In the movie "De Taali" (starring Aftab Shivdasani, Rimi Sen), a kidnapper tortures his hostage by showing "RGV ki Aag" (RamGopal Varma's disastrous remake of Sholay). The next time he could use this book.
The book is written in Urdu language using d Devnagari script. Thankfully I have read some Urdu poetry and it was not a problem. But horribly bad writing was the problem.
As an example, Akbar's "Janmapatri" is reproduced in its full 10-page glory. So are many other documents/letters. There is no flow of events. The language is ridiculously artificial. There is no attempt to fictionalise or get into the minds of any character. Wonder how it managed to get published ? Even the snippets r uninteresting !
Perhaps except for a few pages when the Christian priests interact with the Emperor (1* is for that), the book is 0-star material. Finished it only because Akbar is one of my fav historical figures.

अकबर का दौर अजीब हालत का दौर था| एक बदहवास सा मुल्क सकूं की तरफ बढ़ता है| अपनी लम्बी पारी से भी और बहुत लम्बी पारी खेलने की चाह में अबुल मुज़फ्फर जलालुद्दीन मोहम्मद अकबर बादशाह ने अपनी हालत कुछ अजीब ही कर ली थी| यह उपन्यास उस “हालत –ए – अजीब” से शुरू होता है, जिसमें बादशाह सलामत कह उठे थे – “गाइ है सु हिंदू खावो और मुसलमान सूअर खावो|” यह वो शब्द है जिनको मूँह से निकलने पर तब और आज सिर्फ जुबां नहीं, सिर कट सकते हैं, और तख़्त बदल उठते हैं| यह वो बादशाह अकबर है, जिन्हें न सिर्फ पूर्व जन्म में शंकराचार्य के श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मण कुल में जन्मे मुकुंद ब्राह्मण का अवतार बताया गया बल्कि जो खुद “अल्लाहो अकबर” को नए अर्थ देने की कोशिश में पाया गया| यह वो अकबर बादशाह है जो बाद में “दीन – ए- इलाही” की शुरुआत करता है और छोड़ सा देता है| वह बादशाह अकबर जो, “जैसे जिए वैसे मरे| ना किसी को पता किस दीन में जिए, ना किसी को पता किस दीन में मरे|”
यूँ; पुस्तक को पढ़ने और पसंद करने के बाद भी इसकी विधा के बारे में सोचना पड़ता है | हालांकि लेखक प्रकाशक इसे उपन्यास कहते हैं| मैं इसे ऐतिहासिक विवरण कहूँगा| हम सबको पढ़ना चाहिए| हिंदी में ऐतिहासिक उपन्यास बहुत है| शाज़ी ज़मां का “अकबर” इतिहास का पुनर्लेख है जिसे औपन्यासिकता प्रदान करने का कठिन प्रयास लेखक ने किया है| वो कुछ हद तक सफल होते होते असफल हो जाते हैं| असफल इसलिए कि आप पाठक इस से ऊब जाता है| तमाम प्रसंगों में सन्दर्भों की भरमार है| बकौल शाज़ी ज़मां, “इस उपन्यास की एक-एक घटना, एक-एक किरदार, एक-एक संवाद इतिहास पर आधारित है|”
समय, सनक और समझ से जूझते अकबर बादशाह की टक्कर पर हिंदुस्तान में डेढ़ हजार साल पहले सम्राट अशोक का जिक्र आता है| इन दो से बेहतर नाम महाकाव्यों में ही मिल सकते हैं| अकबर की जिन्दगी के ऊँचे नीचे पहलू इस विवरण में आए है जिनमें से एक को, इस पुस्तक को बाजार में बेचने के लिए भी उछाला गया था – अकबर के मूंह से निकली एक गाली जिसे तमाम हिंदुस्तान आज भी देता है| पुस्तक अकबर को उसके समकालीन लेखकों और इतिहासकारों के नज़रिए से हमारे सामने रखती है| अकबर के समकालीन इतिहास की जानने समझने के लिए यह महत्वपूर्ण विवरण प्रदान करती है| साथ है, हिंदुस्तान का अपना माहौल आज भी कुछ ज्यादा नहीं बदला है इसे समझा जा सकता है|
यह विवरण उपन्यास तो नहीं बन पाया है साथ ही उन महत्वपूर्ण बातों से नज़र चुराता सा निकल गया है जिन्हें इसके पत्रकार – इतिहासकार लेखक छु सकते थे| मसलन अकबर के हिंदुस्तान का फ़ारस, तुर्की, पुर्तगाल और पोप के साथ रिश्ता तो चर्चा में आता है; मगर उन हालत के बारे में टीस छोड़ जाता है जो तुर्की और इस्लाम के यूरोप और ईसाइयत से रिश्ते की वजह से पैदा हुए थे और नतीजतन हिंदुस्तान और दुनिया की तारीफ में बहुत उठापटक हुई| अकबर के जाने के बाद का दौर, धर्मतंत्र और राजतन्त्र के कमजोर होने का दौर भी था जिसने बाद में संविधानों और राष्ट्रों के लिए रास्ता खोल दिया था|
कुल मिला कर किस्सा यह शेख़ अबुल फ़ज़ल के अकबरनामा और मुल्ला अब्दुल क़ादिर बदायूंनी के ख़ुफ़िया मुन्तखबुत्तावारीख के इर्द गिर्द बुना गया है और इसमें तमाम लेखकों और इतिहासकारों की लिखत को रंगतभरे खुशबूदार मसालों के साथ परोसा गया है|

This is decidedly the worst novel I have ever read, and probably it will be the worst novel for you too, if you will risk reading it. This book, with amazing artwork, impressive language and spellbinding synopsis at the back cover, will attract you the moment your eyes will fall on it. The synopsis will attract your imagination and will make you believe that this book has some wonderful insight about the Emperor Akbar. Quoting Akbar’s real words from the sources, the writer captivates your mind by showing a side of Mughal great which probably no one has ever thought. It shows Akbar talking gibberish about Muslims eating Pig and Hindus eating Cow, which is shown as ‘Haalat-e-ajeeb’ as per historic records. And that’s it, any history buff or person who loves to explore the new aspect of historic personalities will fall for this book.
But once you will start reading the book, you will realize that this book will provide you nothing about Akbar or his era. The author is totally confused in his narration and has managed to write a fiction on history in such a jumbled way that even a random fantasy book looks bearable. There are multiple instances where the writer starts with the thoughts of Akbar, then the narration suddenly shifts to the time of Babur in same situation or place, and then start telling the story of Babur while having loads of characters entering and leaving the story. And for next few pages you go through Babur’s life which is totally out of sync from what you were reading moments ago about Akbar. Most of the times you won’t realize when a character will enter and leave, or what is the significance of the character, and worst of all why the character was introduced at all. So you will find that many of the great men and women of the era are almost wasted in the narration.
The other thing I was not able to understand was why was this book written as a novel at all? There is no doubt that author has a wonderful knowledge about the life of Akbar and the era, and yes he has brilliant command over language. But he lacked the imagination of a writer to compile a story which could connect with the readers. The the writer has lost a glorious chance of producing a wonderful book for Emperor Akbar but only if it would have been a biography with proper timeline.
To conclude, I would say don’t waste your time. Message me to know about the books which will engage you in fiction as well as history account of Mughal era and particularly about Akbar.

History in the guise of a fictional novel. Written after a great deal of research as is evident by the references of many a books, incidents, pictures of the time of Mughal Empire in India right from Taimur,Babur, Humayun and many others. Written in Hindustani it is a good book to know and understand Akbar, the way in which he ruled, treated his subjects, his marriages, his sons, his court which had people like Tansen, Birbal, Abul Fazal and many others, his enemies,the way he treated all religion, started his own religion, his love for elephant fight, guns and hunting,his life and eventually his death. There are many facets of Akbar that this books throws light on.

To be honest, could not complete this book. And that's the reason for poor rating. It just feels a collection of quotes and excerpts from different historical sources. Don't know why it is called a novel. Story is really muddled and problem is not that there are too many threads running in parallel with frequent jumps in timeline, but also that there are too many irrelevant details, the author goes on for very long unnecessarily. For example, there are some ten pages on the great emperor’s “Kundli” and the signs on it. With all the hype around this book, was expecting a tight, and since it’s called novel, an imaginative relook at Akbar’s life. But alas!

शाहिद जमा की यह किताब शानदार है अकबर बादशाह का पूरा चरित्र और पूरा किरदार ही लाजवाब है किन्नर के साथ इसे पढ़ने का जो आनंद आया वह शानदार है
किंडल आपके साथ इस किताब को पढ़ने में मुझे कंटिन्यू असली पढ़ने की जो सुविधा पहले आती थी अब उस पर कुछ समस्या नहीं है बाकी किताब बहुत अच्छी है और इसे सोच समझकर और दिमाग का इस्तेमाल करते हुए पढ़ना जायज है

ये किताब एक सीधी रेखा में ना चलकर उलझे हुए धागे की तरह है. कहानी कहने का यह तरीका परेशान करने वाला है, ऐसा लगता है जैसे कोई जानकार कोई बात बताना चाहता है पर उस बात का ओर छोर नहीं है. बातों से बातेँ निकल आती हैं. ज्ञानवर्धक है.

यह उपन्यास ऐतिहासिक उपन्यास के तौर पर बहुत उपयोगी लेकिन ऊबाऊ सा प्रतीत होता है।घटनाओं का एकदम बदल जाना ही इसे ऊबाऊ बनाता है,पाठक इससे तारतम्य स्थापित कर पाए तो इतिहास की खासी जानकारी इससे मिल जाती है लेकिन बहुत पेशोपेश से घटनाएं ऐसी जुड़ी हैं कि अति ऐतिहासिक सी लगने लगती हैं। उपन्यासकार के तौर पर लेखक ने उनकी सफलताओं का जिक्र इतना किया है कि उसके समय की खामियां कहीं न कहीं छूट गई हैं।अकबर का व्यक्तिगत वर्णन कम है,उसके दीनी रुझान का वर्णन ही सर्वत्र है और "हिन्दू है सो गाई खावै"इसकी व्याख्या क्या हो ये समझ से परे है।

The book is quite long and one would think that it is without necessity. For instance, the author quotes from many letters between the king and other royals verbatim instead of summarising. This makes the narration slow and too detailed for light reading. Effective editing could have made the book crisp and better paced.
