Know what happens when you don't bother dating all through college because you're too busy trying to stay on top of your classes? I'll give you a little hint... It starts with the letter V and ends with irginity. Ding, ding, ding... nailed it. Well... at least something got nailed because it wasn't me. Just to be clear, it's not like I've been holding out all these years, waiting around for Mr. Perfect to ride in and sweep me off my feet. And I certainly didn't take a sacred vow of chastity. It just kind of happened...or didn't happen, as the case may be. Know what's even worse than that? Having the bad boy of the NFL, who also happens to be one of my brother's teammates, offer to take care of that pesky problem for me. Which is laughable because if there's one person I can barely tolerate- it's JT Higgins. He may be amazing on the field but he's even more notorious for his bar brawls, drunken antics, and the women who flock to him in droves. It goes without saying that he's keeping some clinic in business with swab tests and penicillin. I've had three long years of practice shutting down his every advance. So ignoring him should be a piece of cake, right? Wrong. JT was given an ultimatum at the end of last season- clean up his act or get traded. For some odd reason, my brother has decided to take him under his wing. So now the golden-haired, green-eyed mountain of muscle is around all the time. Sitting across from me during Thursday night family dinners. Knocking on the door and pushing his way inside when I'm babysitting my niece and nephews. Showing up at the shop where I get coffee on my way to school. If all that weren't bad enough, he has this annoying habit of watching me. What I'd like to know is when his gaze started to feel like a physical caress? It's enough to make me scream. It's also enough to send my pulse skittering and my resolve to the brink of shattering. Because this new and improved JT...the one who doesn't whore around or drink, well- he's more difficult to resist. Especially when all that sexy attention is focused solely on me.

Don't get me wrong - loved JT and Claire's slow-moving romance. I just hate that the significant, horrible people or things done to the main character are NEVER ADDRESSED REALISTICALLY in Susevic's books. The one that bothered me most was in King of Campus, she didn't give Ivy a realistic resolution/absolution to the fact her father and step!other did her an inexplicable injustice that basically scarred her, ruining her adolescence by forcing her to deal with her mom's death, her dad knocking up his girlfriend who then was her stepmom, and moving out of and selling their old house because step mom didn't "want to live in the shadow of another woman." Seriously? Then not even acknowledging that it was a sh* *ty thing to do when he did finally talk about it with Ivy?
This book for me all kinds of annoyed when Ryan and Holly essentially for away with their douche treatment of Claire. She should have told her brothers and had it made public. What if JT had been traded, or cut? Oh, and let's move on to JT's father. That was the lamest resolution between father and son ever, and JT deserved better, as his father deserved to be dragged through h elll for the way he discarded and discounted his younger son his whole life. Again, it's what this writer does - charge for and only think about the HEA without really thinking through the minor, yet significant, details. So that's why even though I liked most of the story, the things this writer leaves unresolved are too major to be overlooked. One star.
21 year old virgin trainee kindergarten teacher meets manwhore football star JT Higgins. She’s his teammates sister and the one girl he can’t get out of his head. Over the last three years he has brazenly propositioned her and she has disgustedly knocked him back.
But the two are thrown together. He’s a reformed character, she goes through a messy breakup and suddenly they strike up a deal to rid her of her vcard status.
This is a wellknown trophe and not one of my favourites. I’m just not into the whole innocent virgin thing, but I do love a sports romance and this was a good one.
Why only three stars?
I liked JT. He was basically a nice guy. He was a bit instalovey though. Why did he like Claire so much? Apart from her great arse that is? They didn’t really have much meaningful dialogue, even after they got together. It meant I didn’t find them very memorable as a couple or totally sink into their connection.
Claire was ok but unremarkable. She was a bit of a unicorn - a hot 21 year old virgin. She was a little bit stuffy for my tastes and her love of kids a bit saccharine sweet for my liking.
NA books always have a bit of angst and personal development: it’s their thing. The angst was here. Again, a criticism would be that there were three to four angsty storylines going on here which is two too many in my book. None of them were resolved enough for my liking. Why did your mum come back? Why did your dad hate on you? Why was Ryan such an arsehole? Will you get traded? Answers, I need answers.
This book also addresses the idea of ‘consent’. This is fine but I found it a bit preachy and the inner monologue a bit repetitive. I could have done without it to be honest. It’s just a bit of a downer. I also think Claire’s need to keep quiet about it perpetuates a problem. You have to bring people to account over these issues otherwise they carry on. You risk other women falling victim to them. I get that life is not like that but if you choose to preach then you have to go the whole hog.
I also found the contract signing scene unrealistic. The flatmate was f*cked in the head if she thought any good would come of inviting Ryan along. Even if she felt Claire was wrong I just don’t see why you would prod the issue with a stick like that. It just seemed unrealistically mean.
All that aside. It was an interesting read and I plan to check out the previous series this is a spin off from.
A spinoff from the Barnett Bulldogs series, sees Liam Garrison's baby sister Claire, navigate a new relationship, being a senior at varsity and the unexplainable pull towards JT Higgins, one of her brother's teammates and the NFL's bad boy. JT earned his reputation from college. Different girl every day. Partying. Fighting. Making the headlines for a whole host of things, none of them good. And in the three years that he has known Claire he has tried, unsuccessfully, to get Claire to go out with him. The methods or way that he asked just solidified her belief that JT was no good and she steadfastly ignored him as best she could. Things change when the GM of his team calls him in and says they'll honor the last year of his contract and if things don't improve with his behavior they're going to trade him. That shakes him up and he changes his life. Only thing that remains the same is him wanting Claire.
Now Claire is sweet as can be but lacking a voice of her own. She annoyed me slightly with not speaking up and out about what she was thinking or going through. She is in a relationship and the guy she's dating was a royal douchebag, and she couldn't see it. Claire was also "unique" in the sense that she was a twenty-one year old virgin. Her boyfriend was placing pressure on her and things did not go well. Jennifer Sucevic did a good job in discussing consent and waiting. What she didn't do a good job on was the constant repetition in their internal monologues. Furthermore, some things were left just dangling in the wind . I wanted a better explanation. Maybe they'd be explained in another book? But as far as I know this is a standalone.
Wasn't the greatest book but was enjoyable enough.
I’m a big fan of the Barnett Bulldogs series. If You Were Mine is centered around Liam’s (he’s from One Night Stand) sister Claire and JT Higgins, the bad boy of the NFL and Liam’s teammate. JT’s drinking, brawling and womanizing has gotten him into some hot water with the team but Liam has taken him under his wing. When the QB of the team does all he can to help you keep your position you listen. It’s been eight months and JT has been on the straight and narrow. He even bought a house near Liam and is over every Thursday for dinner with Liam, his wife Gia and their three kids. Of course the fact that Claire is over ever week may just be a bonus.
Claire has shot down every pass that JT has thrown her way. The fact that he was drunk every time didn’t help. He’s offered her threesomes and straight cut to the chase sex only hook ups. She may think he’s hotter than Hades, but she’s turned off by his offers. What she doesn’t know is that JT is a little obsessed with her and can’t approach her without having a few drinks in him for courage. He knows he doesn’t have a chance with her-she can’t stand him and besides that –Liam has made no secret about the fact that she is strictly off limits to anyone on the team.
Claire is still a virgin at 21. She’s spent so much studying to be a teacher that she hasn’t taken much time for a social life. But she’s been dating Ryan for a couple of months and he is pushing for them to have sex. That’s where JT comes in.
Two unlikely people join forces for operation Lose Virginity. But along the way expect some twists, a few betrayals and a whole lot of screw ups!
While I enjoyed some aspects of this story there were some issues that were hard to overlook. There were several storylines that were brought up for seemingly no reason. Claire's mom for one. Made no sense to have that there. Maybe we will be getting Cullen's story in the future but for this book it added nothing. I did feel drawn into JT and Claire's story but not as much as I was hoping based on the blurb.
Decently cute enough. The switch up from hate to love was sudden so that kind of felt unauthentic. There was also a lot of unnecessary drama and forced tropes in the book that made little to no sense. Could’ve been better but was an ok book.
It was an okayish read I guess. I did have several problems with plot lines and character development, however. I read several reviews before starting the book and several stated things about not understanding why the mom was even mentioned in the book, I wonder that too because I feel like Mrs. Sucevic threw Claire's mom into so much of the book just for nothing to be resolved... So why even have her? I also had a problem with how things were between Jt and his parents, they acted so childish in my opinion and never talked like adults and it was annoying. Jt never confronted his mom for never standing up for him and never confronted his dad for the way he treated him. Lastly, so much of this book repeated; it was constantly mentioned that her mom left, that her brothers were protective, that Jt's parents didn't care about him, that Gia was like her mom but also her sister, etc. It was constantly happening and I feel that it just made me want to continue reading less and less.

It was like the plot needed to continue. Offer the opportunity of seeing Ryan and Holly apologizing to Claire and knowing what JT's dad had against him. It felt like a cliffhanger. I was disappointed.
This wasn't a bad story. It was pretty textbook as far as sports romance goes.
My problem with this book was the writing...
This author likes to use a lot of repetition in her book. In the grand scheme of things, this isn't something that would annoy most people, but anyone that knows me personally knows that I hate repetition. It's just the way my brain works. I start noticing certain words are sprinkled throughout the book multiple times within the same chapter, and for some reason it completely takes me out of the story. I start thinking about why the author doesn't seem to know another synonym for the word she used, or why she didn't switch up the saying or just edit it out completely. In case you are wondering what words and phrases I'm talking about, I'll leave a few below.
The word "gray" was used 33 times to describe the heroine's eyes.
“Piercing gray eyes that I seem to get lost in whenever we come into contact.”
“Long dark shining hair, slender build, smile curving her lips upwards, wide gray eyes staring straight into the camera.”
“Scoffing, she rolls those big gray eyes of hers”
“ There’s just something about having those liquid gray eyes on me that I thoroughly enjoy.”
“Abruptly she dismisses him before turning those big gray eyes on me.”
Do you feel like you got the point that she has big/wide gray eyes? Yeah. I did too.
Then the author upped the ante by mentioning the word "green" for the hero's eyes a total of 34 times. In case you don't believe me, here are a few quotes of how mesmerizing his soft green eyes were.
“I’m so lost in thought that I don’t realize I’m still staring until clear green eyes collide with mine”
“Careful to avoid those unique green eyes, I cautiously glance back out the window only to find my boyfriend standing in the midst of all that testosterone.”
“Just as I’m about to answer Gia, my eyes once again become ensnared by green ones.”
“Especially when I feel that green-eyed gaze of his on me.”
“I can’t deny the spark of energy that ignited when I was staring into those beautiful green eyes of his.”
“ Even though he’s wearing a ball cap pulled low over his forehead, those soft green eyes are almost impossible to conceal.”
Moving on.
We then get to the fact that the heroine loves to snort. She is caught snorting a total of 32 times.
"I almost snort. Alright, he does way more than hint around.”
“At the moment, he’s busy yapping with some of the guys from the offensive line. I almost snort.”
“Hell no. I snort.”
“I can’t help but snort at that thought.”
“I almost snort but rein it in at the last moment.”
“It’s unapologetically that I snort”
At this point, I think you see where I'm coming from when I say I have a hate-hate relationship with repetition. There were also other things, like the fact that the hero and one of the heroine's ex-boyfriends loved to mention that they waited "three years" for her. This was mentioned 39 times. I'll save you the agony of reading any more quotes. There was also the fact that the hero constantly stared at the heroine. All I'm saying is that, once it's said once, you don't need to say it again. Sure you can throw it back in there as a reminder towards the middle and end of the book, but it doesn't need to be said multiple times with in the same chapter. As long as you are not like me, I'm sure you will enjoy this book, but I just had to get that off my chest. Hopefully that didn't come across as too mean because I really did enjoy the book for the most part. I just would have enjoyed it more without all the constant reminders of how intense JT's green eyes were and how beautiful Claire's gray eyes were. I'm done.
I bought this despite reading some of the 3-star reviews that were quite unfavourable about the book.
I don't get the criticism. There was a bit of annoying perseveration in the characters' inner dialogue about how they saw themselves (MW/21-y-o virgin), but not enough to be pressed about.
I'm not a fan of the MW/virgin trope, but this wasn't really the focus of the story IMO. Yes, he had a MW past, but he had tired of that for a number of reasons prior to this relationship starting. So it wasn't my least favourite situation where the "right woman" reforms the "bad boy." He had a terrible family and he acted out against that for years. He finally got to the point where he was over himself, over his family and was able to positively engage with the people in his life, including Claire. Some critical reviewers found the resolution with his father unsatisfactory. Those of us with difficult family members who have found the joy of just saying "peace out" and walking away, know that it's a pretty good resolution. Some folks are just so toxic that simply being rid of them is all you need.
The same is true for the situation with Ryan/Holly - maybe it's unsatisfying that Claire didn't pursue that more or tell Liam. I kind of wish she would have as well. But this is absolutely reality. Those of us who know (personally or professionally) people who have experienced attempted or completed sexual assaults know that often perpetrators are not held accountable, they spin their own tale as victims, and others believe them more than the person they tried to harm. In a "he-said/victim-said" (yes the perpetrator is most often male while the victims have various genders) situation, the perpetrators are most often believed and the victim can expend a lot of energy and not get accountability or justice. It's wrong, but it's reality. And I appreciate that Ms. Sucevic left this thread hanging so that we can attempt to imagine how awful that would feel from Claire's perspective. Often only close friends and subsequent partners, both of whom may or may not believe the story, are the only ones who know. The way JT handled it was perfect (apart from the punching part, but that was understandable.)
Some critics were also bothered by the loose thread with Beverley. That may be a set-up for a subsequent book with Cullum as the focus. But even if it's not, again, it's a realistic portrayal of how things can go in challenging families. Some questioned the reason for including it here. I think showing the challenging family dynamics that both JT and Claire came from is useful to explain why they didn't really get along initially despite their attraction. They both had some sensitive spots in their hearts and they had to mature to the point where they could open their hearts and expose those sensitive areas. They may never fully heal from the wounds their families inflicted on them, but they were able to allow someone else to see that sensitive area and were able to love each other despite that.
So, though this is billed as a MW/virgin trope, it's really a lot more and deeper than that and it is a really good story. I'm glad I ignored the negative reviews and took a chance. I've liked the other books by this author and this did not disappoint.
JT is a professional football player who is a team mate of Claire's brother Liam. Claire is still in college but this is not really what I would consider a college romance like many of Jennifer Sucevic's other books. They have known each other for three years and although Claire liked JT at first, that ended quickly when 1) she saw what a player he was 2) he hit on her a few times with other women on his arm at the time. I have to agree... total turnoff!
What becomes clear is he is still young - only 25 at the time of the story so 22 when they first met. His family is horrible. His early years in pro ball were about rebelling against his family so drinking, women and basically behaving badly. For the last almost year however he stopped. He started hanging out with Claire's brother and his family and stopped drinking and partying.
I really liked a lot of things in this book. How devoted JT was to Claire, I liked Claire in general and how their romance grew. I gave this story 4 stars because of the middle and the end. Overall it was great characters and the story kept you interested. Definitely recommend.
I would still recommend this story however it was not perfect.
Liam’s little sister Claire has grown up and gone to college in Green Bay where Liam plays football. Liam has 4 kids now and Claire is almost done with college. She has an apartment with holly and is dating Ryan but is still a virgin. Ryan is a douche and one night he tries to get in Claire’s pants when she’s not ready and doesn’t stop when she tells him to. Jt is on Liam’s football team and lives nearby. He has always had a thing for Claire but he wasn’t relationship ready till the last six months. He was always getting into fights and sleeping with women that didn’t mean anything. But he’s cleaned up his act and he spends a lot of time with Liam and his family. The night of the Ryan incident, Claire calls jt to come pick her up. They go back to his place and she tells him everything. The virginity and all that. He asks to be the one to take it. She stays there for some time then heads back to her apartment where holly is screwing ryan! So she packs her shit and stays with jt. She used to hate jt but now they’re gonna be a thing. They keep their little tryst a secret from Liam and finally 70% into the book they sleep together. Lots of lead up to a not so exciting whatever. Anyway, holly finds a new roommate so she wants to meet up with Claire to sign off on the lease. Clair brings jt. Holly brings Ryan. Ryan calls Claire a frigid bitch and jt beats the shit out of him in public and a bunch of people record it for the Internet. So then Liam shows up with their other brother Cullum and Claire lies about her relationship with jt but Liam isn’t mad because jt was defending Claire. Then a few days later Claire comes clean with cullum and he’s all go get your man so she goes and gets her man and Liam isn’t mad at all and then HEA.

This was a really great read. Jennifer Sucevic has created another book that has wonderful characters and story. The book is told in alternating Points of View between Claire and JT. Claire Garrison is Liam Garrison's little sister from the book One Night Stand. JT Higgins is on the football team Green Bay with Liam. JT has been partying and going out with all types of women for the past 3 years and during his college days. The team manager has let him know that he needs to straighten up or he will be traded. Liam stands up for him, takes him under his wing, and helps him as much as he can.
Claire has disliked JT for some time because they would end up at the same events and he would get drunk and then try to get her to go home with him. She's always been so busy trying to get through and do well in school that she hasn't really dated much. JT has thought since day one that Claire was the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. He knew that Liam wouldn't want her dating any of his teammates so that's why he would only hit on her once he had been drinking. Claire has finally started dating a guy but he's not the right guy.
Claire fights her attraction to JT and never really gives him a chance. She just believes that he's a player and womanizer and doesn't know or want anything to do with him. JT doesn't really try to show his true self. When he finally gets a chance, he shows Claire that he's wonderful and really cares about her. Claire finds out that perceptions aren't always true.
This ebook is 280 odd pages long but the story ends around page 250; why do I care about the page count? Because the ending is abrupt. We read approximately 200 pages of "I hate him I hate him I hate *squealing breaks* why won't you bang me why won't you bang me please please bang me please how bout now bang me" and then boom they fall, drama ensues, they split, they're sad, HEA! The antagonist doesn't even get true repercussions, JT's future is still dangling a bit and now one punched his dad in the face (wholly disappointing). 50 pages is not sufficient story arc time unless you're marketing a novella.
Oddly, I still liked the book. Claire is that young woman trying to figure out relationships without ignoring her instincts. She's annoying as hell in her obviously infatuated hatred but has a few good points on her side. JT is a remarkably good MMC. If you don't like him, you don't like anyone. I don't like anyone and if this guy was real I'd be like Bess trying to take care of him. The book has a sprinkling of good humor, an interesting antagonist plot thread, ok resolution and the ever important HEA. It's a pretty fast read so I wouldn't count it out entirely but it's not the best representation of the brothers friend/football/enemies to lovers tropes.
I have such a weird brain sometimes, I love Jennifer Sucevic and read the earlier books in this series bought this and then never read it. And I can't even imagine why because it is chock full of some of my favourite tropes. Sports, brothers-best friend, help me lose my V card, he falls first. Really, what more could I want? And yet I just never could open it.
JT and Claire had this weird tension between them after being thrown together for the last three years. And I loved the tension between them. Especially getting JT's point of view and seeing what he was actually thinking each time he hit on Claire and had her shoot him down. I really loved that most of the story's drama was based around Claire and didn't really have much to do with JT's past.
The only complaint I have is that it felt like it finished too abruptly. The epilogue was awesome, but I wanted to see a few people get dropped on their heads. And some of the secrets come out and some of the family loose ends get resolved. It's like I was expecting all these things to be building to something and then one of them got resolved and the rest just got wiped away.
This book was sooooo good. I wouldn’t change one thing about it AT ALL.
I loved having both POV’s because personally I like reading the guys pov more. Just the way he thought and talked about Claire was absolute perfection. I could cry thinking about how cute this book was and everything was just amazing.
Although, I think it was a little weird bringing her mother into the storyline when we never got an introduction for her and the story with the mom was never really finished but either way it didn’t affect the book. JT Higgins is a perfect man and I love that he’s not a douche and actually cares for Claire.
The thing I love most was that they were together for almost the whole book and I didn’t feel like I was reading their story separately. It felt like I was reading their story develop together in their relationship. And when they had their fight there wasn’t much distance and we were able to see them back together after a short while.
Overall, this book was absolutely amazing and I really wouldn’t change one part of it. I finished it in a day and I love how the author wrote the book.
An enjoyable story. JT was a good broody character. The flat mate, Holly, turned out to be awful (she turned her back on her best friend just so she could get the guy).
Plot summary: JT Higgins, the NFL bad boy, has had his eye on Claire Garrison, the little sister to his team mate, for three years. He’s cleaned up his act and now he wants the girl.
Claire had a boyfriend of two months who was pressuring her into giving up her “V Card”. The boyfriend goes too far at a frat party and doesn’t stop when Claire tells him to. Claire manages to get away and promptly breaks up with him.
Claire turns to JT for help and a place to crash when her best friend and flat mate, Holly, starts dating the ex-boyfriend two days after they broke up.
JT slowly proves himself to Claire and shows her that he can take care of her. Claire’s nosy brothers try to get in the way towards the end of the book but Claire comes to her senses and is honest about her feelings for JT. Claire and JT come clean about their true feelings for each other and start a proper relationship. Happy ever after.

JT Higgins was told at the end of the last season to tone down his partying at the end of the season or the team will trade him because he is too much trouble. The quarterback Liam Garrison has taken JT under his wing and included him in family activities since he bought a house in the same submission.
Claire Garrison dislikes JT Higgins since he always makes tacky comments when they are in the same place. Claire changed her mind because JT heled her out when her now ex-friend tried to pressure her into doing something she didn’t want to do.
Claire needed time to grow up and go to college because the first time JT met her was when she was 17 and he knew that she was way too young but things changed when she realized he was done with his party days.
This was my first sports romance read, and overall, I really enjoyed it. It was a fun read and kept my interest, but let me just say...
-JT was a fun bad boy type, but his constant descriptions of Claire's body got annoying after the first few times. It started to feel like overkill more than appreciation, which I think is what the author was going for. Instead, I just got annoyed with basically the same description of her ass and boobs and skipped over those sections. -The confrontation between Claire and her roommate felt so awkward, and I just couldn't imagine the conversation playing out like that in real life. Just my opinion, of course, but that part was really cringe-worthy.
Overall, I really did enjoy this book and recommend it if you're looking for a fun sports romance.

It was ok in its lane, nothing you've not read before. He's a former manhoe, she's a virgin (and it becomes this annoyingly huge thing that she's yet to lose her virginity-). He's an athlete, she's a team mate's little sister. Her brothers are once more extremely interested in whom she's dating, or not.
I liked that he holds off sexing her up to begin their relationship.
There is something going on with her mother, as well as his father and brother, but those threads were left a little unresolved, I never really figured out what their deal was. Why his father is like that, where the mom had been. His brother seemed to be up to something but he just disappeared.
This is a spin-off of the Barnett Bulldogs series featuring Liam's little sister, Claire, and his teammate J.T. I normally really enjoy books by this author but this one didn't do it for me. There was (IMO) an excessive amount of repetitious inner monologue going on with the H and h that got old - towards the end I just started swiping through it. Also, even though I think the message about consent was a good one I felt it was really overdone to the point that it felt preachy. Still was a good read, just not great.
loved it! loved the emotional pace .....no major drama ....just the right amount .....just loved.....became one of my favorite books .....appreciated the heights of both main lead....its rare they are well match instead they usually have huge differences....so good for change and don't get me started on emotions loved every second also the steamy scene right amount of talk and description.....okay usually it a turn off for me that at the end the couple dosw not get married and have kid but story that good gets 5 star
Confession time—I jumped into this series with just this book (who needs context anyway? 🤷♀️). The story? A mix of interesting and cliché, like ordering your favorite comfort food but knowing exactly how it’ll taste. Did I have fun while reading? Absolutely! 🍿 Was I emotionally wrecked or destined to think about these characters at 2 AM? Ehh… not so much.
If you're looking for an entertaining read that won’t take up permanent residence in your brain, this one’s a solid choice. Enjoyable? Yes. Unforgettable? Not quite. But hey, sometimes that’s exactly what you need! 📖
- I wonder what color Claire’s hair is - I wonder if Claire is a virgin - I wonder what team his brother plays for - I wonder if he used to be a player
I wonder what happened with the mom. No I seriously wonder. What was the point of the plot? We didn’t even get to meet her or see any sort of reaction when they talked to her. Also sorry Callum? I think that’s his name. Would not have that reaction to his mom coming back, he was distraught and angry in Liam’s book. I guess we will never know why he was okay with it. CAUSE THE STORYLINE WAS POINTLESS
Over all the story was cute. I didn't like the way the author left two sun stories dangling. There was no real resolve between the Garrison kids and their mother. There was also no final resolve between JT and his family. The author left us thinking that Ryan got the best of them both in the end with closure to that story either. But at least there was a HEA for the Claire and JT.....
