Unlike John’s other books such as Terror at Beslan and Shooter the Dramatic Untold Story of the Police Response to the Virginia Tech Massacre, which tell harrowing stories of horrible events through the eyes of warriors who race into harm’s way, this book is a detailed, technical and tactical analysis of the worst terror attacks the world has seen, and provides a thorough explanation of how terrorists have evolved their tactics in Mass-Hostage Sieges over the years. After each attack, including Israel, the Netherlands, Lima, Peru and the four major attacks in Russia, in addition to the assault on Mumbai, John explains the tactics that were used, what lessons the terrorists learned and how those lessons were incorporated into new tactics in the next assault. In addition to this evolution the book culminates with a predictive model of what the next Mass-Hostage Siege will likely look like, including terrorist attack team numbers, likely targets, numbers of hostages, the phases the siege will go through, negotiations tactics the terrorists will use, and ultimately how that standoff will end. Originally it formed the foundation of his dissertation to complete his doctorate in Middle East Studies at Kings College London, and so meets the highest academic standards. However, this book, at 732 pages, is more than double the size of that paper and includes all of the facts John was ever able to gather that will someday be relevant to those military, law enforcement and government agencies called in to deal with such attacks.
