It's a snow day for Libby and Becca! That means making snow angels, sledding, and looking for animal tracks, which leads them to some hungry birds. Libby and Becca decide to help the birds. They build them a tree house to keep them warm and provide snacks so they won't be hungry. Aligned to Common Core standards and correlated to state standards. Calico Kid is an imprint of Magic Wagon, a division of ABDO.
So much to like here: Libby is shown to be full of great ideas; she has a loving, supportive family unit; she doesn't give up even when her initial tries don't work out (realistically, the girls are NOT able to do this on their own--that would have put me off if she had been some genius carpenter who built this amazing bird house); she loves nature; and the illustrations are adorable. Big win all around.
Libby loves to explore, observe, and is a problem solver. When she and her best friend, Becca, find out that there is a snow day--they are off for an adventure. Following a series of tracks, they come upon some bright red, and hungry, birds. Together Libby and Becca work through the design process to engineer a solution for their newfound friends.
Cute story about friendship and helping others (birds) that hits the point of you don't always succeed the first time you try to solve a problem, but to keep trying. Also, there can be more than one solution to a problem. Great story to use for STEM.
My child is delving in to chapter books, but I convinced her that sometimes it's ok to read an "easy" book instead of always challenging herself. And this sweet tale of two friends solving problems hit just the spot on a rainy afternoon.
