I’d rather not read another book that opens with the author’s dream about dead people:
Dead black people.
In a coniferous forest.
In Sweden.
The contorted faces of these dead Africans are stuck in the tree trunks.
I am torn between liking and hating this book. No doubt, this is a worthy cause – a project deserving much attention. But I have to say, it is badly executed. The way the book is written doesn’t really highlight the gravity of the situation it attempts to tackle.
I didn’t like that Henning Mankell writes a little and then fills the rest of the book with essays by Anders Wijkman and Dr. Rachel Baggaley. These essays do not belong in this book. Yes, they are well written, providing hard information about the crisis – but they belong to another book.
Nevertheless, Mankell (bless him) has done a lot for the Memory Books Project, a worthy project that gives African parents dying of AIDS an opportunity to record autobiographical accounts of their lives (in words and pictures), so that the children they leave behind will have something by which to remember them.
All in all, the book is okay but just not good enough. 2 stars because it brings its subject into focus.

“It is as if I were walking through a gallery of unfinished wood sculptures.”Apparently, "the black people whose faces can be made out among the tree trunks have died of Aids. The skin is tightly stretched over the bones of their faces. The dead people are thin, fading away, in great pain. Nowhere is there a trace of calm or resignation."

Das Motiv der Vergänglichkeit ist ein ewiges Motiv der Literatur. Doch selten ist es so einfach, so zart, so natürlich und so herzzerbrechend wie in diesem Buch.
Denn hier geht es nicht um die Leiden fiktiver Charaktere. Mankell beschreibt eine Reise nach Uganda, wo er Menschen trifft, die bald an AIDS sterben werden. So bald, dass ihre Kinder sie niemals wirklich kennen lernen werden. Deswegen schreiben diese Eltern - meist sind es Mütter - Memory Books, in denen sie all das schreiben, was sie ihren Kindern nicht mehr werden sagen können, wenn sie alt genug sind, um es zu verstehen.
Dieses Projekt, das von der Hilfsorganisation Plan International organisiert wurde, ist so schön und simpel, dass es jedem Leser das Herz brechen muss. Und wenn es die Idee an sich nicht tut, so leistet das Buch letzte Arbeit.
Denn Henning Mankell ist nicht nur einer der besten Krimiautoren der letzten Jahre, er war auch - und das spürt man auf jeder Seite seines Berichts - ein sehr reflektierter, ein engagierter Mensch, der schon früh sein Herz an den afrikanischen Kontinent verlor und Zeit seines Lebens nie aufhörte, für ihn zu kämpfen. Und so ist sein Bericht nicht nur eine Wiedergabe der Gespräche mit den Menschen. Auf diesen knapp hundert Seiten gelingt ihm viel, viel mehr: Er schafft es auf eine neue, bemerkenswerte Weise über den Tod und das Leben zu reflektieren, über Vergänglichkeit und die Gefahr dieser Krankheit, die schon Millionen das Leben gekostet hat. Er appeliert an die westliche Welt, nicht mehr die Augen zu verschließen und kritisiert die gewinnorientierte Pharmaindustrie, aber alles ohne erhobenen Zeigefinger, sondern klug und vorsichtig, zu klug und reflektiert, um einfache Antworten zu akzeptieren.
Und dann gibt es noch Christines Memory Book. Das Buch, in dem sie alles aufgeschrieben hat, was sie ihre älteste Tochter wissen lassen will, wenn sie fort ist, ist nach Mankells Erzählung abgedruckt. Wir Leser erfahren so viel über ihr Leben, dass es fast unangenehm ist. Man liest es in dem Bewusstsein, dass diese Zeilen für jemand anderen bestimmt sind. Für Aida, die kleine Aida mit ihrem Mangobaum, die bald die Mutterrolle für ihre kleinen Geschwister übernehmen muss. Und spätestens auf diesen vierzig Seiten bricht auch dem letzten Leser das Herz. Aber es ist wichtig, ein Buch wie dieses zu lesen. Es ist wichtig, ab und zu die eigene Perspektive zu erweitern und in das Leben von Menschen einzutauchen, die nur neun Stunden Flug und doch Welten von unserem Leben entfernt leben. I Die But The Memory Lives On adalah catatan penting dan peribadi Henning Mankell dalam usaha nya menemuramah pesakit-pesakit AIDS di serata Africa ketika wabak itu merebak sekitar tahun 1980an . Pesakit-pesakit diberikan satu manual untuk menulis sendiri catatan mereka tentang kehidupan mereka, tentang apa yang mereka sayangi, tentang bagaimana mereka mendapat AIDS.
Catatan catatan penuh duka dan suka ini terkadang sangat menghibakan. Sampai ada yang menulis mengapa HIV harus kena pada mereka, mengapa virus itu terlalu kecil dan tidak dapat dilihat untuk dihindarkan.
Buku ini juga mencatat tentang kritikan keras terhadap kerajaan mereka yang tidak mengambil berat tentang penyakit yang mereka hidap.
Tentu saja buku ini memberikan gambaran bagaimana dahsyatnya keadaan mereka ketika wabak ini merebak dengan dahsyatnya pada waktu itu.

A very sad book narrating the history of the AIDS epidemic mainly across Africa but also looks at its social and detrimental health aspects across other countries too. The author highlights many harrowing true stories and cases of people afflicted with the disease. A moving and poignant glimpse into the life of those struck down by this terrible and malignant disease that destroys the lives of so many.

این کتاب هم احتمالا در زمان خودش، توجه افراد را به بیماری ایدز معطوف کرده، از این لحاظ قابل ستایشه ؛ اما کشش داستانی خاصی برای من نداشت اما شاید هدف کتاب چیزی غیر از کشش باشه

I really liked the idea of the the memory books. It is a really emotional topic, which in my opinion has not been discussed sensitive enough. Maybe it was, but I just didn't feel it. I expected more information on the memory books and more stories of parents and their children.

is a book about the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa during the 1980s and 1990s (and well ongoing.)
Mr Mankell travelled to Africa to interview people living with the HIV virus and learning more about the memory books they were creating for their children.
Many of the children from those decades were left orphan with both parents dying from this awful disease so memory books were an important item of their heritage.
I was only young at the time of the AIDS epidemic but I do remember the fears well and reading this book let me remember that feeling.
The fears of the disease and the wonders on how it is passed on.
This is a short book but it is also an emotional read. I highly recommend it if you want to see a personal side of the AIDS epidemic.

MANKEL, Henning: „Ich sterbe, aber die Erinnerung lebt“, München 2006
Tief beeindruckt beendet man das Buch. Im ersten Teil beschäftigt sich der Profi Mankell mit dem Problemkreis AIDS und Afrika. Er besuchte AIDS Kranke, redet über den Tod und wie man ihm ins Auge sieht. Im zweiten Teil kommt eine AIDS kranke Lehrerin selbst zu Wort. Eltern, die noch kleine Kinder haben und dem Tod verschrieben sind wollen ihren Kindern etwas weitergeben und schreiben sogenannte „Memoriebücher“. Sie beschreiben ihren Kindern sich selbst, ihre Verwandten und geben ihnen Ratschläge fürs Leben. Wenn sie einmal älter sind und lesen können, dann lernen sie so ihre verstorbenen Eltern kennen. Ein ergreifender Leseabschnitt. Einfach geschrieben. Literarisch nicht hochwertig, aber emotional sehr tief greifend. Wie naive Maler.

Tief beeindruckt beendet man das Buch. Im ersten Teil beschäftigt sich der Profi Mankell mit dem Problemkreis AIDS und Afrika. Er besuchte AIDS Kranke, redet über den Tod und wie man ihm ins Auge sieht. Im zweiten Teil kommt eine AIDS kranke Lehrerin selbst zu Wort. Eltern, die noch kleine Kinder haben und dem Tod verschrieben sind wollen ihren Kindern etwas weitergeben und schreiben sogenannte „Memoriebücher“. Sie beschreiben ihren Kindern sich selbst, ihre Verwandten und geben ihnen Ratschläge fürs Leben. Wenn sie einmal älter sind und lesen können, dann lernen sie so ihre verstorbenen Eltern kennen. Henning Mankell has produced quite a twist from his usual writings. This one is totally involved
with the aids crisis in Africa being the main subject. Mankell has a huge compassion for the
people who have contracted this devastating disease. He believes that the U.S. and European
countries should work together to produce remedies and make the costs to African countries
as small as possible while saving huge numbers of people in these countries. He also espouses
memory book projects for these people so that children will be able to find out the family
history.

The author went to Africa to hear the stories of people dying from AIDS. At the end you can also see an example of the memory book that people write there- They write about their children's past and their feelings for them so that their kids have something to remember them from after they pass on.
I love the idea of memory books though. Especially for kids that lost their parents before they really got to know them. So this is a really nice short but incredibly sad read.

Dieses Buch hat mich ziemlich beeindruckt. Wir nehmen viel zu wenig Wahr, wie schön es ist, gesund zu sein und nicht in einem schwierigen Land geboren zu sein.

Ok book - gives a good headup from a person view on how aids was big and unknown in the 80s. Loved the afterword in the danish edition
