In early 19th century Jamaica, Arabella Ashford and her cousins Lucinda and Sarah are well-to-do sugar planters' daughters. They've been sent to the family home in England to finish their educations and, most importantly, find suitable men to marry. Yet these young ladies are all people of color, for their mothers were mixed race while their fathers were white. Once they reach England, they are well liked for their beauty and spirit and soon catch the attention of the English gentlemen. Arabella, in particular, charms the tall blond man named Phillip Montgomery, whose eyes are as grey as the English sky. But the two of them find themselves at odds over a very unusual servant in her Aunt Lavinia's home – a young man from Morocco who seems constrained to live a life as a brightly dressed and decorative object. Phillip and Arabella are drawn together irresistibly, but there are many obstacles in their way – far more than for the usual English couple – and their determination will be sorely tested along the way.
