A young loner drops dead on a public street. The circumstances of his death are bizarre, bloody and deeply disturbing. Dressed in a white gown, with black make up daubed across his eyes, the victim was killed by knife with devilish precision - and yet more grisly secrets are uncovered... a plastic token is hidden in the fatal wound.
Why was the young man killed? What is the meaning of the gown and the strange method of murder? Private investigators Eva Roberts and Dan Bradley are hired to honour a young man's memory and to prevent another bloodbath. To win they must outwit a deadly mind before the sinister killer strikes again. The PIs are caught up in a race against a police investigation led by arrogant new DI Joe Hogarth... An investigation which is heading in the wrong direction...
Reputations are at stake. Friendships are on the line. Love affairs may live or die. The murderous plot of a cold dark heart goes on unseen. The killer will strike again at any time.

Hello folks, My name is Solomon Carter, and I am the author of the Roberts and Bradley PI crime thriller series, The Last Line international thriller series, the DI Hogarth Darkest series and more. I write mysteries, crime and thriller novels and more besides.
I was born in Southend, Essex and lived there for most of my life apart from eventful student days in South London. But my life in Southend was even more eventful still. I ended up working in a string of jobs including as a jobcentre clerk, a book seller, tutor for youth with low skills and low self esteem, mortgage broker, and latterly manager of a food bank which dealt with all kinds of interesting people facing all kinds of eye-opening, jaw dropping problems. Because of these ear-to-the-ground jobs the majority of my novels are set in Southend. In 2016 I moved to North Cornwall because I liked the idea of never-ending holidays - but I also write almost every single day. My aim is to write action-packed thrillers and page-turning mysteries that readers love and my hope is to get better at what I do with every book across each and every year.
I like to give away lots of free books as part of what I do. If you would like to receive some of these and get the exclusives on offer, than you're invited to join my free readers group at SolomonCarter.net. I won't spam you, just send the occassional email with news on the latest books and forthcoming freebies.

What I am good at: telling stories What I am bad at: dancing, being patient. What I love: nature, the seaside, adventures Writers I heartily recommend: Lee Child, Ian Rankin, Henning Mankell, Val McDermid, Harlan Coben, Robert Crais. Writers I need to read more of: Val McDermid, Ian Rankin, Michael Connelly and others. Other things I do beside writing: at present I like to keep my running going to balance out the sitting behind a laptop (a habit inspired by Haruki Murakami's 'What I talk about when I talk about running' - a great book). -I am currently doing surf lessons. When in Rome, as they say... -Getting out into nature as the weather allows.
I look forward to hearing from you. Until then I'll keep on writing. Or running. Or surfing. Or chasing my children around the house.
All the very best, Solomon :)
PS if you have enjoyed any of my books, I'd be honoured if you could post a review. Those reviews really do help!
So many red herrings and a good plot make me admire this author very much. This book unbelievably free was a plot twister. I have read this author before and will read more of his works. The covers to his book, let him down and tend to put off reading it. Shallow I know but it just looks grim.
Station Road. Mary (BFF, teaching asst.), & Angus McCauley (42), were hollering for an ambulance. It was too late Lewis Atkins (19, gay, Speech Master’s club member) had been gutted. DI Joe Hogarth wanted PCSO Rebecca Rawlins (25, Southend PD), to speak to Angus (Club Nerd member) about what might have happened to Lewis. Dan Bradley (PI) & Eva Roberts (PI, Dan’s partner/GF), had just added on Mark “Kid” Falborough (16, computer geek) as an apprentice.
Mr. Robert Jay (businessman, Speech Master’s club member) came to see the 3 of them. He was willing to pay them to find Lewis’ killer. Dr. Barton (pathologist) said it was a ritual killing. Georgina Oldham is Alan Merrick (46, Merrick Construction Mgt.) mistress. Strongforth Social Club. What were Lenny & PCSO Rawlins discussing? Alan had been taken into custody for the murder of Georgina & maybe Lewis Atkins. Dan had a to-do-list: Jonathan Parker (terminal cancer patient), Devon Parker (brother, PI), & Robert Jay former head of “The Ravagers”; Quill & Ink Society charity, New Cross), Southend PD. DI Joseph “Joe” Hogarth was interviewing Alan Merrick under the watchful eye of PCSO Rob Dawson, & PCSO Rawlins. Will the serial killings get solved & someone brought to justice?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.
A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written crime thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great crime thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. To be continued. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

Well this book never really held my attention from the first page. I think it's because I don't like the needy, too antagonistic Dan who completely overshadows the much better character of Eva. In fact I have a feeling that in all the Solomon Carter books the male always dominates the female. Hmm!
The story was that a man came in to hire them after discovering that a young friend of his had died on the street whilst wearing a white sheet, or something like it, and a mask, and had been slit from the throat down to his lower end, which begs the first question, not properly answered in the book, of how on earth did he manage to stagger from whence he came to die in the middle of the street whilst being sliced open right down the middle? Another hmm here I think!
I just didn't get into this story of Dan and, the much better character and more intelligent, Eva being hired by this odd man and obviously coming up against a live police investigation and getting in the way, especially now that there is a new DI on the block, Hogarth who is particularly unlikeable. I've just been racking my brains to try and remember which book I've read recently also figured a DI Hogarth in it and he was more likeable? Anyway in the end they did get their man and rescue someone else in the process, but it hadn't take long for me to work out who I thought the murderer was fairly early on in the book. And I was right!
I've read a few Solomon Carter books and he seems to write either a very good grabbing your attention book, or a one where you wondered whether now we would be a good time to pop round to the shop to get that bottle of milk, or even paint the hall. Just saying.
"Suspend belief all ye who enter here." I've read and reviewed several of Dan & Eva's adventures now, and they are great fun. As long as you are prepared to ignore all the misconceptions about how the police service actually works. This is another story that pits good versus evil, and you know you can rely on the two private investigators to deliver the goods before the police can solve it. There's always a wide range of evil characters in each book, and although Dan continues to flirt with disaster, he still comes up smelling of roses. Escapism? You bet. .
A pair of cops and private investigators reluctantly join forces to solve a troubling ritualistic murder. The cops are motivated by ambition and a desire to best their arrogant supervisor. The supervisor inexplicably seems determined to follow the wrong path. The pis have a client who doesn't trust the police to solve the murder. But the killer is clever and determined to fulfill his twisted agenda.
This was a decent read. The pacing was good and the story line interesting. The romantic relationships were more annoying than interesting and the police behaviour, especially that of Hogarth, is over the top.But all in all a good read.
A rather disturbing thriller that features grizzly murders, bullying, secret organisations, competitiveness, sexism, revenge, drug use and much more.
Well written with good pace. I confess that I had a good idea 'whodunnit' before the reveal, but I wasn't absolutely certain - there was still that element of doubt where I wondered whether there was going to be another twist ahead. There was, but it came with the motive. I'll say no more for fear of ruining the suspense for others.
Due to eye issues Alexa reads to me, a will written novel of hate, murder, romance and mystery in the London Calling series. The characters are interesting and will developed. The story line is fast moving with murder as misdirection as the main characters race to solve the mystery. I would recommend this series to readers of mysteries. Enjoy reading 🔰2021 😁
This story is part of a box set I have and it's chilling because of the reasons behind the murders. I do enjoy these private detective novels and this time, D.I. Hogarth takes part, if not in a favourable light.
I don't like to give spoilers so will just say that this tale is fast-paced with twists and surprises, and together with the plot and interesting characters, made it a compelling read.
I've thoroughly enjoyed Soloman Carter's Long Time Dying series featuring Eve Roberts and Dan Bladley and as a continuation this book, 1st in the London Calling series is just as good. I think I had an idea who the guilty party was before it was revealed - but what a reveal when it came! I found myself thinking "No don't do it!" As we do when characters on screen are about to walk into danger. This book kept me turning the pages just like the previous books I've mentioned . On to the next one!
The rating should be 4.5 stars but you're not allowed half stars. Decided to try this as a free Kindle read and enjoyed it even though I was unfamiliar with the back story to these characters. The plot was above average and the characters fully formed. An enjoyable easy read. I will read more by this author.☺
An awesome, gory mystery thriller that I enjoyed much. The story has so many twists and surprises that you won't see it coming. All in all a great read. The characters are interesting and will keep you engaged. This is a multiple perpetrators possible kind of a story. In the end the author beautifully ties everything together.
Good book and I enjoyed it. Perhaps a little slow in places, but the plot was good and great twist. Also liked the characters, but again felt slightly irritated by the bad feeling between the cop and PI. But this was a first book, and I feel sure that by the time I get to the final book, I’ll be giving it five stars. Showing a lot of promise.
The story was slow to start, but was interesting enough to get me to continue reading. Author likes using names with the letter D. Some fleshing out of the conflict between police officer and PI Dan would have been helpful.
