Hmmm, I think the longer works are more the author's strength. This one fell short of the standard and expectations her Mercy Hills Pack series has set for me.
This world is completely different, in that these aren't shifters. These are human alphas and omegas. But the main issue I had regarding this was that this was just a status symbol, kind of like rich and poor. There was no backstory as to why they have been categorised as such or anything like that. So it was hard to actually connect properly with the story, as there are only the characters to connect to, no world-building to grab my attention.
Now come the MCs, themselves. I really couldn't feel any sort of connection with either Elias or Matthew, or Eli or Matt, rather. It was rather a typical Harlequin Presents story, really, without the tempestuous journey that is signature of those stories. It was a very mellow read, not asking for much of an emotional investment from me. There was not much action to see in terms of the abuse Eli was suffering, nor was there any proof as to Matt being the richest bachelor. Shouldn't he be constantly accosted by women all around?
All in all, I am left feeling just meh.

Surprisingly, I really loved this book. 😁 I’m not a big fan of second chance romances or kids from previous relationships in a story. I know the kid from this story is conceived by the two main MCs but still since the sire had no idea the child was his, I didn’t think I was going to like this book that much. I bought this audio solely because it was narrated by John Solo and I was in the mood for some fluffy mpreg. But turned out, this book equally surprised me and captivated me. 😉
Eli is a single parent omega who’s struggling to keep his son and himself afloat. It’s quite unheard of an omega to work rather than being a house husband and to make the matters worse, he has a son without naming any sire. Talk about being scandalous in the tiny town of Oceanport. The only reason he’s not ending up on streets is because of the help of his younger brother Griffin who’s an omega himself. Of course Eli knew who the sire is but when the sire of his child is the richest man in the town and also a married man, it’s best for everyone to keep his mouth shut. He’s happy being adorable Jake’s dad and he has no problem taking care of his child. Well, it might not be bad to get some help since Jake is being quite rebellious and troublesome at school these days. And suddenly, the man he thought he’d never face again reentered his life.
Matthew just got out of an unhappy marriage of 8 years and returning to his hometown of tiny Oceanport to check up on his father’s health. He has everything, money, power and looks. Except, what lacks in his life is happiness. He was married for 8 years but what he wanted was a mate and not a spouse. And he could never forget the very first omega he fell in love with just before he got married all those years ago. It was supposed to be an arrangement that was fun and escape from the reality of his hectic life. Instead, he fell in love and he never quite got over that adorable omega, Eli. Now, he’s back in Oceanport and leaving back to Chicago where his hotel located in a few days. And then he literally bumped into Eli again in the very park they met for the very first time all those years ago. 😉
Intrigued by the adorable child who was walking with Eli at the time, Matt tried to figure out which lucky bastard tied the knots with Eli. But turns out, he’s unmated for all these years. Meanwhile, the child is 7 years old while he last slept with Eli 8 years ago. Could it be possible that he’s indeed the sire of Jake? But he’s determined to win Eli back whether the child is his or not. He’s done pretending and living up to the expectations of his cold and distant parents. It’s time he begs for the forgiveness of the omega who showed him what the real happiness was all those years ago.
This is not a very angsty read and the plot is quite simple. Second chances, forgiving and accepting and realizing what you really want in life. But John Solo was able to portray the vivid emotions of our MCs and made it very interesting to listen. 😍 I was totally hooked. I know that they are going to reconcile sooner or later and going to have a happily ever after. However, it was quite interesting to see Ann-Katrin Byrde cleverly making a simple plot interesting and enjoyable. A protective, sexy Alpha, cute and caring omega and lovely Jake. Plus, a cutie senior Labrador who reunited these two lovers for the second time. The whole story was cute, heartwarming and enjoyable. ❤️ And the smut also was hot. I can’t wait to find out more stories about Omegas and Alphas in the tiny town of Oceanport. And we all know, I’ve been addicted to soothing tone of John Solo for a while now. Now, it’s time to grab my headphones and listen to the second story in the series. 😉

Great read!
You know what I love about this author's books? She never uses the tropes normally found in books of the like. In this story, the main characters act their age. They take responsibility for their actions. They own up to their mistakes. They were truthful with each other as well as with everyone else. They communicated.
In short, they act like grown ups.

This was surprisingly successful. I'm a huge fan of anything omegaverse, so I would have preferred a bit more world building, but otherwise this was a a solid read. It helped hugely that the picture of Eli as a single dad felt pretty honest about the downsides, including his financial vulnerability, the fact that he'd had to quit school, that his pregnancy derailed not only his but his brother's life, and that he has regrets despite truly loving his kid. Eli actually seemed like a pretty terrific dad as these things go, in part because he was patient and consistently tried to imagine what his kid was feeling, while also acknowledging that Jake could be obnoxious or just exhausting. As M/M romance kids go, Jake was a model of Flaubertian realism, which is remarkable given that he's an Alpha in a version of the omegaverse. But he did not say anything I couldn't imagine a seven year old saying, was not overly wise or adorable or noticeably superior to other children.
The book doesn't do a huge amount with the usual "Alpha/omega dynamic" which I missed and Matt's situation would probably have benefited from some more world building, especially about how Alphas perceive omegas. However the basic story of how he discovered he had a kid felt pretty realistic. It helps that even his wrong choices made sense in the context, avoiding the usual absurd rom-com dramas and misunderstandings. A million extra points to the author for not vilifying the ex-wife, which usually feels like a cheap shot to me. Marriages fail between completely decent people all the time: it's nice that Matt can own his mistakes without turning his ex into an evil stalker witch, who tries to wreck Eli's life or something else contrived.
Bottom Line: I usually have to go to fanfic to satisfy my craving for m-preg and omegaverse since most published works in this genre suck IMHO. The good news is that I'm having very good luck with Ms. Byrde's books. Warmly recommend for fans of the genre.

Wow, I just did not enjoy this at all.
Dual POV, light angst, mpreg with some light miscommunication, on page (but not detailed) birth, and a HEA.
This should have been an entertaining read for me, but the writing didn't appeal to me at all, I was bored with the story, I didn't really like the characters, and largely found myself skimming, so I am really glad I got this on Kindle Unlimited.

I don’t know how I feel about this one. On one hand I liked it. But the alpha seemed kind of week and not very assertive. I might pause this series.

This book has left me with a bit of a dilemma. I honestly didn't mind it, and the low star-rating has more to do with the fact that I felt there were chunks missing in the world this story was set in. If you are creating a world of Alphas & Omegas that has nothing to do with shifters of any kind, at least give us some world-building as to what the differences are, what exactly it means to be either, are there males that are neither and, oh yes, what about the females? Personally I find all of this rather crucial, particularly as the authors allude towards certain characteristics in both the alphas and the omegas. To just know that omegas can fall pregnant and are basically seen in society as "home-wreckers", "sluts" and monikers like that is really not sufficient to base a story (or a series) on.
It's really unfortunate, as the story was otherwise quite interesting and well-written. The characters were intriguing and multi-layered. I just had the feeling at times that if you changed Eli's gender to a female you would have a better story :(

Meh, I read 'Jake and Conner' which is the second chance/love story of the mc's child and I enjoyed it. But, this one doesn't compare. The only character that stood out, to me, is Jake who is a secondary character and the child in the story.
So many things I didn't enjoy. The writing, the characters, the ''angst'' and I use that word lightly.
The issue for me was the Alpha, Matthew Lowell. Oh my god, he had no backbone, no direction, lukewarm reactions, wishy-washy, no self-awareness or self preservation in his bone.
He's allowed his family to dictate his life, present, past and future. Any positive move he makes was due to hand holding or a push from another external character. Things needed to be laid out, explained and someone needed to point him in the right direction for him to make changes. Even then it was just another form of being guided and influenced by others. Not a fan.
Elias Stevens wasn't any better. A summer fling with a rich Alpha leaving him pregnant, causing him to drop out of college and survive in poverty. The brunt of jokes in his small coastal town. And the second Matthew comes back into the picture he just rolls over and accepts anything and everything.
"After all the gossip I’d had to endure, who’d have thought that someone was ever going to make an honest omega out of me?"
"Well, at least I didn’t have to worry about him leaving me when my body changed."
I just can't with comments like that.

This was such a nice story and a pleasure to read. I was a bit surprised that the omegas and alphas didn't shift into other creatures but I soon got with the swing of things and relaxed into the story.
It can be quite hard to find a 'shifter' story that is different. Normally they are so full of tropes that once you have read one you have read them all, but this book has a distinctive feel to it and it doesn't follow the usual tropes.
In this story there is no 'big misunderstanding' which is an overused plot device. Of course there are arguments and difficulties along the way but they are dealt with in a realistic way and they feel authentic. I also loved the way that the child Jake was involved and the fact that he really felt like a seven year old and acted like one as well. I loved that the omega was actually quite tough although vulnerable at time he still managed to fight his corner and didn't let people roughshod over him. I also thought Matt the alpha was a great character too. He wasn't deceived by any one or pressurised to do the wrong thing. He knew what he had to do and he weathered his way through it.
All of this made the story both enjoyable and credible and the writing really engages the reader. Even the sex scenes were not the usual boring stuff but actually felt like part of the story instead of being and add on.
This is the first time I have read anything by this author and although the story is a simple one it is a very enjoyable one. I am definitely going to read her back list.

I’m a big fan of this author, so I was excited to see that she was starting a new series - this time there are no shifters, no dragons, but I'm still gonna get my mpreg fix!
In Oceanport, there are alphas and omegas, but they are completely human. Eli met Matt when they were both very young and had a hot, but short, time together before Matt was forced into an arranged marriage by his family. Unfortunately, it left Eli with a surprise - their son, Jake. They run into each other years later and Eli has to figure out how much to let Matt back into his life and what to tell his son.
I wanted to smack Matt’s family, his sister and mother, they were just horrible. But I’m so glad that Matt stuck to his decisions and was determined to make Eli his and not hide it. I loved Eli, how he wanted to be more than the stereotypical omega, he still wanted to finish college, and wanted to be the best for his son. He and Matt had great chemistry together, and I loved them reconnecting!
This was a very sweet story, and I really loved reading about Eli and Matt reconnecting. There’s a cute kid, a sweet dog, and a HEA! Just fun to read and I look forward to future stories in this series. I really hope that Eli’s brother gets a story next!

I love second chance story. With good groveling, if one of my MC's fucked up in the past. But there's no groveling. He just let him in. And I hate the alpha. He comes off as weak in my eyes. Too bad it didn't work with me. :(

This is a weird trope to say the least, but still a good story.
In this world, there are humans (men and women), alphas (only male?) and omegas (only male?). Alpha's and Omega's aren't secret, but they don't seem to be shifters either. Not sure what they are???. The alpha's can get the omega's pregnant. (please don't give me details on the birth!, lol).
But anyways, it's fantasy land and the story itself is an older trope... teenage love gone wrong because of family obligations, and a secret pregnancy for the MC that the rich family wouldn't approve of.
Eight years later, Jake is now 7 and Matt (the rich heir who married another) is back in town, recently divorced. Eli has had it rough being a single dad, kicked out by his family when he got knocked up. Jake, is well written as a kid. The slang is outta date, but his temperament is pretty believable.
The story is very low angst despite the secret baby trope. It's almost as much a 'slice of life' story as a secret baby/ second chance romance. The MCs still have that old spark, but they also need to get to know each other all over again. The town people were pretty awful. A lot of prejudice against omegas... especially unmated ones.
An enjoyable read with a rather long drawn out super sweet ending. But it was also an unexpected ending which I really appreciated.
John Solo reads the audiobook and does a great job with the voices.

In this world, there are humans (men and women), alphas (only male?) and omegas (only male?). Alpha's and Omega's aren't secret, but they don't seem to be shifters either. Not sure what they are???. The alpha's can get the omega's pregnant. (please don't give me details on the birth!, lol).
But anyways, it's fantasy land and the story itself is an older trope... teenage love gone wrong because of family obligations, and a secret pregnancy for the MC that the rich family wouldn't approve of.
Eight years later, Jake is now 7 and Matt (the rich heir who married another) is back in town, recently divorced. Eli has had it rough being a single dad, kicked out by his family when he got knocked up. Jake, is well written as a kid. The slang is outta date, but his temperament is pretty believable.
The story is very low angst despite the secret baby trope. It's almost as much a 'slice of life' story as a secret baby/ second chance romance. 8 years ago Matt and Eli had a secret summer fling. Matt wanted something for himself before he married the woman his parents picked out. No one expected a baby to happen. By the time Eli found out he was expecting, Matt was already married and he didn't want to be a typical Omega home wrecker. Also, he was afraid Matts much richer family would try to take him away. Aside from his brother, he told no one the fathers name.
Fast forward 8 years, Matt is divorced and back in town due to his father's failing health and literally runs into Eli and their son at the park. They realize the feelings of that summer had never went away and start getting to know each other again. And eventually get back together.
I like that even though Matt figured out Jake was his son, he waits until Eli is ready to tell him. I also like that they wait to tell Jake who he is.
Another thing I really like is that Matt doesn't let his family manipulate him into marrying someone else (which they want) or give up Eli and their family (which they try).
My only problem is that this is an A/O mpreg not set in a shifter world. Mpreg is more believable to me when set in a paranormal world.
That said, I enjoy this author and will most likely read the next book, who I assume will be about the brother, Griffin, and and his mysterious baker friend.

Omega Elias Stevens and Alpha Matthew Lowell first met one another during the wrong time in both of their lives. Matthew was to shortly to enter into a family arranged marriage meant to further enrich is well off, high society family's status and Elias wanted to fulfill his dream of attending college to become a Veterinarian thanks to an educational scholarship that few Omegas ever have the opportunity to earn. Despite conflicting plans, Matt and Eli entered into a relationship with the understanding that it would have a specific end date. A pregnancy was not supposed to be part of that understanding. Eight years later Matthew returns to his hometown a divorced man and with Eli on his mind, he goes for a walk in the park where he first met Eli and has an unexpected reunion.
This isn't a shifter world, but people are categorized in Alpha and Omega classifications with Omega single parents being treated as fourth class citizens often earning less, enduring poor treatment from others higher on the hierarchy and publicly chastised for their stereotypical "slutty" ways. Some of the treatment Eli and son Jake endure due to Eli being an Omega single parent and the elitist attitude of Matthew's family made me want to stick up for Eli. More proof that I enjoyed the story.
I enjoyed the story and would consider it a fluffy and light read. It started strong, was low angst and despite the long separation, a secret child, a family crisis, a secretive brother and a mature yet playful dog, concluded with a very HEA.
We also get a couple hints that Griff's story will be book two in this series and I'm eagerly awaiting it's release.

When you remove the Sci-Fi/Fantasy part of MPreg, you end up with books that read like heterosexual books that were converted to be gay. That's exactly what this is. It's the same crappy secret baby books that've been plaguing the straight romance genre for ages, complete with sexist stereotypes and all. Only difference is the girl in this one has a dick.

I really like Elias and Matt. Both were in a tough spot. They had some chemistry. They were great together. I liked the storyline as well. I just felt like it was missing a deeper connection to the characters.

Awww, very sweet second chance romance. I've read some super intense stories lately, and it's like a warm, comforting hug to listen to John Solo perform The Omega's Secret Baby. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

3.5* I think this is the first book Alpha/omega I read without they being shifters. I really enjoyed this !! The book is so well narrated that you really inmerse yourself in this universe and I don't found anything weird.
I was a bit scary because I don't usually like the "reunions X years after" But this one is SUPER cute!!!! I´m totally going to read the second one!

Super sweet non shifter omegaverse romance
There's nothing particularly new or different in this non shifter omegaverse story but it is a lovely second chance romance where two lovers come back together to fight against convention and be together.
I liked Elias and Matt, and Jake was a well written kid, not some super precocious child who knows everything. He had tantrums and wasn't amazing at dealing with feelings, just a normal seven year-old.
There's low angst and the steam level is moderate too which works switching the setting.

Second chance.
The book started having a good premise but the author destroyed it. It seems that this book was one-sided in that the author, portrayed the MCs as having no backbone or a chance to chastise certain characters in this book. Case in point, Mrs. Foster, Matt's mother whatever the bitch's name is, and of course, the bitch that was his sister, Karen. I thought it was going to be a good book to read, boy was I ever wrong! I'm wondering if the next book will be like the first one.

When I think of alpha and omega my mind automatically turns to shifters, almost primarily wolf shifters, as that's the terminology that is predominantly used. However, author Ann-Katrin Byrde has introduced something new to the mpreg alpha and omega trope, and I was very excited to get immersed in this world. As I've come to expect from this author, deciphering her world building always takes time, as she isn't one to just lay it all out there. It's part of the reason I so love her writing, but it's also why the only thing I knew about this book before I started is that there are alpha and omega distinctions, but they're nonshifters.
What I quickly discovered is that unmated omegas, especially ones with children, are treated as less than second class citizens. No, that title belongs to the women in this world, but omegas fall even further down the scale, with most people of the opinion that omegas are useless without a strong alpha to "tend" to them, and all they want (and are good for) is sex. Matt certainly doesn't feel that way even though his wealthy, snobbish parents tried to drill that through his head. Elias, being an unmated father, deals with a lot of gossip, and a lot of stones cast in his direction. His son, Jake, is seven now, an alpha, and the gossip has infiltrated the schoolyard, much to Elias's horror.
“You know, I’d been told all my life that one day, I was going to tear a family apart because that’s what omegas do. We can’t keep our legs closed and we breed like bunnies with no regards for the sanctity of marriage.”
When Matt and Elias run into each other after all these years, it doesn't take long for Matt to make the connection and discover Jake is his son. Elias is scared that he'll leave and Jake's heart will be broken (not to mention his) so Elias insists they keep everything quiet. A good thing, as it turns out, since Matt's mother, a horrid, vicious, class-conscious viper, is determined to see Matt married to another appropriate woman so he can start having heirs. Matt's father is in full agreement as he thinks being an alpha is all about working to make more money and increasing the family’s prestige, and that a wife's job is as a uterus. Nice, huh? Very misogynistic.
When an emergency happens in Matt's family, his sister, a replica of his mother, and his mother make it crystal clear what Matt's responsibilities are now. Stuck between a rock and a hard place Matt is conflicted, wondering if he's ever been a strong enough alpha. It was hard to watch him and Elias go through this time. There were a few occasions I wanted to smack Matt and tell him he needed to lay down the law with his family.
I still have questions about this world, which I know the author will slowly reveal over time, but they certainly didn't prevent me from enjoying every moment of this book. I adored Elias and Jake, and Matt grew on me. He certainly vindicated himself in the end and that was all I cared about. I am definitely looking forward to the next installment and I hope it's as sweet and exciting as this was.
