കഥാകൃത്ത്, നോവലിസ്റ്റ്, തിരക്കഥാകൃത്ത്, ചലച്ചിത്ര സംവിധായകന്‍. 1933 ജൂലൈ 15-ന് പൊന്നാനിക്കടുത്ത് കൂടല്ലൂരില്‍ ജനിച്ചു. അദ്ധ്യാപകനായിരുന്നു. മാതൃഭൂമി ആഴ്ചപ്പതിപ്പിന്റെ സഹപത്രാധിപര്‍, പിന്നീട് പത്രാധിപര്‍ (1956-'81). മാതൃഭൂമി പീരിയോഡിക്കല്‍സ് എഡിറ്റര്‍ (1988-'99). കേന്ദ്ര സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാര്‍ഡ് (കാലം), കേരള സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാര്‍ഡ് (നാലുകെട്ട്), വയലാര്‍ അവാര്‍ഡ് (രണ്ടാമൂഴം), ഓടക്കുഴല്‍ അവാര്‍ഡ് (വാനപ്രസ്ഥം), ജ്ഞാനപീഠ പുരസ്‌കാരം എന്നിവ ലഭിച്ചു. തിരക്കഥയ്ക്കുള്ള സംസ്ഥാന, ദേശീയ അവാര്‍ഡുകള്‍ പലതവണ കിട്ടി. നിര്‍മ്മാല്യത്തിന് മികച്ച ചലച്ചിത്രത്തിനുള്ള 1974-ലെ ദേശീയ അവാര്‍ഡും. കാലിക്കറ്റ് സര്‍വ്വകലാശാലയുടെയും മഹാത്മാഗാന്ധി സര്‍വ്വകലാശാലയുടെയും ഡി.ലിറ്റ് ബഹുമതി. 2004-ല്‍ പത്മഭൂഷണ്‍ ലഭിച്ചു.

Madath Thekkepaattu Vasudevan Nair, popularly known as M. T., was an Indian author, screenplay writer and film director. He was a prolific and versatile writer in modern Malayalam literature, and was one of the masters of post-Independence Indian literature. Randamoozham, which retells the story of the Mahabharata from the point of view of Bhimasena, is widely credited as his masterpiece.
At the age of 20, as a chemistry undergraduate, he won the prize for the best short story in Malayalam for Valarthumrigangal at World Short Story Competition jointly conducted by New York Herald Tribune, Hindustan Times, and Mathrubhumi. His first major novel, Naalukettu (The Legacy), written at the age of 23, won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1958. His other novels include Manju (Mist), Kaalam (Time), Asuravithu (The Demon Seed), and Randamoozham (The Second Turn). The emotional experiences of his early days went into his novels, and most of his works are oriented towards the basic Malayalam family structure and culture. His three novels set in traditional tharavads in Kerala are Naalukettu, Asuravithu, and Kaalam.
Nair was a screenwriter and director of Malayalam films. He directed seven films and wrote the screenplay for around 54 films. He won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay four times, for: Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (1989), Kadavu (1991), Sadayam (1992), and Parinayam (1994), which is the most by anyone in the screenplay category. In 1995 he was awarded the highest literary award in India, Jnanpith, for his overall contribution to Malayalam literature. In 2005, India's third highest civilian honour, Padma Bhushan, was awarded to him.

M.T. is a name that require no introduction. This book introduces us to the world of the Malayalam film industry through the eyes of M.T. It will be a good choice if you are new to the world of M.T.

For the people of Kerala, M. T. Vasudevan Nair (or M. T., as he is commonly known) is an institution. A Gyanpith winner (India's prime literary award) this novelist par excellence has shone in the field of films also. He has adapted his own novels and short stories to the screen, expertly recreating them for celluloid, as well as writing original screenplays. He has consistently earned both critical and popular acclaim for his movies, and has worked with almost all the top lights in Malayalam cinema almost through three generations.

This book, describing M. T. 's experiences in the field of films, is a very light offering (considering his usual heavy, flowery prose). It could easily be read in one sitting. The author, by his own admission, is not attempting a comprehensive chronicle of his cinematic journey - though if he ever does that, it would indeed be a tome worth possessing! - rather, he is reminiscing at random. We get the image of the octogenarian lying back in his easy chair, sifting through the pictures flitting through his memory, pulling one out from here and there and rambling on about it. So what we, the readers, get is a dazzling kaleidoscope of cinematic episodes right from the times when Malayalam movies were concentrated in the studios of Kodampakkam in Chennai to the modern era, when it has been totally freed from the studio and totally transplanted to Kerala's native soil.



Prem Nazir, Sathyan and Madhu - three old-time heroes

We meet Prem Nazir, romantic hero and matinee idol extraordinaire - the holder of the Guinness record for the maximum number of appearances as hero (600+) - as a reticent, soft-spoken gentleman with a heart of gold; Satyan, the greatest actor of the black-and-white era, brash, outspoken, yet compellingly honest; Sankaradi, character artist and comedian for two generations, working his unique brand of drunken comedy on the Chennai police force; P. Bhaskaran, poet, lyricist and director, a communist as well as a devotee of Lord Ayyappa... We also meet a host of unknown characters, who by their tireless efforts behind the screen brought the glittering world of celluloid to life. M. T. 's experience in making his national award-winning movie Nirmalyam is described over a couple of chapters and make engrossing reading.

But all said and done, reading this book is like reading a popular movie magazine. There is no depth to the articles, and the language (going M. T. 's usual standards) is pretty pedestrian. However, for a person who grew up with the swashbuckling sagas of Prem Nazir in the musty movie halls of my village, this book provided a welcome sense of nostalgia.

മലയാളസിനിമാരംഗം എക്കാലത്തെയും വലിയ പ്രതിസന്ധിയും പ്രതിഷേധവും നേരിട്ടുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഇന്ന് എം.ടി. എഴുതിയ ചിത്രത്തെരുവുകൾ എന്ന പുസ്തകത്തിന് വളരെയധികം പ്രാധാന്യമുണ്ടെന്ന് തോന്നുന്നു. എം.ടി.യുടെ ചലച്ചിത്ര സ്മരണകളാണീ പുസ്തകം. ഇന്നത്തെ പോലെ ടെക്നോളജിയോ ആധുനിക ഷൂട്ടിങ് സാമഗ്രികളോ ഇല്ലാതിരുന്ന ഒരു കാലത്തെ സിനിമാചരിത്രം. എം.ടി.യെന്ന എഴുത്തുകാരനെ ഒരുപാടറിഞ്ഞ നമ്മൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ഒരു സിനിമാപ്രവർത്തകനെന്ന നിലയിൽ നോക്കിക്കാണുമ്പോൾ ഒരുപാട് കൗതുകം തോന്നുന്നു. വിവരണങ്ങൾ സാധാരണപോലെ തന്നെ വളരെയധികം ഭംഗിയായി പറയുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സിനിമാ അനുഭവങ്ങൾ, സൗഹൃദങ്ങൾ എല്ലാം പതിനാറ് അദ്ധ്യായങ്ങളിലായാണ് അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. കോടമ്പാക്കം, മദ്രാസ്, കോഴിക്കോട്, കൂടല്ലൂർ, തിരുവനന്തപുരം, ബോംബെ, ശബരിമല, അമേരിക്ക തുടങ്ങി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഓർമ്മകൾ മേഞ്ഞ സ്ഥലങ്ങൾ ഒരുപാടുണ്ട്. കോടമ്പാക്കത്തെ കൃഷ്ണാബായ് തെരുവിലെ വാസു അണ്ണൻ, പ്രേംനസീർ, ശോഭനാ പരമേശ്വരൻ നായർ, ഭാസ്കരൻ മാസ്റ്റർ, ശങ്കരാടി, മധു, സത്യൻ മാസ്റ്റർ, എം. ബി. ശ്രീനിവാസൻ, മമ്മൂട്ടി, ചന്ദ്രൻ നായർ, അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഭാര്യ ബേബി, അടൂർ ഭാസി, ഹരിഹരൻ, ബോംബെ രവി, മോനിഷ, എസ്. കെ. പൊറ്റെക്കാട്ട്, ബാലൻ കെ. നായർ, തിലകൻ, എൽ. വി. പ്രസാദ് തുടങ്ങിയവരുമായുള്ള പരിചയവും സൗഹൃദവും അദ്ദേഹം വളരെ നന്നായി അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. അതിൽ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ മനസ്സിൽ തട്ടുന്നത് അകാലത്തിൽ മരിച്ചുപോയ നടി മോനിഷയെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ഓർമ്മകളും, പ്രേംനസീറുമായുള്ള സൗഹൃദവുമാണ്. മുറപ്പെണ്ണ്, ഇരുട്ടിന്റെ ആത്മാവ്, കുട്ട്യേടത്തി, നിർമ്മാല്യം, പഞ്ചാഗ്നി, നഖക്ഷതങ്ങൾ, പെരുന്തച്ചൻ, കടവ് എന്നീ സിനിമകളുടെ ചിത്രീകരണസമയത്തെ ഓർമ്മകളും അദ്ദേഹം പങ്കുവെച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. മലയാളത്തിന് എം.ടി.യെന്ന കഥാകാരനോടൊപ്പം തന്നെ എം.ടി.യെന്ന സിനിമാപ്രവർത്തകനും എത്രമാത്രം പ്രിയവും അഭിമാനവുമാണെന്ന് ഈ പുസ്തകം ഓർമ്മിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
