KIER WEST - UNARMED & DANGEROUS. His father's been murdered, the police want to arrest him and the bad guys are going to kill him. Kier's life is in tatters and he's on the run. But after seeing a girl attack three muggers on a train, he finds himself drawn into a secret organisation of crime fighters. Sent to an isolated Greek monastery, Kier must learn the ancient art of unarmed combat before embarking on a deadly mission: to bring his father's killers to justice. 'Terrific stuff...classily put together and lip-smackingly gory." The Financial Times.
Why I love this book I hear you ask? Because it’s the first book that I read and loved. Yes I had the Harry Potter books read to me and I loved them but this was the first book that I had: chosen, read, and loved. I did a workshop with Steve about how to write stories and it was the best, I bought this book after, I think I was around ten at the time. I opened it and fell in love with reading, just like that, Kier was my idol and I wanted to be just like him, maybe without the dead dad part. The book took my on car races, explosions and fighting to the death by a hero just like me. I’d never been told I should a book for boys and this was far better than any of those other books for girls about crushes. (I think that was the day I started to hate the restraints of gender)
I spend a lot of my time in a local book shop and sometimes I’ll see a tiny human struggle with not knowing what book to read. I will always pull this one off the self and ask “Do you like books that have explosions?” I usually get a nod. “Do you like books that are really funny?” Usually another nod. “Then read this, it’s brilliant, I love it and I think you will too.”
Question 1: Who is my favourite character and why? My favourite character in this novel is Kier because he is a strong minded, stoic and disciplined individual who will stop at nothing to achieve his objectives. You can see his strength and willpower when he remains strong even after his dad is murdered. Furthermore, he applies himself to become a lethal agent of destructive force in efforts to find his father’s killers. On the other hand Kier has a softer side that can be happy and thoughful. One example is when he repays a poor person that helped him by buying him some pizza. Kier is the main character in this novel and plays a. really interesting part in the story such as when he embarks on a mission in search for his fathers killers
Question 2: What was the most exciting part and why? The most exciting part of this novel was when Kier was running away from his fathers killers at the beginning of the story. I enjoyed this part because it was really interesting how Kier managed to escape the killers, using his karate skills, even though there were fifteen of them. One knife wielding killer tried to mortally wound him, but Kier used his capabilities to stop his enemy from harming him. I really enjoyed reading this novel and look foward to reading another story from Steve Voake.
I actually quite liked the book, it's about a young boy whose dad is brutally killed sitting next to him in the car. There's lots of simplistic and barely believable twists in the story, which makes me give it two stars only. Cause honestly: the rest of the book is a page-turner! Lots of excitement, nifty fights and barely-escapes. I guess the target audience will completely love it, no matter how unlikely it is that a street drug dealer would also be the same individual involved in a shooting-by, or the Boss of the whole drug-thing being the same man that actually killed his father. Who cares? It's a quick and heart-pumping read with enough who-dunnit-meets-karate-kid.
I would recommend this book to my friends/others because it is very very well written even though its not a very well known author (Steve Voake). Its written about a boy who's father gets murdered and ends up eating recruited for an undercover crime fighting organisation unit. In the end he gets the bad guy into into jail and wants to go have a normal life but when a jewellery store gets robbed and he can't help himself not stepping in to help he knows that he has to accept his new life and move on.
This isn't the best book I've read but if you can use your imagination properly it will seem a bit better. This book is about a very brave and mentally strong kid battleing to find the killers of his father.
