The Comfort of Secrets

Rate this book

Cat Mendoza needs a win. After a business failure and years of dating the wrong men, she’s ready to turn things around.

First she must convince the residents of Sweet Lake, Ohio, that she’s taking her responsibilities seriously. As the events director of the newly restored Wayfair Inn, she has the support of her best friends, Linnie and Jada. But everyone else—including her overprotective mother and the well-meaning Sweet Lake Sirens—can’t help but chime in with advice about her plans, her apparently too-tight clothes, and her undeniable attraction to Ryan D’Angelo, the charming ad exec hired to promote the inn.

Cat knows she should keep Ryan at a distance, but she’s drawn closer by the heartbreak he tries to hide. Will uncovering his secrets derail the new life Cat hopes to achieve…or will she gain something to cherish forever?

The Comfort of Secrets is a must for those lazy summer days. First meet the Sirens. An eclectic and well intentioned group of ladies that have some unusual quirks. Now meet Cat Mendoza. Beautiful and full of energy, but unlucky in the career department and finding love. As the event coordinator for the newly restored Wayfair Inn of Sweet Lake, Ohio, life is about to get a little more interesting. In walks Ryan D’Angelo from out of town and he’s turning heads. He has a story and a reclusive mother that Cat and the Sirens find mysterious and comes full circle to Sweet Lake.

This has plenty of twists to keep the story moving along. A great cast of characters, a hint of a new romance, and the unexpected revelation of family.

The escape to Sweet Lake is like an easy, breezy vacation you don’t want to end.

It is easy to see why Christine Nolfi is one of my favourite authors. Her gift of storytelling makes it a delight to pick up one of her books and become totally captivated for hours on end.
The Comfort of Secrets is a wonderful addition to her Sweet Lake series.
This story focuses on Cat, one of the three young women who work hard at keeping the newly restored Wayfair Inn up and running. She is the recently promoted and unorganized Event Planner. Overwhelmed and in need of assistance Cat reaches out to a college friend, owner of a Marketing company.
Gorgeous and charming ad exec Ryan D'Angelo arrives not only to help with promoting the Inn but also to unintentionally sweep Cat off her feet. Will his complicated and painful past keep them from being together?
I adore the characters and settings that this author creates, especially the wacky and wonderful antics of The Sirens. It felt absolutely captivating to be so emotionally involved with the characters from beginning to end. I felt like I was visiting old friends and making new ones.
I look forward to the next book in the Sweet Lake series!

This is an ideal summer/beach read. I sat on a sunny afternoon in my garden and got lost in Sweet Lake. As previous books by this author I always find myself getting absorbed into the story and the characters.

After reading book one I was looking forward to reading Cat Mendozas story and the author certainly didn't disappoint me. I was so rooting for her and Ryan.

Another captivating and delightful story from a natural story teller. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

I could not put this book down. From the beginning to the end ‘The Comfort of Secrets (A Sweet Lake Novel Book 2)' will captivate you. The story line continues around the Wayfair Inn located in Sweet Lake, Ohio with the familiar friends like Linnie, Jada, and my favorite, the Sweet Lake Sirens. There are twists and turns you will not see coming. Walk with Cat Mendoza as she tries to prove herself a responsible and successful businesswoman. The winding path she takes shows how connected we all really are. This was an emotional journey that I am so glad I took. Christine Nolfi is a gifted storyteller that blends friendship, abusive tragedy, compassion, love, and the thread of life that connects us all in some way. I highly recommend this book.

In this return to Sweet Lake’s Wayfair Inn we revisit characters we know, learn more about them, and meet new ones. You will hurt and you will rejoice with Cat and all of the characters as they struggle with past trouble and present choices—sometimes making choices that defy expected common sense, yet resonate with heart and truth. A core truth is that living well is about who you choose to share your life with. By the end of The Comfort of Secrets you will feel part of a warm, triumphant hug celebrating life and love, including the scars that are part of what makes us who we are.

I loved, loved, loved this book! This is the 2nd book in Ms. Nolfi's Sweet Lake series and she has outdone herself with this one. A combination of romance with a touch of suspense and drama, it will keep you turning the pages till the end. The cast of characters continues from Sweet Lake with a few newcomers to the series. You have to love the kind hearted, wise, yet crazy Sirens! I love all of the characters in this book, especially Cat. She is strong, yet gentle and kind. She doesn't give herself enough credit, with almost anything , but she is coming along nicely. These characters are true to life and they literally come to life in your mind. I would love to see a movie of this book, I would be thrilled. The writing is divine, as always and the story flows fast, but not too fast. You will become engrossed in this series, I know that I am. I can't wait for book 3 to come out, but alas, I have to wait. I felt elated at times, sad at others and a touch of anger in places. A book should make us feel, don't you agree? Here are a few of my favorite quotes: " One of the most difficult lessons we learn is how to soar- above our doubts and perceived failings, beyond the abilities we believe limit us. " "Family is about the people we choose to hold close in our lives." There are so many that I will let you order a copy and just read this book for yourselves. You will love this series! Read Sweet Lake first and then definitely this one too! Loved it!!

MY REVIEW OF "THE COMFORT OF SECRETS"  by Christine Nolfi

"THE COMFORT OF SECRETS by Christine Nolfi is the second book in the "Sweet Lake " series.  This is a delightful and charming story that describes the Wayfair Inn in Ohio and the quirky, complex and complicated characters. Many of the characters are the same as in the first book.

The genres for this story are Women's Literature, Literature, Romance, and a touch of Mystery. I love the different layers in this story.  The timeline is mostly in the present and mostly takes place in Ohio surrounding the Wayfair Inn, which is undergoing major renovations.

Lizzie, Jada, and Cat are all involved in the new and improved Wayfair Inn. Cat has been promoted to the events director. There is enough money to bring in a major advertising company and a friend has offered reduced rates. The friend sends Ryan, a top advertising executive to help put the Wayfair Inn on the map. There will be a big concert and many events. Cat and Ryan  seem to have an attraction. Ryan lives with his troubled mother Julia, and takes care of her. There seem to be major secrets in Ryans's and Julia's lives.

My favorite characters, "The Sweet Lake Sirens", an eccentric and quirky group of older women who put sisterhood first, and doing a special secret kindness are quite active in this story. At times some of them non-intentionally causing trouble, and at other times they are helpful and protective. I find that they are amusing and have big hearts.

Christine Nolfi describes family, friends, love, support and hope.  I would recommend this enchanting, feel good story highly. I received this ARC from Lake Union Publishing, and Christine Nolfi for my honest review and opinion. Happy Reading.

A cast of endearing, delightful, and sometimes hilarious characters, and the cozy setting of small-town Sweet Lake, Ohio, in THE COMFORT OF SECRETS, buffets a darker and poignant thread of suspense as unresolved past heartbreak reappears, testing friendships and family relationships alike. Toward the end, when the shocking truth is revealed, and lives are endangered, you will find yourself racing through the pages to the thoughtful and ultimately satisfying end. The second in the Sweet Lake series, don't miss it!

"The Comfort of Secrets" (Sweet Lake series book 2) by Christine Nolfi

A truly magnificent addition to the Sweet Lake series.

The Wayfair hotel is being renovated and thriving. Linnie has promoted her two best friends, Jada and Cat. Amongst the three they have begun to create a truly remarkable plan to increase patronage, put the Wayfair back on the map, employ more people, and hopefully get the town of Sweet Lake back on its feet.

This is Cat's story. She finally meets the man of her dreams. And he has met the woman of his dreams. But there are many issues which complicate their situation. Are they headed for heartbreak or can they work through things and work toward the future they want?

Ryan has a shaky and difficult past; a mother with many secrets and who is an abuse survivor; a father he only knows as an abuser; and many questions about his past and extended family, amongst other things. Getting answers from his mother...not so easy. She has many secrets of her own...some that could lead to heartbreak or quite the opposite. Living in fear and holding in so many secrets is a tough way to live and to survive.

The Sirens are back in full force. Initially they want to help the Wayfair by teaching classes as part of their activities schedule. Who wouldn't want to attend classes on natural medicine from your spice rack? Or how to reach loved ones who have died, that you are angry and you want to have the last word? Or better yet: "Sex in the Twilight Years: Myth or Magic?" In fact, they would like to fill up the events calendar for the next year!! Cat questions the validity of these in general, but as family friendly classes?? She has reasons to be concerned. But they are the Sirens.

There is a teen band that is planned to play an outdoor concert at the Wayfair. It is becoming the most popular attraction Sweet Lake has had in decades. With a blog, an electronic skateboard with bungee cords, and one player that has to have steak at every meal...it is easy to see where things might become a bit...um...difficult and overwhelming with this crew.

And the old tree house that Linnie refurbished for her brother? Well now it is adult accessible. A great time out place. For talking. Okay and maybe a few kisses. But when Cat and Ryan bump into...her mother and few other Sirens as they are leaving, well, you can guess what they think happened and what rumors may (or may not) be passed along...and the potential repercussions. Let's just say tempers flair, questions are asked, and some Sirens are interested in more than what might have happened in the tree house. Damage control: too late or still an option??

This novel has everything from the Sirens acts of kindness in secret, supporting and helping others through difficult times, and their strong sense of friendship and sisterhood. There is a mystery surrounding one of the sirens, Ryan, Ryan's mother Julia, and a few other characters. When it comes to a head will things work out or totally fall apart for everyone involved?

This novel is full of life lessons, lost loves, the strength of family, familial issues, romance, the strength and benefits of friendship, self-growth, secrets, openness, honesty...but at the root of it all there is love.

Christine Nolfi has written such genuine and realistic characters. They all have their flaws, but wonderful strengths that help guide them on their journey. She has written a gem of a novel with so many subplots that are blended so masterfully that the major plot just seems to have numerous aspects to it.

She has written a novel full of humor, of honesty, with realism, with meaning, and with strength. At the core there is always friendship and love.

The author clearly writes from her heart and has created another enervating novel that wil captivate the reader from beginning to end. A novel the reader won't want to put down. A novel for every woman late teens to late adulthood. A novel not to be put on your TBR pile, but one to be read now (or next).

Fall in love with Sweet Lake and your favorite characters all over again with "The Comfort of Secrets."

Rating: 4.85
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

(My only issue: waiting for the next book in the series!! I even re-read "Sweet Lake" (book 1) before reading this novel. It was just as great the second time around...maybe even better.)

This second book in the Sweet Lake series begins with Cat's determination to restart her career and renovate the Wayfair Hotel. I won this book in a Goodreads contest so I didn't know the backstory of the Sirens-- a group of women who have such a strong bond of friendship that they are more like sisters. This book was very well-written and its strong themes of love, a family's dark secrets, loss, and redemption make it a great read. I am looking forward to the next book, which will be released in July, 2018.

3.5 stars. "The Comfort of Secrets" is the story of Cat, a young woman trying her best to show the small town that she grew up in that she can be an adult with true responsibilities that she can take seriously. After developing a reputation for being fun loving and fancy free with no regard for consequences, Cat has a long road ahead of her. Luckily she has some good friends in her corner who are pulling for her to figure out her career and her romantic life.

This is the second book in the Sweet Lake series by Christine Nolfi but you don't need to read the first book in order to enjoy this book. Many of the same characters from the first book appear but Cat is really at the center of this book.

The characters in the book were great. I loved Cat! She's the kind of scrappy character that you can't help but to root for her. The reader knows early on that Cat really has changed and she really is ready to take on being the event planner at the inn in town but almost everyone around her seems convinced that she is going into this endeavor with her eyes closed and want to make sure that she knows that they think about this.

You're also pulling for the love match in the book! Ryan comes to Sweet Lake as the ad-exec charged with getting the inn some business through some slick advertising. Love is the last thing on his mind. The love between Cat and Ryan feels a little insta-love but works relatively well. Ryan is more of a realist but Cat is a dreamer and this seems to fit in her character a little more. The love between them is very sweet, especially when we see the plans that Cat carries out to give Ryan back some of the childhood that we learn he missed out on.

This is a sweet romance with a quirky set of characters. This book was a lot of fun!

This is the second book in the Sweet Lake series. This is one that you'll want to pick up when you can read and not worry about doing anything else. It will pull you in tight that you wont want to put it down. I loved the mystery aspect with the twist and turns. It definitely made it more interesting to try to figure out how it would all end. I was really excited to read Cat's story and it didn't disappoint me at all. This was a great book that I highly recommend.

Book 2 in the Sweet Lake series was just as wonderful as the first book in the series. I was hoping it would be Cat's story and it was, and it did not disappoint. In this book there is not just a love story but also a little drama. The drama involves Ryan and his mother and their horrific story of abuse and the man they have been hiding from since Ryan was a child. You will cry reading this book and you will also laugh out loud. The perfect mixture. Throw in a bunch of ecclectic older ladies and you have one dynamic book. Such wonderful, in depth characters. Best friends, sisters practically. Looking forward to book # 3.

Welcome back to Sweet Lake! The stories of Linnie, Cat and Tilda continue in The Comfort of Secrets. This book focuses primarily on Cat, the event planner for the Wayfair Inn. As she embarks on a relationship with the man she has been waiting for all of her life ...long-hidden secrets threaten to sink it before it even gets started. The Sweet Lake Sirens, ladies of Sweet Lake with unique personalities and loyalty, with an affinity towards quirkiness, are also affected by these same secrets ...and these secrets can break your heart. But don't let the Sirens fool you....they have their own strengths which may surprise you!!

I really appreciated and enjoyed the character growth through the sensitive and creative writing of author Christine Nolfi. The storyline begun in Sweet Lake carries on beautifully with romance, family drama, and mystery. A great sequel in a series destined to make the reader want to know more about the lives of the characters of Sweet Lake. I recommend this series for the reader who loves to follow characters through the ups and down of their lives.

The story continues with Cat’s turn. With each book set in Sweet Lake it is like coming home again. I cannot wait to step foot into the wonderfully charming little town and reconnect with my friends again. It is wonderful that each book is its own story with a Happily Ever After yet the characters are familiar.

There is family drama, amazing friendships, romance, and so much love. I love the family secrets and how protective everyone is of each other. They keep secrets, tell secrets, and go to the ends of the world to protect each other. The Sirens are the queens of the town and seem to be able to keep everyone in line and pull the strings needed for everyone to find their happy endings.

Filled with twists and turns that you will never see coming. A very hard book to put down and I hated to see it end. I have fallen in love with the small town of Sweet Lake, Ohio and it's residents. Welcome back to Sweet Lake. This second book follows one of 3 besties, this time its Cat's turn. Even though this book is a series, it can stand by itself. Although, I recommend reading the first one also. Ms. Nolfi did not disappoint. Her writing feels like a friend telling you a story over a cup of coffee.

Cat and Ryan have instant chemistry! But, there are a lot of secrets they need to confront before making permanent plans. These secrets are painful, and gives the reader a glimpse into how far a Mom will go, and how no one is left unscarred.

Thank you Ms Nolfi for the ARC. This review is my personal opinion of the book.

The second book in the Sweet Lake series picks up the three friends at the Wayfair Inn in the midst of getting ready for a big fall concert. The renovations are continuing, a big ad campaign is underway and for Cat, romance is in the air. While the first book concentrated on Linnie, this book is Cat's story.
This book was a little darker in tone, but there was great balance. The secrets kept by the characters spun a web of intrigue and the romance was spicy. And in the middle of it all were those eccentric and awesome Sirens. Can't wait for the next installment!

I love Christine Nolfi's Sweet Lake series! Book two, The Comfort of Secrets, is my favorite so far. Nolfi creates such lovable characters. The protagonist in this installment is Cat, a feisty lady who is trying to do right and prove herself in the business world all the while keeping an eye out for love. Ryan is a business partner who comes crashing into her life with a past that is full of secrets, most of which he is not even aware of. Their romance is strained by Ryan's mother's seeming unwillingness to let Cat or her family into her life. The story comes to a head when a man from Ryan's past comes into town, threatening all that Ryan holds dear. You do not want to miss this one, folks!

Are Secrets Really Comfortable? In this tale, we meet Cat and Ryan. And Ryan... both has secrets and has people holding secrets from him. In at least some ways, I can certainly identify with Ryan due to at least *some* similar situations (though to be clear, not an abusive parent myself). In this tale of family triumphing all, the more pessimistic among us might be tempted to label it as much fantasy as any swords and sorcery book, but aren't romance books supposed to take us out of the real world and give us a happily ever after? And in that, Nolfi does a great job. The Sirens may be a bunch of wacky old biddies, but they do form a memorable cast of supporting characters - ones who almost steal the show from the central couple. Very much enjoyed this book, and very much looking forward to reading the other two books in the trilogy. (Yes, I started in the middle. :D)

What a great follow up novel in the Sweet Lake series. Cat is now the events director at the Wayfair Inn and the Sweet Lake Sirens have lots of plans for both the Inn and Cat. Christine Nolfi captivates you with this story of several characters dealing with painful events in their past. She writes with humor and compassion. Can't wait for the next story as there is one more BFF to meet her heart's desire. Sure to bring a smile as you relax on the beach or on the porch.

I loved going back to Sweet Lake, Ohio and the Wayfair Inn. I loved catching back up with the Sirens! Those ladies are awesome!!! Cat is working at the Wayfair with Linnie and Jada. She is in charge of the events at the Wayfair Inn. She asks a college friend at an ad agency for help but she sends Ryan in her place. Sparks fly between Cat and Ryan. Ryan has some big secrets in his past and Cat stumbles across them. Can they solve their problems and make their love last? This is a wonderful story of love, family, suspense, and secrets. The Comfort of Secrets is the second installment in Christine Nolfi new fiction series set in the fictional town of Sweet Lake, Ohio. The first book was centered on Melinda Petronia Wayfair (Linnie) who was left to manage her family's Wayfair Inn. This story revolves around Cat Mendoza, newly designated marketing manager and one of the three series heroines. The Inn is beginning to get out of the red. The first stage of the new capital investment is about complete. And Cat has sought assistance from her college roommate, Miri Blum owner of renowned PR firm Adworks.

Miri is set to come spend a week with Cat to help her sort through plans for the coming twelve months. However, on the day Miri is set to arrive she is overtaken with severe morning sickness and sends her right hand man, Ryan D'Angelo instead. There is an instant connection between Cat and Ryan which they try to ignore, keeping their relationship professional. The main task for his work at the Inn is the preparation for the upcoming fall concert starring Ohio's own Midnight Boyz. Making this event a success would help to assure a rosy future for the Inn.
Thus far their rooms are sold out for that weekend and ticket sales for the event continue to climb. Now if only Cat can juggle all the balls she has in the air she can feel confident that she will not let Linnie down.

Buried beneath the events taking place are secrets that will rise to the forefront with the crescendo peaked on the night of the concert. How will these secrets affect the visitors to Sweet Lake and what will it mean for the town residents themselves?

Written in flowing prose, Ms. Nolfi once again brings the town and its residents to life. The characters are richly created and the story has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing and on the edge until the very end. I highly recommend this book!
