About the author

Jean-Paul Charles Aymard Sartre was a French philosopher, playwright, novelist, screenwriter, political activist, biographer, and literary critic, considered a leading figure in 20th-century French philosophy and Marxism. Sartre was one of the key figures in the philosophy of existentialism (and phenomenology). His work has influenced sociology, critical theory, post-colonial theory, and literary studies. He was awarded the 1964 Nobel Prize in Literature despite attempting to refuse it, saying that he always declined official honors and that "a writer should not allow himself to be turned into an institution."
Sartre held an open relationship with prominent feminist and fellow existentialist philosopher Simone de Beauvoir. Together, Sartre and de Beauvoir challenged the cultural and social assumptions and expectations of their upbringings, which they considered bourgeois, in both lifestyles and thought. The conflict between oppressive, spiritually destructive conformity (mauvaise foi, literally, 'bad faith') and an "authentic" way of "being" became the dominant theme of Sartre's early work, a theme embodied in his principal philosophical work Being and Nothingness (L'Être et le Néant, 1943). Sartre's introduction to his philosophy is his work Existentialism Is a Humanism (L'existentialisme est un humanisme, 1946), originally presented as a lecture.

The focus of this review is on the book's title piece - The Wall. This existentialist story has the feel of a film shot in stark black and white; the prose is as hard boiled as it gets and is told in first-person. The opening scene takes place in a large bare room with white walls where the narrator, Pablo Ibbieta, a man we can visualize with a thin, chiseled face, slick back hair and looking a bit like Albert Camus or Humphrey Bogart - a visualization in keeping with the tone of one of those 1940s black and white films - is interrogated, and, along with two other men, sentenced to be shot dead. The three condemned are taken to a cellar with bench and mats, a room shivering cold and without a trace of warmth or humanity. The story unfolds in this hard, dank, ugly cellar room. Absurdity and despair, anyone?

Sartre has us live through the evening and night with Pablo and the two other convicted men: Tom, who has a thick neck and is fat around the middle (Pablo imagines bullets or bayonets cutting into his flesh), and Juan, who is young and has done nothing, other than being the brother of someone wanted by the authorities. We watch as Pablo and Tom and Juan turn old and gray; we smell urine when Tom unconsciously wets his pants; we hear Tom speaking of men executed by being run over by trucks to save ammunition.

A doctor enters the room and offers cigarettes and asks if anyone wants a priest. No one answers. Pablo falls asleep and wakes, having no thought of death or fear - what he is confronting is nameless; his reaction is physical - his cheeks burn and his head aches. Meanwhile, the doctor, referred to as the Belgian by Pablo, takes Juan's pulse and writes in his notebook. All is clinical; all is calculating. The cold penetrates - the doctor looks blue. Pablo sees that he himself is drenched in sweat. Sartre has written philosophical works such as Being and Nothingness where he addresses the meaninglessness of life and the reality of death in conceptual terms but in this story his ideas are given flesh and blood.

The core of the tale is all three men dealing with their own death. Juan sobs. Tom talks so he can recognize himself, that is, talk as a way of anchoring his sense of self in the world. He says something is going to happen he doesn't understand: death is a blank for Tom. And also for Pablo, who observes how the doctor entered the cellar to watch bodies, bodies dying in agony while still alive.

Pablo remembers living as if immortal and reflects he spent his life counterfeiting eternity, although he missed nothing, he understood nothing. Meanwhile, Tom touches the wooden bench as if touching death. Now that Pablo is looking at things through the lens of death, objects appear less dense - several hours or several years are all the same when you have lost the illusion of being eternal. Pablo feels a horrible calm, a distance from his body; his feeling of being with his body is as if he is tied to an enormous vermin. Feeling your body as an enormous vermin - how disgusting and alienating. Just in case if you are wondering if this is existentialism, this is existentialism.

The Doctor lets everyone know it is 3:30. At the mention of the time, Juan loses it and become hysterical but Pablo simply wants to die cleanly. After some agonizing minutes, the guards come in and take away Tom and Juan. Pablo hears shots fired out in the yard and wants to scream, but simply grits his teeth and pushes his hands in his pockets to stay clean. What does it mean to die cleanly? We are not given anything more specific.

Pablo is taken to the first floor where he is given a chance to live by revealing the whereabouts of one Ramon Gris. What happens from this point offers a twist, a twist, that is, for a tale soaking in absurdity, dread, alienation and death. Please read The Wall. You will be chilled; you will have an existentialist experience, you just might laugh so hard at the end you will start to cry.

The first (undoubtedly the best) gives its title to the collection. "The Wall" is an impeccable and gripping text of around thirty pages, which accounts for human reactions to an extreme existence situation.
The plot is set in the Spanish Civil War of 1936, between Republicans and Nationalists. Francoist troops took three Republicans prisoner. After a botched interrogation, they were locked in a hospital's cellar. A commander comes to tell them the sentence: they will be shot the next day at dawn. A Belgian doctor is introduced to the prisoners to note their reactions to the idea of ​​death.
From there, while imbuing his text with a ghastly atmosphere, Sartre extracts the pure ore of anguish. The condemned cannot escape their situation; they perceive their death as almost material. They are confined and stuck in a fixed attitude, which no longer relates to existence but the essence because the end, very close, will justify them.
Sartre brilliantly exploits this extraordinary metaphor of the wall. The symbol then accesses a great philosophical power. In the proper sense, he adjusted the wall section against which the condemned had placed and brought down. The barrier prevents the cannons of pointed rifles from escaping. But figuratively, the wall is infinite, impenetrable; it prevents us from fleeing our existence and the present situation we have to face.
Death is just one of many cases. It is impossible to flee its existence, freedom, and responsibility because an opaque, invisible, omnipresent wall stops any attempt to escape. The impasse of reality will never allow us to escape. You can never run away from yourself.
It's an excellent text.

الجدار - الغرفة - إروسترات - أُلفة - طفولة قائد

- يمتلك سارتر القدرة على ضخ كمية هائلة من المشاعر الصادقة في لحظة معينة وإيصالها للقارئ، رغم ان الترجمة تفقدها البعض من زخمها.

- "طفولة قائد"،برأيي، هي الأفضل بين القصص الخمسة واقلها شهرة، لأنها تأخذ المجرى النفسي لصبي من صغره (تأنيثه من امه بالإسم واللبس) الى مابين الطفولة والمراهقة (عقدة أوديب)، الى المراهقة وتغييراتها النفسية (مخالفة القواعد، رأي الأكبر سناً في المراهق)، الى الشباب والحركات السياسية، الى النضوج وفهم الحياة، الى المعرفة الذاتية للشخص لذاته، وعدم الإكتراث الى آراء الناس بشأنه (الثقة بالنفس ومعرفتها)... هذه القصة، ورغم عدم اقتناعي يوماً بتفسيرات فرويد في علم النفس، الا انها اسطورة في الروايات النفسية، في التفاصيل الدقيقة للنفس وتطلعاتها....

When I first read this so many years ago - back in 1968 - I thought I was close to beginning my first year at university.

I was wrong. The Lord was about to enrol me at his Graduate Centre for Hard Knocks. Upon reading this, He then selected me for accelerated adulthood.

Folks were having fun in those heady years of awakening, but for me, my fun was in burrowing closer to the Heart of Darkness. Why? I had forever been asleep at the switch. I was playing catch-up.

This book was an apt beginning to my awakening, along with Joyce's Ulysses, which I had just finished with the help of a Skeleton Key.

In that book, James Joyce inferred that adulthood is really Nightworld. At least it was becoming that to myself and poor old James.

The other kids did what came naturally, but being unnaturally shy I didn't.

My Sun wasn't shining, so I couldn't make Hay.

A stunted mess.

So Sartre made it worse. Ever the showman, he wanted to dramatically foist on North Americans the same kinda anguished pain he had felt - while they kept positive - during the German Occupation.

So he gave it to us with both barrels: "death isn't fun. It is long-drawn agony."

While he was never averse to making as much hay on the side as he pleased, he saw himself as a saint manqué, and like his idol Jean Genet, a Martyr to Brute Reality. So he pads the envelope. Overplays it.

Yes, he overplayed his hand with this story. But he was bluffing, playing the macho wiz kid. He too loved his fun, no matter how ugly he made it look. His existentialism was not saltpetre.

God save the guy! The first of the wokes - and the first to fall on his sword.

Or was he only, in his pride, seated under the overhanging Sword of Damocles?

The Gleaming Sharp Sword of the Void...

I only wish the Lord had saved Sartre as well from the nattering devils that drove him into that emptiness - just as He has saved me from mine:

In the ordinary, nondescript and smiling joys of my simple senior's life.

You gotta love Sartre's sexy objectification of women. I totally think Sartre was an ass man. Exempli gratia:

"Her tail is small, yes, a lot smaller than mine, but you can see more of it. It's all around, under her thin back, it fills the skirt, you'd think it was poured in, and besides it jiggles."

Hell is other people... other people who can't appreciate a nice jiggling booty!

If Sartre was alive today, I'm sure he'd give that comment a high five or whatever the French existensialist equivalent of that is (maybe a quiet snooty glare?)

In fact, how can you appreciate someone who is perhaps the biggest influence on rap music in this century, still 20 years after his death? Allow me to demonstrate:

The first example I have occured in 2005, with a song stemming from a famous Sartre quote from Nausea (and the idea that he was an ass man):

Sartre: "I exist. It's sweet, so sweet, so slow."

Juvenile:

"Uh I like it like that \
she working that back \
I don't know how to act \
Slow motion for me\
slow motion for me\
slow motion for me\
Move it slow motion for me."

Sweet slow motion indeed. That's why I exist!

To further belabor the point, we have the well known example from Lil Jon and the Eastide Boys's hit with the following lyrics:

"Let me see you get low\
you scared you scared \
Drop dat ass to the floor \
you scared you scared \
Let me see you get low \
you scared you scared \
Albert Camus and Jean Paul Sartre differed in view of \
the abserd the abserd"

Unfortunently, the rap community felt that this rift between Camus and Sartre would result in yet another (possibly violent) dichotomizing of the rap world. To avoid this, the final lyics were changed, altering the course of the song tremendously, also resulting in the removal of 20 other verses leaving only the tale of a shorty getting krunk thus avoiding any deep philosophical discussion.

كلما قرأت لسارتر مؤلف ما كهذه القصص المختارة مثلاً، يجعلني الأمر أتساءل هل أزال سارتر الجدار بيننا و بين أفكاره حقًا بهذه المحاولات، أم أقام جدارًا آخر أكثر صلابة و ممتلئ بشقوق معقدة؟
أعلم ان حشريتي للإطلاع على أفكاره شيء لا يتوقف وخاصة بطريقة تعامله مع شخوصه و كيف يعذبهم و يعدهم بالأمل، لعلّ سارتر هذا غثيان فلسفة عصره بالفعل لأنّه يرى البشر غثيان الوجود.

ذكروني مجددًا .. لماذا هنالك من لم يقرأ لسارتر لحد اليوم؟

The Wall is a brilliant collection of stories that capture the essence of existentialism with incredible emotional depth. Sartre’s writing is sharp, intense, and thought provoking, forcing readers to confront the absurdity of life and the meaning of freedom. Each story feels raw and alive, filled with moral tension and philosophical insight.

Sartre has applied his existential depth to perhaps the most basic of themes here, but it works. This collection of 5 short stories written in late 1940's are a worthy read for any Sartre fan. The first story 'The Wall' is set during the Spanish Civil War with Pablo, one of the prisoners, being the protagonist. The story is one about the absurdity of life and how Pablo coincidentally and accidentally causes one of his comrades to be caught even though Pablo was not aware of it at all. The second story 'The Room' is much more spookier and the stereotypical bourgeois values are criticised with a woman who chooses to share the absurd world of her psychopathic husband. 'Erostratus' again sees the protagonist reject the accepted values of society and decides to go against society by randomly shooting people on the street. There is an autobiographical element in this book too as the main character is very much portrayed as Sartre. The stories are demanding in terms of engaging the reader emotionally and thoughtfully, and are extremely rewarding if you are willing to open to your mind to Sartre's way of thinking of people, and of the world. Should have read in French though, as the translation on my copy wasn't the greatest. I also can't help thinking he was a better writer of non-fiction and essays than he was of fiction.

This anthology from Jean Paul Sartre is hard to pin down. I found the stories all intriguing in various ways, yet somehow they mostly missed the mark for me. Hence the modest 3 star rating.

My favorite story in the collection of 5 tales, is a toss up between Herostratus and The Wall . The former recounts the downward spiral of a man who has become misanthropic and finds refuge in the lascivious fringes of society. It reminded me somewhat of Sartre's novel Nausea, which is an ode to his philosophy of existentialism (indeed there is a strong existentialist thread in all the stories in this anthology). The latter story, The Wall, tells the gripping tale of a man, who is imprisoned and awaiting execution for being a rebel during the Spanish Civil War. Sartre does an exquisite job of taking readers into the man's mind during his waning hours of life.

My least favorite story was The Childhood of a Leader. The story unfortunately meanders through a sort of "Freudian" coming of age of a French boy, the son of a wealthy industrialist, as he grows up to fulfil his destiny as a future leader, with vehemently fascist beliefs (and commensurate violent actions). The fascism (in particular antisemitism) and sexual promiscuity recounted in the story is quite jarring, but perhaps was acceptable/understandable at the time when the story was published in the late 1930s (ironically just before the outbreak of WWII). This story in particular may contain potential triggers for some readers, who may want to consider skipping it.

Overall this anthology is worth reading if you are interested in exploring the full breadth and depth of Sartre's literary body of work. Readers should bear in mind that these stories are ill-suited for a light Sunday afternoon read!

Oh you know those whacky existentialists . . . just a typical beach read, really. Early chick-lit. Love the stories, they are colorful and fairly realistic in the way they depict the ridiculous, repetitive or futile behaviors people exhibit (other peeps, not me, of course). I'm guessing that Sartre must have been hella good times at cocktail parties. Wonder who would have won in a death match between Jean-Paul, Al Camus and lil' Freddie Nietzsche? (I'm betting Nietzsche, he was uber-efficient.)

يحوي الكتاب خمسة قصص هي الجدار (وهي القصة الأكثر شهرة ) , الغرفة ,
أروسترات , حبل الوريد و تسمى أيضا بالحميمية وأخيرا طفولة قائد

كانت أولى الملاحظات التي قفزت إلى ذهني بعد أن قرأت القصص الثلاث الأولى هي الحالات الغريبة التي وضع فيها سارتر شخصياته والقلق الذي يعتريها

أعني أنه كان يضع مأزقا لبطل القصة أحيانا يكون عنيفا أو محرجا أو مرعبا
لينسف كل القوالب الجامدة ويخرج بها عن القالب النمطي
ولعل تعبير سارتر نفسه عن هذه القصص بإنها خمسة إنحرافات صغيرة ومأساوية لهو الأبلغ عما قرأته على هذا الجدار !

تدور القصة الأولى حول ثلاثة من السجناء تعرضوا للسجن بسبب أفكارهم الثورية وذلك في زمن الحرب الأهلية الأسبانية ويصور جان بول سارتر الحالة التي عليها المحكوم بالإعدام وتداعيات الخوف الذي ستتعرض له المجموعة والذي يؤدي بصاحبه لمعاناة شديدة وفقدان الأمل وإحباط وربما أيضا الجنون
هل ممكن أن تتخيل مشاعر هؤلاء المحكومين بالإعدام وكيف تحاصرهم مشاعر رهيبة كيف يسقط في إيديهم وتسرق منهم الحياة في لحظة بكل برود وقسوة !
كان سارتر عظيما في تصوير هذه الحالة حتى إنني أشفقت على ذلك الشاب الصغير وخشيت أن يموت قبل أن يساق إلى الجدار
تصطف المجموعة على الجدار المعدّ للإعدام إلا أن القصة تنحى منحنى آخر وذلك بحدث مفاجىء قد يسبب للقارىء البرىء صدمة

القصة الثانية هي الغرفة وفيها يقدم سارتر حكاية إمرأة تزوجت من رجل مصاب بالجنون
ولا أخفيكم كم أعجبتني هذه القصة أعتقد أن فكرة هذه القصة بارعة جدا لأن سارتر قدم فيها نموذجا لحالة من الإضطرابات النفسية التي قد تعصف بوجود إنسان فيصبح وكأنه عدم كما صورّ فيها نظرة المجتمع إلى هذا المريض من خلال العائلة التي حاولت أن تفصل بين الزوجة وزوجها رافضة أن تستمر ابنتهم مع شخص مريض
كانت هناك مشاهد جميلة منها الخيالات التي كانت تحاصر المريض خوفه وأحلام التماثيل ورفض المرأة التخلي عن زوجها والطريقة التي كانت تفكر بها وهي تواجه ضعف قوى زوجها العقلية ضعفاً تدريجيا

القصة الثالثة فقد شخص كان محتقرا من أقرانه لضآلة حجمه وشعور بالعجز عن المواجهة وعن إقامة علاقات وخاصة مع الأنثى لكنه يحصل على مسدس ويحدث هنا الفارق حين تتغير مشاعره ويصبح أكثر ثقة بنفسه يتضخم وينفجر حين يبدأ في التفكير بالقتل وهذه القصة مثال عن كيف ممكن أن تتغير طبيعة الإنسان إلى النقيض وأن اللجوء إلى العنف قد لا تكون إلا وسيلة يتبعها العاجز
هذه القصة ذكرتني بفيلم شاهدته عن حادثة اغتيال ( جون لينون ) والقاتل الذي كان متأثرا برواية الحارس في حقل الشوفان وكيف أبدع مخرج الفيلم في رسم نفسية القاتل قبل إرتكابه الجريمة وإنفعالاته الغير مبررة وكانت المشاهد التي كتبها سارتر عن التداعيات في ذهن بطله والرغبة التي ظهرت على السطح لإرتكاب جريمة القتل مشابهة تماما للجنون الذي كان يعتري بطل الفيلم
وهكذا تأتي شخصيات سارتر لا تخلو من عنف لاتخلو من جنون لا تخلو من إثارة
بعيدة تماما عن النمطية لا تتوقع تصرفاتها تجعلك تشعر بالنظرة السوداوية التي يحملها سارتر تجاه العالم
إنه كما قال عنه أندريه مولرو فعلا
خبير المشاعر الإنسانية الصاخبة

ثيمة الخوف بصفة عامة الخوف من الغد .. الخوف من القادم هو المحتوى العام لهذه المجموعة القصصية التي تتك��ن من خمس قصص وفق النسخ العربية لجون سارتر ولا أدري إن كان قد تم إنتقائها من أعمال مختلفة. أقوى هذه القصص وأكثرها بقاءًا في نفسك قصة الجدار وأنت تعيش الخوف من إنتظار الموت مع ثلاثة أشخاص قادمين من خلفيات سياسية محكوم عليهم بالإعدام في اليوم الذي يليه، تنصب هذه القصة على مكنونات النفس وأظن سارتر قدير علي تأدية هذه المهمة وإشعارك بأن أنت / أنتِ من سيعدم في الغد.. هذا هو سارتر "خبير المشاعير الساخبة" كما سماه أندريه موروا... يمثل الجدار في (مجموعة الجدار) السجن . لم يطلق سارتر مصطلح الجدار على القصة الذي لم يرد فيها غير مرتين أو ثلاث مرات – لا أذكر حقيقة – من فراغ بل عمد إلى أن يجعل القارئ يعي فقد السجناد الثلاثة للجدار الذي يتكأ على الآمان في البيت لجدار يتحول لسجن قبل الإعدام. إذا لم تأول النص مع سارتر فأنت تفقد روح ومتعة النص... عندما يتوغل سارتر في ذهنية هولاء السجناد ينقل دواخل كل شخص منفردًا بيئته وأفكاره ومخاوفه ونظرته المختلفة عن الآخر تكويناته لذا تعايش الثلاثة منفردين لهذا الجدار من أعظم ما كتب سارتر.

عندما تقرأ لسارتر تحتاج تركيز عالٍ جدًا لأنك سوف تفقد هذا التركيز مبكرًا. هذا الرجل وضع كل خلاصة تجربته الحياتية والقراءات في علم نفس التطور البشري وتأثره بنظريان علماز النفس بين صفحات رواياته وقصصه الطويلة التي قد يعتبرها رواية مقارنة بعدد صفحاتها. لذا يتركك فارغًا من كل شيء ومشحونًا بكل شيء. أجمل مافي سارتر هو عدم بعده عن التجربة الروائية والقصصية الألمانية الغارقة في الوصف البشري وتحليل النفس. عندما تقرأ لسارتر تحمد الله أنه يتناول تفاصيل وتطورات النس البشرية وسلوكها ولو تناول تفاصيل بقية الأحداث المتعلقة بالزمان والمكان كأجزاء من بنية الرواية لأصبحت القصة القصيرة لدية مترهلة ومصابة بمرض الحشو. لكنه لا يفعل ذلك هو يعي قيمة الإنسان لذا يهتم به وإن كان الإنسان لديه ينظر له من زاوية الوجودية.

الغرفة :
قصة سيدة متزوجة من رجل مصاب بالجنون وتعتريه الكثير من حالات الخوف والهواجس طوال هذا المرض. الأٍقوي من تسجيل حالات واضطرابات الزوج هو التصوير الدقيق لنفسية الزوجة رغم سير القصة في تراجيديا رتيبة ومكررة متمثل في وقوف المرأة بجانب زوجها ومحاولات القربين في ثنيها عنه لكن شد انتباهي توغل سارتر في مزاجية الزوجة ونظرتها للجنون المتمثل في الزوج.

الجدار : توجد في النسخ العربية بعدة ترجمات وهي هنا من ترجمة د. سهيل إدريس ووفق في ترجمته عندما قرأت الترجمة هنا مقارنة بترجمة (دار الحياة – بيروت). وهذه القصة الرائعة لسارتر هى مستلة من كتاب آخر حمل عنوانها وهنا اضيفت لقصص هذه المجموعة.

ايروسترات : قصة مسدس الشاب الذي كان مكان إزدراء وكيف يساهم المجتمع بتحقيره لبعض النماذج في خلق التناقض وإخراج المارد النائم وايقاضه.

Each of the pieces in this collection of short fiction has much to recommend it, but the final novella "Childhood of a Leader" stands out as one of finest novellas I've ever read. Even though the title story "The Wall" is considerably more famous, "Childhood of a Leader" is more ambitious and more groundbreaking. Written in the 1930s, this piece explores gender, class, sexuality, homo-eroticism, antisemitism, social-constructedness, and several key philosophical issues -- though it does all this in a prose that at once lyric and breezy. You can turn any page at random and find at least one passage that is beautiful merely on the level of sentence structure, imagery, or turn of phrase. I haven't been this impressed with a piece of short fiction in quite a while.

[Side note: I read this collection several years ago when I was in undergrad, and I am now re-reading it for my PhD exams. I fell in love with the entire book back then, and I am enamored with it now, but interestingly, there are only a small handful of overlaps between my previous love and my current one. Of course, we change as we age, and that obviously explains this, but my point is that there was something for me in this book when I was in early twenties and even more now in my early thirties. Not many books age so well.]

Un lucru e clar: Sartre isi construieste impecabil povestirile. Cuvintele te poarta pe nesimtite de la un cadru la altul si te scufunzi in poveste ca intr-o mare (mai limpede sau mai tulbure, dupa voia autorului). Si uneori mai ca nu-ti vine sa mai iesi de acolo :)

Η πρώτη μου επαφή με τον κόσμο του Σαρτρ μου άφησε πολύ καλές εντυπώσεις. Μου άρεσε πολύ ο ιδιαίτερος τρόπος του να εμβαθύνει στην ψυχοσύνθεση των ηρώων και φυσικά το περιβόητο, και χαρακτηριστικό του, Παράλογο.
Από το πρώτο διήγημα μου έμεινε ο ηρωισμός του κρατούμενου, η πολύ όμορφη περιγραφή της στάσης και της ψυχολογίας του μελλοθάνατου, αλλά κυρίως αυτή η τραγική επίδραση του Τυχαίου.
Στο δεύτερο μου κίνησε πολύ το ενδιαφέρον ο κόσμος του ψυχικά διαταραγμένου ανθρώπου.
Στο τρίτο με εντυπωσίασε το πόσο αδικαιολόγητο μίσος και πόσα συμπλέγματα μπορεί να κρύβει μέσα του ένας δολοφόνος εν πλήρει συνειδήσει.
Το τέταρτο δεν το βρήκα ιδιαίτερα ενδιαφέρον, ίσως να ήταν μια σκιαγράφηση ενός ανέμελου γυναικείου τρόπου σκέψης της εποχής.
Στο τελευταίο, ο συγγραφέας κάνει μια αναδρομή στα παιδικά και νεανικά χρόνια ενός φασίστα. Ενός παιδιού που μεγάλωσε σε μια ευκατάστατη οικογένεια. Ένας νέος που, όπως όλοι, αναζητά τη σεξουαλικότητά του, καθώς και το νόημα της ύπαρξης και περνά από διάφορα στάδια, ώσπου καταλήγει να νιώσει ολοκληρωμένος, γινόμενος μέλος μιας παρέας ρατσιστών, μιας συμμορίας, η οποία δέρνει και προπηλακίζει αλλοεθνείς σε κάθε ευκαιρία. Είναι η περίοδος της ανόδου του Χίτλερ. Το διήγημα αυτό, για τα τότε δεδομένα, αποτέλεσε, φαντάζομαι, μια "γροθιά στο στομάχι" γιατί παρουσίασε το φασισμό εν τη γενέσει, υπό ένα πρωτότυπο και ψυχογραφικό πρίσμα. Για 'μένα, "τα Παιδικά χρόνια ενός αρχηγού" ήταν τροφή για σκέψη.

ذكروني مجدداً.. لماذا هناك من لم يقرأ لسارتر لحد اليوم ؟ 
سؤال الجميلة فاطمة كان محفزاً لي للتعرف على سارتر وتوصية مبتكرة لم استطع مقاومتها، المجموعة التي قرأتها تحت عنوان الغرفة وقصص أخرى ترجمة الدكتور سهيل أدريس، القصص هي : الغرفة، الجدار، ايروسترات، صميمية. راقت لي شخصيات سارتر وتفاصيلها الغريبة، الغرابة تأتي من تعمّق سارتر في أدق تفاصيلها الموحشة حتى للشخصية ذاتها، في قصة الجدار يظهر الانفصال جلياً بين الروح والجسد بردّات فعل متناقضة ويشوبها الوهم، جوان الصغير كان يسأل الطبيب عن عذابات الجسد لحظة الإعدام، بينما بابلو الناضج كان يتساءل : لم أكن أريد هذا، لم أريد أن أموت كحيوان، كنت أريد أن أفهم ! 

المجموعة كانت بداية جميلة لي مع سارتر، وأحيل بدوري سؤال فاطمة لبقية أصدقاء القراءة : لماذا هناك من لم يقرأ لسارتر لحد اليوم ؟

الجدار وقصص أخرى

هي قصة وليست رواية كما يقول البعض، ليس بعض القرّاء بل أيضا مواقع ومقالات ودور نشر.

احتوى هذا الكتاب على عدد من القصص: الجدار، الغرفة، اروسترات، ألفة وبطولة قائد

أغلب القصص تلقي بك بغتة في موقف محتدم أو غامض. في الجدار ينسدل الستار عن ثلاثة معتقلين يتلقون حكماً بالإعدام، وفي الغرفة نجد أنفسنا أمام شخص قرر ارتكاب جريمة لدوافع لا يسهل فهمها. ونهايات القصص ليست أكثر لطفاً من البدايات بصفة عامة.

تزخر القصص بالشخصيات الغريبة والمعذبة نفسياً. فهو إما شخص يوشك على فراق الحياة، أو امرأة تائه ما بين الحب والجنس، أو مراهق يبحث عن إثبات نفسه واتخاذ منهج له محدد له في الحياة.

المشاهد ولا شك صادمة، جريئة، ليست شاعرية ولا تهدف إلى مساعدة القارئ على الاسترخاء. بل على العكس، هي تمسك بخطامه وتهزه بجلافة حتى يفكر فيما يعرض النص أمامه. ثمة أسئلة وجودية، وإجابات عبثية، وقرارات عدمية ومعاناة إنسانية.

Per apprezzare questa raccolta al meglio, e per comprenderne fino in fondo la genialità, credo che si debba essere preparati sull’esistenzialismo molto più di quanto lo sia io, di conseguenza mi sono limitata a considerare questi racconti come un mero prodotto letterario, pur avendo colto (a tratti) la grandiosità dell’allegoria filosofica che ci sta dietro.
Queste è la classifica dei racconti ivi contenuti in ordine di mio gradimento personale, ma come si evince dal voto complessivo, il livello è magistrale:

- la camera
- intimità
- infanzia di un capo
- erostrato
- il muro

Excuse my Frensh since I'm not that good at it.

Aujourd'hui, Je vais parler du livre: Le mur écrit par le fameux philosophe Jean Paul-Sartre. Que j'ai lu en Français. Yaaay. Est qu'on peut dire yaay en français?

Le mur est une collection de 5 nouvelles:

●Erostrate:☆☆
●Intimité:☆☆,5
●L'enfance d'un chef:☆☆

Chaque nouvelle était intéressante, alors pourquoi les 2,5 étoiles? Les personnages sont tous horribles. De manière qu'on ne peut pas vraiment aimer cette histoire.
Parfois j'ai senti que quelques nouvelles n'ont aucun sens. C'est peut être parce que je suis pas forte en philosophie. Malgré tout, la langue est impéccable.

Est ce que je recommande ce livre?
Pour les gens de -17 ans: NON!
Pour les autres: meh je sais pas.

Je regrette la décision d'écrire cette critique en français. ¡Adios!

Zid je jedna pripovetka u ovoj zbirci od četiri. Sartr je često koristio fikciju za plasiranje svoje filozofije, a ovde je prosto neverovatno koliko može stvari da stane na 16 strana. Tu je malo istorije: tri borca Republike, koje falangisti hapse i zatvaraju za vreme Španskog građanskog rata. Pa solidan dijalog. Dobra priča . I filozofija o smrti, ispričana iz tri različita ugla (njih trojica su u ćeliji, poslednju noć pre nego što će ih postaviti uza zid). Uz to, što se za Sartra ne može uvek reći, lepo se razume i brzo čita. Za mene, petica.

Dobra je priča i Herostrat, Intimnost i Soba se ne bih usudio da preporučim.

Ο Σαρτρ είναι ο βασικός και κύριος εκπρόσωπος του υπαρξισμού και το αποδεικνύει μέσα από αυτή την δυνατή συλλογή διηγημάτων. Ο συγγραφέας μας θυμίζει και στα 5 διηγήματά του πως η ζωή είναι ένα παιχνίδι του οποίου τους κανόνες εμείς οι ίδιοι φτιάχνουμε… Είμαστε υπεύθυνοι για όλες τις πράξεις μας και φυσικά πρέπει να είμαστε έτοιμοι να δεχθούμε όλες τις συνέπειες… Βιώνοντας την ελευθερία μας επιλέγουμε τη μορφή και τα χαρακτηριστικά της συμπεριφοράς μας ή αλλιώς είμαστε καταδικασμένοι να είμαστε ελεύθεροι..

Έτσι λοιπόν και οι βασικοί χαρακτήρες των 5 διηγημάτων κινούνται πάνω στις παραπάνω συντεταγμένες, αλλά και πάντα κοντά σε ένα τοίχο ο οποίος σε όλες τις ιστορίες μας θυμίζει πως η προσωπική μας ελευθερία είναι συνάρτηση της ελευθερίας των υπόλοιπών…

Ο τοίχος: Μια ομάδα μελλοθάνατων φυλακισμένων την περίοδο του Ισπανικού εμφυλίου θα βιώσει την προσμονή του θανάτου, την παραμονή της εκτέλεσης τους. Τι σκέφτεται άραγε ένας άνθρωπος πριν πεθάνει; Πότε χάνει την ελπίδα του; 5/5

Το δωμάτιο: Μια γυναίκα δεν θέλει να παραδεχτεί ότι ο σύζυγος της, ο οποίος πάσχει από μια ψυχική νόσο, πρέπει να νοσηλευτεί και να ουσιαστικά να μην ζει πια μαζί της… Πρέπει να είμαστε ρεαλιστές; Πόσο απέχει η συμπόνια από την αγάπη; 4/5

Ηρόστρατος: Για μένα το πιο απολαυστικό διήγημα… Θυμίζει κάτι από ταινία του Μπουνιουέλ και ο χαρακτήρας μοιάζει ελαφρώς με τον «Ταξιτζή» του Σκορσέζε! Πότε η ατομική ελευθερία καταντάει ασυδοσία;; 5/5

Οικειότητα: Μάλλον ένα φεμινιστικό διήγημα… Μια γυναίκα (ή μήπως 2) προσπαθεί να σπάσει τα δεσμά του γάμου της και να χωρίσει, μιας και πιστεύει πως δεν την συνδέει πια κάτι με τον σύζυγό της. Πόσο όμως εύκολα είναι αυτό;; 3/5

Η παιδική ηλικία ενός αρχηγού: Το τελευταίο και εκτενέστερο διήγημα του βιβλίου. Το πέρασμα από την παιδική ηλικία στην ενηλικίωση ενός μελλοντικού «αρχηγού»… Οι πρώτες «πονηρές» σκέψεις και η λανθάνουσα ομοφυλοφιλία, το οιδιπόδειο σύμπλεγμα και εν τέλει η ματαιότητα της ζωής θεωρώ πως κάνουν το συγκεκριμένο διήγημα το πιο «αιχμηρό» σχόλιο του Σαρτρ. 4/5

Σε σύνολο θα βάλω 3,5/5* γιατί παρόλο που ο Σαρτρ θέλει να πιστέψει στην απόλυτη ελευθερία δεν μπορεί να αποφύγει μια μικρή μοιρολατρία, σε αντίθεση με τον Καμί ο οποίος όχι απλά πίστευε στην ανθρώπινη ελευθερία και είχε απαλλαχτεί από τον παράγοντα «μοίρα» αλλά είχε δώσει και τον ορισμό του παραλόγου που ουσιαστικά μας κάνει ανθρώπους…Γνωρίζοντας το παράλογο συνειδητοποιεί ότι η υψηλή αλήθεια της ύπαρξης που θέτει τις βάσεις για την αλήθεια δεν υπάρχει .

Such a philosopher of existentialism, I was thrown into an existential crisis after screwing the short story "The wall" from the namesake book. what I got from it is that We are not allowed to be clean, whether dead or alive.
