In this Level A guided reading book, close up photographs show a squirrel going about its day. On each left-hand page three word sentences that start with ‘I can…’ appear on a mostly white page describing the action, “I can jump,” “I can sit.” “I can eat.” The repetitive phrases and clear photos are useful supports to help the earliest of new readers to succeed. When a hawk appears, the action becomes intense, as it tries to catch the squirrel. Don’t worry – the squirrel gets away! After all, “I can run.” and “I can hide.” The dramatic chase scenes along with the striking photographs make this a particularly engaging entry-level reading book.

Part of Holiday House's easy reader series, this is a guided reading level A book whose text consists entirely of 3 word sentences all beginning with "I can..." and ending with a verb. Each sentence goes along with a crisp, bright full-page photograph of a squirrel running, hopping, hiding, etc. The pictures are terrific and will delight young readers. While the text seems slight (and I'm not sure why two pages both contain the text "I can hide") it is perfect for those just learning to read. There are never enough books for this reading level so this would be a good choice.

Intended for beginning readers, the simple words, accompanied by full-page photographs of squirrels in motion, make this book a winner. Readers will smile at all the antics of the squirrels depicted in the book. Except for the photographs, though, it reminded me of my Fun with Dick and Jane reader back in my early years. It's a good thing that squirrel can hide since a raptor would love to make a meal of him.

This book is a great book for the beginning reader approximately grades K-2. I also enjoyed it as an adult due to the wonderful photographs that illustrate the simple text. This book about a squirrel can be used to introduce students to food chains due to the photographs of a hawk interacting with the squirrel. As a "I Like To Read" guided reading book it is an A level book - one of the most simplest of books, but boy, what wonderful close-up photographs of the life of a squirrel.

This is a great book depicting all the things a squirrel can do--with pictures of a real squirrel to accompany the sparse text. Good for reading aloud to very young children, but also good for very beginning readers.

In ten simple sentences starting with the words, “I can…”, new readers can follow the daily actions and activities of a gray squirrel. Head illustrates the book with color photographs each one captioned with a single sentence such as “I can run. I can hop. I can jump.”

The color photographs combined with the simple sight text are an excellent technique for a primer designed for beginning readers.
