Three delightful kitten stories to treasure in one book, from best-selling author Holly Webb. Includes The Kitten Nobody Wanted, The Frightened Kitten, and The Stray Kitten.
Holly Webb is one of Britain's best-loved children's writers. She has written over a hundred books for children, and her work has been translated into over thirty languages. Holly lives in Tilehurst, just outside of Reading, Berkshire, with her husband, three children and several cats.
I bought this for my daughter, but I have to admit, I love reading these.
The first story, The Kitten Nobody Wanted, is a story that made me cry. It is about a girl mourning the loss of her beloved old orange cat and the mixed up feelings she has when she starts to like a kitten. She feels like she is betraying her beloved old cat by beginning to love this new kitten. This story handles the grief of losing a pet so well, and honestly helped me with my feelings of grief over the loss of my own beloved orange cat.
The Frightened Kitten has a girl dealing with her best friend moving away, and the girl feeling very alone. She gets a kitten to help cope with the lonely feeling. The kitten gets lost after it has an altercation with two older cats, but is eventually found. There is some good information about why neutering cats is a good idea (other than population control, also good for keeping male cats from being too aggressive) and information on cat flaps that I was not aware of.
The last story, The Stray Kitten, is about a girl who desperately wants a kitten that lives in the barn of a local farmhouse. The kitten's family is trapped by an animal rescue, but the little orange kitten is left behind and the little girl must save her.
Overall, a solid collection of kitten centered books that also hit on things that kids would be dealing with like death of a pet or a friend moving away.
