Camera Obscura

Rate this book
For as long as Rose can remember, she’s been an assassin for the Order of Shadows—those who act as judge, jury, and executioner for the supernatural. She’s a highly trained assassin; an expert in subterfuge, manipulation, and firearms—which doesn’t exactly make for the best bedside manner when she’s not on the clock. But when Vampires kill nearly every member of House Sterling, Rose finds herself forced to turn from a killer into protector and detective.

Let me start this by saying, I have read pretty much everything Christina Quinn has published and though I had mixed feelings about some of her books, I can truly say I didn’t have any about this one. I loved this book!

Why? Because I love Rose, who is the main character of Camera Obscura. I can’t even describe how refreshing it is to read a book where the female lead is strong, independent, and somewhat of a bitch and the author makes no excuses or apologies for her being that way. I love Rose and her homicidal tendencies even when they’re used against people she should love.

Anyway, enough fangirling about Rose and onto the rest of the book. Rose is a shadow who works for the Order of Shadows, an organization tasked with keeping the supernatural world from getting too out of hand. She’s a minus null, which means she’s got no magical ability of her own and magic doesn’t work on her but the lack of power is sort of her superpower since she can’t be influenced by magic users. This also leaves her in some sticky personal situations since she also lacks emotions normal human beings take for granted.

She’s on a job when we meet her but things go wrong and she ends up babysitting, Thorn, a needy sorcerer, while she tries to unravel an evil plot by one of the supernatural communities. Rose gets deeper and deeper into the mess, following the twists and turns only to find that some people aren’t exactly what they seemed to be and some are exactly what they always were.

I only have one thing bad to say about this book and that was Rose didn’t get to kill enough people and if you read this book, you’ll know exactly what I mean by that.

2.5 ... a reluctant 3 stars

I’m fairly torn on how to feel about this one. I like the idea of it so much, Nate is worth a star all on his own, and, honestly, the actual writing is pretty good. (The editing is a bit of a mess, but that’s another issue all together.) Which means my dislike of the book is based on subjective, personal preferences, not objective quality ones.

But, to me, the decision to protect the heir of House Sterling (as stated in the blurb) makes no sense in the actual situation. So, from the very beginning the plot is pretty shaky. And it just gets worse from there. Rose has a SERIOUS case of “I’m not like other girls.” Well, for her it’s “I’m not like other people,” but it’s the same in this situation. The narrative says some version of “other people might…but not me…” about two dozen times. We get it, you’re special.

Every male (other than the disposable minions) is in love with her, even though she’s a bitch to every single one of them. She’s the hottest, smartest, most skilled, etc. etc. etc. It got awful hard to relate to her, and I don’t even mean because she’s an admitted sociopath.

Lastly, I hated, I mean REALLY hated the ending. I see that it is leaving things open for a sequel. But it was so unsatisfying I can’t imagine wanting to come back for more.

So, I suppose this is just a matter of the wrong reader for the book. Like I said, the writing isn’t bad if you can over look the editing. But I didn’t like the rest of it.

Well done

I got this book after scouting it for publication and it was everything and more. The storyline is great and I absolutely live the main character. This is a series I can truly love reading

Well Worth the Wait

While the action isn't lacking, sometimes you might want to choke our heroine, Rose, as she can be a bit difficult thanks to her makeup. But in the end, you always understand that Rose cares in a way that others may not understand, but it's a real good thing she's the way she is because it keeps her and others alive.
