Gregory of Nyssa was a Christian bishop and saint. He was a younger brother of Basil the Great and a good friend of Gregory Nazianzus. His significance has long been recognized in the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Roman Catholic branches of Christianity.

Gregory along with his brother Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nazianzus are known as the Cappadocian Fathers. They attempted to establish Christian philosophy as superior to Greek philosophy.

I gave this book three stars because some of the insights into Christology, theology proper, and the Trinity are genuinely brilliant. That being said, it is one of the most boring, tedious, and repetitive books that I have ever read.

Overall an excellent argument and refutation of the proponent of extreme arianism. It was a bit boring in long sections which is why I only gave it 4 stars, but I learned a lot about the Arian heresy and can say I know it's flaws in-depth after reading this book. Arianism really made Christianity into a tritheism of three separate gods completely denying the Trinity. Arianism's main flaw is it's inability to comprehend the neoplatonist concept of the trifold nature of God found in his being the One (Father)with an intellectual principal (Word) and universal soul (holy spirit). Gregory in another work of his says that Christianity is the marriage of Hellenism (neoplatonism) with Jewish monotheism and I completely agree, Eunomius fails to see this fact and instead sees Christianity through a pagan perspective.

I think Gregory defends his brother Basil valiantly and successfully. My least favorite of his books but still great. I Read several of his works this last year and chose him as my saint's name when I converted to Catholicism because he is pro neoplatonism and universalism just like me. thank you to my wonderful wife for buying me a collection of his books for my birthday!

Certainly the definitive refutation of Eunomius' heresies, but I found large parts of it long-winded, as perhaps is to be expected.
