I guess Akari is one of the better trans characters I've seen a manga or anime? But the insistence of everybody switching to he/him pronouns once they figure out she has a penis even after she says that she "just needs a surgery done", and she's a woman in spirit/mind is annoying.
Otherwise an okay volume, especially the part where Akari takes secrets as payment for healing.

My biggest pet peeve is when a man acts as a woman and everyone refers to them as "her," but then it comes out that the person has a penis so we switch to "he" despite the fact that everyone but the main character knew about it and said "she/her/woman" up to that point and switches for... the readers sake or smth?

Samurai Deeper Kyo, Volume 22 finally gives us a glimpse into the Demon Eyes Kyo's true powers, and, wow, is it awesome! When Hotaru is taken out by Shinrei and Yuya is almost at death's door, Kyo burns with rage. While trying to harness what little power he has left in his injured body, Kyoshiro lends Kyo some of his power in order to save Yuya. And then we finally see the demon unleashed!

After all this time, you forget that Kyo is on borrowed time in someone else's body. It is exciting to see the legendary Kyo kicking some ass. Personally, I cannot wait for Kyo to regain his body so that he and Kyoshiro will finally come face to face. Both of them have immeasurable powers, so that will be an epic battle to see.

Yay! Hotaru lives! I love this guy.

This volume is action-packed and full of hilarious comedy throughout. Bon and Hotaru provide a load of laughs, but it's when the fourth and "worst" Emperor finally makes an appearance that the entertainment truly begins.

Akari is ridiculously fun. I really love the element she brings to the other Four Emperors. Each of them is badass in their own right and has a touching story to endear you to them. I cannot wait to see them work together as a team to destroy the enemy.

The scene with Yuya and Akari is freakin' hilarious! I love that she's a transvestite. Funny shiz!

At the end of the volume, the last of the Four Elders, Yuan, makes his first appearance when Hishigi releases four of the most powerful Twelve God Shoguns. I don't know whether to be more creeped out by him or the four flesh-eating monsters.

With Kyo's true body in the hands of the Four Elders and Nobunaga's impending resurrection, the next volume is promising to be insane. I hope to see the Four Emperors go at it with the Four Elders, but I have a feeling the psychotic four cannibals (Akimine Kamijô really likes the numbers four and five!) will be getting a taste of the Emperors first. Can't wait to see the Emperors in action!!

Today’s post is on Samurai Deeper Kyo volume 22 by Akimine Kamijyo. It is published by Tokyopop. As it is the 22nd in the series you need to have read the first 21 to understand the story. The cover has Kyo and all the four emperors on it looking cool. The intended reader is someone who likes samurai manga, lots of characters and character development. There is language, no sex, and lots of violence in this volume. Older teens and adults just to be safe. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

From the back of the book - Hataru’s fight against his half-brother Shinrei continues! In a blind rage, Kyoshiro gives complete control of his body to Kyo and a deadly fight with Shinrei begins. Hotaru most choose between protecting his brother or joining Kyo in killing him. But before the battle is finished, the last of the Four Emperors, Akari, makes a grand entrance…

Review- Finally we have reached Shinrei but he is an ass so he is totally going back on his word to Yuya. Hotaru and Shinrei fight but with Hotaru still injured from his fight with Kyo it does not go well. Kyo and Kyoshiro have one moment of agreement and Kyo gets to kick ass. Yuya finally gets the water dragons out of her heart and then she and Kyo get into it. I will give the short version- Yuya wins. She wins all her fights with Kyo. In one panel he is just accepting that she is going to win and just move on. And by move in I mean kicks Bontenmaru in the head, so he does. Akari makes his/her entrance. Akari is a transvestite. She is also a wonderful healer. But she will only heal you if you tell her a secret. Poor Arika gets the worst of her but she is funny and just like everyone else likes Yuya. Now we get to see the real power of the Four Emperors. I can not wait!

I give this manga a Five out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

The story is a bit dull when it starts off with Yuya and Kyoshiro. But as you progress, the plot thickens and newly cast members introduced piece by piece make this manga unique and a bit of a masterpiece. There are two main story lines: 1- Yuya is looking for the man that killed her brother and 2- Kyo is searching for his true body to exact his revenge. Every other plot in between just adds fuel to the story and lets you learn of the diverse background of many characters, friends or foes. The story itself was captivating and it is a shame that many people know of this series.

The art style refined over time, giving the battle scenes flaws execution. The each character had their own torments and demons to deal with but I would have to say that certain individuals needed more evolution or better backstory. The end was well received and left no stone unturned.

I have watched the anime adaptation and I don't recommend it. It doesn't do it justice.

Do I recommend:
