Gunfighters, Myths, Magic, and an Impossible Quest Years after nuclear war has devastated the world and split reality, a group of gunfighters have come from the western radiation zones. Through the undead, past dead, and soon-to-be dead, they've trekked the apocalypse, obeying a forgotten code. On an impossible quest to find those who came before them, these fighters are searching through the remnants, hoping to prove the myth of Safe Haven. Safe Haven: A sanctuary of safety and light, of honor and duty. A Refuge for survivors. Also: A den of darkness and danger, where murder and magic go hand-in-hand. Our Leader Alexa has culled her companions from the dwindling herd of humanity based on their skills with a gun, sensing that they alone may have the strength to make the journey. Each battle fought at her side has tightened their bonds until those with her will let nothing stand in their way. For the gunfighters, the quest is about redemption and rebuilding what they've lost. For the daughter of Adrian Mitchel, the quest is a relentless hunt for her missing family. Will they verify the myth or will the apocalypse keep them locked in the western wastelands forever? I read A Prelude (Alexa's Travels) on the 1st November last year and I found it intriguing, I liked all the characters and the world in which they found themselves. The decision I had to make was did I continue on and read this book or go back and start with Adrian's Life After War, I couldn't decide so I emailed the author who unfortunately never got back to me. Anyway I decided since I'd already read the prelude I'd continue on with this. It gives us more of what we got a taste for in the prelude. There's so much here, the world in 2016 after the war of 2012 is so different full of evil, hope, magic and all manner of creatures. Alexa assembles her team and sets off on her quest it's just a shame we have to wait until 2015 for the second book The Killin' Fields of Nebraska.
I could not skim through this book fast enough. It is devoid of all life. It's filled with so many words, but so little plot. All the characters are lifeless, so reading each and every word benefits no one. I gained nothing. There was nothing here. The story is so bland and shallow. Every development in the plot is so underwhelming. Like I just don't care. There's nothing to care about, okay? There's nothing at all to sink my teeth into.
So if your name is Alexa and your job gives you a reading challenge where one book you have to read contains a character who shares your name, pass this one up. There were like 3 other books that existed with an Alexa, so go read one of those instead or do us all a favor and write a new book featuring an Alexa. Save all of us from this hell.
I was impressed with the different mythical creatures that were woven into the trials and tribulations of the main characters. You can't go wrong with a good post-apocalyptic turn the bad guy into good and save the world kind of story!
Great read. I really wish I could afford to buy the series and binge read them all. I was a little confused at first, but quickly got drawn in to the story.
This book has a bit of everything in it! There’s magical creatures, vampires and world changing events. It’s a good storyline but didn’t grab me unfortunately. Krys gave an amazing performance, especially with her singing abilities.
Couldn't get into this story to begin with. Not a lot of explanation as to who she was and why she collected men. Kept going with it to see if it improved. It didn't for me.
This book has so much worldbuilding and backstory, but the moment-to-moment action is written awkwardly and the whole thing feels drawn out and unengaging.
This story picks up after Safe Haven has left the shores of America. But Alexa has unfortunately been left behind. 5 years later, with her freedom restored, Alexa is now seeking to find Safe Haven, her father Adrian, and the new & improved America.
Assembling 6 hard-ass men who share her dream of finding Safe Haven, they set off on their quest. It means battling against the soldiers of a corrupt new government, bandits, murderers, and a pissed off & vengeful Mother Nature. These are the first of the many challenges, adventures and battles that they encounter while searching for Safe Haven.
An action packed book, complete with the thoughts, feelings and challenges of Alexa and her 6 Eagle warriors is a read worthy of your time. Once started I bet you will not be able to put this book down, even at 1:00 a.m. on a work night no less !
I would have given this book 5 stars but the text errors in the book often lead into mismatched sentence structure thus causing the reader to stop in an attempt to figure out what the sentence is supposed to mean.
Amazing how one word unknowingly altered by predictive text can screw up a sentence or idea so badly. Personally, I find predictive text to be a major pain in the #€€ !
Being a professional author means that the job isn't finished until all the spelling & text errors have been corrected BEFORE the book is put out there for the masses ( hopefully masses) to enjoy. Overall, it's one hell of a GREAT BOOK. I RECOMMEND IT. !!!!
When I stumbled upon Angela White's book,at first I wasn't quite sure it was for me...the cover and description makes it clear there is some darkness to this written work, but captivating none of the less! I took a peek, read a little, read a little more and there you have it... I was hooked! A wonderfully well written story that gives new perspective of life, war and survival...with a fantastic magical fantasy twist! (was that a tongue twister?) Put a gal in charge, who's one tuff cookie, well...even better! (Has nothing to do with my main characters being girls... really) Alexa is one tough, clever chic that knows her stuff and knows how to lead. The adventure she takes you on, building her force, fighting her battles and learning some lessons,no wonder men flock to and follow her!
I love magic, I love fantasy and I absolutely loved Angela White's (A. White) Bone Dust & Beginnings!
Had I not just read five books of the After the War, I might not be as critical of this story as I am. When did Alexa add the convict in Boulder? That scene is missing from the book, and I'm sure the story jumped several adventures. While there were fewer grammar and concept problems than the last of the After the War books, this production lacks some of the intensity of the original series.
Just couldn't get into it. I love the LAW books and read this hoping to get more of LAW. This book was just too much for me....trolls, vamps, magic, etc.... Not my thing and was hard to follow. Something about the way the characters spoke bothered me. It was like they were in the 1800s not the future. Looking forward to more LAW but I don't think I will read anymore of this series.
Damn,I love this writer!.angela has the capability of a God,patient and can get it done.her men follow her no matter what.the situations they get into and out of are amazing. Love the creatures and the mutations of nature this war has caused to appear.if you don't read her whole series, you are really missing out.
This is shaping up to be a cracking series. Can't wait to read more. A worthy stablemate to fellow PA/ Fantasy series I love ... The Dark Tower series by Stephen King & Terry Brooks Series esp the Genesis of Shannara series.
Just when you thought the US government couldn't get any crueler...well, power corrupts and if you have the least bit of doubt as to the government's ability to manipulate the world situation in order to realize its own ending will really like this series.
I read this book because I absolutely love Angela White's LAW series. This story has promise, but I was left wanting more. After reading, I just don't feel like a good character description was given, and the story as a whole needed more depth.
I intentionally read this one first. I'm excited for the rest. Of course it's already downloaded, and I have moments of waiting ahead of me, after LAW, I can't wait to get to more understanding of the descendants.
Yummy. I love the main character. I love her subtle ness and power. I love that her men follow her and are completely loyal to her. I got lost a it between man number two and man number five. Where did they come from? It feels like this series has a long way to go and I want to follow.
Wonderful storyline, poor execution. Between skipping chunks of the story and the grammar/editing mistakes I could not finish this. I wish it had been done better.
