The word Upanishad literally means 'sit down near' for the student had to sit close to the teacher to receive instructions. Perhaps, what brought the two still closer were the stories the Guru narrated. These stories provided a meaningful context for the topics under discussion. They also demonstrate that in those days knowledge was not the monopoly of any select group. Thus Janashruti, the ruler of the land, approaches the cart driver Raikva, with humility, to seek the highest truth.
I could have given it 5 stars but there is a publishing error in the book, as a part of one story appears in another story, which makes the overall reading experience jittery. Other than that minor irritation the book is an apt description of Upanishadic tales that would make complex ideas easily palatable. This book is a great way, indeed, to introduce the ideas given in Upanishads to a young audience. A must read!!!
This part has 4 educational tales from upinishads. The stories are great for kids. I am going to start reading ACK to my kids during their bed times . One page for 3rd story is jumbled hence 4 stars.
Realisation of the existence of LIFE behind every living thing!
The three tales point towards the true purpose of life - to realise the presence of Life behind every living being. The main aim is to find out why we are here on the earth! Where will we go after this life? Where did we come from?
Randomly selected stories. No real thread linking the selection. The stories are not bad but essentially the same. Few more stories would have been nice.
The stories are good but a page is situated at a wrong place.
The stories are good but the second last page of the story "Raikva the Cartman" is in the middle of the story "When the Devas were humbled" So take care while studying the story.
