I was expecting a little more from this book. Either a sort of guide to beginners or some tips for those who choose to use a smartphone camera. I'm disappointed. It's a book that focus mainly in traditional film cameras, I found it rather useless. I think when I got the book I was counting on a little more information on smartphone techniques. Also not only the majority of the photographs didn't impact me but it's very difficult to see them. If we are reading in a e-reader (Kindle), they are almost indiscernible. It's a little better in an iPhone but not much. One more thing: I like to research cameras and photographers mentioned in books like these. It was fine with the photographers but I was not so lucky with the cameras. Models are outdated. Too outdated (in my modest opinion), even with the suggestion to second hand options.

This isn't a manifesto at all, but a beginner's guide to street photography. As such it's all right, well-presented with generally sound, if hardly revelatory advice, such as "Don't wear clothes that make you stand out from the crowd", or "Using a camera with a quiet shutter ... can make a significant difference....". The camera recommendations are not that helpful, e.g., Nikon SLRs are prominent, and the under the heading "The Bare Essentials" is a picture of a rangefinder -- fair enough, but it's a Leica M6! The vast variety of cheaper, but still high-quality rangefinders is barely hinted at.

The author is American, and the year of publication is 2012, so much of what is written here about film is out of date (like much available film). Film has become a lot harder to find and proportionally dearer.

The author's own street shots are used to illustrate the book. While nearly all have some visual interest, none are outstanding, IMHO, and many are poorly composed. Better photos from several more renowned photographers appear in the final pages of the book.

A section is devoted to the editing of digital images, which to my mind goes against the spirit of street photography.

For all its faults, though, it's still an enjoyable read.
