Lily, a heartbroken editor from London, has just learned the hard way that love is unpredictable. After finding her fiancee entangled with another woman, she travels to Bali to recover from her failed relationship. River is a womanizing artist with a troubled past and serious commitment issues. She traded a successful career in L.A. for a quiet, anonymous life in Bali where she works as a tour guide on weekends. After the two meet on an excursion led by River, Lily is shocked to find herself curiously drawn to her new friend. Lily has never been involved with a woman before but she can't seem to get the charming and persuasive blonde out of her head. Is this newly awakened fire just a moment in time? Or has destiny led them exactly where they needed to be?

I am far too cynical for this book... and in general.
This started off pretty good but wow did it go downhill fast. There are so many things about this book that downright irritated me. I really don't understand how it's gotten such high ratings. The entire story to me was just utterly unbelievable and unrealistic. In fact I ended up skimming half of the book and even wondered whether or not it would end up as a DNF.
The main characters spend less than a week together and the reader is supposed to believe they're madly in love? I'm not buying it, in fact if someone were to tell me they were in love after only 1 night together I would be running for the hills.
The only thing this story had going for it was the chemistry between River and Lily. However instead of focusing on their relationship and building a stronger basis to make their love more believable the author chose to dedicate that attention to Lily's mother who acts so immature and clueless sometimes she might as well have been hatched from an egg.
This really just wasn't my kind of book. Plenty of other reviewers seem to like it though so give it a shot you might be less cynical than I am :)
I listened to the audiobook “Lily’s Fire” after reading my Goodreads friend Alexis’ review. She gave it two stars, and opened her review with “I am far too cynical for this book…and in general”. Well hey, now…if any of my friends IRL read that sentence, they would immediately think I wrote it! Alexis and I often agree on book ratings, but we also often differ dramatically. So, I decided to listen to “Lily’s Fire” to see how in or out of sync we might be on this one.
I enjoyed the narrator, but disliked the pervasive tape-hiss sound that plagued much of the audiobook. Poor technical quality is becoming much more frequent with Audible.com, so perhaps I should stop mentioning when it’s bad and start calling out the audiobooks that deliver quality sound. Nah…spanking can be fun.
The book begins with MC Lily deciding to go to Bali, which she had planned to do. What she had not planned to do was go alone, as it was supposed to be her honeymoon trip. Having caught her fiancé (a man) in bed with another woman just before her marriage…plans changed. Yup….Lily is straight.
Lily enjoys a private tour with MC River, an enigmatic artist with a mysterious past, and with a trail of women she’s bedded…without commitments.
Well, Lily and River spend more time together, Lily is surprised by developing a crush on River, and River, for her part, doesn’t mind helping a straight woman experiment…she’s done it before with lots of tourists. But then….River begins thinking that Lily is different than the others. Lily begins to think that life with former fiancé Edo was boring, and that she’s excited by the changes in her life.
And then Lily’s mother arrives. And somehow, a delightful story of an island romance between two improbable women who must sort out their feelings for each other, and decide whether this is a tryst or a relationship….just gets weird. Lily’s mother is too strange for all the book-time she’s given, and somehow the book suddenly includes a romance for her. River’s troubled past is revealed, River and Lily are open about their feelings for each other….to their friends, but not to each other. Lily and Edo….oh, don’t get me started. One or both (Lily and River) don’t ever return calls, and at the end all’s well.
So….decent beginning, some plausible what-do-I-want-to-do-with-my-life thinking from both MCs, some very entertaining descriptions of Bali, both the location and the people, and then lots of meandering, ridiculous non-communication, and, for two people who fell in love very quickly, enough serious ignoring of their emotions that the HEA ending was too artificial.
So, 2.5* for the author’s story of romances for Lily and her mother, 4.25* for the entertaining travel descriptions, 4* for the narration, 1.5* for the audio quality, leaves the book with….3* - meh.
So I’m not sure whether I would say I’m too cynical for the book (I did buy into the idea of a straight woman crushing on a lesbian…and reevaluating herself as bisexual, something that should happen more often IMO), but I do agree with Alexis that “Lily’s Fire” disappointed.
3.75 stars for narration. I enjoyed this audiobook version of this book. The narrator C.C. Sinclair did well on the Bali natives and the British characters including Lily and her mother, but then again, I don't know what a Bali accent sounds like.
River is an American artist living in Bali who also gives private boat tours. Great chemistry between Lily, who came to Bali for what was supposed to be her honeymoon and mysterious River who is hiding from her past. Romance was a bit fast which doesn't bother me but even I noticed it was quick.
Like the ebook, I gave the same rating, 4 stars. A good romance, likable MCs and travelogue for Bali. I enjoyed both versions. Full disclosure: I won the audiobook from the author, with no obligation for a review.
3.5 stars. A good first book from a new author. I really liked Gold's second book Beyond the Skyline so I gave this one a try too and I wasn't disappointed. Even though I didn't really connect with characters like I did in Beyond the Skyline, I still enjoyed it.
Gold differentiates her books from others by taking readers to some exotic location, Bali in this book, Hong Kong in her second book. She researches locations, food, culture, traditions quite closely so besides romance her books still have substance and provide an interesting insight into unfamiliar cultures.
The romance part was fine if not standard. I recall one or ten books that go in a similar vein. A betrayed brokenhearted girl runs away only to find an emotionally damaged player who sleeps around. Love ensues, the player is tamed, yada yada... You know how it goes. But it is well executed.
Typos are present and editing could be better but otherwise it's a really good first book from a new author and her second book is vastly better already. I'm definitely following this author to see where she'll take me next.
When Lily's life is in disarray, she hopes a holiday will help her piece it back together. River has a very dramatic past and has built an impenetrable wall around herself. Despite that, Lily gets under her skin like no other woman but River is not looking to settle down. She wants no commitment. Lily's holiday is gradually getting hotter and hotter with sizzling sexual tension. Is Lily the one who's worth facing your deepest fears for? Most of the story takes off in Bali and the description of this enchanting island is spot on. No excessive or unnecessary details. The atmosphere of this island is so palpable and I know what I am talking about because I've been able to visit this island many times. This is one of the books I couldn't put down. It got everything I want in a love story. It has characters I really cared for, moments that will twist your heart, a dazzling sexy romance, an amazing chemistry and gorgeous women that captured my imagination. I loved every word. Lise Gold is a debut author you do not want to miss. So make sure Lily's Fire is one of your choices.
Lovely romance with very likable and well written MC's, Lily who is visiting Bali which was supposed to be her honeymoon and River, an American- tour guide and artist. There a number of side characters - the author does a remarkable job giving each a backstory and personality but it is not overwhelming. I look forward to read more from this author.
Really enjoyed the book and the writing style only could not get over the mistakes in the editing the kindle edition had, Lily is spelt numerous ways throughout the book including Lily, Lilly and Lillie, annoying as she is the main character!
I would rate it about 3.75 stars but have rounded it up to 4.
After reading this authors Compass Series I wanted to check out her earlier work. I wasn't sure whether this book was for me or not but I thought I would give it a read anyway.
Lily goes on Honeymoon to Bali by herself after finding her partner cheating on her. Once there, she meets River who is an Artist/Tour Guide. I thought it was a good read once you get past the first three to four chapters. Lily is a darling. River, I liked on and off. One minute I would like her then the next I didn't. Her character was up and down for me. I also thought that she was coming on to Lily way too fast way too soon at the beginning. By the end of the story, I liked them both. The story line was good. The author writes it in a way that makes you feel you are on vacation.
It was a good solid read but to me it comes nowhere near being up there with her Compass series but then again, this is her debut book and she has come a long way since this was published. IMO
I had no idea, when I ordered this, it was enough that it was a book (paperback) and by Lise Gold. Reading it it was obvious that she evolved with the next books, but for a first novel? WOW. There were some parts that seemed a bit long winded with Lily, while the development of River, who is by far the more interesting character was too sudden and there was nothing at all, how she got herself ready to meet Lily again. But hey it was still a very good first try.
Heartbroken woman, Lily, goes on her “honeymoon” trip to a Bali resort by herself after catching her fiancé in bed with another woman. She makes the best of the trip by meeting new people, one of who makes an immediate but very deep impression on her. River is that woman, charming and attractive, who carries her own burdens of the heart.
I really loved this book. It is so powerfully written but subdued. I spent more time crying and/or smiling while reading this book than I have reading anything else in a long time. Nothing extraordinary happens, it’s more so, the intense emotional journey that Lily experiences that is so strong. There’s much talk about fate and love which is nicely presented by the author. Stay away, cynics. The characters, both mc’s and supporting, are vivid and endearing. I wanted more story at the end but that’s never a bad sign. I will definitely read other books by this author.
3.7 star ratings Good fictional romance...I loved the desperation, intensity. That said, i listened to the audio and whilst majority of the time i enjoyed the narrator, other times i felt confused by her impersonation of a Briton using an Australian accent. Also might i say the author's representation of Lily's mother needs to be believed... In addition, I think the author extended the story beyond necessary for me this was most obvious in the overmade dialogues from three quarter towards the ending of the book.
I was intrigued from page one. Beautifully written....I thought the storyline and characters were well developed. The storyline made me feel sadness, angry, and happy . I won't lie you may need a Kleenex I couple of times. I would definitely recommend this book.
This is this author's debut novel! WOW! I loved it. The gut wrenching sadness Lily was going through at the start of the book. The beauty of the setting in Bali that you can visualize yourself being there. The passion between Lily and River. Th beauty of River's artwork and what let to the end of the book was just absolutely stunningly well done. The characters were so poignantly well developed. The storyline was so spot on! I look forward reading more stories by this author!
it's a well balanced and tasty cocktail. 🤩🤩 ° a romance ° some very sensual and even erotic moments ° a bit of humor ° a bit of drama and ° some so well described tropical landscapes that's it's easy to picture them ... (OK , I guess it's even easier for me since I live under the tropics myself, LOL) & now ... I want to visit Bali !!
If you don't know Lise Gold's work yet : Give it a try and ... Enjoy !!!!
Lise Gold's debut book is sweet and refreshing. I enjoyed her characters and their introduction into the story. Both River and Lily were likable and interesting characters, the book was fun lightly humorous and abit steamy but mostly a wonderful romance. I look forward to more works from this Author.
I've read this book a little while ago and I found a very enjoyable, light romance. I hesitated about the narrator at first and it took a while to get used to her voice, but I warmed to her and she did a really good job with the different characters' accents voices. This is the author's debut and I'm looking forward to her next book and the narrator's other work.
I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the main characters, Lily and River, their complexities, insecurities, hopes and desires, in what was a passionate and fun story, with drama!!! (always love a little drama)
The story is set in Bali, where Lily is taking her honeymoon alone and fate brings River into her life, has her questioning her sexuality, pondering her life up until that point, and at some points in a total disarray of mess but it was brilliant and kept me hooked with each chapter.
River was a D*** but it only added to the story, and was all explained in her character’s complex make up, which only had me loving her more!
All in all this was a lot of fun to read! Emotional, well put together and written, and very exciting. The quirky addition of Lily’s mother, and the island locals (including the monkeys!) really added to making this book all the bit more special. I highly recommend giving this romance a read.
AMAZING! Om my goodness am I blown away by this book! Although it is Ms Gold’s debut book, it’s not the first of her work I read. I cannot believe this is a first book, it is just…well amazing! This is a love at first sight kind of book which is always fun but this one has our heroes being separated for a time so it’s not quite a U-Haul situation. I LOVED the characters in this story. Not just Lily and River, who are a perfect couple that I adore and love, but Lily’s mother is a riot and their friends are special too. Ms Gold is able to make her readers a part of the story and immerse them into the warm sunny days of Bali and the cold rainy ones in London. The love River and Lily share made my chest feel heavy and full and I had a major case of the warm fuzzies. The intimate moments were stunning and so darn hot, I felt them to my toes…. I loved all the emotions this book evoked. This is a delicious and delectable read and I know I will be reading it again soon!
I really like the beginning and love the ending of this book. The in between pages....I would like a little more detail, particularly in regards to River's motivations and what finally turned her around. In general, the characters are easy to like and I love the many secondary characters with all their quirks. The descriptions of Bali are wonderful. Overall, this is a well written, well paced book and I recommend it.
I was very impressed that this was her first novel. It was very enjoable, well written. I found myself trying to slow down once I got to 70% to try and make it last longer. Looking forward to more from Lise Gold.
Lise Gold did it once again with love in a foreign land. Part of what made this such an enjoyable read was the locale and River's place in the story. Lily coming to terms with her needs and true desires was well written and realistic. What spoke to me was River's insight as it grows and her journey as an out/closeted Lesbian. Lily's issues with alcohol were presented well and speak to the age old issue of drinking to excess to cope. Lily's mom is a hoot. and brings a sense of silly British humor to the novel. She is seriously refreshing. I found the everybody in love idea refreshing and amusing. I would definitely recommend Lily's Fire to anybody but especially to folks who enjoy coming out books.
After reading a couple of books of Lise Gold, she's really talented writer. She let us know the importance of life and love. In each and every story she tries to potrait about the personal care and trusts between two persons, And the respect they give to their space. And the chemistry between the two persons is awesome. Feels each and every moment of their chemistry within us......... I love reading Lise Gold books. It makes me feel happy at the end of the day......❤️❤️❤️❤️
