An impoverished spinster, Miss Augusta Penworth is not living the life she had once envisioned for herself. Beset by a series of tragedies that altered the trajectory of her life beyond measure, she struggles to get by, sharing a small house with another gently bred woman in similar circumstances. When Hugh Elliott, Lord Elwynn, comes crashing back into her life, reminding her of the hopes and dreams she’d once had for her future, Augusta is torn. She wants to believe that she can still claim the life and the love that she’d once been promised. But fear is an ugly thing, and when it’s accompanied by severely wounded pride, it can be insurmountable. Recently widowed after twelve long years in a miserably unhappy marriage that he’d never wanted, Hugh is determined to no longer live a life based solely on duty. He wants the things he’d allowed societal and familial pressures to deny him… the happiness of being with the one and only woman he’s ever loved But Augusta has little trust of him and with good reason. He broke her heart and left her humiliated in the eyes of their peers. If he cannot achieve the Herculean task of convincing her to forgive him and risk her heart on him once more, will they live out the remainder of their lives wondering what might have been?

2.5 stars ⭐️.
The hero may be responsible and honorable, still I couldn’t forgive him. Not for abandoning heroine and also 12 years of separation is bloody long. Its true he groveled nicely and was persistent. Still heroine suffered too much and he didn’t do anything to help her. I frequently felt she was second best. Eventhough he was the catalyst for all the misfortune in her life. But i have to applaud heroine, she was strong.
Still recommended.

Good plot, angsty because of love gone wrong. The H was a good man, but he's been trapped into a loveless marriage. His family had arranged this, to make sure he didn't marry the h. Her life changed as a result, and she was bitter and not likeable at first. The H was determined to make her life better, and then decided he wouldn't let her go. It was not really a nice story, the heroine was not nice and I really didn't like how she treated the H.

This was another wonderful read by this author. What if you had found and lost love 12 years ago and became jaded due to this. What if that love come back into your life and still loved you. What if that love had been tricked into choosing another. What would you do
I loved the storyline and was intrigued from page one. I feel in love with the characters from the beginning. Wonderful character development and the story fit the time frame. This was a great read to pass a rainy day

What if it took you twelve years to finally get your happy ever after? Augusta had written off love and her happy end, so when she is presented with the object of her distaste of love by the machinations of friends, can she let go of her anger and finnaly get her hearts desire? Hugh was forced into marrying someone he didn't love andd upon her death, he was willing to go along with the life he was given. When faced with the same machinations, he makes it his mission to win Augusta back and finally get the life he wanted twelve years earlier. The catch, he has to convince Augusta to trust him again but she is resistant to give him a chance.

This was an easy read regency story with easily to relate to characters. There is some fun snark and swoon worth machinations throughout. I requested an advance copy to voice my own opinions.

First let me say that I love Chasity Bowlin's books and couldn't wait to read this one. I made it to half way through chapter 7 and quit reading it. I really thought the book had a good concept reading the preview. The beginning of the book was good but then when I read why Hugh did not go through with his offer for Augusta, I couldn't get past the feeling that he was a weak willed man that couldn't stand up for what he wanted. He was strong enough to tell his mother to remove herself from his home but he couldn't tell Felicity that set him up to be found in a compromising situation he wouldn't marry her. He married so his and her reputations would not be lessened. He couldn't let her be hurt by his actions but he felt it was honorable the way he treated the woman he loved that had done him no wrong. If Felicity had not played a part of the compromise I probably could have continued to read it. But it just made him look weaker for not standing up to her. I actually was glad she was killed off. He told Augusta how Felicity sincerely regretted her decision, then it's like he wants her to feel bad because she's dead, my thoughts were she didn't regret them enough to not wed him, oh well we all die. I know that it is suppose to be how they would have behaved during the time period but there are to many books that take liberties that have really strong heroes and heroines.

A bit predictable, but thoroughly enjoyable

High and Augusta lost many years and deserved to find their happiness, this book takes us so long this journey a bit of spice thrown in for good measure. A few good twists on how things on how their lives and circumstance brought them to this point 12 years after all hope was lost.

Hope restored

This one was hard to read. Left hopeless after so much loss, Augusta had every right to be bitter. I completely understood her anger and unwillingness to expect things to turn out well. But hugh's persistence and friends' help made her see a second chance at love was possible .

Lovely Read

Fairly new to Regency. Truly enjoyed the story and characters. Love lost and regained and Happily Ever After... What more can a reader ask. Enjoy this author and have read other books as well. Will watch for more of her stories!

Another great Chasity Bowlin story

I love Chasity Bowlin’s writing and this book is no exception- it is another engaging read. Two of my favourite tropes, spinster and second chance romance, combine in this well plotted story and make an incredibly enjoyable read.

Definitely Worth the Wait

Really enjoyed this book and how true love eventually wins out. Love how Hugh put his mean mother in her place, the old hag. And loved how she finally accepted his long awaited marriage.

I love second chance love stories and this one was especially intriguing.

Augusta lost her love just when she thought she found someone to return her affections. Due to a meddling mama, her love was snatched from her in an instant. Hugh had to do what was right in the eyes of the ton and marry someone he did not love.

When they have the opportunity at happiness again, will Augusta be able to put her jaded heart away and finally be able to mend that broken heart and give Hugh another chance.

I love Chasity’s writing, her characters are so vibrant, and very relatable. This is one of my favorite time periods to read. The author described it so well I could practically see it in front of me. I heartily recommend this book.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
