The devastating Civil War is finally ending. Laura Taylor, whose husband Rye is making his way home from the war, stands at her kitchen window. A vision of returning warriors fills her sight. In the distance, a lone soldier in blue. Is that Rye coming home? She has little time to wonder because a family friend, Willie, rides up with news that men are coming to burn the Taylors out. Laura and Rye planned for such an event, and she gets her entire family plus Willie ready to travel. Their journey is filled with hazards, both natural and man-made. Laura eventually finds herself the leader of a small wagon train of travelers heading west for Santa Fe. They hire a drunken former scout who claims to know the route and the Indians along the way. Laura doesn’t trust him.
This story kept me on my toes. The danger, love, family respect, concern for others, and general descrtipyions was almost like viewing a movie. Mr. Winkle spins a very good story and has characters that draw you in to what they are feeling and how they express their pain and joy. I truly enjoyed the whole book, and wished that somewhere along the line, our nation could accept one another and not be so hateful to one who disagrees with the. Learning to work together was very important for pioneers and still is today. Mr. Winkle, please keep writing great life lessons, and teaching respect.
This is not your run of the mill Western Wagon Train trip across country but very enjoyable just the same. You see how the younger members of the family grow up and learn to takes responsibility along the way and the mother handles the whole wagon by herself. You might enjoy it as long as you don't forget it is not one of your run of the mill wagon train trips across country. I enjoyed the change and you might as well.
Some men from Arkansas were coming to kill them. After much hardship, they reached Santa Fe. A man who they thought was their friend betrayed them. The author wove a very good story. Only at the surprise ending did they find their friend betrayed them.
This was a very good read. An exciting western full of suspense and mystery. I truly loved it. It was full of love for your fellow man. Honesty followed the brave of the west
It is rough on the trail West, especially at a time when bad men seem to outnumber good men. Luck, skill and determination see our family of heroes through even the twist at the end.
Civil War, men who fought on both sides returning to their families or whatever is left. Red legs, Quantrell Raiders who did most of their killing and raiding around the Kansas territory. This is a fast moving action, descriptions of the areas they passed through. Read this adventure and you'll feel the same way these settlers felt relocating unexplored regions of the United States to start over again..ALWAYS hoping for the best.
War is a horrible thing, it's the maximum in legal killing. This book is about a lot of wars the worst thing is when your friend becomes the enemy someone who you trust. C. Wayne Winkle writes an intrigue and suspense filled western.
These stories are some of the greatest. It gets your attention from the first paragraph. If you like to read about the western days and wagon trains, you will enjoy this book. I highly recommend them!!!
I certainly would not have read it if I had known what a stupid ending it has. The book really isn't too bad, except for the totally ridiculous ending. I wouldn't read another of his books.
It is always a pleasure to meet a strong woman paired with a strong man. The only irritating thing in this entire book was the use of further when farther fit.
Very good book. It kept me reading until late at night and still thinking of what would happen next. I recommend it to anyone who wants a good western.
