Soul Doubt: A Rock-and-Roll Faust

Rate this book
He sold his soul for rock and roll; now he wants out. But if he can't reveal the truth to the angel sent to save him, he'll never be free.
It’s 1968, and Job Chandler has everything he wants. He’s a rock star playing guitar—as well as a myriad of eclectic instruments—in the highly successful Puppet on a String. But something’s not right. He’s restless and unhappy. Nothing’s turned out quite the way he expected, and anything resembling freedom has dissolved in the face of a contract with the group’s manager, the provisions of which he failed to fully understand when he signed it.
And then, out of nowhere, Sally Beaumaris, a young woman filled with hope and promise, appears, and he begins to realize he wants more than what fame and gold albums can offer. But the contract is eternally binding, and the price is his soul. He can’t let Sally get tangled up in his commitment, but he can’t let her go either. Can the love of one woman give him the strength to get out? Or will the sacrifice to break the contract prove to be more than he can bear to give? Read Soul Doubt, a story of love, magic and tragedy.

Strange read. I must have enjoyed it because I read it in one sitting. It had an interesting twist and the end wasn't anything I could imagine.

Enjoy.

Sally Beaumaris, nineteen years old from Youngstown, Ohio, is in Pittsburgh to see her favourite band, Puppet on a String. After the concert, she convinces her friends to drop her off at the band’s hotel and with the help of her cousin, Donald, who works nights at the hotel, she knocks on Willie Curtis’s door, her favourite member of the band, with all the courage she can muster…

‘Soul Doubt’ is rock and roll, sex and drugs in abundance yet it is Sally and Job’s relationship that defines the book. All the characters are fully rounded and well created, reacting together to move the story on at pace. Told from these two points of view, the reader is privy to the worries, secrets and doubts of both, creating tension and excitement.

The mystery comes from Phineas Bateman and the elusive Mr Byrne, and their hold on the band while the magic comes from Megan, Sam and Willie, affectionately referred to as ‘The CLs’, a polyamorous relationship that works on every level but especially when practising magic.

‘Soul Doubt’ is a compelling read and I highly recommend it.
