Tyndale NLT The Swindoll Study Bible (Hardcover) – New Living Translation Study Bible by Charles Swindoll, Includes Study Notes, Book Introductions, Application Articles, Holy Land Tour and More!
The Swindoll Study Bible offers the best of Chuck Swindoll's wit, charm, pastoral insight, and wise biblical study directly to you as you study God's Word. Chuck's warm, personal style comes across on every page, and his informed, practical insights get straight to the heart of the Bible's message for the world today. Reading each part of this study Bible is like hearing Chuck speak God's Word directly to your heart. It will both encourage readers' faith and draw them deeper into the study of God's Word.
In Chuck's own words: "This study Bible was designed with you in mind. As you read the Scriptures, imagine me sitting beside you and sharing personal stories, important insights, and hard-earned lessons that will encourage you to walk more closely with Jesus Christ. You'll discover the who, what, where, when, why, and how of the Bible. Who wrote it and when? What does it mean, and where did its events occur? Why should I trust it? And most importantly, how can I apply it today?
"It's that last question more than any other that has fed my passion to publish this Bible. My primary focus in ministry has been teaching biblical insight for living--for genuine life change. After all, that's why God communicated His Word to us--that we may become like His Son, Jesus Christ, the central figure of this Book."Free App with Purchase! Charles Swindoll has devoted over four decades to two passions: an unwavering commitment to the practical communication and application of God's Word, and an untiring devotion to seeing lives transformed by God's grace. Chuck graduated magna cum laude from Dallas Theological Seminary and has since been honored with four doctorates. For his teaching on Insight for Living, he has received the Program of the Year award and the Hall of Fame award from the National Religious Broadcasters as well as multiple book awards.
Chuck Swindolls many years of experience and teaching brought to us on the pages as well. Each book starts off with an explanation of who, what where, when and why. The bonus here was "How do I apply this?". I was already learning and I was only on page one. The "living insights" helped me relate to what I was reading and the story is explained in a very helpful manner. There are charts and maps to further your understanding of what the Holy Word is saying. The "application articles" are so wonderful as we get to read Chuck Swindolls deep perspective on the book you are studying. The prayer moments are a special treat as I felt the Chuck was right there, praying with me as I walked the journey. I have had other study bibles, but nothing compares this one. I feel I am not only reading, I am understanding at a new level. This would be a perfect Bible for a new Christian as much as it is for the more advanced student of the Word. I highly recommend this for any and all of us journeying together in our faith. I was so graciously gifted this Bible by Tyndale house for a honest review.
I'm so grateful for Dr. Swindoll's life. Anything he writes is worth reading, learning, and growing in our faith and knowledge of Him. Charles Swindoll's trademark humor, integrity, and authenticity have made him one of this century’s most beloved and trusted preachers, writers, and teachers.
How do you review a Bible? Okay, I'll make an attempt...
First of all, the NLT is written in today's language. It's simple and clear - and just an overall good translation. Of course, with any Bible, it's good to compare among a variety of translations for clarification of difficult verses. But the NLT is a good translation, and I enjoy reading it.
Secondly, Chuck Swindoll is a wise Bible teacher. As a committed Christian who acknowledges God's Word as inerrant and powerful, I will never find a human being with whom I agree at every point - but Swindoll is a solid teacher. I have enjoyed learning from him as I read through his study Bible.
I am extremely grateful for resources like this one and am sure I will return to its notes for inspiration and further learning in the future.
Swindoll adds many features to his study Bible that I enjoyed: 1) spotlights on various Bible characters 2) featured insights/archeological discoveries of different cities/topographical regions of the Bible 3) comments throughout the Bible left me with a deeper understanding of the Word and how to apply it daily in my walk. Lastly, there were one page devotionals that expounded on specific passages that opened up the treasures of the passage in a new and profound way, like a pearl hidden within the Scripture. As the New Living translation, this Bible is a great resource for someone new to the faith, but yet offers enough depth for the seasoned saint.
I spent the last year reading through Chuck Swindoll's study bible notes, so you won't have to. I'm assuming that all the people who have rated it 5 star haven't actually read all the way through it. Don't get me wrong, I like Chuck Swindoll and was actually really looking forward to reading through this Study Bible, but I was ultimately disappointed. Perhaps because anyone and everyone seems to feel the need to put out a Study Bible these days.
The good: 1. As you might expect if you've read anything by Mr. Swindoll, the Study Bible is an easy read (which is more than I can say for many Study Bibles—I'm kind of a Study Bible nerd). He writes in his familiar, folksy way, which I really like and thoroughly enjoy.
2. It's a bit of a different Study Bible in that it should probably be entitled "Chuck Swindoll's Application Study Bible" because it is mainly about application, not really about information, or even mostly interpreting the text other than in the light of applying it to current readers.
3. He includes prayers in his Study Bible from time to time, which is a unique feature and one I really liked.
The bad:
1. Growing up I heard a lot of Chuck Swindoll sermons and I thought, "wow, is he really great on application." Having lived...ahem...a lot of years, and reading through this Study Bible, I realized more and more that his application, and I hate to say this because I really love the guy, is often really, really bad. Here is one example. In his discussion of Rev 7.9-17, he writes:
"WHEN WE pass into the Lord’s presence, the Lamb will be the focus of our attention. Every time we see His scars, we will fall at His feet and worship." Alright! You go Chuck, great point. I love it. But...then the wheels fall off. He continues: "As I think about this interlude in the book of Revelation, I want to encourage us all to build interludes into our lives. Interludes reaffirm for us who is first."
Wait. What?!? All of the sudden we are applying this to make sure we add interludes into our lives? Now, I assume John had a lot of motives and messages and applications in mind when he penned Rev. 7.9-17, and I'm also quite sure he did not mean this as a passage to teach us that we should have peaceful interludes in our lives. I'm not saying this isn't good advice from Chuck, because it is, what I'm saying is that it is at this point that Chuck is leading us astray in how to apply Scripture.
As I read through this Study Bible, I found out that he does this...a lot, and it isn't good.
Another good example is his application of David and Goliath in 1 Sam 17. He has a long application about facing the giants in our lives. This is NOT the application the author of the book of Samuel has in mind for us, but this is the application modern interpreters find again and again, thereby teaching us to imagine ourselves as David and our problems as Goliath. Ugh. We are not David and while our problems are often very difficult, they are not Goliaths. I won't belabor the point more, but if you read through this Study Bible and at each application ask yourself, "Is this the way the author would like us to apply this text," your answer will often be a firm: No.
Since this Study Bible is mostly an application Bible, this in my view is a fatal flaw.
Chuck Swindoll gives us a lot of good, practical advice in this book, and if you just read it as good, practical advice, it's actually pretty good reading. If you use it as a template on how to apply the text, Chuck will often lead you astray from how to apply the text and still be faithful to the author's intent.
The wonderful way the text was arranged so you could have the references & explanations at your fingertips. I got discouraged at times when I would lose my place & it took me forever to find where I had been. I read through the Bible every year and find new insights every year.
I love this Bible. Best ever for me - and believe me, I have a lot of them. I always come away with insights and deeper thoughts to ponder about the truths and promises of God. This Bible makes me thirst to continue reading.
Again, Swindoll is a great Theologian, Bible Teacher, Pastor and Author. He is from DTS. Anyone from DTS is worth their salt. In line with all of that, this Study Bible is a must have.
I began listening to Chuck Swindoll in the 1980's when I lived briefly in Dallas. His "Insight For Living" radio broadcast was my favorite program. Then we were overjoyed when he started a church in Frisco, Texas to shepherd. I have read most if his books and he is uniquely talented with humor, honestly and the ability to make me self reflect.
