"This book covers a wide variety of knitting patterns, techniques and projects; you won't get bored of it anytime soon! It even looks a bit overwhelming at first, but thanks to the detailed instructions, it turned out to actually be quite simple, and definitely very fun."
- Sarah
"I will admit that, at first, I was overwhelmed with how much detail this book packs. When it says A-Z Guide, it isn't joking. The photographs, the diagrams, the helpful links to videos and other resources, and the incredibly simple descriptions are exactly what I needed! I cannot stress this enough. I know it probably sounds silly to get super excited about a book on Knitting, but this isn't just a book on Knitting; it's THE book on Knitting."

Although I’ve been knitting from a young age I’ve had quite a lull so thought I’d refresh my mind. Plus it was available on Libby so I thought I’d take a gander through.

You know what, if this is written for beginners it better be for advanced “beginners” as it’s hard to understand plus…..it jumps to far and too fast.
It my experience I’d be lost. One minute I’m learning to caste on then I’m going by a graph to knit a flower or something in the middle of my work.

Definitely not for new knitters.

Despite the title, any bona-fide neophyte to knitting would run screaming in terror from Emma Brown’s Knitting for Beginners: The A–Z Guide to Have You Knitting in 3 Days. The book is simply too advanced for someone just learning how to cast on stitches and what knit and purl signify. For that reader, this is a one-star read.

But that doesn’t mean this book isn’t extremely useful. It’s perfect for an advanced beginner who wants to learn a variety of patterns, changing colors, what all the knitting abbreviations mean, how to repair the inevitable dropped stitches, and more. For that reader, this is a four-star read. Why not five stars? Because Brown doesn’t really explain how to make cables — which is what this advanced beginner (and a lot of others, I’m sure) really wanted to know. Because of the utility of the book, based on the reader’s knitting experience, I have declined to indicate the stars.

Been knitting for seventy years, but. . .

I never figured out how to read a chart! And that's just the first good thing here. The very clear stitch directs and patterns are really good if you are looking for something that the grandchildren you are helping can work with on their own (assuming they can read) when you aren't nearby to help. This is great for self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment. And I have to say that's a nice thing in our day. Finally, there's a very handy group of good things to know and online sites to visit.

Not for Lefties!

First the rant: I am left handed. When I buy a how to book that says it has a section especially for left handed people ; I expect that section to contain pages not a paragraph telling me to just reverse the instructions. Emma Brown obviously is not left handed, does not know anyone left handed and could care less about left handed readers. I will never buy another book by her.

I gave the book a 2 star rating because if you are right handed the instructions are clear and easy to follow.

It was a nice book, hard to understand how to do a lot of things, but I found the first part of it particularly useful and I learn a lot more than I was expecting, although not exactly to knit that was the actual point of reading it. I did learns a lot of useful tips and a lot around knitting in general, but I think that knitting is going to be something that I’ll have to learn in other way than just reading a book about it.

I thought the book was good.

I really wish there were more instructions for increases and decreases and more of an explanation on how to read your knitting. However I found the hyperlinks to specific videos very helpful. Overall it is a good start out book to learn knitting for an absolute beginner.

Good basic guide for beginning knitters

Even includes left handed knitters and knitting with double pointed and circular needles. It also has several patterns to try.
