• Goatees and oral scenes don’t match
I hardly swoon over men with permanent facial hair, although I can appreciate a five o’clock scruff very much. Kane has a goatee, which is fine when I’m not reminded too often of it. But it kept turning up, especially in some oral scenes and in relation to juices getting caught in it. Meh.
• Too tough?
I like my heroines to be tough and independent, and I loved Ginger for that, but at one point I wondered if she could really be that tough. Very shortly after she’s recovered from an injured shoulder, Kane ties her hands behind her back for quite a long time, without her uttering a single complaint, not during the scene nor afterwards.
• More please!
I regretted it when the story was over, maybe because I was expecting a plot twist or some sort of explosive climax in the story arc. But that probably wouldn’t have done this couple any justice, given their quiet, solid relationship building. I still would’ve liked to read a little bit more about them.
• Unfinished second storyline
There was another storyline in which Kane’s cousin Brandt takes the lead. He’s in love with his brother’s widow Jessie but she only sees him as a brother. It’s not the first time Ms James adds a second storyline to one of her books, for example I really enjoyed Carter’s in book #2, but this time it’s not a completed storyline, although it looked like it was going to be at first. It’s more of a set up for a next book in the series, while it takes up pretty much space. We were left hanging and therefore these parts felt out of place.
Those were my five highs and five lows. I really enjoyed Raising Kane! It’s a highly erotic and heartwarming love story with great main characters. Although I missed some emotional drama and would’ve liked one or two heartbreaking moments, this was still a fabulous installment in the Rough Riders series. It had great dialogues, wonderful writing, loveable protags and excellent sexual tension. It’s a sexy and sweet romance that had me purring while I was reading it. And now I’m jonesing for the next book, Cowgirls Don’t Cry, that will be released in November. Yippeeh!
*Although this is the ninth book in the series, it can be read as a standalone. Part of the extensive McKay clan does make an appearance, but their role is secondary to Kane’s and Ginger’s love story. For a better understanding of where Kane is coming from though, reading a few of the previous books is recommended, especially the book in which he’s introduced, Tied Up, Tied Down.*

These tiny things saved him from becoming boringly perfect or perfectly boring ;).
A strong characteristic of Ginger’s and Kane’s relationship was imo the fact that they were friends before lovers (thanks to the Little Buddy program that brought Kane and Gingers son Hayden together). Plus, both protags are in their thirties and leading a ‘mature’ life, and they have to deal with daily little burdens. Somehow this makes their love story very natural and their relationship to develop like a real one would.
• Great writing
Ms James’ writing is flowing and her words are easily evoking the images she wants us to see. I often felt as if the characters were there in the room with me and I could feel what they felt and join in the action any minute, *grin*, like in the next scene:
“Kane’s moist lips teased her ear and followed her jawline. A delicious slow, warm shudder worked through her entire body. He brushed his mouth across hers. Once. Then he eased back slightly to gauge her reaction.
Unconsciously, Ginger licked her lips.
A half growl rumbled from his chest and Kane captured her mouth and he kissed her.
Man, had he ever kissed her. A tongue-plundering, lip-gliding, hot, wet and conquering kiss. She figured she’d have a real screaming orgasm if she kept kissing Kane McKay, so she kept her lips locked on his. Lord, his kisses alone made her dizzy with desire. Drunk on his wicked sensuality.
The kiss ebbed and flowed, relaxed and intensified, and seemed to go on forever, but not nearly long enough.”
Another strong characteristic are the dialogues, which are a pleasure to read. Not only because they are quick and funny but vibrant as well. This made the interaction between the H/h very appealing.
• Subtle humor
I enjoy Lorelei James’ sense of humor which is already present in the naughty and double-meaning titles of the Rough Riders books. The title ‘Raising Kane’ makes you think of ‘raising hell’ but also of the biblical brothers Abel and Cain, which adds a slightly more serious note to it.
While telling her stories, sometimes the way Ms James phrases things makes me chuckle, sometimes other parts make me laugh out loud, like this one (which refers to Kane changing his name to Buck in book #4):
“The great experiment with changing his name to something completely different from his twin brother’s had lasted until the night he’d picked up a brunette in a bar outside of Gillette. Her continual cries of “Fuck me, Buck” and “Buck me, Buck” and “Suck me, Buck” were enough to make him ditch the name altogether—not that it’d really caught on.”
The laughs and chuckles always come unexpectedly; it never feels like the author tries to be funny to all cost, which brings the best smiles.
• Rich, real secondary cast
One of the strong features of this whole series, even when you read one of the books as a standalone, is the extensive cast of secondary characters. None of the couples are isolated from their surroundings, but always have strong supporting characters in their lives. In Raising Kane there’s not only the McKay family which we can follow throughout the series, but also new characters, like Ginger’s dad and son, Hayden, and they all feel like real people. Although the presence of the kid sometimes causes some interruptions of the sexy scenes - which is never something I’m too thrilled about - I must admit that his and Kane’s relationship was very endearing and sweet.

I’m going to keep these short, because they really were only tiny niggles.
• Lack of angst
I like my romances a wee bit more intense. This ninth installment of the series was nearly angst free, which made it a much lighter read than the other books. It could’ve used some sort of misunderstanding or emotional drama perhaps.
• Goatees and oral scenes don’t match
I hardly swoon over men with permanent facial hair, although I can appreciate a five o’clock scruff very much. Kane has a goatee, which is fine when I’m not reminded too often of it. But it kept turning up, especially in some oral scenes and in relation to juices getting caught in it. Meh.
• Too tough?
I like my heroines to be tough and independent, and I loved Ginger for that, but at one point I wondered if she could really be that tough. Very shortly after she’s recovered from an injured shoulder, Kane ties her hands behind her back for quite a long time, without her uttering a single complaint, not during the scene nor afterwards.
• More please!
I regretted it when the story was over, maybe because I was expecting a plot twist or some sort of explosive climax in the story arc. But that probably wouldn’t have done this couple any justice, given their quiet, solid relationship building. I still would’ve liked to read a little bit more about them.
• Unfinished second storyline
There was another storyline in which Kane’s cousin Brandt takes the lead. He’s in love with his brother’s widow Jessie but she only sees him as a brother. It’s not the first time Ms James adds a second storyline to one of her books, for example I really enjoyed Carter’s in book #2, but this time it’s not a completed storyline, although it looked like it was going to be at first. It’s more of a set up for a next book in the series, while it takes up pretty much space. We were left hanging and therefore these parts felt out of place.
Those were my five highs and five lows. I really enjoyed Raising Kane! It’s a highly erotic and heartwarming love story with great main characters. Although I missed some emotional drama and would’ve liked one or two heartbreaking moments, this was still a fabulous installment in the Rough Riders series. It had great dialogues, wonderful writing, loveable protags and excellent sexual tension. It’s a sexy and sweet romance that had me purring while I was reading it. And now I’m jonesing for the next book, Cowgirls Don’t Cry, that will be released in November. Yippeeh!
*Although this is the ninth book in the series, it can be read as a standalone. Part of the extensive McKay clan does make an appearance, but their role is secondary to Kane’s and Ginger’s love story. For a better understanding of where Kane is coming from though, reading a few of the previous books is recommended, especially the book in which he’s introduced, Tied Up, Tied Down.*

Kane McKay was a man that almost single-handedly created the legendary bad boy image that the McKay men are known for. Yet throughout the Rough Riders series we’ve seen Kane transform himself into the man he decides he wants to be, which is more than a man known for his sexual exploits; a man who is ready for love and the responsibilities of having a family of his own....even if no one else believes that this leopard can change his spots.
Ginger Paulson is a strong and independent woman who is an attorney, a single mother, and caretaker for her disabled father. She’s got a lot on her plate and through determination, and lots of hard work she manages to successfully juggle it all without much help from anyone else. That is until she is forced to accept help after an accident has left her barely able to care for herself let alone her young son and father. Like many people who are used to having to do it all, she has a hard time accepting help from anyone else. Even if it is the man she fantasizes about.
Kane and Ginger fought their attraction to each other, despite a knock your socks off kiss they shared months ago. But Kane jumps at the chance to get closer to Ginger and try to convince her that a relationship between the two of them could be more than a good thing when she is injured and needs help.
For me Raising Kane was different than many of the other Rough Riders stories. I felt that it was a more mature love story than many of the others. Kane and Ginger are both in their mid thirties. They’ve lived life. Ginger has a son. They’ve been there and done that. Unlike several of the other books in this series….where there are obstacles to overcome (drug addiction, disabilities, an unplanned pregnancy…) there are no big dark secrets, no overblown misunderstandings, no big emotional drama or growth. In this story the hero and the heroine are both at a point in their lives where they know who they are and what they want, which is why this story felt more subdued and less intense than many of the other McKay stories. When I say that I don't mean it in a way that means the story was boring or bad or less than the others, it just seemed…..natural. Like how you would expect a real relationship to evolve, and I think that is where the beauty lies in Raising Kane. It seemed like a "real" love story.
Even though I loved Kane as a hero, I did feel that much of his character growth happened outside of his own story (little snippets in the previous Rough Riders)…and I don’t really know how I feel about that. In some respects I felt disappointed by this because the character who ended up dominating the story was Ginger, not Kane (at least IMO). Ginger is the character who had to learn to rely on others and accept love, but what about Kane? And since its supposedly Kane’s story we can’t pass over his infamously alluded to past sexual exploits. Anyone who has the pleasure of reading Lorelei James’s Rough Riders series know she writes smokin’ hot love scenes. In fact I think she is one of the best erotic romance writers out there, not just because of the loves scenes but because they are about so much more than just sex. Her love scenes are more than just numerous sex scenes inserted at certain parts in the story where it might make sense. Each and every intimate encounter has purpose and meaning to the hero and heroine’s love story…and Raising Kane is certainly no different. But shouldn’t Kane’s story be just a little bit more sexually intense/adventurous?
Because of his past and what we’ve been led to believe about him in previous RR stories I expected Kane to be more intense and demanding in the bedroom…and I guess he kinda sorta was? But in the end he didn’t really seem that much different than the other McKay men. I know he’s changed, but has he changed that much? Once or twice within the story there are a few sex toys that are referenced that Kane says he’ll use on Ginger at some point, but to my recollection he didn’t make good on those promises/threats. Not that I wanted or needed more sex scenes between the two, nor could they have been any hotter than they were, but maybe I expected him to be just a tad kinkier…..maybe. I wanted Kane to push Ginger (not just tempt her) to give up control of at least this one aspect of her life and through these moments in the story to really learn to trust and accept his love. To realize that she’s not alone and no longer has to do it all, that she has a partner who is willing to shoulder some of the burdens that she carries if she will only let him. That’s what he offers her, but I felt that she still had a hard time believing that/him, even at the end of the story. When I read in the blurb that Kane demands Ginger’s “full sexual submission” I expected him to be a more sexually demanding lover than what we’ve seen in some of the previous RR stories, and I don’t think he was. However, I also I didn’t expect him to be as passionate and compassionate a hero as he was in Raising Kane.
There are several sweet and cherishable moments that I didn’t expect from this hero and I loved that about this story. Kane’s bond with Ginger’s son is what any woman would wish for when trusting someone to help raise your child, mentor them, and provide a strong male role model. Add to that how he helps a Ginger’s father, a disabled man keep his pride, and dignity, as well as realize his importance in their newly formed family and you have one perfect sigh worthy hero.
In the end I think Raising Kane is another great addition to the McKay family and the Rough Riders series, and is definitely worth your time and money. I just wish a little more of the story would have been about Kane instead of Ginger, that Kane maybe was a little more dominant, and that the small diversions involving Brandt McKay and Jessie (which I didn’t really go into in the review but will no doubt will be a future RR story) would have been even more brief and less distracting within Kane and Ginger’s story.

p.s. while I do think Raising Kane could be read as a stand alone (more so than any of the other RR series), a reader who hasn’t read the previous stories won’t have the full benefit of experiencing the personal growth and discovery that Kane went through prior to his story in Raising Kane, at least to appreciate who he has become and his hero worthiness.

Lorelei James is quickly topping the charts of one of my favorite authors. Not only was Raising Kane a great treat it was emotional.

It was about time sexy cowboy Kane stopped his wild ways and was in it to win not only Ginger but her love. From reading the previous books in the series Kane was outta control, to see him serious and in a different light was well different. Kane not only wants Ginger but wants a family.
Absolutely loved how the story came together and turned out. Not only did Kane give his all to Ginger but her family. He fit right in and made such an impact on them. Love, love, love Kane. Lorelei James wrote him perfect. I liked the fact that even in this book you could see him growing not just as a person but also a provider to prove what he wants and to make it all happen.
This series is moving up to one of my favorite series. Then to find out there are more McKay's to read about is a major plus. Now that I am caught up on this deliciously hot series I can look forward to when Cowgirls Don't Cry is finally released. I mean who doesn't wanna ride a cowboy?

Not much plot or character development, but good fun erotic cowboy romance. It’s like eating candy.
STORY BRIEF:
Ginger is a single mother with an 8-year-old boy Hayden. Ginger was not married to Hayden’s father who died in an accident. Her father Dash is confined to a wheelchair and lives with Ginger and Hayden. Ginger took over her father’s law practice when he retired.
Kane used drink a lot and had sex with lots of women. He stopped. Now he spends time ranching and mentoring young boys in the Little Buddies program. For two years he has been Hayden’s Buddy.
The story begins with Ginger falling down the stairs at her office, causing injuries requiring a leg cast and an arm sling. Her son worries about her and calls Kane. Kane stays at Ginger’s home for several days to take care of Hayden, Dash, and Ginger while she recovers. Of course she’s unable to wash her hair, so that starts things between her and Kane in the bathroom.
REVIEWER’S OPINION:
This author has a formula and it keeps on working. She’s done many books in this Wyoming cowboy/rancher series. They’re all similar, and they’re erotically fun. The guy is ultra-macho in the bedroom “my way or no way.” The girl happily submits, follows orders, and is rewarded with multiple orgasms every time. The author writes good sex scenes, showing emotions and desires. There is rear door activity, and a little bondage and spanking.
Another positive is that the author didn’t annoy me or insult me with cheap plot devices, contrived conflicts, and stupidity. I was surprised that the author did not have the couple fight and separate which seems to be what most romance authors do. I was happy that she did something different for a change. Instead, she had some conflicts and events with others. Although, I was unsettled that the story about Brandt and Jessie was not finished - probably to be continued in a sequel. That didn’t fit well here. But it wasn’t a big problem.

Kane... Oh, Kane... Yes! God, Kane! *Looks from side to side* Sorry got a little carried away. But I can't really help myself!
Kane has has such a turnaround in this series, going from the total douche, asswipe, womanizer to, well... He's a bit older, a bit rouger, a bit sweeter, a lot more caring, and totally in love with one woman. And when he puts all his focus into taking care of her and giving in to his desires... well, that just makes me one jealous girl!
Kane has been mentoring Ginger's son for a few years as part of the Little Buddies program. And throughout this time he's been falling in love with her. She's a successful lawyer, who got pregnant out of marriage and the father of her baby was never present in their lives. She's done everything on her own. Until she falls down the stairs at her building and is left in a cast and brace and needs help. Her father is disabled and can't help her and her son is too young. So Kane steps in to the task and moves right in to her home to help her. But he moves right into her bed too!
I love the fact that they're both mature characters, they're both older, they're 37, they've had so many experiences that have shapen their outlooks on life. They know what they want. There was no doubt in Kane's mind she was the one for him. If anything she was the one a scared of it all. And the sex, well, there's not much I can say other than extremely HAWT!
But there were a lot of emotions to this story more than just their sexual chemistry. Kane truly loved her son and connected with him, cared about him and did things thinking of him. As well as for her father, who wasn't the easiest person to deal with. He truly made her see she was his princess, and there's nothing I would want more than to be in her shoes! LOL Excellent installment in the Rough Riders series and might the spot for favorite in the series, if not first then second place!

I love the fact that they're both mature characters, they're both older, they're 37, they've had so many experiences that have shapen their outlooks on life. They know what they want. There was no doubt in Kane's mind she was the one for him. If anything she was the one a scared of it all. And the sex, well, there's not much I can say other than extremely HAWT!
But there were a lot of emotions to this story more than just their sexual chemistry. Kane truly loved her son and connected with him, cared about him and did things thinking of him. As well as for her father, who wasn't the easiest person to deal with. He truly made her see she was his princess, and there's nothing I would want more than to be in her shoes! LOL Excellent installment in the Rough Riders series and might the spot for favorite in the series, if not first then second place!

Kane, Kane, Kane...
I loved his story of redemption, really I did.
When we first met him in Kade's book I thought he was a douche-bag along with Colt, but seriously? I think that Kane "Buck" Mckay really changed and for the better.
I thought he was adorable, to an extent. Don't get me wrong, there were things that seemed a little out there for me, like Kane doing ALL the chores at his place and then going over to Ginger's and doing all of hers and barely getting much sleep to then get up at the butt-crack of dawn to do it all over again? really? I don't believe it. Rancher or no rancher. Changed man or no changed man. I thought it was sweet and appealing, but in the end I felt that it made Kane seem like a push-over at times.
Other than that, I actually felt like these other sets of Mckays are a lot more interesting that the first set. And by first set, I mean all the ones with names beginning with "C".
Every time I see all the C's me thinks 'C' is for cookie... that's good enough for me, but I digress. I'm not here to talk about my love/obsession with cookies, y'all.
I just needed to say that Kane was a pretty strong and reliable and caring character that I felt for because he felt lonely after he'd changed his ways and realised that all that time spent being an idiot was a waste.

Spoiler Ahead This was book 9 in the "Rough Riders" series and I love the McKay's. When attorney Ginger Paulson falls down a flight of stairs she has no one to take care of her son or her father. That is until Kane "Buck" McKay volunteers. Kane had always been attracted to Ginger, but she was strictly off limits for him when he became Hayden's mentor in the Little Buddies program. I love reading this series and I was looking forward to reading about the hot sexy Kane. I loved both of these character's Ginger has always put everyone else first she has a lot of things going on so she lets Kane take over and she sees a different side of Kane when he is with her son and her plan to steer clear of him goes away. The sex scenes in this book were hot and Kane demands submission Ginger is not sure if she trust Kane. This was a really good book and I loved reading it. This book didn't have some really deep dark secret like some of the other books in this series and I loved how Kane has changed from the person he was in the other books. This book was well written like the other books in this series with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
