Never fall for your best friend…

Pushing thirty, with his reenlistment looming, decorated navy sniper Maddox Horvat is taking a long look at what he really wants in life. And what he wants is Ben Tovey. It isn’t smart, falling for his best friend and fellow SEAL, but ten years with Ben has forged a bond so intimate Maddox can’t ignore it. He needs Ben by his side forever—heart and soul.

Ben admits he likes what he’s seen—his friend’s full lower lip and the perfect muscles of his ass have proved distracting more than once. But Ben's still reeling from a relationship gone to hell, and he's not about to screw up his friendship with Maddox, too.

Until their next mission throws Ben and Maddox closer together than ever before, with only each other to depend on.

Now, in the lonely, desperate hours awaiting rescue, the real challenge—confronting themselves, their future and their desires—begins. Man to man, friend to friend, lover to lover.

This story begins in Borneo with Maddox and Ben on a mission to rescue the kidnapped sons of two senators.

The mission doesn’t go as planned; the men are separated from their team and trapped in enemy territory. With a dislocated shoulder and cracked ribs, Ben half carries his best friend through the jungle. Maddox is pale and disoriented, with his leg twisted at an odd angle. Both men are injured, but Ben won’t leave Maddox behind.

On Point is a feast for those who love best-friends-to-lovers and hurt/comfort tropes. Ben wants to make Maddox happy. These new feelings he has for his friend are . . . inconvenient. He tempts Maddox, but the more he pushes, the more their friendship suffers.

Ben and Maddox play a sexy, dangerous game, but the more they play, the harder they fall.

Maddox isn’t like Ben. He’s not the life of the party. He doesn’t have a supportive dad and stepmom; his own parents wrote him off when he came out.

Ben lives and breathes the military, but Maddox wants more: commitment, someone to care for, and his own little bakery where he can create sweet masterpieces.

This book isn’t without angst. Ben doesn’t trust love. He’s been burned over and over, first by his mother, later by his ex-husband. Maddox has been his one constant. When Maddox tells Ben he doesn’t want to reenlist, Ben panics.

“Love doesn’t keep people together. I wish it did, but it doesn’t. Someday you’ll move on. Someday I won’t be enough—”

“You will always be enough.”

More intense and gritty than either Off Base or At Attention, On Point can be read as a standalone.

If you love men in uniform (and who doesn’t?); scorching chemistry (Maddox, usually such a good boy, can talk dirty with the best of ‘em); fully realized, likable characters with quirks and insecurities; and endings that make you feel like all is right with the world, you Must. Read. This. Book.

He wasn’t sure who moved first, just that their mouths found each other, and it was like the first time all over again. Sweet and hot, tender and demanding, seeking and receiving. “I only want to be with you,” [Ben] whispered.

Dear Ms. Albert,

Stop writing amazing stories that keep me up all night. And quit it with the teaser chapters that make me want to read the next book yesterday.

Sincerely,

Dani

P.S. Full review to come because this book is a perfect little cupcake.

P.S.S. Maddox loves cupcakes.

Reread 2019 went up from 3 to 4 stars!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I anticipated this one the most. I enjoyed it, but there were things missing for me... And it pains me because I wanted this love story to be epic. But instead it fell flat and I was left quite disappointed.
The hospital scene about killed me for Maddox. His family was awful. He hadn't seen them in years because they didn't agree with who he was. Seeing them brought a spark of hope that was quickly put out when they expected him to change who he was and to come back home. With him being as badly injured as he was and still they acted the way they did made them evil heartless assholes in my book. I was glad when he sent them away.
Ben was a hero in my book for doing what he did in the jungle not only for himself, but for Maddox. I really liked him in the beginning. The way he was getting a bit possessive over Maddox. How concerned he was for the other man. But soon I started feeling like his possessive feelings were more selfish than they were passionate.
For Ben to want Maddox so much and for them to be roommates, he really didn't know him very well outside of the SEAL world. He was surprised by how many people knew Maddox outside of their bubble. He had his eyes blown wide open when he went to Maddox's church and saw how talented a singer Maddox was and how many people knew and loved him there. And he showed the beginning of his selfishness here when he got jealous of these people for being close to Maddox. Ugh!
When Maddox mentioned dating and Ben got all bothered by it I thought here we go. Epicness to come! But no. When the relationship actually started happening it felt anticlimactic. Ben brought up that they should try dating. Mad was hesitant and really didn't know how to trust where their relationship would go. And honestly it felt more like Ben just wanted all of Maddox's attention and didn't want him spending time with anyone else. Then when he found out Mad hadn't reenlisted he flipped out. Ben turned out to be quite the selfish asshole. He had no compassion for Maddox's feelings or his dreams. All he cared about was himself and how what Maddox wanted would effect him. He didn't give Mad time to explain his plan and only saw it as Maddox abandoning him. By then I was quite frustrated with the whole damn story and especially with Ben. I gave up on trying to like the guy.
It was hard trying to enjoy a book were you really liked one MC and only could barely tolerate the other one. I had such high hopes and I wish it this had turned out differently so badly.
I still enjoyed parts of the story and I look forward to the next one.
Happy reading dolls! xx
➦Oh, but this was so yummy. Honestly, I think my most favorite book by this author.
➦I was waiting for some military action and boy did I get it in this book. It is amazingly written and I devoured it. These two army guys have been friends forever and have been getting deployed together for a long time. One has always been in love with the other, who doesn't believe in relationships. That's sort of a very rough gist of it but it's much much more!
➦This book kind of reminded me of HIM by Bowen and Erickson, in a way that it evoked similar emotions and how much I loved it. And everyone here knows that HIM is my favoritestest MM of all times. To there, if that doesn't entice you to read this, I don't know what will. :)
When I finished At Attention I was SO excited to read Maddox and Ben's story.
I already knew Maddox was in love with his best-friend, Ben, but he thought he doesn't stand a chance. When he talked to Dylan about Ben, he revealed his feelings and how hopelessly he felt and well, I couldn't wait to see how these two will end up together.
I'm not sure why, but On Point didn't surprise me as much as I thought it will.
Annabeth Albert's writing style is still phenomenal, but I expected the characters to fight a little harder for their HEA! Maybe it was too sugary sweet for me right now. I've read this book right after a very angsty story, so maybe that's why I ended up a little bothered about the low angst in this one.
After a mission gone wrong and Ben saving his best-friend, Maddox, with all costs, he realized how much he hid his true feelings. Ben was a party boy for years and he tried to get his old friend Maddox into threesomes, but Maddox wanted way more. Recovering from their mission, they agree to give it a try, to see if their chemistry is real.
I think I was a little off with Ben changing so much, acting like a perfect boyfriend.
I understood Maddox's fears, Ben was a manwhore before him and what they had now was like a dream come true for him, but he was so afraid it won't last.
I loved them together, they were hot and playful. The author managed to point out the friends-to-lovers aspect and it ended up a great story! Of course they matched perfectly, but Maddox's decision of follow his heat has Ben scared and wanting to keep the distance again. I understood his fears too, given his past, his fear of a BIG change, but he hurt Maddox with his silence.
This story ended up to 4,5 rounded to 5 stars, mostly because of the SWEET epilogue. I adored it SO much!
And I also devoured the excerpt from the next book. We have a fourth book to look for. I can't wait to read it!!! I was just thinking I would LOVE to read a different kind of story by this author, maybe with losing the V card or about a curious straight man - attracted to another man - and it seems like we'll have exactly that with Dylan's brother (from At Attention). Can't wait!!! The excerpt made me SO curious and well extremely excited! *grabby, grabby hands!*
Annabeth Albert is one of my favorite authors, and she kills it again with another excellent book in the Out of Uniform series!
There are very few authors who get auto-buy status from me, but Annabeth Albert is one of them. She simply writes the kinds of books that I like to read, and though military men aren't my usual fare, I just can't get enough of this series.
On Point is a best-friends-to-lovers story. Now, while I like friends-to-lovers in theory sometimes there isn't enough tension for me because the intimacy is already there, even if it isn't sexual intimacy. Not so with this story. There was a lot of build-up, a lot of tension, and I loved every second of it.
The book starts off with the first few chapters being very intense. We are talking life or death here, and though I don't like romantic suspense, I liked the heightened sense of urgency and closeness that our two guys had in those moments.
One thing I also hate... flashbacks. There are a number of flashbacks in this story. Flashbacks are usually a big no-no for me, but I didn't mind them much here (notice a trend? Annabeth Albert can make me like things I usually hate!)
Lots of hurt/comfort and a fair amount of angst and back and forth, but it all came together to make a ridiculously romantic and compelling story. Plus, a perfect epilogue to cap off all the feels.
Another Annabeth Albert win!
So much meh. Though I enjoyed the tension we got in the first part of the book, I wasn't fond of only experiencing what caused the weirdness between Ben and Maddox in flashbacks, rather than the present time. When they were in the jungle and then the hospital, though, I was hopeful that they would simply not be able to stay away from one another.
But, that isn't how things went down. When Ben and Maddox finally decide to embark on a relationship it was almost clinical and very unsatisfying. I think that is one of the most unromantic relationship beginnings I've read in a while and certainly this series. It really seemed like Ben broached the subject of dating only because he couldn't stand the thought of Maddox dating someone else. I don't blame Maddox for not trusting it -- I never did, either.
And then, when Ben proceeded to be a selfish idiot regarding Maddox's life choices, I really wanted to shake him. Maddox didn't deserve that and Ben never once stopped to ask what Maddox really wanted out of life and he didn't pay much attention, either. I found it frustrating.
This story showed promise, at first, but really did not deliver, and it isn't one I would recommend.
Though this is book three in the "Out of Uniform" series by Annabeth Albert, it could be perfectly read as a standalone. In fact, "On Point" is my first book in this series and I enjoyed it so much, that I'm gonna read the first two as prequels.
There is something beautiful in the way this story starts, with Maddox and Ben taking care of each other in a mission that has gone down. The author shows us a protective Ben, a worried Maddox and the solid bound both share.
Just watching them interact is enough to know there is trust there. There is loyalty and reliance. And, of course, there are feelings.
" He couldn´t imagine a team without Maddox on it, couldn´t imagine a world where they didn´t head out together"
As we are witnessing these two men having each other's back, both are remembering the past, so the present is interspersed with great flashbacks that show the reader how they met, how they bonded and how one night changed everything between them...
Maddox and Ben has been friends for 12 years and theirs is a fantastic friends-to-lovers story. Intense, deep and sweet.
" They weren't a couple. Couldn't be a couple.
Simple truth was that he had no idea  how to be the man Maddox needed and deserved, and no amount of near-death experiences could change that" "
Maddox is adorable, he is a tough navy seal who loves to bake and has a lovely incapacity to course. But most of all, he is a guy in love who has been repressing truths and feelings for a decade now.
Ben is harder, tougher, bitter and more cynical than Maddox. He is the hookup where Maddox is the dating. He is the sexual being when his best friend is the "boyfriend". He is the practical guy who uses sex as stress relief, where Maddox is the easy, optimist prayer who doesn't sleep around. I am making it sound like Maddox is a virgin and not at all, please dont misunderstand me, but they call him the "Preacher" for a reason and that´s what I meant with "prayer"
" Just friends. As always. He is my best friend"
Both MCs are nearly 30 years old and, as grown experienced men, they have been through a couple of serious and intense relationships. They, as gay military men, have waited for the DADT policy to end, and they have faced family rejection and all kind of dangers together. So they know who they are, they know each other and they have lived their lives. They just need to figure out what to do now, how to face their friendship.
I really loved the book's structure. Because the seriousness of the present is perfectly mixed with the hotness of the past. Steamy past that is cut in critical moments leaving you drooling and wanting more. So much more.
That present/past frame becomes full mode present with the developing of one of the most sweet, challenging (for them) and natural love story I've read lately.
The UST, the jealousy and the denial in this book were delicious.
This is my first time reading Anabeth Albert and I really enjoyed the writing.  The friends to lovers thing was perfectly executed and felt natural. They have been friends for a while but not both being single at the same time, so even if the attraction was there they didn't act or react on this matter. Not at first, at least.
I loved Ben being in denial. Funny and cute as hell. And even if Maddox seems to be the one who has all figured out, he is not. He didnt want to go deeply in his feelings, so he is nearly as scared as Ben is.
My favorite things in this story:
- Very, very likable characters, with their flaws and their problems. Hot alpha males that I really loved.
- The sex scenes were terrific, perfectly dosed and ridiculously hot. I blushed a lot. Big lust in my case, and it's not always easy with me. These two are dirty.
- The mix between sweet, dirty and sad/hard moments. Even if I would say this book is not too angsty, it contains hard things to face, sad situations and serious issues that are perfectly measured with the romantic aspect.
So, I'm reading the first two installments. Both couples made a cameo here but I need more.
I specially want to know about the guy who said this:
"Aww. Our favorite odd not-a-couple is back together"
Yeah, it was Apollo and knowing he has kids it's making me nothing but eager. I love MM stories with kids.
Audio - 5+++ stars!! JF Harding is my kryptonite/irresistible audio drug/therapy
Story - 4 stars
After reading the mix reviews, I serious considered skipping this installment, but two reason had me giving it a try: JF Harding, and my newly insatiable need for angst. I'm not talking about the kind with unnecessary OTT drama with characters that turn into human waterfalls because they can't stop crying!!!
That said, I really did end up enjoying Ben and Maddox's story. These guys had trust issues and the lack of communication didn't help. Yes, it was frustrating, but I wanted angst and it's what I got. It made for a sweeter resolution. As much as I liked the ending, I would have appreciated an epilogue as well. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for a short story featuring these guys.
Ben and Maddox both are in SEAL. They were first best friend and then they became roommate. And now they have feelings toward each other. But because of two nights in last months, their friendship becomes weird. So they decide to have a deal and see whether it going well or not. Okay, both of them were so uncertain about this deal. They both think one of them leave the other one, eventually. And this was my most problem with this story! They both constantly think they are not enough for each other. Maddox scared of losing Ben so much and Ben trying to be the perfect guy for Maddox just because his ex left him! Ben's lack of trust in himself was on my nerves. But don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it! just, I wanted to read this book so much and when I read it, it didn’t satisfy me! The story is told in dual POV, 3rd person. it’s the third installment in "Out of Uniform" series but it can be read as a stand-alone. The writing was perfect and my only problem was with the characters. I had a good time with this one and I hope you like it more than me!
4 stars -Friends to lovers Romance
On Point is book 3 in the Out of Uniform series by Annabeth Albert. This story focuses on Ben and Maddox and is a strong friends to lovers romance and full of angst. The romance in this book is a little slow, as you would expect with high angst, and the POV alternates between Ben and Maddox with time flashbacks as well.
Imagine the one person who has your back both while on a mission and when at home. He is your best friend and partner on your SEAL team. Now imagine you have found yourself to be falling in love with this man, you are afraid because you don't want to lose your friendship - yet it drives you nuts to see them dating other people. You want to be the person they are with, you want to openly love them and you want them to love you. Would you tell them? Would you go for it and risk losing it all? What if one night you had the opportunity to join in a little hot threeway action...would you do it? This is the situation we find our poor MC Maddox in throughout the book .. he is confused, lonly, angry, and he finds himself baking a lot! (Stress baking, it's real)
When on a mission, Maddox and Ben become separated from the team. It takes them relying heavily on each other to make it home alive, and at times Maddox wants to tell Ben how he feels as he fears he won't get another chance. However, they do come home. It's during the recovery that things start to heat up between these two.
The chemistry between these two is off the charts and Ms. Albert can write some smokin' hot scenes with dirty talk that makes you blush! Loved it! Watching these two each overcome their unique obstacles and learn to communicate their wants and needs to each other was great. Yes, I wanted to pull my hair out at times but other times - awesome!
I do have to be honest and say, I had some trouble with this book - it didn't hold my interest at first and I think it was due to the time jumping around. However, once we got past those flashbacks the story picked up for me well enough for me to still rate it highly.
Overall, this was a great story! I am hoping the rumor is true and we will get more hot, sexy, men un uniform from Ms. Albert - if not, she made sure each guy in the series got their HEA so all is good! I am eager to see what she will bring us next!
4 stars and I definitely recommend this book and series!
3 stars for before the dating thing
I enjoy the best friends to lovers trope, and I loved Ben and Maddox in book 2 i was looking forward to read about them but i was disappointed. I did not feel the spark, no butterflies for me when they got together. But maybe its just me not the book.
description
The beginning was great i was hooked, i loved the flashbacks, Ben taking care of Maddox it was all roses, i was hoping for UST,the chemistry to blow me a way but, all of a sudden it was like i turned the page and i was reading a different book. Ben had a personality transplant, they were dating and... and... i got lost.
description
I was not able to feel chemistry at all between Ben and Maddox, it felt stiff, even the sex scenes fell flat.
Then came the fabricated Drama and i almost lost it. Don't get me wrong i love drama, even soapy drama sometimes but this felt forced. From that point i just wanted the book to end.
description
I will definitely read more from this author, but IMO, it is like she makes one of the MC more likable than the other. At the end of book 1 i loved Apollo but in book 2 i did not connect with him at all he frustrated the hell out of me. Then in book 2 i adored Ben and Maddox only to read book 3 and end up not liking Ben at all and Maddox didn't do anything for me at all.
Please book gods let Dustin's book not disappoint, i don't want to break things.
*Sigh* end of rant i call review! but maybe its not the book its me.
On Point is book three in the Out of Uniform series by Annabeth Albert. Since I read this series out of order, this is my final book in the series. I also think this might have been the most intense of all the books. As best I remember anyway. This is Ben and Maddox’s story!
Ben Tovey is nearly thirty years old. He’s been a Navy Seal for almost twelve years. He met Maddox right at the beginning and they’ve been best friends ever since, even serving on the same Seal Team. For the last two years, they’ve also been roommates. Ben’s Mom left when he was young. His husband also left him, along with all the money in their bank accounts, so Ben doesn’t have much faith in the whole, “forever love” idea. Maybe it works for some, but definitely not for him. His divorce is what brought him to Maddox’s apartment. It was just supposed to be temporary but he never left.
Maddox Horvat is the same age as Ben and joined the Seals at the same time. Maddox has always had a bit of a crush on Ben but always kept it to himself. Their friendship was too important to him. Maddox’s reasons for joining the Navy were different than Ben’s. And with his re-enlistment date fast approaching, he’s feeling the lure of some long ignored dreams.
This book pretty much starts right out fast. Maddox and Ben are on a mission when things go sideways. They only have each other to depend on for survival. And after returning home, things feel different. They are forced to finally confront their feelings. But Maddox still has his secrets and Ben has his ghosts. They both need each other in their lives but in what capacity? Can they risk everything and be more?
This one really got to me from the beginning. But, towards the end, I do have to admit that Ben was testing my patience! These two had so much history together. It was clear that they were meant to be together. But timing and circumstances always got in their way. Now was their chance, if they are ready and willing to take the leap. The epilogue was so sweet and was the perfect way to wrap up the book.
"I 've got your back. Leap with me, Maddox's gaze urged. And same as Ben had followed him on their first dive, out their first HALO jump, he made a choice to believe in that. To leap. Together."
This is definitely my favorite series by Annabeth Albert. After reading At Attention I was crazy excited for Maddox and Ben's story. On Point did not disappoint, and it can be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend reading the first two books as well.
My highlights:
-"Friends-to-lovers" trope, done incredibly well. The progression from friendship to lust, and, eventually, to love felt very real and natural.
-I loved the narrative structure here. The bouncing between past and present, the flashbacks of the time the characters spent in the jungle benefited the story so much.
-Lots and lots of UST! And when Maddox and Ben finally come together, it's fireworks!
-Lots of comfort-healing moments.
-The characters. Both MCs are complex, but very well crafted. They even surprised me a few times. I knew that Ben had trust issues, but in the second half of the book it became clear that Maddox had his own insecurities as well.
-I don't much care about action scenes in my romance, but I have to say that the first part of the book, with Ben and Maddox trapped in the jungle, was a masterpiece.
-I loved the cameo appearances of the other two couples from the previous books. I have all the love for Zack and Pike!
I'm so incredibly happy to see that this was not the last installment in the series, and that Dylan's brother (from At Attention) is getting his own story! I'm really looking forward to it!
I initially wasn't going to round up on this one but.....that. epilogue. It was pretty swoon-worthy.
Overall, I liked this one quite a bit. But there were a few things I wasn't super thrilled with.
(1) I thought they started dating for all of the wrong reasons - namely because Ben didn't want Maddox dating anyone else. BUT, deep down I did think Ben and Maddox did care for and have strong feeling for each other.
(2) I was a little annoyed with the drama around 80%. Kind of made me roll my eyes. I don't think Ben was fair in his reaction. But it didn't ruin anything for me.
I do think this one is one of, if not my favorite in the series. As a whole, I liked both MCs. This is by far my favorite Annabeth Albert series.
I don’t even have the words to express how glad I am that this worked out. I tiptoed into this house of cards like it was going to come crashing down around me at any second.
But it turned out to be my most successful Albert read! I devoured it too.
Maddox and Ben are best friends who are on the same SEAL team. I’m a fan of the friends to lovers trope and this was really good best-friends-who-don’t-want-to-lose-their-best-friend-but-damn-I’m-so-attracted-to-everything-about-you. There is also quite a bit of mission action and I enjoyed that plus all the SEAL/military speak.
Mad and Ben are on a mission that’s gone tits up for much of the first half with flashbacks of their recent past. Both are hurt pretty badly and it’s touch and go there for a minute as to whether or not Mad is going to make it. Being inside both of their head’s during this time really showed me how much they love each other and gave me a good sense of the fundamentals of both of them as characters.
Albert sprinkled in some of those details that I crave like Mad’s tendency to hum or sing when nervous and Ben’s tendency to go alpha when tensions are high. I also really enjoyed the SEAL team dynamics.
Once they both recover they have to figure out what to do about the shitstorm of awkward that’s been between them since the Canaan Experiment 2.0 that left a whole lot of WTFery in its wake.
You legit could’ve knocked me over with a feather when Ben was all, ‘let’s date! For science’.
I fumbled my kindle!!!!!! No joke!
Not to be rude or anything but my previous reads by this author’s tend to drag out the push/pull thing until like 85-90% until someone cracks and lays their card on the table, so I was ready for more of the same but this cropped up BEFORE the 50% mark!
Their communication is still pitiful and Mad’s utter and complete lack of faith in Ben and their relationship despite all evidence to the contrary was annoying, but at least they’re both honest about their attraction to the other!
The sex was fair. I did like the begging and dirty talk, but I think the connection between them and the romanceyness is what I liked more than anything else. Two big bad ass SEALS being all gaga over each other gave me a serious case of the heart eyes.
…removed him from his anger and hurt, left only this part of him that was always going to require Maddox more than oxygen.
I like both of these guys, but maybe Mad a teensy bit more. Course it didn’t hurt that he likes to cook and bakes regularly, that his life goal is to have a little bakery and he thinks up recipes when he’s bored or stressed. And anyone who signs up for and attends a cupcake seminar is my kind of people! But I really get Ben, why he is the way he is and what motivates him. In my opinion, these were the best characterizations I’ve read from this author as far as depth and dimension are concerned to date.
You can see the conflict coming from a country mile away but I think it played out realistically and stayed true to these characters and I liked that Mad didn’t immediately let bygones be bygones.
I would certainly recommend this to anyone who enjoys best friends to lovers or military guys.
***4.75 Stars***
Review to come closer to release....BUT I gotta say this was some fabulously delicious friends to lovers angst. Just the right amount and I gobbled it up with gusto! Hands down my favorite in the series!
Each book can easily be read as a standalone, so you don't have to read the previous 2 books to pick up this one...which I TOTALLY RECOMMEND that you do!
DNF @ 68%.
Started great (what earned it 2 stars) and I thought we were heading towards a romance with some real depth but alas, it was not to be. I didn't feel any particularly chemistry between these guys as I'd expect considering it's a best-friends-to-lovers story, the dirty talk sounded forced and unnatural and all-in-all I was just a bit...meh. Shame, as I really liked these characters in the previous books in the series, but it felt like a different author had written this.
Group review with Adam and Cupcake!
4.25 Hearts--Sometimes a book will remind me of a song of three. And this one for me while reading On Point is Smooth Criminal...
That's what Ben is.
Well to me, anyway.
The couple that seemed super obvious finally happens in the friends to lovers romance, On Point. Navy SEALs Maddox and Ben are best friends for life. They do everything together ever since the beginning of their military careers, sharing life experiences along the way. Now nearing thirty, reenlisting is on the horizon and Maddox wants out. He's tired of pining for a man he can't have, tired of watching him hooking up with randoms and just wants to bake. Sniper Maddox is one of the best marksmen in the Navy, but his aims for the one man he loves? No dice.
Ben is anti relationship after his failed quickie marriage has been crashing at Maddox's condo for two years. Coming from a divorced home, he thinks love is a myth. And the closest thing he'll have to that his his friendship with Maddox. And maybe... he might be finally admitting his attraction to the quiet gentle giant. But he's not going to do anything about it because Maddox is all about monogamy and Ben is a one night kinda of guy.
Enter a shared mission where both men get injured and their priorities on life changes. Both men sort of get their heads out of their asses and do something the obvious chemistry they have.
I enjoyed the story. Almost as much as book #2, but not quite. What I loved is getting to learn about Ben and Maddox's backgrounds. See they share similar family angst: Maddox (ultra religious, conservative homophobes) and Ben (divorce, anger toward mother leaving to join a commune). Though I'm not going to lie, Maddox's family made me rage. I know families like that, you probably know families like that. Even reading about it still burns my skin.
Maddox's friends are his true family and realizes it. So when Ben offers to try something different and be together for a trial run, I was a little happy, a little hesitant.
I came to this with a different set of expectations for Maddox and Ben. I started this series on book #2 (my fave of the series so far). Maddox was the quiet one who observed everything and secretly pined. Ben was the man whore who is using his dick as his healing prod - fuck romance, just fuck. And we get a semblance of that and not really. The characters change a little, I was expecting their personalities to be a little different but it works for the story.
The sex is hot: versatile, seductive and bed pounding fun with a friend. Those are always great qualities to have. It might've been my favorite part during the sex scenes, the two were easily able to argue and fuck and then make. They could read each other, know how they were feeling. Good stuff. No telling, a lot of showing.
Do I have any issues with On Point?
My gripe is Ben. He is frustrating, stubborn and one tracked minded. Jesus Christ, he step in just so he can't have no one else? Years of being single together... and the moment he looks like he's over pining for your ass, now he's not as slow on the uptake? There were moments when Ben treated Maddox like a possession rather than a friend. And something about it pissed me off. Because for a while, he just wasn't getting that Maddox is more than his obligatory best friend who has to do everything with him but just can't get a piece of his heart romantically.
And sweet talked to get his way.
Even with that fucking gripe, I still enjoyed this story. Who's the bigger fool, me or Maddox?
I liked the men separately and as a couple. Do I think they'll last? Yeah, if the love wasn't there, there'd be a field full of determination. The story ends with a sweet HEA, I was a little surprised but happy nonetheless.
Recommended for fans of friend to lovers, mild angst and bakers.
Una pena, los dos libros anteriores de la serie me gustaron mucho, este apenas he podido terminarlo. Un friends to lovers entre dos amigos, Maddox y Ben, con cero química, tanto en su amistad, como en su historia de amor. En la primera parte del libro no me convence nada el rollo Rambo perdidos en la selva, nada, y menos todavía con flashbacks desordenados, de distintos momentos, que se terminan a mitad y luego continuan... El recurso del flashback es peligroso, es fácil perder al lector porque cuando entras en el culmen de la historia te parte, para a continuación entrar en el culmen del flashback y partirte otra vez, impides al lector llegar al pico de emoción, no me gusta como lo ha utilizado la autora. Después de su vuelta a USA, toda la relación se sucede de forma mecánica, no hay sorpresas, y eso no es un problema si lo que nos esperamos se desarrolla con un toque de emoción, pero yo no la encontré emoción en ningún lado, nada parece natural.
Cierro el libro con la sensación de que no conozco a los personajes y que su historia de amor me parece muy muy improbable.
Esperaremos a ver qué tal el próximo :)
4.5 Stars!
Let me just say that I'm one very satisfied customer. I admit, the first 2 stories in this series were not my favorites, but it says something when I finish a book that’s over 300 pages in one sitting. That hasn’t happened to me in a long time and it just goes to show that this was a major win.
There is nothing groundbreaking in this friends to lovers story, but for some reason it ticked off all my boxes. Tough military badasses? Check. Off the charts UST? Check. Twisty emotions of doubt, jealousy and insecurity?? CHECK! Throw in one of the MC’s being a sensitive gentle giant and I was all over that like white on rice.
So yes, it’s the age old adage of two guys not wanting to destroy their friendship should they give into their lustful desires. Maddox, ever cool and conservative, only wants Ben one way and that’s the right way - a committed relationship. However, Ben’s been burned by very important people in his life and believes that if he can just hold on tight to being friends with Maddox, he can hang onto him for forever without allowing something like love get in the way and messing things up. When two separate nights of letting go of their inhibitions results in months of awkwardness, it takes a life threatening covert op to bring things into perspective for both Ben and Maddox.
What results is a “try out” period, where each war with their conflicting feelings of wanting to trust but finding it so difficult to let go of the past. Some might be frustrated with what ensues but I was caught in their struggle of trying to find what best suited them and to let go of their baggage and preconceived notions of what love is and isn’t. Yes, it took waaaaaay too long for Ben to dig his head out of his ass, but I still loved both these men. This was emotional and my heart clenched consistently throughout this story, while at the same time I struggled persistently with something stuck in my eyes that just wouldn’t stop making them water.
Obviously, this just simply worked for me - the feels, the dynamic, the hot smex! Unf. Annabeth Albert, you rocked it this go around! Looking forward to the next in series!
This book gave me a case of reviewers block, so I'll keep it short and sweet.
What I loved:
-Best friends to lovers
-Well developed characters and characters growth
-Awesome chemistry between Maddox and Ben
-I won't go into detail, but there were a couple of things I've never seen from Annabeth Albert before, and she nailed them.
-And the end was sweet and fluffy.
This book just further cemented why I love this series and this author! 5 Stars!
WOW!! On Point is another fantabulous book by the awesome Annabeth Albert! I've loved every book I've read yet I feel she just keeps getting better and better! I recommend putting her on your automatic one-click author list. Her stories are full of depth and heart, with characters who come alive on the pages of her books. You won't find cardboard stereotypes which is one of the many things I love about her books.
Ben and Maddox are a dynamite couple. Their sex appeal and chemistry is palpable! I know their HEA will truly last forever because they built their relationship on a solid, 12-year friendship. They've seen each other at their best and their worst, as well as everything in between. It still takes learning to really communicate to achieve their HEA. Very realistic.
I can't urge you enough to read On Point. I laughed, cried, got angry, wanted to slap some sense into both of them. I was fully invested in the story and read it in one setting. If you haven't read Annabeth Albert, what are you waiting for?
Meh... This one fell sort of flat for me. Maddox and Ben were okay characters, but they never got me on the edge of my seat like Apollo and Dylan did.
And UGH that 'mother'-character... WHYYYYYY? I get that she was the reason for some of Ben's issues, but she pissed me off, and the whole (again) 'flat' text she sent him... *sigh*
I don't know if I'm really excited about Dustin's book, but maybe that'll change later on.
Ben and Maddox have been friends and SEAL teammates for a long time now. But lately, things have changed between them and their relationship is taking a toll. After a difficult mission where they were both gravely injured, they had to remain at home to heal and work out their attraction.
SEALs, friends to lover, setting in San Diego, two strong and hot men : I was rubbing my hands, anticipating a great read and the start did deliver : flashbacks revealing the change of dynamics between Ben and Maddox, the test of the bond uniting them during that dreadful mission…
I was in bliss and then,…then, I lost track of the chemistry and sexual tension between the MCs. The development of the relationship between Ben and Maddox felt flat and clinical for me.
I did finish the book because it was still entertaining, but not much more for me. Maybe I was not in the right mood, maybe…
Maddox and Ben's friends-to-lovers romance was sweet and sexy, with a splash of action and a dash of delicious hurt-comfort moments, and a HEA that had my dopey grin firmly in place long after the final page was turned.
I enjoyed watching these two navigate their changing relationship, using lots of "science experiments" to test the waters. Although there was nothing particularly new about this friends-to-lovers plot, I enjoyed it all the same, probably because Albert is such a great writer and her characters and their stories are always effortlessly entertaining, while balancing the perfect blend of heart and heat.
My one complaint revolves around the predictable break-up/make-up scenes towards the end of the story. Never a fan of this kind of romance genre plot device - it's why I stopped reading so many M/F authors - I felt these moments did a disservice to the overall story and definitely marred my feelings towards Ben's character. . Sadly, he never quite redeemed himself in my eyes, but my utter adoration for all things Maddox assured that their reconciliation and eventual HEA was pleasing overall.
As I said above, this was my favourite book of the series and would have been a 5 star read for me had the silliness at the end not occurred.
On Point is my favorite in the series so far because TWO Navy SEALS. Yes, I'm shallow like that. ;-)
Seriously, how can anyone resist a romance with two big, tough, 30 y.o. MEN. Not me. I'm not that strong.
This friends to lovers story had enough UST and heat on a big king size bed to make a fire extinguisher a necessity.
Plus we got an action and suspense SEAL heart stopping scene. My inner 12 y.o. boy liked that part best.
I really liked this book. Especially compared with the last one which wasn't my favorite.
As usual, I'm taking a star off for excessive typos.
I'm also going to make one complaint. I always seem to like one MC better than the other in Albert's books. I always have to remind myself, in spite of their physical description, that I'm not reading F/M romance. It's in their thoughts, actions and reactions that I have a problem differentiating between her M/M romance and a typical F/M romance set of characters. I don't typically have this problem with other M/M romance books and I wish I didn't with these.
In spite of that, I do still enjoy this series.
3.5 stars and looking forward to the next one.
one of my favs in this series
I really enjoyed this friends to lovers romance. Maddox and Ben have a lot of history and we get to see it so it makes everything more impactful, building a connection to them and their relationship. They don't fall into a romance too fast or easily. Their situation and feelings that are keeping them from going to that next step felt real and was well developed, not a plot device used to add artificial angst. I was rooting for Maddox and Ben the whole time.
On Point starts out intense with our main character's, Maddox and Ben on deployment on a dangerous mission that has started to go sideways. Separated from the rest of their team and injured, they have to hunker down in this forest environment and avoid detection from hostiles. We get flashback scenes interspersed while they are waiting and traveling to a rendezvous spot for rescue. We get to see how they first met and became friends, and what caused their friendship to become strained. Things are put in perspective and back home the things keeping them apart don't seem so important.
The beat goes on and I feel fine. 😊😊😊
In this outing Ben & Maddox, who we met in At Attention, are trying to navigate a lifelong friendship that has shifted into something else. Maddox has been quietly in love with Ben since BUD/S, while Ben has only recently woken up to the attraction, but once he does he's all in. He approaches dating Maddox like a mission and his inner monologues are both funny and heartbreaking.
Ben and Maddox are different people, who fit perfectly smooth each other's rough edges and make a soft landing for one another. Mad loves to sing and bake while Ben thrives on the structure & adrenaline of being a SEAL, together they make one perfect team.
What I love most of this series, so far, is how Annabeth Albert incorporates all types of families and people from all walks of life in a seamless and organic way. My other favorite thing has been the choice of narrators, in this case J.F. Harding. His narrative pace is perfect for this story of two people really getting to know each other, almost like a chamber piece, but he also gets sexy times 🔥🔥🔥.
On Point is the third book in the Out of Uniform series by Annabeth Albert, and while you'll definitely want to read the entire series, I think this book could easily be read as a stand-alone.
Ben and Maddox have been friends since they met during Hell Week of SEAL training, and over a decade later, their friendship remains solid and reliable. The story starts with a mission that goes wrong, leaving Ben and Maddox stranded and gravely injured in the jungles of Indonesia and struggling to reach the Plan B pick-up zone. I read the first third of On Point in one fell swoop, not really breathing until they were finally rescued. This plot is the most gripping and engaging of the series in my opinion.
And then Albert gives us a truly wonderful second act as Ben and Maddox move from friends to lusting after one another with heaps and heaps of steamy UST, and eventually to lovers in a way that just feels right.
... some things just defied explanation. Like how he and Ben fit so well together. Like how Ben kissed him like they’d been doing it for years and also like it was Maddox’s first kiss ever. And good lord, the man could teach a graduate-level chemistry class in how to ignite a spark ...
We get both POVs and I love how these complex and flawed men battle their issues. Maddox has to decide if he remains a SEAL or if he dares starting a new career. Ben goes from the "High Prince of Group Escapades and Kink" to really struggling with trust and commitment and although there was a point in the book when I wanted to repeatedly hit him with a big "get a clue" stick, the resolution is sweet and worth the wait.
“And I know it’s hard to trust. I’m struggling with that too. But maybe it’s a leap of faith we have to make together. Like a jump. We’ve got to trust that the landing’s not going to kill us.”
This is my favorite book of the Out of Uniform series. FYI, there are a few brief scenes with Pike and Zeke as well as Apollo and Dylan, and there is another book coming out in November about Dylan's brother, Dustin. I highly recommend On Point and give it 5 stars!
But what makes me happy is you. What makes me strong is you. You in my life, in whatever capacity I can get. Much as it terrifies me, I want that life together.
I absolutely love the Out of Uniform series.
After Apollo, we now get another brooding hero in Ben, the promiscuous party boy, who tries to get over his wrecked marriage by working through an endless string of hook-ups.
His room mate Maddox watches Ben's ways with quiet resignation. Being best friends since BUD/S training, Maddox and Ben have become room mates after Ben's divorce and watching his friend bring strangers into their home for sex is a particularly unpleasant experience for the quiet, romantic Maddox.
However, getting lured into a hot threesome with Ben and a stranger ignites a spark in Maddox that he is unable to overcome, taking measures to end his infatuation with the Hollywood star handsome Navy SEAL once and for all.
However, Ben isn't prepared to let his best friend Maddox go - and proposes to save their friendship by offering him the only thing he knows Maddox would be interested in to stay: A romantic relationship.
But how can Maddox ever hope to win Ben for a loyal relationship when all Ben ever did was run from the things he didn't understand?
I really loved Maddox, but for me, Ben clearly carried the story.
I love a handsome, butch guy who doesn't understand his own feelings, running from one dead end to the next in his race to make things right, but never managing to reach his goal (I still have fond memories of Apollo).
description
I wanted to punch Ben so many times here... But when he finally worked his way through his issues, he gave us (and especially Maddox) a beautiful HEA.
I really loved this.
5 stars!
And I can't wait for the next book!!! OMG, this series is awesome!!
